I’m basically thinking that, much like how The Untamed and its source material are split between two different time periods, there’d be two sets of protags-from-my-end involved: Kei, and the generation before hers.

This is only for Kei’s parents’ generation:

THE CREW: 

Gekkō Wataru left the Gekkō family as a kid, establishing himself as an independent merchant over the course of his teens and early twenties. 

Wataru learns the basics of making paper talismans from an associate he meets while building credit in Nagasaki. He mostly finds them useful for practicing his calligraphy, until his first attempt goes off like a firecracker. Then there’s no going back.

He picks up conversational Cantonese and Mandarin from traders and merchants—enough to confuse the hell out of himself and functionally communicate during business deals. He does not have time to pursue academic Mandarin or the more obscure hanzi characters (aside from the ones that made it to kanji) until his twenties, when he is rich enough to hire tutors.

Wataru uses Kansai’s regional accent, which both of his companions lack.

By the standards of onmyōji and Chinese cultivators, Wataru is a barely-functional latecomer to the use of qi. He makes up for it with mundane business sense, a joking personality, and a keen ear for rumors.

Uesugi Tomoe still leaves her nephew and once-almost-husband with her sister’s family while she goes to sort out the rival clan problem on her own. 

The campaign of terror once again lasts six months in Japan, because she is nothing if not terribly efficient. With a handful of targets left who flee to China, she returns to her sister’s family for a last visit before she flees the country. She ends up taking Shinta with her, and the pair travel across the countryside to Nagasaki.

Miyako is all jagged edges. She has the time to sand some of them down before meeting Wataru, but is still definitely the most violent of this trio even after tempering. As a result of her education, she knows the most kanji and history, but her lack of sociability means she learns the Chinese dialects her boys do much more slowly.

Miyako has a Tohoku accent, which her companions lack.

A world-class warrior in single and one-versus-many combat, but has very little aptitude or knowledge of fighting supernatural opponents. Her sword is probably cursed. Her sword, Yukishiro, serves as the foundation of her name change to Yukishiro Miyako, and acquires sixty-seven additional kills. For the sake of not being arrested, she’s rarely seen carrying it in public. 

Uzumaki Shinta survives the night the Uesugi clan holdings burn, because of some lucky missed shots. 

While left behind with Yūki, he was unable to settle into any role in the Kato household. He gets along fine, but cannot escape the fact that his (adopted) family killed the bulk of the Uesugi branch he actually met. When Miyako arrives to say goodbye to her remaining family before she leaves for China, he leaves with her.

Shinta develops control over his qi/ki over time, as he comes into his own. Turns out that being more social than Miyako also means he picks up languages faster, Chinese included, and builds confidence.

He’s the only one who speaks Edo-accented Japanese without having to think it over, and can generally mimic the accents of the other two people in his inner circle.

On the whole, Shinta is the one most likely to get the group involved in side-quests out of the goodness of his heart. He is, after all, the one who went against the will of his family for the sake of what was right, even when the choice he made nearly killed him on the spot.

I still haven’t come up with like, culturally-relevant courtesy names for any of them, because you know theirs are tongue-twisters for locals. I still need to do a lot of research in order to figure any of that out, and more thinking/watching to come up with how they’d be involved in the cultivation world’s rat’s nest of politics. As foreigners (from Dongying/Nippon of all places), they’re more likely to be swept along by the tide than directly involved, but...

Well, shit happens.

I also have a few thoughts on what techniques would be available to these three, and what they wouldn’t be able to do by xianxia novel standards. Like fly on swords. Like, that’s just something that doesn’t seem to happen outside of that genre.

It strikes me just now that these three have a dynamic like Team Eight, but with the personalities shuffled around.

For Kei’s particular setup, well, even drawing her in hanfu was a whim, but I’m willing to listen to others’ thoughts on it. I had vague thoughts about a sect like the Jiang actually making the flight technique available for gen 2 adventures, but noble cultivator sects tend to be extremely selective about disciples and I’d have to read up more about their recruiting standards. They’re basically Chinese noble families with sword wizard powers.

The Jins don’t have standards, they have money.
