I’m putting this in a reblog because it doesn’t really fit the original post anymore, but before I went off somewhere entirely different I actually wanted to use this topic to be incredibly annoying about one of my favourite topics, which is Strike Tanaka’s old boys’ love doujinshi. Spoiler warning for those, in case you ever want to read them, and another warning because I love them and tend to ramble, and another for the potato quality of my scans. I don’t know why they’re like that. 

These two are called Shino and Jin, and they’re the protagonists of the doujin Mahoutsukai no Restaurant, published by Strike Tanaka in 2011, shortly before Servamp began serialisation. It’s one of two of their doujin I own and the only one I have a full translation of, thanks to @hello-vampire-kitty who’s very cool and deserves all your love and support. 

Even with just this small glimpse into Strike Tanaka’s pre-Servamp work I find it cool (and rather endearing) to see the many similarities in these very different stories. Big themes like dealing with loss, reaching out beyond the walls someone put up and moving on from the past are present in both, as are tropes like unhealthy devotion and overprotectiveness, or food as a means of conveying emotion, and even specific catch phrases like Mahiru’s iconic “simple is best”. And, as you can see, the character designs themselves don’t look all that unfamiliar either. 

Putting a one volume boys’ love doujin next to a long-running fantasy series like Servamp will never result in a perfect comparison, of course, but there are ways in which Shino and Jin are similar to their Servamp doppelgangers. The main story sees Shino (Misono but taller) try and move on from a family tragedy that left him and the people around him in a stagnant sort of isolation; and much of that is facilitated through the shenanigans of Jin (Lily lookalike that stole Tsubaki’s sunglasses), his love interest, who shared a strong relationship with Shino’s late father and now returned to the restaurant said father once owned to be a general nuisance. 

Jin doesn’t see a lot of development throughout most of the story. He mostly acts as a catalyst for Shino’s development; and up until a certain point it doesn’t even seem like he has ever had any problems himself and is simply a carefree, cheerful, very flirty guy who strives to either annoy or cheer up those around him. That impression is facilitated through his most Lily-like aspect: His near-constant smile. 

The reason I wanted to bring up Jin in the context of the panel all the way back in the original post is that this habit of his is a rather significant part of the story, as it’s pointed out several times, and receives a lot of attention in the doujin’s final chapter. There’s a lot of ways in which Jin’s smile is brought up and discussed, but the most significant to me is this: 

In which Jin, for the first time since entering the story, loses his smile and starts crying, which leads to Shino realising he recognises him as someone he has met long before the events of the present. Jin’s smile has served as a mask since the moment he entered the story, and it has hidden a rather significant truth about him that could only be discovered once that mask was broken. 

Jin’s secret is not a world-ending conspiracy like Lily’s, of course, it’s simply a memory he considers embarrassing because it reveals his own past and trauma and helplessness. But they are similar in that these truths are not something they readily reveal, that their respective other had to grow and learn and change in order to unveil – and to deal with, as well. 

In Mahoutsukai no Restaurant Shino ends up comforting Jin, as Jin has done for him before. I wouldn’t say it’s a prediction – again, it is a very different story from Servamp and far from a perfect comparison – but maybe my hope that Lily and Misono will end up in a similar place, that Misono will take all he’s learned from those around him and use it to soothe and comfort whatever it is he finds behind Lily’s mask. 

And maybe it’s a good guide on how to get there, as well. In order to crack Lily open, Misono will have to make him cry.

It’s been a bit now since chapter 131 was published but I am very slow and I’d like to say something about it; specifically about this particular part.

I love the way Lily smiles in this panel. Of all the Lily smiles we get throughout the entire manga, I think this is one of the best. Which is no small feat, because Lily is smiling most of the time he gets to be part of the story, even when busy with things like beheading some clown he found in a back alley, or being attacked by creepy puppet versions of himself, or scaring the living daylights out of his Eve’s shitty father. His habit of always smiling is even acknowledged in what I’d consider some of the more meta (but still official) Servamp content we have, like Lust pair’s (absolutely bonkers) Idol Drama CD track.

This is me, the always smiling, soothing-type big brother, the one where all the love is gathered, the lusty vampire, Snow Lily.

Of course by now we can assume that – like many things about Lily – his smiles aren’t entirely honest. Lily is guarding his truths very well, and he has always presented himself as harmless and sometimes downright ditzy while leaving no clues as to how he actually feels about the events going on around him, hiding it all away behind a smile. Misono even comments on this in Lust pair’s shared character song “Not Fragile Love”: 

What the two of us have built up over time now crumbles,What have you continued to hide from me behind that smile?

This panel, and this expression are the culmination of all that, I like to think. This calm, eerie smile in the face of Misono’s fury is nothing but a facade, and what a good one at that – we have no idea what his thoughts might be. The only thing we can be sure of with Lily, I think, is that he loves Misono (this is all for him, after all); and yet he doesn’t seem upset at all that Misono is currently not very happy with him, or may even never forgive him at all, as he himself stated. We can only guess that he might not be as pleased as he shows himself to be.

Misono’s challenge is to break his Servamp’s facade. When Lily’s betrayal was revealed I remember someone saying it is as though lust pair’s arc all the way back in volume four didn’t even happen; but I don’t think that is true at all – the lust arc we already had was needed to make Misono into someone capable of doing what he needs to do now; capable of seeing beyond the walls someone put up, to offer his love and to reach out himself when it is rejected, like he has watched his friends do before, time and time again. 

I love volume four with all my heart and I maintain it’s the best Servamp as a series has ever been (though maybe, the coming chapters are about to prove me wrong). But the story back then wasn’t really about Lily all that much. He didn’t go through any major changes, he only allowed hints of himself and his past to be revealed while all the big secrets we learned were about the Alicein family rather than him. Lily’s turn to be changed is now, and he will experience his change at the hands of Misono, who has come all the way back to him, back to the chess board, back to the very first technique he learned to use through his bond with Lily. 

Misono has gathered the strength to crack him open like a geode, has learned to meet all he finds inside with kindness, and compassion, and love. He will wipe that smile right off of Lily’s face.
