Do you think Kurt Vonnegut – first discussed by Dean and Chuck in 4.18 – is still relevant in SPN? Because I'm thinking about Chuck's creation as a Swiss watch, angels manipulating time (in s4-s6), the fragmenting of time in heaven and in hell: basically, time as we know it is just part of the fabric of the world/s built by Chuck. 1/

In 13.01 we discover Mary and John met at the film version of Slaughterhouse-5, in which the central character Billy Pilgrim is abducted by aliens who take him away from the trauma of WW2 to the planet Tralfamadore, where all of time exists at once - you are simultaneously a baby/child/adult and can pick any moment or memory by focusing on it. When Billy goes back to Earth he is ‘unstuck in time’ and his life starts jumping around rather than unfolding in one direction. 2/

[Sorry this got long] In SPN, you don’t 'live’ in a linear way in heaven, you jump about between memories (as in 5.16) – solving the problem of 2 marriages etc. Another KV book, Breakfast of Champions, is mentioned in 15.06. From Wikipedia: “Breakfast of Champions makes heavy use of metafiction, with Vonnegut appearing as the narrator/creator of the work, explaining why and how he makes this world as it is, changing things when and as he sees fit, and even being surprised by events.” 3/3

I mean if nothing else it’s still relevant in a passing way, be it Breakfast of Champions writing himself into the book, or the time elements you’re talking about. Chuck’s swiss watch is built into the worlds to keep stories tick tick ticking, whereas heaven’s memories are almost timeless. Even Kelly Kline was in her childhood memories *as* a child. Think of time in SPN as a thing Chuck uses to keep humans subject to his powers of control, something that keeps stories writing forward and keeping a linear storytelling objective, whereas human dreams outside of that are not subject to that, necessarily–or does time even exist there. Dark Side of the Moon had Sam and Dean bouncing around all different sorts of age periods of theirs, and that’s another Dabb piece. Dabb continues to tap on his old work, so I really doubt that’s a dropped thread when it remains so subtextually relevant.
