misaki tugs at the brim of her cap, scrapes at the pavement with her left foot in a last-ditch effort to extinguish some stubborn ashes. she kind of wishes she'd told them to get her a new pack of smokes and something quick to scarf down while they were inside the gas station, but thought better of it.

something in her chest twangs, hard and sharp and painful. she doesn’t know what it is that pushes her into pressing her body against his, arms connecting behind his back. there’s something hungry and starved about it, childishly wanting. clingy, a voice hisses in the recess of her skull. 

her voice, or her mother’s. she’s not sure.

the quiet rumble of his voice in her ear, flush against his chest, serves as a comfort. a balm. she sniffles, halfway to teary. she wants a cigarette. she wants to stay like this forever, just like she did when they were out in the snow and the cold and looking at the charred carcass of where she grew up.
