Rocko and Nakota tales from the land
A lovely story about generational storytellers. A young boy and his very old grandfather intertwine stories about native mythologies in this charming tale. It is captivating and moving and a lovely experience.

The Crystalline Cabaret presents house nocturnae
We ended up the night with what we thought was a cabaret but which was really a burlesque show with one singer doing one song. We love burlesque so we were fine with that but some people might have different expectations. We reread the show description and ok it is exactly what it states. And this is mighty fine burlesque with an emphasis on the nocturnal . The music was great
Marilyn Manson anyone! The dancers were all fantastic and the one song was amazing. Check this out but be aware of what you're getting yourself into.

How clowns have sex.
So this show is in a store on commercial drive Your Open Closet and the venue was donated by the lovely people at womyn's ware. Our clown sexpert is from Montreal and she is spreading the clown sex all across Canada. This is a very fun show. We saw many sex toys and some were very confusing. Personally we think the electric drill was a tad too dangerous. But to each his or her own. Turns out our clown is a sexpert in training and now so are we. A lovely lighthearted diversion that changes every time depending on the audience questions. So many questions and so little time. For a charming hour check it out.

This is a fascinating show that addresses all these questions and more. Do we get answers? That's up to you. Get out to the cultch and see this show.

Lip service
Absolutely hilarious. Dancing vulvas. That is correct. These two vulvas have mad funny skills. The music, the dancing, the singing and those fantastic songs keep you laughing. Nice humorous show with an educational message. This should be required viewing in every school. We had a great time.

John Bennett how I learned to hug!
Fantastic and brilliant Jon Bennett brings us a heartfelt amazingly funny show about all his girlfriends since the age of six. There are many doomed relationships and we hear all the gory details. No really, all the details and in the end we left with our faces hurting from laughing so hard. This show was a great way to cap off our second night. Jon got in late as a replacement so he isn't in the program.
He's at the waterfront so look him up on line and get your tickets now.

The Lady Show
We capped off our first day with the Lady Show. 4 very talented ladies bring on the sketch comedy. Some of these bits have been seen before at the ever popular Lady Parts show. Not everything works but about 80% does and that's more than enough make this show worth seeing. When Morgan Brayton is on she rocks it. Her lady bug was great and Diana's last bit about her forehead was brilliant. A nice funny show to round off our nite.

F*ck Tinder
This show made me so happy to be happily married. On line dating didn't exist while we were single. According to this show on line dating is really a crapshoot. Energetic performer and interesting story but a bit too long. We felt kind of sad for him. Seemed like a true relationship just wasn't in the cards for him. If you're doing any on line dating you might find your match in this show.

Day 4
Well we made it through the weekend seeing 16 shows. Two 8 show days.
Sunday was not smooth sailing. We started off at the firehall at How I lost one pound, almost the musical. There is very little musical in this musical. This is a solo show by Lesley Carlberg from Toronto. Basically it is about her life trying to become a singer/dancer/actor unsuccessfully. Her show is about how unsuccessful her efforts have been until, voila, a Fringe show. Good for her not giving up on her dreams.
Not really our cup of tea but I'm sure this show will find it's own audience. And there are tutus, lots of them.
Unfortunately she went about 7 minutes over time and our 30 minute window to drive to Granville Island, find parking, pay for parking and then run a 100 meter dash to the waterfront theater was reduced to 23 mins. Coach Travis will be proud. Yes we are fringe ready! We made it with only one minute to spare! Truly this is fringing! We saw Shadowlands by Savanna Harvey. It's a brave sole who puts on a Fringe show almost entirely in the dark at 1:30 on a Sunday afternoon. There is obvious talent here but it took awhile to figure out what was actually going on in this show. It was all very intriguing and in the end it will lead to many discussions and sometimes that's the key.
Next up the Inventor of all Things by Jem Rolls. The true story of Leo Szilard.
Jem never fails to give a dynamic performance. He must lose 5 pounds during every performance and you always learn something at a Jem Rolls show. If you have never seen him you simply must and if you already have seen him before then he is already on your list! Jem we are so glad that you are back!
The Blood Countess at the Waterfront was an eerie look into the life of the famous alleged mass murderer Elizabeth Bathory. She allegedly murdered 600 virgins so that she could bathe in their blood. Did she do it? Was she merely misunderstood? Was there a conspiracy against her? These questions are not really answered but it's a fascinating story. And we loved the added commercials for Bathory Blood Wine.
The Audience dies in the End. This is billed as funny, silly and weird. It's a perfect description. A pact with the devil and a journey around the world. Interesting effort and obviously we made it out alive.
Six Fine Lines by Mack Gordon. There is a undercurrent of sadness running through this show. A longing for connection with others. But there are also funny moments supplied by the audience participation in the newlyweds game show and family feuds. OK, we were the contestants in the newlyweds game. It was fun.
We had a blast. This show will keep you thinking about what it all really means. And the pizza delivery was a nice touch!
Unfortunately it also ran long and we had to run to our next show at the revue.
We literally had zero time to get there. Coach Travis I hope we continue to do you proud. The Gigantic Lying Mouth was unfolding on the revue stage. We are a house divided here. This is a story of a dead guy who died in a tragic yoga accident and he gets stuck in that shadowy zone between heaven and hell. Well he's a bit of an asshole so heaven is out of the question and he's a big fat lying asshole so he has to earn his way to purgatory by finally telling the truth. Was he successful?
You would have to draw your own conclusions.
Last show of the night was It Figures. A young couple try to come to terms with why they are even together and how to deal with an unexpected miscarriage.
Their relationship is based on shaky ground to begin with and an unplanned pregnancy just complicates things. A modern day slice of life.
Again it's up to you.
So that was our day. Again lots of fun running into our favourite fringey people!!!!
Robyn we love you!!!!!!!

How do we pick our shows?
Once we get the holy grail (the program) in our hot little hands we read it cover to cover. We look for our favourite returning performers first, then favourite theater companies and writers. Sometimes you may not even remember a performers name and you recognize their picture. If you enjoyed their work before then you will likely enjoy it again. And then you talk to the wonderful fringe fanatics in your life and you find out what they've seen and what they are looking forward to. We are so fortunate to have many wonderful and experienced fringie people in our circle. This year we have Mayumi and Greg freshly relocated from winnipeg. One of the Fringe meccas. They just travelled back to see this year's winnipeg fringe and gave us lots of great suggestions for shows to see here. Sandra, Jeanne and Diane are amazing researchers and they track down reviews of other fringes and match them up to shows here. Tom and Darren seem to know EVERYONE and they give us the inside track and they also travel to other fringes as well. Tom just got back from Edmonton fringe and now they are headed to the Victoria fringe along with Greg and Mayumi. And we always consider our esteemed executive director David Jordan's list and eagerly anticipate getting it every year. Sob Sob. This is his last year. Whatever shall we do? Buzz is the lifeblood of the Fringe festival. Saying talk amongst yourselves was never more appropriate. So DO IT! Talk to people in the lineups. Fringe lineups are parties. Talk to people at the fringe bar and talk to everyone you see who works or volunteers at the festival. Trust me they know stuff that you want to know! Be nice, be kind and fringe forever!

Day 6
Wow! This was a perfect fringe day. We started off with an excellent reading of Go No Go. It was all about the challenges that women faced trying to break into the space program as astronauts. The first draft was written in a remarkable 12 hours! Really looking forward to seeing this brought to life in the finished product. Headed to st 16 for 7 ways to die. Loved it. KIA productions. Two extremely talented actors deprived of using their faces or voices. Amazing how they manage to convey so much emotional depth without saying a word. Two people living across the hall from each other and one of them is determined to die. Fantastic! We spent the rest of the evening at the cultch and loved both our shows there. First we saw Bondage. A kinky little show about a dominantrix and a customer and how their relationship develops. You could really feel those slaps! Both actors were great and you couldn't see who they were until the end. Again conveying everything while encased in black latex suits. Must have been hot in there! And capping the night off we saw Soul Samurai. To say we were blown away is an understatement! This show has it all. It's a combination of escape to the badlands, graphic novels, cartoons, Jackie Chan, revenge and a vampire lesbian love story. And much more. The fight scenes are stellar. Loved the swordplay. Technology heavy with parts filmed ahead of time and played in the background helping to provide back story. These integrated perfectly with the show and it was kickass funny! You've got to see this show!

Day 5
Today was a great day!! Great weather and lots of great conversations.
Wonderful to see everyone out and about and taking in the shows.
Bushel and Peck was our first show. Very weird, very delightful and very fringey!
This is a very physical show and we watch the characters relationship unfold in so many interesting ways. What's it all about? Who knows but it was fun to watch.
Next up was Ain't True and Uncle False. We've heard some varying opinions about this show but we loved it! Paul Strickland is a skillful storyteller and all of the characters he plays are wonderfully extreme. This trailer court sounds like just a jolly good time!
We had been looking forward to Nancy Kenny's Everyone Dies in December for days! After seeing her in Your Princess is in another Castle a few days ago we were eagerly waiting to see this one too. This woman is amazing! She actually did both shows today. They are radically different shows and this must have been difficult but she pulled it off easily. In this show she plays a funeral director. Actually she deals with the bodies and she treats them all with love and respect and they all have a story to tell and so does she. Highly recommended!
Last but not least we saw Cat Kidd in Hyena Subpoena. This one seems to be flying under the radar but it needs to be brought into the light. We loved this show and we loved this performer. She is so incredibly high energy and embodies the various animals she plays as she slinks across the stage. Her stories are riveting and they shift effortlessly from the animal stories to the very human stories. The parallels were undeniable. Please get your tickets soon!
We won't be on the island tomorrow. We will start off at studio 16 for 7 ways to die and then out to the cultch for Bondage and Soul Samurai.
Keep fringing!!

Day 3 continued
The rest of the evening was also spent laughing our faces off.
We saw THE BIRDMANN: THE BIRDHOUSE. The triumphant return of The Birdmann and Egg from Australia. This time they did a family friendly show outdoors in Railspur park. The fact that we chose the only day it was raining to see this outdoor show matters not. It calmed down to a mere drizzle when the show began. This is the power of the Birdmann. He had a large and enthusiastic audience while he and his trusty sidekick Egg saved the world from the regurgitator. Because fun can change the world. Yes it can! Enjoy the stuffed animal fight! No more spoilers! Go!
Next up Lana Schwartz from Australia as well in Lovely Lady Lumps. Yes you do see her breasts, alot. She is very lucky to have them. She is a cancer survivor and this is her story. She is also a stand up comedian and it serves her well in this educational and funny show. There are some good laughs but under everything this is a serious topic. Just don't tell her it's a journey. Check it out.
Last show of the night. Again with the laughs at Field Zoology . Maybe it was the late nite. Maybe it was the fact that we had already seen 7 shows that day. Don't know but we really enjoyed it. Deadpan performance that generated lots of laughs and great way to end the night. We sure hope he finds that tarantula!
All in all a great day. We saw so many honorary Miranda posse members out and about! This is such a great community!
