I am so SICK of people saying mirabel was a doormat that “forgave abuela immediately” she didn’t even forgive her?? “nothing can ever be broken that we can’t fix together” seems more like a wow this is a bad situation but I’m willing to let you help me fix it and fix our broken bond too. Like idk I never interpreted that as forgiveness. Some argue that the hug was the forgiveness but I’m pretty sure alma initiated that not mirabel. Also she hugs almost everyone in the movie hugs can have multiple meanings it’s just a form of support.

Jouvente's most awkward lunch is finally underway.

"So you're still traveling around, huh?"

"Mhm."

"Any special reason you're in Jouvente?" you ask, and try not to get your hopes up.

Siffrin doesn't answer for a beat, cutting off another small piece of the croque-madame he ordered after you reassured them that you were going to pay and didn't mind. The poached egg yolk oozes over the ham and cheese sandwich; Sif moves his fork around to sweep the few drops that run down to the plate back up on the bread. "Um. I...wanted to look for jobs."

Oof. Feels like your hopes got up without your permission. It's fine, they've been put back in place. "Oh! That's right, you used to do odd jobs, right? Any luck?"

"It's going alright! So...what about you? With the..." Siffrin trails off, their brow furrowing in a frustration all too familiar to you. You quickly finish chewing through the broccoli and egg in your mouth to bail them out.

"With the tailoring? Well, I could say it's only sew-sew, but actually, I'm really enjoying it!"

Okay, you had to wedge that pun in there, but still, you thought it'd get a smile out of Sif, maybe a chuckle. Instead, Siffrin looks confused before giving you a smile best described as 'polite'. Sure, his mouth turns up and all, but you don't think he got it in the slightest. "That's good!"

...Probably your mistake for going for sewing puns right after they forgot the word for your work. Yep. Move on, Isabeau. "Yeah! I really lucked out--the store was owned by a seamstress who's retiring. Well, still is owned, but we've got a contract for me buying the store from her. She already moved out to live with her bonded partners, but she stops in twice a week to teach me what I still need to learn about making clothes."

Sif...nods, encouraging you to go on.

"She's cool! She pretty much worked as a seamstress all her life, so she really knows her stuff. Tells me right away when I'm making a design way more work than it should be." Sometimes all the fiddling details were necessary, but other times, you could get the right effect a simpler way.

Siffrin nods, still smiling politely.

Huh. You scoop up another bite of your quiche as an excuse not to talk for a minute, noting that Sif goes for another cut piece of croque-madame at the same time. You never thought a lunch with Sif could be awkward, but...

Boy, is this awkward!

Why is it awkward? You and Siffrin were thick as thieves during your adventure. Sure, it's been a while, you couldn't expect things to be the same right off the bat, but...

“M’dame Odile and Mira will be glad to hear you’re doing okay.”

Siffrin nods. Then he looks confused. Then...you're not sure what that expression is.  “Wait, are they here too?  In Jouvente?”

“No, no, but we’ve been writing!  The last letter was a week ago, they were going to see...aha, apparently there's a play about Mirabelle? She said it was embarrassing, but she and Odile were too curious not to go. Hopefully they liked it!" You weren't all that curious yourself. After all, you'd already lived the adventure. You knew the real story, the real Mirabelle! You hoped the play portrayed her and everyone else well, but you were pretty sure there was no way they had all the details.

Also...you had a bad feeling you were probably portrayed as a jock through and through. Since that was how you acted. You could picture the cast: determined Mirabelle, leading the way; clever Odile, strategizing against hordes of Sadnesses and then the King himself; fun-loving Sif, raising everyone's spirits with jokes and protecting them from traps; brave Bonnie, keeping everyone healthy with good food; ...meathead Isabeau, whose good point was being too dumb to fear the danger.

You're jolted out of that extremely unhelpful thought by Siffrin's next question. “They’re traveling…together?”

...That's a weird tone. “Housemaidens usually go on at least one pilgrimage, not sure if you knew that.  Since M’dame was interested in seeing a little of what Vaugarde's like when it's normal, Mira asked her if they could travel together. So they spent a few months in Vaugarde, and right now they're in Poteria. I think they're planning on Lichtland next? Eventually they'll get to Ka Bue, but it sounded like both of them planned on taking their time.“

Sif's brow is furrowed again as he looks down at his plate. Is he jealous? You were jealous too when you found out. But you get it! Of course Mira and M'dame didn't ask you. You were busy being a sad sack about Siffrin. Well, and even without that, why should they have invited you? It was their trip. Not like you had a good reason to tag along, just...

It would have been nice to.

You can't complain--Jouvente's been good to you. You were the guest of honor at a party hosted by the city, your family is so proud of you (though you know Guy is just happy to boast that he's a Savior's sibling to his partner of the week, which keeps making you secondguess how sincere everyone else is when they reach out to you), the neighbors in your new place have been warm and friendly, you got to start on designing clothes so much faster than you thought you would.

You just miss Mira and Odile a whole lot. You miss Bonbon. You miss what you had with Siffrin, because everything about this lunch feels so off, and at this point you have to ask.

"Sif...you are doing okay, right?"

They immediately smile brightly enough that their eye closes. "Of course I am! Why wouldn't I be?"

Mirabel and Félix?

WOOF okay I’m back I had a busy day today.

MIRABEL AND FÉLIX

They make a good pair! Both high energy and very loving people.

Félix is also a very loving Tío in general so he’s always looking to find any interests him and Mirabel share.

They often end up doing house-centric chores together since they both lack gifts, and usually during those times they bond.

Pre-casita collapse, before Mira was out in the town helping out, her and Félix would create games with the boring chores they got to make them more bearable.

Who can sweep and mop faster? Who will get a compliment from Alma? First one to find a blue petal from Isabela’s flowers gets the others desert! 

Usually Maribel wins but honestly Felix is likely going easy on her…. Or that’s what he says she is very good at mopping.

This was in a cut scene but he’ll occasionally try to give some advice about being giftless in the same way Agustin will do. Mirabel has to very gently get him to stop, but it’s the thought that counts.

I’ve seen this headcanon elsewhere, but I really love the idea that Félix taught Mirabel how to dance.

Félix often seeks Mirabel out to help him with gift giving since it’s her love language.

Though he doesn’t just take her ideas, they’ll work on something together.

Félix and Mirabel are a very good pair. High energy and very family oriented. Not to mention their borderline tooth rotting optimism. I hope in a sequel series we see these two interact outside of “We Don’t Talk About Bruno”.

Younger Siblings Tournament Bracket Reveal

A few things I want to mention before I reveal the bracket (and make the post really long because all the matchups will be listed in text):

Seeding of fictional characters in tumblr polls is inherently subjective. I did try to make it so that more popular characters/media would (most likely) face off against each other in later rounds, but I may be overestimating or underestimating the popularity of some characters/media, especially ones I'm not familiar with. There are some round 1 matchups that are probably a closer match but none of them are between the strongest candidates... I think.

The more niche characters will probably get obliterated in the first round as per Squimbus' Law. This is a tumblr poll and I do fully expect more popular characters to sweep, but that doesn't mean you can't encourage your friends to give your niche faves a fighting chance.

Also there are some matchups I literally just thought would be funny. Please don't take this too seriously.

To understand the true scope of her torment, it should first be made clear that she was the type of girl who didn’t believe in romance. Not because she was particularly cynical – she didn’t think so, at least – or someone who thought emotions and love were silly. But because the existence of crushes and romantic feelings was utterly bewildering to her, as fictional as wandless magical prodigies or tame nundus or on-demand seers.

She’d rather enjoyed those sweeping romances before she realized people actually felt stuff like that in real life and that she was expected to fall in love as well.

Which was to say she watched Jade sob over Tommy Jenkins getting Mirabel Fawcett flowers, or Anna jump for joy over Chrissy Ford asking her out with nothing more than polite bafflement.

And that she ended up having to eavesdrop on James Potter and Lily Evans with unending misery, because these two were even worse than her dormmates.

ah, gosh. some folks asked for it yesterday and i forgot to deliver, so heres the silly thing i was talkin about. (the mira i reference here is specifically from @the-bitter-ocean 's take on a looping mira au! wa!)

The first time you see this Mira, you swear you feel your heart stop. You got here (wherever this place is) second. After this m'dame. M'dame Odile looks similar enough to yours that seeing her wasn't all that strange. She looked different, but not wildly so. You think you shocked her more than she did you.

Seeing Mira, though… she walks into the room and the moment you see each other, there's a mutual realization. Neither of you actually know each other, but there's a kind of understanding when you see someone who has the same face as a friend except for a scar in front of you.

The door closes behind her, you hear it latch shut. It locks. You're, uh… not super sure if you're breathing? You try to remember how it's done, how to calm yourself down, but it catches in your throat. All you can do is stare at Mira's wide eye with both of your own. She stares right back.

It's strange because you know for certain that she's not yours, exactly. Not the Mira you know and love, the one that helped to save you from yourself. You wonder if this is how Loop felt seeing you for the first time.

Still… that doesn't stop you from getting to your feet. It doesn't stop you from walking forward or her from meeting you half way. You scoop this Mira, the girl with a face you don't quite know, up into a sweeping hug. She squeezes you tight as the two of you spin and before you know it: you're laughing!

When you let go, she stares up at you with just one eye, full of curiosity and you think maybe some fear. "Hi!"

"Hi!" You echo, grinning. "I'm Isabeau!"

She giggles. "I know! I'm Mirabelle!"

"I know!!"

How about chore distribution if they were in a Roommate situation? Assuming everyone had a private space

Obviously Bonnie cooks! Prep cook is Odile for breakfast because she wakes up early, Isabeau or Mirabelle for lunch, and Siffrin for dinner because he's more of an evening person. Dish washer is Isabeau for breakfast bc he's energetic in the mornings, Siffrin for lunch, and Mirabelle or Odile for dinner. (But if anyone is out and about at their assigned time, someone else will happily step in.) Nille was really reluctant to let Bonnie be in charge of most meals because kids shouldn't have to do that, but she was won over by how much Bonnie enjoys it, so she only takes over as head chef when they ask her to. Otherwise, Nille does all of the grocery shopping, because it stresses her out to not know what food is in the house and how much it cost.

Odile likes having her own space just so, so she mostly just takes care of her own room and bathroom and cleans up after herself, and sweeps the floors so nothing gets tracked around. Sometimes Siffrin helps her, though, because he likes to quietly complete tasks with his family. But only Siffrin no one else is allowed to. :|

Siffrin, Isabeau, and Mirabelle share laundry; Isabeau usually washes it (3 people's is nothing compared to like 8+) (and he knows how to treat various fabrics and has strong laundry-hefting arms) and they all fold and put away together. Nille does hers and Bonnie's — unless Isabeau gets to it first. Nille keeps trying to get him back by doing his but he's always one step ahead. :/

Mirabelle cleans the bathrooms (except Odile's) because she thinks washing and scrubbing is super satisfying. Nille and Bonnie clean the kitchen because they're in charge of it anyway. Siffrin does the yardwork because they like methodical repetitive tasks, and being outside, and watching things grow. Everyone takes turns helping with the small garden, though!

People try to tidy up after themselves for the most part, but everyone has their own things they're more particular about and tend to fix if they notice it's been left messy: Mirabelle makes people's beds if she's hanging out in their room (perfectionist parents), Nille likes the shoes to all be lined up neatly by the door (paranoid about losing them), Isabeau brings people's stray belongings back to their rooms (siblings who sometimes borrowed/lost/broke items left in communal spaces), Odile brings stray dishes back to the kitchen (depressed dad). Bonnie is immune to this effect because they're young enough that they have to be coaxed into cleaning up even just their own stuff, and Siffrin is immune to this effect because they don't have any pre-existing house-living habits.

And, once a season everyone pitches in for a big deep-cleaning weekend!

(Loop is kinda in and out, and physically exempt from some human functions, so they don't have official chores. But they like helping Nille with the shopping/kitchen, and they usually let Isabeau wash their clothes, and they sometimes take on home improvement projects.)

Anyhoo!! Lol not much of a writer.. Soo this will probably not be greatest of work, mistakes here n there I just had a rush of motivation, oh well enjoy ig!✨

(It's Isabeau's Birthday today.)

You remember because Mirabelle and them had all gathered together to discuss it when Isabeau was out elsewhere. You all came together a week before and talked about getting gifts for Isa's special day.

And so here you are all at this rental lakeside house for the next few days. Floralbreeze Lake is the name of this place, named after windy weather and with all of the flowers that always grew all year. A perfect, serene place for any occasion. The house rent price was 50 but as Saviors of Vaugarde, they were given a pass for their saving everyone quest. The owner's way of gratitude for saving the world.

Everyone's here in the big living room which shares space with the kitchen and a fire place. Isabeau is sitting at the wooden countertop with Bonnie, who's a few feet away near the stove, who's busy at cooking up some food for the occasion!

( The scent of cooked veggies and baked fish fills the air. The clanking noise of metal and sizzling of oil.)

There was some baked fish, vegetable stir fry and vegetable beef stew, some drinks and sweets like White Chocolate Mousse and White Chocolate Cake for Isabeau. The white chocolate dishes were Bonnie's gift to Isabeau. Mirabelle sits down next to Bonnie and Odile takes the other side, leaving Siffrin to sit at Isabeau's side and Siffrin was more happy to have it this way.

Siffrin watches as Odile takes a slice of baked fish, Mirabelle scoops some stew into a small bowl and Bonnie takes a small serving of stir fry, Isabeau gets some of fish and Siffrin, himself takes a nice serving of stir fry. They all eventually take portions of all dishes expect for desserts since that's for later. Everyone is occupied with eating and chatting, enjoying the warm, cozy atmosphere.

( Everything tastes so good! As always Bonnie did a great job!)

Bringing another piece of fish to your mouth, and so you chew and savor the flavor. Your fork sinks into a carrot and then into another piece of fish, you eat both, listening into the conversations around you as usual. Mirabelle is happily gushing away about her favorite books with Odile, Bonnie's listening to one of Isabeau's stories as a Defender. You gaze sweeps upon your family members as you finish up your last bits of your meal. You take a sip of water before settling down in your chair. You reach into your pockets, to double check your gift to Isa, a wooden figure of him in his fighting position. Your hands pet against the smooth and carefully carved wood after getting some assurance to clear away your doubts. You put your empty dish to the side to make some room.

Bonnie and Isabeau finish up after you and Odile and Mira do the same sometime after the other two. You and Mira volunteer to gather the dirty dishes while Bonnie and Odile, and Isa put away the leftovers somewhere. You put the three plates and utensils into the sink, Mira puts the remaining dishes along with it. The dishes will be washed later, for now you all have a birthday to celebrate.

Odile and Bonnie bring over the desserts, Isabeau has a excitied and joyful look in his eyes as he sits down again. You put the candles into the cake, Mira is the one to light them up, the cake is pushed closer to Isabeau.

"Happy Birthday Isabeau!" Mirabelle beamed.

"Happy Birthday Za!! Don't forget to make a wish!!" Bonnie rejoiced with their arms in the air.

"Happy Birthday Isabeau." Odile added, adjusting her glasses.

(You breathe in and out. It's your turn.)

"Happy Birthday Isa." You say in a gentle and kind tone.

Isabeau smiles delightfully at everyone, a small hint of blush showing on his cheeks.

"Thanks everyone! I really appreciate it. This is the best birthday anyone could ask for!" Isabeau thanked, Isabeau closes his eyes for a few moments before blowing out the candles. A small round of applause and cake is about to be sliced and given out to everyone. Mira is the one to slice the cake, giving Isabeau the slice with extra berries.

Everyone gets a slice of the white chocolate cake eventually. You decide to skip out on this one but you do snag a few berries for yourself from Isabeau and the others. Isabeau also takes the mousse once Bonnie hands one to him.

Presents are next, Bonnie explains that the white chocolate desserts were their gift to Isabeau, Isabeau gives an extra thanks Bonnie for the desserts. Odile pulls out her gift, it's something small and wrapped in simple wrapping paper, Mira's gift seems somewhat big, hidden under slanted lined wrapping paper with a small bow on top.

You reach into your pocket and pull out the wooden figure, and hold it firmly. Isabeau looks around excitedly, he smiles so brightly and his eyes sparkle with delight. Isabeau moves his hands towards to you, you hand over the wooden figure of him. His face shines even brighter at the sight of your gift.

You meet his gaze without tucking away into your cloak or hat. The wood figure of Isabeau is smooth and clean, chipped and carved into perfection with small noticeable details like his earrings, indents for his fist, clothing. Isabeau holds it with great care, a quick glance with a mix of his "fufufu" and "Really" expression over at Odile, and Odile shoots a amused look back.

"Thanks Sif, I love it." Isa murmurs to you with a smile.

Odile goes next, she shoves over her gift across the countertop. "Here you go, Isabeau." Odile stated.

Isabeau grabs it and pulls off the paper, revealing the hidden contents. It's a small wooden sewing kit, with some simple leaf patterns decor within was some threads of different shades, clips and needles and a pair of small scissors with some other sewing materials that you can't remember are called.

"Whoa!!! Thank you Madam!" Isabeau bellowed, a hand examining the sewing contents while the other hand secures your gift. Isabeau scans through the small box, he closes it and gives another thanks as Odile nods and Isabeau puts the box and figure safely to the side.

Mirabelle excitedly gives her gift to Isabeau next. Isabeau rips off the paper, Two books now sit on the countertop. They're new books, all nice and clean in good condition and having that classic new book scent. "Ummm! I hope you like them!" Mira speaks with a grin.

"Ooh! Two new books and they're about romance!! I can't wait to give these two a read when I can!" Isabeau responded with joy and excitement. He flips over the books a few times to get a close look at them. Getting in quick looks as Isabeau flips through the pages. He puts all his gifts together, the books sit besides the sewing box and the Isabeau figure rests upon one of the book covers.

Isabeau signals everyone to come in closer to him for a group hug, Odile gives her amused expression again, Mirabelle's expression glows with delight and Bonnie smiles, arms in the air like they're cheering. Isa looks at you, getting that confirmation from you, you give a nod.

You all come together, Isabeau's arms wrap around all of your family members. Your arms and everyone's arms wrap around Isabeau, everyone embraces with love, care and warmth. Like a cozy warm blanket shielding against the cold. Everyone's happy and everything's good.

Okay, separate from my response to the Jiang Cheng hater post, but I think we're starting to view the word "abuse" the way we view "brainwash" when it comes to Chinese culture.

I always hated how people talked about how people in China are brainwashed by communists. "Brainwashed" meant you can't think for yourself. You're supposed to be criticizing the government, but instead you're insulting the intelligence and free will of the people. The same people who took to the streets in 1989.

(There is a beautiful article that goes deeper into how loaded this word is! Please read it, this is how I learned that "brainwashed" was originally a Chinese word that was loaned into English instead of the other way around! It originally meant to move on from the literal Century of Humiliation China experienced due to imperialism and invasion, but translated into something different!)

Similarly, what does "abuse" mean? To hurt the people in your care? But all parents hurt their children, even if unintentionally. Is it wrong to ground your kid now? Where is the line? In a lot of the discourse I see, people who jump to say Yu Ziyuan or Jiang Cheng is abusive is missing the point. If you took away the word "abuse," I think anyone, Chinese or not, would say what Yu Ziyuan did was wrong. She made everyone miserable. She pitted her children against their best friend they considered a brother. She made the past generation's arguments a burden for the next.

With Jiang Cheng, it's a bit more complicated. He's clearly doing something right if Jin Ling feels safe around him. It is considered normal, even in a modern context, to threaten to break his legs (there goes Uncle Jiang again, being dramatic). Him slapping Jin Ling is, again, era-appropriate, but it's still definitely not cool of him.

But when people say he's "abusive," it sweeps away all the nuance. It dismisses the amount of intergenerational trauma it took to get to this point. And it's personal to us because frankly, many Chinese diaspora are diaspora now because of war and famine. White Americans cannot say the same. It doesn't mean we don't think certain things our parents do are wrong. We have brains. We fucking know, and we're working really hard to not to pass that on. But our line and personal tolerance for how our parents treated us differs from person to person. I'm definitely more prickly about how my parents talk to me than a lot of my friends.

I've been seeing a lot of discourse over what is and isn't abuse over the years, and it's not just from Chinese people. It's my Colombian friends when they talk about the grandmother from Encanto. Yeah, we don't like her behaviors, but abuse? Did she strike Mirabel? Did she verbally insult her? Did she send her to her room for no reason? She didn't. And this is a woman who did things a certain way because that's how she rebuilt after watching her husband get killed while fleeing from drug cartel violence (implied, definitely believed by my Colombian friends, unsure if canonically confirmed).

"Abuse" can be such a code word for "horrible human who's out to get her children" without the nuance or regard for our own autonomy as people who had to grow up with toxic behavior from our guardians. It's a loaded word.

A summer trip they think of fondly: Delfina’s family haven’t really gone on a lot of trips, mostly staying in the encanto year-round, but there was one summer when she was eleven that Isabela and her wife took a trip to Charmington and decided to take all the Madrigal children with them. They stayed by the shore for two whole weeks, and little Delfina, who had never seen the ocean before, discovered her love of swimming and had the one of the best times of her life.

Their favorite Disney princess: She’s always admired Queen Belle and her kindness, intelligence, and dedication to her family and subjects.

The first song they would dance to with their partner at their wedding: She and Lonnie would likely dance to “Dance With Me” by beabadoobee.

If they have tattoos or piercings: In addition to her regular ear piercings, she does have two small tattoos, a candle and a butterfly, on her right shoulder as a tribute to her family’s history, and she wants to get more of both in the future.

The scariest moment in their life: When Chad suddenly roped her into his tirade against the VKs at Family Day, ridiculing her use of magic with her gift and accusing her of conspiring with the VKs against Auradon. Standing there with everybody at the event staring at her and not knowing whether they would believe Chad and come after her or not, Delfina hadn’t trusted these people not to side with a respected prince over a magic-using commoner, and she had never been more terrified in her life.

If they would break the law: It certainly wouldn’t be her first instinct, but she could likely be persuaded to perform some light theft or breaking and entering if it was someone she trusted getting her to do it.

Their favorite reality show (because everyone secretly has one): She actually doesn’t have one, for the sole reason that she doesn’t watch a lot of TV; there aren’t a lot in the encanto, despite Mirabel’s attempts to modernize it, and she never really got into it even after coming to Auradon Prep.

If they have a favorite chore: She really loves sweeping! It’s the chore she did the most growing up, and she finds it calming.

If they like being in pictures and what faces they make in them: She absolutely loves being in pictures, and in any ones she’s in you will catch her with a bright smile on her face and usually making peace signs or bunny ears on whoever she’s standing with.

If they get along with kids: Having grown up with four younger siblings and a whole gaggle of cousins, Delfina absolutely gets along with kids, and is amazing at taking care of them too.
