As Royalty, Not Lovers (miphvali)
Title: As Royalty, Not Lovers
Theme: Royal arranged marriage AU
Requested by: @dragongirlie56 (Tumblr)
Word Count: 6156
Warnings: very light swearing and some mentions of violence.
Other Notes: Modern AU and the characters are a kind of Hylian hybrid type thing. So the Rito have wings, the Zora have gills and webbed fingers, ect. Contains OCs for plot purposes.
<>
The car ride had been extremely boring and despite flying in as close as they could to the Zora's secluded capital, it was still a whole ordeal to get to the palace. On top of this, it had been raining non-stop with a rather thick mist making it difficult to see anything 10 feet beyond the car.
Revali had been staring aimlessly for the past two hours, miserably wishing he was back home in the usually clear weather of Rito Village.
"Look, son," Illios, King of the Rito and his father, nudged Revali's shoulder. "The mist is letting up."
Revali blinked to attention and looked out the window. His father was correct, with the rain lessening and the mist slowly curling away as the sun finally showed itself. In the distance he could see the crystalline castle of the Zora, blue lights glowing softly through the dissipating fog. It sat above the lake, nestled in amongst the mountains, and Revali silently noticed how closed-in it all seemed. Nothing at all like the openness of his actual home.
Although he supposed this was home now.
Illios noticed his son's unusual silence and sighed. "Everything will be alright, Revali. You've met her before."
"Four times. Once when I five, twice when I was eight, and once again when I was eleven," Revali tried to keep his bitterness out of his tone. "I'm twenty-two now, Father. Meeting her before does nothing for me if its been eleven years. I am still marrying a complete stranger."
Illios contemplated this for a long moment. "I suppose that is a fair point. But Revali, just keep in mind that this is for the greater good. This benefits both our peoples."
"At the expense of my own freedoms."
"I've told you, Revali. As my heir, you would have to marry and have your own heirs. Our line must continue."
"If that is the case, why am I moving to Zora's Domain and Princess Mipha isn't moving to Rito Village?" Revali practically snapped back. "Doesn't she have a brother who could become king? Why isn't my younger sister being married off to Prince Sidon?"
A sigh. "Because Prince Sidon is already arranged to marry Lady Yona and move to her country and rule her kingdom. You know that to solidify our alliance one of my children was to marry one of King Dorephan's and sending your younger sister to marry Princess Mipha isn't exactly going to produce any children."
Revali scoffed and Illios pinched the bridge of his nose, sighing again. "I always knew your desire for freedom would only strengthen your rebellious streak. Look, you can either look at this like a cage or see it as an opportunity. I can't tell you how to think, but as your king I want you to take it as an opportunity."
This caused a slight spark of curiosity in Revali's chest. "And as my father?"
Illios' green eyes softened slightly. "As your father I want you to at least be kind to her, regardless of what you think."
<>
Two thrones sat on a raised platform in the main hall, in which one of these sat the large, muscular King Dorephan. He smiled as the father and son approached, gesturing widely. "Welcome, King Illios and Prince Revali! I hope you did not have too much difficulty arriving here."
Revali bit back the comment that arose in his throat while his father responded. "Not at all, King Dorephan. It is a pleasure to be in your court again. I presume everything is in place?"
"Ah, almost. But while we discuss that, why don't we let your son meet with my daughter?" King Dorephan nodded to an older man standing the side. "Muzu, could you escort him please?"
The man, Muzu, nodded. "Of course. Please follow me, Prince Revali."
With an uncertain glance at his father, Revali turned and followed as instructed. He vaguely remembered learning about the Royal Advisor Muzu, who had extra-pronounced gills on his neck right below the corners of his jaw and who looked older than the king. Hylia, he probably was.
Muzu took him through a few sets of doors and past many indoor waterfalls. As a people with features meant for an aquatic environment, water was everywhere within their structures and often used an extra source of quick transportation. Revali subconsciously glanced at his navy-blue wings, so large they dragged slightly on the floor, and he suddenly felt very out of place.
Muzu silently led him into an open-aired room with, you guessed it, more water flowing off the walls. The stone faces of the mountains could be seen through one of the massive windows, the sunlight streaming in in such a different manner than back home. Small tables scattered the room and at one sat a magenta-haired woman in a strapless silver dress.
Muzu stepped to the side to let Revali pass through the doorway and announced, "Princess Mipha, Prince Revali has arrived."
The woman looked up and Revali's mind vaguely connected how this person was the same one from eleven years ago. She had always had sweet facial features, but now that sweetness was combined with a mature beauty that came with womanhood. Despite being a year older than him, she looked far younger, and was ridiculously shorter too. Her magenta hair was pulled loosely into a bun, loose waves bouncing as she stood to greet them, with the sunlight glinting off her silver tiara.
She offered a soft smile and a curtsy as she joined them. "Prince Revali. A pleasure."
Years of education kicked in and he offered a small bow. "Princess Mipha. It has been quite some time."
"Indeed it has," she smiled slightly as he straightened again. "I wish we could have arranged a meeting prior to this development, but I'm afraid it didn't fit into anyone's schedules."
Those words sounded exactly the same as what his father had told him. "It is quite alright. Everyone is very busy, of course."
She nodded, gesturing to one of the tables. "Please, sit."
He did as asked, glancing back at Muzu who stood by the door with a rather menacing expression on his face. Revali's nose scrunched up slightly before turned his attention back to Mipha. "So..."
Long silence. She glanced over at Muzu, who was currently looking out the window, and she suddenly leaned over and whispered. "I don't know about you, but I feel...incredibly awkward."
Revali suddenly felt himself relax and with a slight chuckle, he whispered, "Me too."
She flashed a brilliant smile and he vaguely wondered what had happened to her over the years since they had met last. "Well then...how have you been?"
<>
"You're leaving already? Its only been two days!"
King Illios stood by the car, watching the servants load up baggage. "I have important matters to attend to at home. I assure you, I'll be back in three weeks for the wedding."
Revali scoffed. "Fine."
Illios raised an eyebrow. "Ever since you were old enough to walk, you wanted to do things completely on your own. Since when do you need me to hold your hand?"
This earned him a glare and Revali stalked back inside without so much as a goodbye. His father sighed, rubbing a hand over his face. "Hylia, help my son and help the poor princess who has to put up with him."
Inside, Revali made his way back to his room. His stomach growled with hunger, but there was no way he was eating another one of the horrendous Zora breakfasts. There was nothing wrong with having fish for dinner, but for breakfast? That was too much. Especially since they had fish three times a day. At this rate he was going to need his own cook just so he could eat.
Just as he reached his door, hurried footsteps announced by the clack of heels reached his ears. He paused, looking down the hall to see Princess Mipha hurrying towards him, looking out of breath with waves bouncing loose from her bun. She was followed by a rather disgruntled and wheezing Muzu, who did not look happy.
Revali frowned as Mipha reached him, Muzu trailing behind. "Princess Mipha? Is something wrong?"
"No, not at all!" She took a deep breath and composed herself. "They're announcing the engagement party. Zora News on Channel 16 is coming to do a quick live of my father's announcement."
Muzu had finally caught up, wheezing in a very concerning manner. "Princess Mipha, you should've just let me send a servant! You'll be on TV in 15 minutes and look all flushed!"
"I'll be fine!"
"Muzu is right, though," Revali frowned. "You could have just sent a servant."
She paused, looking back at him almost shyly. "I...wanted to tell you myself."
For some reason, this endeared her just a bit to him. Over the past two days they had chatted about their developments in hobbies and education. He had found her to be a good debater, once you got her to get over her fear of hurting your feelings with her opinion. And although these conversations had let them know more about each other, he hadn't felt any pull of friendship or attraction to her at all.
Until now, at least.
For some reason he found himself smiling. "Well, I appreciate that. Makes it all the more personal. Now if I heard Muzu correctly, we're supposed to be filming? Should we head to the throne room?"
"Oh, of course!" She turned with a soft smile. "Follow me."
Muzu shot Revali a look the Rito prince couldn't quite understand before they both began following the princess. It took them only a few minutes before they reached their destination, coming into the room to find cameras being set up, people calling instructions to each other, and the Zora king have makeup put on his face.
All this was familiar to Revali. There had been countless times the Flying Eagle news team had come for live events in the Rito palace. He usually just couldn't wait for them to be done so he could leave.
King Dorephan noticed them there and he nodded. "There you all are. There's a bench for you two to sit on while I make the announcement. Muzu, you're in the usual place."
The three of them nodded, Mipha quickly locating the bench and heading over, Revali trailing behind. He waited patiently as she settled herself on the bench, readjusting her dress before looking up at him. He took that his cue to sit down and he did, sighing as the makeup crew popped up and started doing his face.
He wasn't sure what he face he was making but he suddenly heard Mipha giggle. He turned towards her ever so slightly with his eyebrow arching up. She giggled again, suddenly clapping a hand over her mouth.
"I'm sorry!" She exclaimed. "I should not be laughing at you, that's so inappropriate! Its just...your face. You look so done with everything!"
The makeup team scurried off to wherever they had come from and as Revali regarded Mipha for a minute, he was surprised to feel a smile on his face. Usually he would give a rather snappy response but for some reason...he was glad she found it funny.
Hylia, what is wrong with me?
Still smiling, he rolled his eyes dramatically, turning forward. The princess giggled again, causing the corners of his lips to twitch as his face threatened a full-out grin.
Then he caught sight of Muzu. The advisor was glaring at them most furiously, mouthing something about "inappropriate behaviors" while King Dorephan settled himself on the throne. Revali saw Mipha's teeth disappear behind closed lips, her expression becoming schooled to a calm, relaxed demeanor. Despite himself, Revali felt a surge of some unfamiliar emotion, wishing he could make her smile again because it was such a nice thing. That would have to wait until later, though.
He frowned. He didin't have the slightest clue what was causing this sudden shift in his behavior. He usually didn't think twice if someone was angry or happy. Why was he suddenly thinking about it now?
The cameramen were all in their places, with their news reporter positioned so the camera was just not showing the king yet. Someone announced, "And we are live in three...two...one..."
The familiar red camera light flickered on and Revali felt himself straighten just a bit more out of instinct as the reporter introduced what was going on. A camera slowly panned towards Mipha and Revali while the reporter spoke on their engagement, before having the camera turn to the king. The king stood to speak, his tall stature practically casting a shadow over the bench.
"Greetings, people of Zora's Domain and those of other kingdoms who may be watching! I am proud to announce the engagement party two days, in honor of celebrating the esteemed Prince Revali of the Rito and my daughter, Princess Mipha's engagement! I am proud to strengthen our alliance with the Rito and I hope this marriage will help our kingdoms stay united for decades to come."
To an outsider, it seemed like Revali was listening but in truth he had completely tuned the king out. He vaguely caught mentions of the party being in two days followed by the wedding in three weeks. The camera turned back to the reporter, who gave a closing and then the red camera lights turned off.
Muzu came marching over. "I hope you two know that your behavior was entirely inappropriate! You both should know that!"
In that moment, Revali decided that he did not like Muzu.
"I'm very sorry, Muzu," Mipha looked genuinely apologetic. "It won't happen again."
Muzu sighed. "Just please keep your composure, Princess Mipha. It is our duty to uphold the standing of the Domain. While I am glad you and Prince Revali are getting along, as the future queen, you must be in control of yourself."
Revali scoffed. "So Zora's Domain is all about false appearances?"
Muzu shot him a poisonous look. "You would do well to apply my warning to yourself too, Prince Revali. After all, you will be our king in three weeks time. Of course, Hylia knows if you will even show, given your track record for irresponsibility."
Mipha gasped. "Muzu!"
Revali's green eyes narrowed at the advisor, who held his gaze. "Is that a challenge?" The Rito prince stood, his expression deadly calm. "If you know so much about me, Muzu, you would know that I will rise to any challenge and I will face any adversity like a man."
Muzu scoffed. "You are merely a boy parading as a leader. You are no man."
"I am more a man than you will ever be."
Revali brushed past the royal advisor, wings flaring on his back as he left the room. He heard Mipha's voice exclaiming something at Muzu, the sounds falling deaf as the grand double doors closed behind Revali.
He stalked down the hallway, pausing for just a moment in front of one of the numerous waterfalls. The running water distorted his reflection and he scoffed. A Rito becoming king of the Zora. As accepting King Dorephan made his people seem, it was clear they were not eager to accept his lead. And why should they? If some Zora prince came and married his sister and became king of the Rito, Revali would be resentful too.
He scoffed. He was never one for forcing women into stereotypes, but this was probably one of the reasons the women were shipped off instead of the men.
"Prince Revali!"
His head snapped up to see Mipha hurrying down the hallway towards him, thankfully alone. His first instinct was to keep walking but...something stopped him.
She came to a halt in front of him, her bun nearly falling out now. "I am so sorry that Muzu said those things to you. It was completely uncalled for and a rather embarrassing show of disrespect. I know he will not apologize so I'm apologizing for him."
Revali brushed it off. "Its fine, Princess. Nothing to worry about. He's not the first to say things like that in my lifetime and he won't be the last. Its just good to know his mindset and I'm sure many share it."
He turned to leave, freezing when he felt fingers graze his wing. "Wait!"
He felt like he was in slow-motion when he turned back to her. She flushed pink and reached into her dress pocket, pulling out a pastry wrapped in a napkin. His eyebrow shot up. "What is this?"
"I--uhm..." She looked away, still holding the pastry out. "I noticed you weren't at breakfast and I figured you'd be hungry..."
Revali felt his expression soften, gently taking the pastry. This woman was sweet and that was making it impossible for him to be angry around her. "Thank you."
Her golden eyes finally looked back at him and she smiled slightly. "You're welcome."
<>
The room was packed with high-ranking people visiting from all regions, the walls buzzing with conversation with music playing in the background. Large parties were something Revali was used to, but this one seemed different. It held the finality of setting the engagement in stone. It threw him off.
He hadn't seen Mipha since the opening speech, which had been nearly an hour ago. It was odd, given she was now by every standard his fiance, but perhaps this was another messed up custom the Zora had.
Muzu hadn't spoken to Revali since the TV airing but he had been giving the prince dirty looks whenever he could. Revali simply ignored him.
Ignored him as best he could, at least.
Although he was glad to have evaded Muzu, he had also barely seen Mipha over those past two days. What causes her absence was not told to him and he figured that perhaps the old advisor had something to do with it. He was sure that it was probably inappropriate to ask on the whereabouts of his soon to-be wife.
But she had sent fish-free breakfasts to his room every day so far. The servant told him.
So now Revali was hovering awkwardly by himself, a glass of champagne in his hand. He was responding appropriately to everyone who came up to greet him, watching them all leave a minute later.
Usually Revali loved being left alone at parties. Now he felt dismally misplaced.
Heels clacked up behind him and he turned, expecting another Lady from one of the various kingdoms. His eyebrow shot up as a familiar magenta-haired princess joined him, dropping into a slight curtsy. "Prince Revali."
"Princess Mipha," he bowed as was required. "I was starting to wonder where you've been. Almost thought you weren't attending."
"Well, it is my own engagement party. It would be rather silly for me not to attend." She smiled, but it seemed subdued.
"Are you alright?"
"Yes, I'm fine."
Revali wasn't convinced. He stepped in front of her, taking in the shimmering silvery-blue dress she wore and the intricate bun her hair was up in. He quickly set his glass down on a nearby table, offering her his hand. "I remember the very first time we met, you said you loved to dance. I assume that's still the case?"
"Well...yes," her eyebrow lifted slowly. "And if I remember correctly, you were a terrible dancer."
"I was five," Revali defended. "And I didn't pay attention in the classes back at then. So," he wiggled his fingers slightly. "Will you dance with me?"
She studied his hand for a long moment before finally slipping her fingers into his. "Alright."
He found himself smiling, leading her over to the dance floor. He was aware of the eyes on them, hearing the whispers of the partygoers. He didn't care what they were saying. His only goal was to get Mipha to smile again.
As they started moving with the music, a look of pleasant surprise crossed Mipha's face and Revali snorted. "I told you I've improved."
"You're have. I was wrong to doubt you." Her eyes seemed to dart about, landing on his face a few times before jumping away. She finally settled for staring at his chest.
This went on for a few minutes until Revali stopped abruptly, causing Mipha to step on his foot. "Ow."
Her eyes snapped up. "I'm sorry!"
"It didn't even hurt," That was a lie. It did a bit. "Look, is what happened still bothering you?"
She pursed her lips and after a long, dragging moment, nodded. "Something like this never would've bothered me before but...Muzu's words have been worming into my mind. I am so acutely aware of my every move and its...awful."
Revali let a slow breath, contemplating. He knew she didn't want to be in this room just by her nervous behavior and evasion of eye contact. He suddenly grabbed her hand, looking earnestly into her gaze, which had settled on him in surprise. "Lets get out of here."
Her eyes widened. "Prince Revali, we can't. The people--"
"To hell with the people!" He leaned forward slightly, holding her hand up. "Who cares what they say? We're people too, royalty or not! Let them talk because they're going to anyway. You shouldn't deny yourself emotions just to uphold some kind of image."
She glanced around and for a moment, Revali was worried he had pushed her too far. Then she looked up at him, golden eyes flashing. "We have to sneak past Muzu. If he sees us leave, we're done for."
Revali smirked. "You happen to be talking to a master escapee. I've snuck out of more parties than I can count."
To his delight, she giggled. "I'm not surprised. How do we do this?"
Revali stretched his neck up, looking over the crowd to find Muzu at the refreshments table, the Royal Advisor's back turned. "We head to that door to our right, into the gardens. The guards won't say anything."
"Are you sure?"
"Trust me."
She gripped his hand a little tighter. "Lead the way."
Revali checked on Muzu's position again before gently pulling her through the crowd towards one of the doors to the gardens. The guards raised eyebrows at them, but as Revali predicted they said nothing and did not try to stop them.
The gardens were very different from most others Revali had seen. This garden was half full of ground plant, scattered around deep, crystal-clear pools of water full of frogs, aquatic plants, and colorful fish. He kept pulling her through until they were a fair distance away from the building, stopping by a luminous stone bench.
Mipha released Revali's hand with a sigh and sat down, looking relieved. Revali opted to stay standing. "Better?"
"Much better," she looked up at him and smiled. "Thank you, Revali."
His eyes widened slightly at her lack of title and then he grinned back. "You're welcome, Mipha."
They fell silent, listening to the rushing waterfalls and faint sound of music from the party. "Revali?"
"Hm."
"What's it like to fly?"
His eyebrow arched up and he thought a moment. "Goddess, Mipha, I don't think there's any way to really explain it. I guess...I guess it like freedom. Knowing you can go wherever you want if you fly far enough and that gravity can't forever bind you to the ground."
She stood, eyes full of curiosity. "How does it work? Do you just take off?"
"I guess. It is a little more complicated than that. Getting off the ground is the hardest part. For most people."
She was clearly studying his wings and for some reason that made him acutely aware of every feather on them. "I say most people cause it can be hard to get enough power to launch straight up from the ground," he felt his pride swell, and couldn't help but strike his favorite pose. "Yet I have created an updraft that allows me to soar. It's considered quite the mastery of aerial techniques, even among the Rito."
"Will you show me?"
Revali thought a moment, mentally checking himself over. The suit he was wearing wasn't optimal but...to hell with it. "Take a step back."
She did, nearly tripping over her shimmering dress. He chuckled. "I said step, not trip."
"Oh hush, you!"
He smirked, flaring his wings out and dropping into a crouch. He pressed the tips of his wings to the ground, steadying himself with his palm flat on the damp grass. He felt the familiar surge of power and a strong wind kicked up around him, rustling the nearby plants and his hair. He pushed off, stretching his wings out and launched straight into the sky.
He heard Mipha's delighted cry and he spun in the middle of the whirlwind, throwing his wings open at the top and hovering there. Looking down, he saw Mipha staring up at him, hair mussed and a smile on her face. Eager to show off, he banked left, swooping around in an arc. With a single powerful flap of his wings, he shot upwards again, swooping down into a dive. Just when it seemed like he was going to face plant on the ground, he spun, landing gracefully on his feet.
Mipha started clapping. "That was incredible!"
He dropped into a bow, looking back up at her with a smile etched on his face. "Well, I know I'm good."
She giggled and he straightened, smiling back. "Thank you for showing me, Revali."
"Don't mention it."
She had a thoughtful look, seemingly studying his every feature. He decided to study her back, looking at the curve of her jaw, the way her hair was strewn about, and the way her eyes looked like orbs of gold.
He finally admitted it to himself. He found her attractive and loved her smile. That would probably explain why he felt the desire to make her smile and laugh whenever he could.
She suddenly blushed and looked away. "We--we should go back to the party."
He didn't look away from her, asking softly, "Is that what you want to do?"
She looked back up at him. "Not really...but we are responsible adults."
Revali couldn't help but snort. "That's questionable."
"Oh, Revali."
"I'm just joking. Come on."
<>
Two weeks flew by faster than Revali could blink. Muzu had noticed their absence at the party, giving them angry looks but saying nothing. In fact, over the two weeks since, Muzu had barely looked at Revali at all, which the prince found relieving.
Mipha and Revali spent time together every day, especially outside. Mipha showed Revali how to paint and convinced him to make a rather dismal painting of a tree. He taught her how to play guitar and she managed to play a disjointed version of the Ballad of the Goddess.
Revali found himself admiring her more every day. She was talented and sweet, and he believed they had become friends. Which was good, he thought, especially with the wedding only a week away.
Sidon had returned from visiting Lady Yona, flying in late the previous night. Revali was supposed to meet him the next morning, but he was greeted by a servant with an odd request. "Princess Mipha requests your presence at Veiled Falls at your earliest convenience."
"Aren't I supposed to meet her brother this morning?" Revali asked. The servant simply shrugged and left.
Unsure of what else to do, Revali headed outside. He located the falls quickly enough, since Mipha had been teaching him the surrounding geography in depth. He launched himself into the sky, startling a nearby guard and he glided easily over. The skies were beautifully clear today, a refreshing breeze carrying him from the east.
He saw Mipha at the bottom of the falls with two guards standing at the top of the falls and one at the bottom with her. She waved when she saw him and he waved back, doing a loop in the sky before bringing himself to land. He hadn't been flying as much lately so every time he could it was like a shot of adrenaline.
He landed in a deep bow, just to show off. "Princess."
She smiled. "Prince Revali. Always so showy."
"Its not just for show, its utilization of skill," he couldn't help but smile fondly at her before eyeing the wetsuit she was wearing. "What are we doing here? aren't we supposed to be meeting with your brother?"
"At lunch. I wanted to bring you here, and show you something." She dropped into the water, swimming gracefully over to a rock protruding from the pond. Taking the initiative, he flew over to the rock.
"Alright, what's going on here, Princess?"
"As I'm sure you well know, the Zora are known for their swimming abilities and how we can climb waterfalls with ease," she held lightly onto the edge of the rock, her magenta ponytail drifting with the current. "I happen to hold one of the fastest times for waterfall climbing. I want to know which of us is faster."
"A race, Princess Mipha?" Revali smirked. "I knew you had that competitive streak in you somewhere."
She shrugged, smiling. "Are you in?"
He adjusted his leather chestplate before he knelt into position. "Of course I am."
"Excellent. Nabho!" She called to the guard. "Will you do a count for us?"
"Of course, Your Highness," Nabho straightened. "On 3...2...1...begin!"
Revali managed to hear Mipha diving into the waterfall over the wind kicked up by his gale. He shot skyward, the wind taking him up higher and higher. He was sure he had Mipha beat--
--but she erupted from the waterfall at the same time he reached its top.
They locked eyes as he went to land on the stone top of the waterfall. She pulled herself into a back flip, feet landing on the very edge.
He hadn't expected her to slip.
One foot went further back than the other and she fell backwards with a shriek. Without even thinking, he lunged after her, the guards giving an alarmed shout. He tucked his wings in close to himself, diving faster than he ever had before and caught up with her, grabbing her and stretching his wings. The sudden increase in weight threw him off, sending him wobbling to the right and with a determined grunt, he straightened himself out.
He was dropping far faster than he wanted and in a desperate attempt to protect her, he curled his body around her, turning backwards. They landed roughly on the rock, Revali hissing as it scraped through his shirt and stripped skin off his back.
They lay there for a second, Mipha breathing hard and Revali wincing. "Mipha, are you--"
"Highness!" Nabho swam over to them, climbing up onto the rock. "Are you alright?"
Mipha carefully sat up slightly, Revali still gripping her. "I'm fine."
Revali slowly sat up with her, cautiously releasing his grip. His green eyes seemed to blaze as he turned to the guard. "Listen here. Had I not been there, your princess would've fallen and smashed open on the rocks. So next time one of you scorns me, keep that in mind."
He ignored the wide-eyed look on the guard's face, turning his attention back to Mipha. "Are you alright?"
"I'm shaken up, but I'm fine. Thanks to you," she swallowed hard, looking him over. "Are you okay? You landed really hard and jumping after me like that must have caused strain."
He said nothing for a moment, staring into her gold eyes. "I'm fine. Trust me, I'm completely fine."
To his surprise, she dropped her head onto his chest and wrapped her arms around him. "Thank you."
Despite the guard standing and staring, Revali lightly rested his cheek on her wet hair, putting his hand on the base of her neck. They sat like that for a long moment before Revali reluctantly let her go and stood, suppressing the grimace of pain from his scraping. It burned.
"Princess Mipha," Nabho breached. "Prince Revali took a rather rough landing and slid somewhat across the stone. Perhaps you should check for injury."
Revali shot the guard a dirty look but Mipha nodded. "Yes. Come on, we should address that before we have to go meet with Sidon. You can fly, I presume?"
"Of course I can," he flared his wings to prove the point. "They didn't even suffer a scratch. Honestly, this isn't the first time I've taken a tumble like that and my back is fine. You are overreacting."
She simply smiled. "Meet me in my room in five minutes."
Without letting him argue, she began walking away. Revali scoffed, watching her retreating back for a moment before launching skyward. He looped overhead once or twice before lazily gliding above, watching Mipha make her way back to the palace. He knew damn well he could easily get there before her but with what had just happened...he didn't want to let her out of his sight.
She disappeared into one of the doors and he swooped alongside the building, finding a door closer to her room. He was standing at her doorway when she arrived. "Took you long enough, Princess."
"Well unlike someone, I had to spend some time walking," with a smile, she unlocked the door and nodded to her guard. "Come on."
Revali hovered at the doorway for a minute before following her in. He had not seen the inside of Mipha's room at all in the time he had been there and for some reason it felt strange to go in now. He shook his head, following her in.
Her room was a reflection of who she was as a person. Everything was organized, with flowing drapes hanging off the windows and numerous paintings on the walls, nearly all of which had her signature. A desk with neatly arranged writing tools was against one wall and a bed with blue sheets was against another. There was two large chairs next to a bookshelf, to which she headed.
"Alright," she gestured to him. "Lift up your shirt so I can see."
He raised an eyebrow and she flushed pink, adding, "The wound. So I can see the wound."
He couldn't help but chuckle and he turned his back to her, removing the leather chestplate and pulling up his shirt. He heard her suck in a breath and then a finger prodded the wound, causing him to flinch. "Okay, give me a second and I'll heal it."
He twisted to look at her. "I'm finally going to get to see these fancy healing powers of yours."
"Well technically you won't see anything because the wound is so far down your back that--"
"Point made."
She snorted, and after a moment of silence, Revali felt...something in the lower part of his back, like a cool breeze. The ache that had started to form diminished and he heard step back. "Done."
He reached down, feeling the skin over. "That's...incredible."
She smiled and shrugged as he turned to face her. "It is something unique I can do. Like how you have your gale."
He stared into her eyes for a very long moment. Mipha, this beautiful, incredible individual, had almost died today. He took in a shaky breath and without thinking, leaned down and pressed his forehead against hers. She made a startled noise but made no effort to move, continuing to look into his eyes. "Revali?"
"Mipha, I..." He closed his eyes. "You are an incredible person. You've been so open and kinda to me, I--"
He didn't know where he was going with this. His breathing hitched when he felt a gentle hand on his face and he opened his eyes again. Mipha smiled. "Revali. I'm glad you are going to be my husband."
He stared at her and without thinking twice about it, he kissed her. It was more akin to brushing his lips against hers before he realized what he was doing and pulled back. She blinked. "Did you just..."
Completely out of his element, he shrugged. "Yeah."
What happened next threw him off. First she giggled and then threw her arms around his neck and kissed him properly. Overwhelmed, his hands found her waist and he kissed her back.
Just when he started relax, he heard a horribly familiar voice screech, "FOR THE LOVE HYLIA!"
They broke apart with a gasp, Revali automatically glaring in the direction of the doorway. Muzu stood there, a look of anger and horror on his face. He tried to speak, producing a lot of gibberish before he finally managed, "Good goddess, you've been here two weeks and aren't even married yet! What is wrong with you?!"
"Hey, Muzu, I have one thing to say to you," Revali's eyes narrowed. "You can suck my--"
"Revali!" Mipha clapped a hand over his mouth. "Don't you dare finish that sentence!"
He rolled his eyes and Muzu sputtered some more before simply turning and leaving, going on about "How outrageous this is" and "I'm too old for this!"
<>
The wedding went down in royal history and was talked about years later. Many of the guests had noticed that, despite only really knowing each other for three weeks, the kiss they shared to finalize their union seemed rather passionate.
It is said that the Royal Advisor Muzu resigned not long after the king and queen's coronation, and went on to live a quiet life working in a local library.
King Revali and Queen Mipha ruled in perfect unity, and anyone who knew them said they were not only deeply in love with each other, but they were best friends too.
They had three children, two boys and one girl. Although the king was extremely proud of his sons, everyone knew he had a soft spot for his daughter.
They stepped down from the throne after their eldest son became old enough to rule and spent time exploring Hyrule together. The king died in a hunting accident at the age of 68 and only two years later, the queen joined him.

I saw that you opened requests and I just HAVE to ask--
Would you write a oneshot about modern Miphvali? 🙏
PS, I still ADORE your writing and keep up the good work!
Ahhh!!! Thank you so much Echo!! I’m so flattered! 😊
Thanks for requesting!! I had so much fun with this one!!!! I was so excited when I saw you requested Modern Miphvali! I definitely want to write more modern oneshots (and regular oneshots) on them in the future! :) This one’s shorter than my other oneshots but I still love it!
Warnings: None! Just some jealousy.
Headcanon: Another reason Revali dislikes Link is because Mipha likes Link
I humanized them in this one (mostly because I wanted to write Mipha with bangs-) i hope that’s okay haha
I hope you like this! :)
————————————————————————————————
01-Jealous Archer (Request)
What does Link have that I don’t?
The question lingered in Revali’s mind as he glared at his cup of coffee with a scrunched nose. The dark haired boy racked his brain for some sort of answer but he came up with nothing. He was captain of the Guardians Archery Team at the University, he was at the top of his class at the pilot academy, and he had various gold medals from archery tournaments. How is it that Link bested him yet again?
The boy barely ever talked anyways so how was Mipha so invested in him?
Revali never cared much for romance, the thought of it just never sparked any interest in him. In high school he was only focused on archery and his pilot classes. And that mindset carried over into his university days. He always thought Mipha was cute, but he never thought anything of it since she adored the blonde boy.
Usually he enjoyed cafe’s and the homely atmosphere they brought with the plants and the coffee bean scent. But today he was with all of his friends. Which meant Mipha was going to be occupied the entire time with the silent blonde.
Revali ran a hand through his dark blue hair, he was so lost in his thoughts he didn’t realize Zelda was in the middle of telling a story.
”….Link ate all of the sandwiches in ten seconds. I was in shock!” Zelda exclaimed with a laugh. Revali blinked, how did they even get to this topic?
A small giggle erupted from Mipha. The sound didn’t make his heart warm like it normally did. No, it made him grit his teeth.
He glanced up from his steamless mug. Mipha’s red hair was pulled back into her classic ponytail, exempt from the side pieces she kept out to frame her face. Her bangs rested just above her golden brown eyes. If he could he would stare into those eyes all day. Not that he’d ever admit that outloud. Like ever.
A sour expression took over his face. Those golden eyes weren’t directed at him. Instead they were locked on Link. To make matters even worse she was smiling at him. With her gentle and sweet smile, Revali’s favorite one of hers.
Why did she have to do that? It made Revali’s stomach swirl with… he didn’t even know how to describe it. He just felt sick… sick and annoyed. Very annoyed. Why couldn’t she look at me like that? What did he do to deserve her smile?
”Link, that's so silly. I can’t believe you did that.” Mipha covered her mouth with a hand as she laughed again.
To Revali’s annoyance, Link gave Mipha a small smile.
”I can, the little guy’s got a stomach.” Daruk scooped up some eggs with his spoon before grasping the ketchup bottle and squirting the red sauce on his spoon. Revali scrunched his nose in distaste.
”True that.” Urbosa held up her mug with a light smirk. “It’s why I make an extra course of food for holiday parties.”
A sheepish smile appeared on Link’s face as he scratched the back of his neck.
“Even that’s not enough sometimes,” Zelda teased, nudging Link in the elbow.
Link let out a small laugh as he shrugged. ”I have an appetite,” he replied quietly.
Mipha perked up. “That reminds me of when we were in our first class at the university…”
Revali wanted to stuff his ears with cotton, that would be the only thing to make this conversation more bearable.
He really didn’t understand how she didn’t see that Link wasn’t interested in her. He and Zelda never stopped stealing glances at one another for Hylia’s sake—it was infuriating to say the least. It was so obvious that both blondes were smitten with each other. Anyone could see it from a mile away. Everyone except for Mipha.
Yet she still liked him.
Revali secretly wished Link and Zelda would get together already so then maybe, just maybe, Mipha would see him right in front of her.
“You’ve barely had any breakfast or your coffee. Are you alright?” Her gentle voice reached his ears and he froze as she placed her hand on his. “You haven’t talked at all.”
”Uh…” Revali’s mind blanked as he stared into her warm eyes. He lost his whole train of thought with just a single touch of her hand. How does she have this power over me?
He let out a cough and pulled his hand away from hers—completely missing her hurt expression. “Yes, yes I’m fine Mipha,” he replied as he sank back into his chair with folded arms. It’s not like I’m fighting for my life over here… why can’t you just see me? Am I not interesting enough? He scolded himself for having such insecure thoughts but he couldn’t help it.
Revali bit his cheek as he stared at the cafe walls. He wondered if maybe he and Mipha weren’t meant to be. I mean they couldn’t be more opposite. He was proud (rightfully so in his opinion) and he made a lot of loud, sarcastic comments. She was kind, humble, and quieter than most.
”Hmmm.” Urbosa smiled at Revali with raised eyebrows.
”What?” He knitted his brow.
“Nothing, it’s just interesting.” The gerudo sipped her coffee.
”What is?” His brow knitted further.
She only smirked.
”What’s going on?” Mipha glanced between him and Urbosa.
”Nothing, I’m heading out.” His chair squeaked against the waxed hardwood flooring as he stood up. “Here’s some rupees for my part of the tip and the check.” He slid a pouch onto the table.
“Oh? Okay. See you later, Revali.” Zelda smiled at him.
“Now?” Mipha asked, turning her full attention toward him.
“I have… things to attend to.” He hated how unsure he sounded.
Mipha squinted her eyes slightly but Revali was quick to turn away and head for the door.
”Rev-“ The door and it’s bell cut off the sound of Mipha’s voice. He winced, feeling bad he didn’t just sit down and talk to her but he really couldn’t do that right now.
————————-
There was a light breeze that rustled the trees in the distance. It was only partially cloudy and the sky was a vibrant blue.
Revali sighed and he turned his attention toward his red target as he readied his bow. He pulled the string backwards. He took a deep breath before letting the nock go and the arrow sailed through the air. Even with the small breeze the arrow hit the middle of his target. Like it always did.
Revali liked archery. He was the best at it and he never missed his targets. It was easy. Easy to focus on, easy to understand, and easy to achieve.
It was a lot less difficult than trying to deal with his emotions and feelings.
”I thought you’d be here.”
His eyes flicked toward Mipha and he slowly lowered his bow. He didn’t know if he should feel excited or afraid for her appearance. He definitely felt both.
The breeze brushed her bangs and his face grew warm, he didn’t think anyone else could pull off bangs as well as she did.
She tilted her head with a slight frown, her golden eyes filling with concern. “Revali? What’s wrong?”
He looked off to the side and sighed. Here we go. “Nothing Mipha. I’m fine.”
”Clearly you aren’t.”
“Yes I am.” He adjusted his glove. “I’m fine. Go back and hang out with him- “ He bit his tongue. “-them.”
Her brows furrowed and she stepped forward. ”Him? You said ’him’.”
Great Hylia of course I had to go and slip up.
“I said them.”
“No you didn’t.” She took another step forward. “Are you talking about Link? You’re talking about Link.”
Revali couldn’t stop a light scoff from taking over his features.
”I don’t understand. Why are you talking about Link?”
“Nothing.” He closed his eyes. “Nothing Miph, just drop it.”
“No!” she snapped.
His gaze whipped to hers.
“Sorry.” She winced, folding her arms. “I’m just upset. I hate when you get like this.”
Revali didn’t say anything, instead he walked over to place his bow on his stand.
“I know you aren’t fine. Whatever you’re feeling you can tell me!”
“Not this.” He shook his head. No way in Hyrule. “I’m afraid this is something I need to keep to myself.”
“Why?”
He turned back to look at her and froze. She was so close.
Mipha was staring up at him with her hands on her hips. Her eyes flicked between his own as if searching for something. Searching for an answer he didn’t want to give.
”Vali.”
“What?” He replied, almost wincing at how weak his voice sounded.
“Why are you talking about Link? You said ‘go hang out with him‘.”
“I-“ He clamped his mouth shut and turned away from her.
Neither of them spoke for a long time.
”Because. I’m…“ His tongue felt too large for his mouth. “…jealous,” he nearly spat out.
“Jealous?”
“Yes. Jealous.” His fists tightened at his sides. “I’m jealous of him because you like him.” His nose scrunched at how childish he sounded.
“I do like him.”
He winced, might as well have shot an arrow through his heart; it would've hurt less.
”But not in the way you’re thinking.”
”Wha-“ The words died in his throat as he felt her arms circle around his waist and felt her head rest on his back. He was definitely dreaming. He had to be.
“Vali. Link’s just a good friend who I enjoy hanging out with. Sure I had a crush on him when we were in middle school but I’m over that now. I’m not interested in him.”
”Oh,” was all Revali said.
Another long silence.
“I think my plan worked,” Mipha finally spoke up.
”What plan?”
“It’s silly… but I sort of. Oh, I feel horrible saying this. But I used Link in a way to make you jealous. Well he doesn’t know it but I focused on him so maybe you would have noticed me or gotten jealous. I think it worked a little too well. It’s so silly I know.”
“I can’t not notice you,” Revali whispered.
”Really?”
Revali’s ears burned. “Really. You didn’t need to go through that whole plan. I already liked you.”
“I had no idea.”
“You didn’t?” He thought he was very obvious.
“What? No, Revali, how could I? You always push me away.”
Do I? His brows furrowed.
“Can you look at me please?” To his dismay, Mipha let go of him. But he obliged to her request and turned to face her. “I wish you’d let me in. I never know what you’re thinking.”
Revali sighed softly. “I’m sorry Miph. I’ll try to be more open with you.”
“I don’t want you to be open with me if you don’t want to. I want you to do it on your own accord.”
“I do want to be open with you,” he confirmed.
“Okay.” She offered a small smile to which he returned.
She took a deep breath before speaking. “I really like you, Vali.” Her tilted her head slightly, her long earrings swaying back and forth with the movement. ”More than friends,” she added, holding his hand between her own.
“I really like you too, Miph.” A grin made its way onto his face—he always smiled more with her around. He felt lighter after saying the words, like he was carrying a heavy weight and it was lifted off of his shoulders.
”Good.” She giggled and his chest warmed. “You’re taking me out on a date.”
“Oh am I now?” He raised a brow.
“Of course you are.” Mipha laced her fingers through his.
Revali laughed through his nose. ”Where did this surge of confidence come from?”
Mipha only grinned and began to lead him away from the range.
”Wait- I need to grab my bow and my stuff.”
”Oh! Oh, yes, of course. I’ll help you.”
Revali smiled at her. “Okay, then we can go on that… date.” He scratched his cheek as his face flushed.
”Sounds like a plan to me.” She returned his smile, her own blush dusting her cheeks.
Short and sweet 😉
EEEEE!! I forgot how much I liked Miphvali! I’m so going to write more fics about them! Hehe!
I hope you enjoyed reading this as much as I did writing it! Maybe I’ll write their date or something 👀

Day 1 - Jealousy
I feel like it's much more in character to have Revali be the jealous one. But it's necessary to think about Mipha's feelings regarding both Link and Zelda. I'm sure it's a complicated feeling for her.

If I add it as a new chapter, then previous readers who subbed can see it & my fic will show up again earlier in search results which equals more people get to see it.
If I add it just within the body of the work, only new readers will know about it if they find my fic through filtering methods.
If I upload it as its own work, new readers can find it, but are less likely to click on it because it won't have any stats, which many readers care about.
Ultimately, I just want to share my stories with as many ppl as possible, but I don't want to clutter the search results or my own works list. What do y'all think? I'm open to suggestions.

It was just because Mipha and Link were both still drunk, Revali knew perfectly well. They’d never suggest such a thing in their right minds. No matter how much Revali had secretly wished…just to be included in their happiness, somehow.
“You can say no, of course,” Mipha added. “You can always say no, but I’d just… Link and I would enjoy doing this with you, as long as you’d like it too.”
This was a horrible idea. Between the soft, open expressions on Link’s and Mipha’s faces and the alcohol still simmering in his bloodstream, Revali felt all-too-fragile. There was no way Revali was walking out of an entanglement with them unscathed.
But. When else would he get such an offer? If he said no now, then that would be that. They’d politely back off, and Revali would have to go to bed tonight and every night for the rest of his life knowing that Link and Mipha had given him a chance, and he’d refused it.
Sure, maybe Mipha and Link could only want him when they were drunk. But it was still being wanted.

War of Hearts
After FIVE MONTHS, I finally updated my modern royalty zelink AU!
You can read it on Wattpad or AO3. Below is a bit of a preview to the new chapter!
<>
"Greetings, Princess Zelda," A man with a strange feathered hat and an atrocious mustache dropped into a low bow before her. "I am Lord Edward Marfice of the Metholina Kingdom. I have traveled far to meet you!"
Zelda plastered a smile on her face as he kissed her hand. "Welcom, Lord Edward. I hope you are enjoying your stay?"
"Of course, of course. They always said Hyrulean hospitality was unrivaled. Would you do me the honors of a dance?"
Zelda would rather parade around naked.
