Tile Art is an informative volume that traces the rich tradition of these sumptuous tiles and fully illustrates their varied designs. The author deals lucidly and extensively with various manufacturing and decorating processes, as well as with the most significant designers and potteries in Britain, on the Continent and in the United States. Dutch Delfware tiles are described in detail, as are Portuguese azulejos, Italian maiolica panels, Scandinavian stove surrounds, British and American Arts and Crafts exemples and French and Ductch Art Nouveau creations. The contributions of artists and designers such as William Morris, Walter Crane, Vanessa Bell and Louis Comfort Tiffany are noted, and the technical advances pioneered by such companies as Mintons, Pilkingtons, Low and Maw are described in relation to the increasing sophistication in tile design during the 19th century.

Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation.
St Giles, Newcastle under Lyme (the one in Staffordshire; not to be confused with Newcastle upon Tyne, because someone will).
The grave at (10) belongs to 72 year old Samuel Mayer, who lived here and died in 1838, which shows that a church was here well before the present church was built in 1873 to a design by George Gilbert Scott who also designed countless buildings sacred and profane including Edinburgh Episcopal Cathedral and London St Pancras Station.
(The tower is older and dates back to the 14th century, making it the oldest surviving building in town unless you count the castle itself, which is recorded as far back as 1149, but of which only a fragment is still here).
The pelican seen in (7) is also older, dating back to 1786, and is striking if somewhat random! The building is Grade II listed. (Please see also the Brampton Museum for more on the town).
The pews all have their own motifs and fine wrought iron work, the original of which is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, and one of which is where the mayor sits at functions (like all Anglican churches, this is also the civic church of the town and serves those who are not regular worshippers or member of the church).
Like nearby Our Lady of the Angels and St Peter in Chains, it is lined with fine Minton tiles; Minton was founded by Thomas Minton in 1793 and became one of the underpinnings of the Potteries, its wares being used around the world including the House of Commons and the US Capitol. (Herbert Minton, son of Thomas, also designed many of the houses which are still among the most sought after in the area).
As a Victorian gothic building it is centred around (3,4) the high altar, designed in 1876 by John Gallimore, and the reredos, which celebrates Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee of 1887.
I was also impressed by the side chapel which is in tribute to the parish men who died in Word War 2 and above it is found the Last Supper.
And he will shew you a large upper room furnished and prepared.

Roc Nation Artist Victory Drops New Single “Just Like In Heaven”
Today, Grammy Award winning Victory drops her new single, “Just Like In Heaven” from her upcoming sophomore album that will be released this spring. The track showcases Victory’s distinct and soulful vocals, bringing the full measure of her talent that blends gospel, blues, folk, pop, and soul musical styles. “Just Like In Heaven” follows the breakout song “El Shaddai” which has more than garnered more than 1.2 M Facebook views. Says Victory: “Who says prayer has to be boring? ‘Just Like in Heaven’ is a prayer inspired by the words of Jesus with a beat inspired by Kanye. I wrote this song with the purpose of making prayer more easily accessible and culturally appealing to the youth of our generation.”
Victory’s first two collections on Roc Nation includes her EP “It’s a New Dawn” (2017), and the critically acclaimed debut album “The Broken Instrument” (2018). Growing up in a family deeply committed to music and live performances, Victory is one of nine siblings who sang in the Boys & Girls Choir of Detroit, an organization founded by her father John Boyd. Taking music seriously as a career from the start, she began singing with the choir at age four, and later studied jazz guitar. When she was 12, the family moved to North Bergen, New Jersey, and they started busking together using various names – including Peace Industry Music Group – at NYC tourist attractions and on subway platforms. The Boyds became particularly renowned for their appearances in the Minton Tile Arcade next to Bethesda Fountain, a spot favored for its great acoustics. Just Like In Heaven - Victory https://youtu.be/jWSn5nd44qg Victory and four of her siblings – older brother Abraham and younger siblings Angel, Israel and Momo — later formed the offshoot group, Infinity’s Song, which rose to national prominence in 2015 after Tori Kelly happened upon them performing UNITED’s “Oceans” one day in Central Park — and joined in. A video of the impromptu performance went viral (1.2M views on YouTube). Also in 2015, Peace Industry Music Group released Infinity’s Song’s self-titled debut album. Victory was then personally signed by Jay-Z to Roc Nation, releasing It’s A New Dawn. The EP featured her beautiful renditions of songs by two of her greatest influences, Nina Simone (“Feeling Good”) and Stevie Wonder (“Overjoyed”). In 2020, Infinity’s Song released their label debut Mad Love. After being the primary lyricist and contributing Christ centered lyrics to Kanye West’s songs “Closed On Sunday” and “God Is,” in 2019, Victory won her first Grammy for her work on the album, “Jesus Is King.” Read the full article

In 1840 Henry Minton revived this art form – and the little triangles and squares and florals of ‘minton’ tiles appeared in fine buildings across the erstwhile British Empire. But clay tiles have the disadvantage of irreparably losing their glaze over the years. The invention of coloured cement in Europe in the late 19th Century introduced the exciting possibilities of encaustic cement floor tiles that could grow more beautiful over the years

How to Restore a Victorian Minton Tiled Floor
I was recently contacted by the owner of this Minton Victorian tiled floor in Kidderminster. The tiles had been covered over with carpet which I suspect was due to some the tiles being missing. Now uncovered it was stained with glue and carpet underlay was still stuck to the tiles in places. The owner was keen to have the floor fully restored including replacing damaged and missing tiles. We can replace missing or damaged tiles however the problem with old Victorian floors is finding matching replacements due to the unique patterns that many have. Fortunately, due to the popularity of Victorian tiles there are several suppliers who sell reproductions and occasionally you can find originals on ebay.
I went over to survey the floor an could see the tiles were certainly in need of some love and care. As part of the visit I carried out a test clean on a patch of the floor and the results were very satisfactory, so the owner asked me to go ahead.
Cleaning/Repairing a Minton Victorian Tiled Hallway Floor
On the day of arrival my first job was to spray the floor with neat Tile Doctor Remove and Go, this is a powerful cleaner/stripper which set to work on removing the glue and carpet underlay, this product will also remove any old sealer. I then left the solution to dwell and worked the chemical in with my buffer and a black pad removing the slurry with a wet and dry vacuum.
The tiles were then treated to an acid wash using Tile Doctor Acid Gel to further clean them and counter any potential efflorescence problem which is a problem with floors of this age that were installed without a damp-proof membrane. The product was scrubbed into the tile and grout, rinsed off with water and then extracted with the wet vacuum.
Once the floor was clean, I checked the colour of the tiles so I could cut and replace the missing section. I had managed to source some tiles that were a close match and set about cutting all the tiles to size and then fitted them using a flexible rapid set adhesive. The newly laid tiles needed to set, and the floor needed to dry out before we could apply the sealer.
Sealing a Minton Victorian Tiled Hallway Floor
The floor was left to dry overnight, on my return in the morning I tested the floor with a damp meter to check the moisture levels and ensure it was dry enough for sealing. I was satisfied it was dry so was able to proceed and seal the floor. Five coats of Tile Doctor Seal and Go Extra were applied which takes a lot of time as you need to wait for the previous coat to dry before applying the next. This product is a semi-gloss breathable sealer which gives a nice sheen to the tiles and fully protects them. It really allowed the colours and detail of the pattern to shine through and being breathable it will cope with any moisture rising though the floor.
The client was very happy with the overall finish and was really pleased that the Victorian tiles were now restored to their original appearance. It a fact that original features like these are in demand and add a lot of value to a property.
