Jalopy is an interesting game and an atmospheric game, but a game that is distinctly not meant for me.

If they did advertise their game on their channel, playing a few games of it as an ad (regardless of quality of the game), would you criticise them for doing so? I suspect you would have an issue with them doing that, in which case they cannot win. Damned if they do, damned if they don't. This is not a criticism of this blog in general.

Well, you're wrong. As long as they point out that they are the ones publishing it and don't edit the video deceptively.

Like, let's say they did cover Landlord's Super. They start the video pointing out that Minskworks is developing the game and publishing it with the Yogscast. Cool. If they failed to do that then people wouldn't realize the Yogscast benefits from sales of the game, logically via referrals from the video. But they announce it, so it's fine.

Or, let's say five minutes into recording they encounter a bug that everyone playing the game will encounter. Like, hypothetically the game makes you try part of the tutorial a dozen times because it can't detect that you're laying bricks correctly. So they edit that out.

And then they reach the in-game store where you can buy items with in-app purchases (the game doesn't have this but it's the ideal example). They spend $200 on fancy house decorations, cut out the purchase, and then show off the house like the items were free.

That kind of editing would be unacceptable, in my opinion. It's one thing to cut a trailer but you don't fake your way through a gameplay demo.

So yeah. No issue with them making a video of their own game but I don't really trust them to do it in a non-bullshit way given all the bullshit options available.

A barely-functional car, a weird uncle in a bad jacket, a quest of self-discovery and seemingly endless machine-exhausting roads between you and your destination. Jalopy is free today, and a messy, unpredictable road-trip worth taking, although you might want to get a move on. Humble are giving away MinskWork’s eastern european driving adventure free for the next two days, with the offer vanishing on Saturday, 6pm BST, or “while supplies last”, which means it could end earlier. Curiously, no Steam key is given by default, but you can claim one for a single US dollar.

My soundtrack to Minskworks' sublime driving/survival game Jalopy - 12 tracks of offbeat, quirky, 70s/80s Eastern Bloc synth-y pop-rock - is now on Steam! (You can also get it on BandCamp if you're not on Steam.) 01 Meinen Laika ("My Laika") My Kraftwerk tribute! Thanks to @vie_kafkaienne for language assistance. 02 Lange Reise ("Long Journey") This track and the next are closest to the original brief - the Drive soundtrack if the music supervisors had been forced to pick all the tunes from late 80s German pop radio. 03 Dresdner Automobilclub ("Dresden Driving Club") 04 Harmonikatalas ("Accordionwave" - Yugoslavia patch). I really like the Balkan accordions on this track - I went to an Albanian wedding around this time and the music was a big inspiration! 05 Krugovi ("Circles" - Yugoslavia patch). 06 Dunaújváros Daytripping (Hungary patch) 07 Let's Go For A Drive (Hungary patch) The vocals on this track make me laugh - it was great to be part of a project that didn't take itself too seriously! 08 Plazhen Tants ("Beach Dance" - Bulgaria patch) Had to have some delightfully naff organs on the soundtrack somewhere. 09 Kalkan (Turkey patch) I've played a few concerts in Istanbul and visited a few other times, and I'd love to go back one day... 10 Balkan Girl I Love You! (Bulgaria patch) The title makes me chuckle. 11 Yuva Hatıraları ("Hearth Memories" - Turkey patch) Writing the songs for the Turkey update made me feel a little sad as I knew they were the last tracks I'd write for Jalopy, hence the vocoder refrain on this track. I also really like the dual synth / slide guitar solo at the end of the track - just off the wall enough. Thanks to Ezgi for help with the title. 12 Anthem Zu Lieben ("Anthem To Love") Written after an interminable afternoon of listening to the German pop charts of 1990 and a suitably OTT way to end the OST. By the way, throughout the process, Greg Pryjmachuk (the developer of Jalopy - graphics, programming and design, the dude is a classic triple threat) was a dream to work with. Only ever the most constructive of criticism, and genius-level work ethic & game-creation skills! Shout-out to lovely publishers Excalibur too.

To be fair, Landlord’s Super looks like this

and appears to have the moment-to-moment thrills of a pet hermit crab. And also apparently has enough bugs to guarantee that a demo longer than 10 minutes would showcase a serious botch.

Minskworks is weirdly cursed, now that I think about it. It’s like their entire MO is to look at who’s making a famous simulator and make an uglier, bleaker version of that game. In 2016 Minskworks’ Jalopy was just My Summer Car but with less features and more sepia. House Flipper was released in 2018, but now you can play Minskwork’s construction simulator Landlord’s Super, now with sepia, and more bleak. And now you can pee, so it’s almost like you’re playing My Summer Car in House Flipper.

Maybe it would make more sense for the Yogscast to publish games that they can actually advertise to their audience, rather than just theme a fucking game of GMod after.
