My Top 10 Fics Of 2023

So, because it is the 'wrapped' time of year where everyone looks back on their year through playlists and other types of stats - I thought that I would look back on my year through something completely nonobjective and based on exactly 0 data - my favourite fics I have written this year that are based completely on my personal enjoyment of them.

Last year, I did something similar to this where I counted down the top ten fics based completely on data - how many notes each fic had gotten on tumblr. But most of the posts were shorter fics that I hadn't spent a lot of time working on that I wasn't very proud of. (Like the fact that my current most popular fanfic on my sideblog for fanfiction is the shortest in word count.) So I have decided to go over the fics that are the most popular in my heart - countdown style.

This year I have written 39 different fics and I have written over 395,000 words, and these are my favourite fics that I have written.

Honorable Mentions:

Black Suit - Emily Prentiss x Fem!Reader (2,900 words). One of the most well-rounded fics I have written in such a short word count. And just - look at her.

My Bleeding Heart - Draco Malfoy x Fem!Reader (3,400 words). I have never used Death Eaters as the basis for angst in a fic and I had so much fun with it. Plus the kidfic fluff at the end was really fun too.

IFHY (I Fucking Hate You) - Abby Anderson x Fem!Reader (8,100 words). So @holy-minseok made a post about how there isn't enough fics with reader characters that aren't nice and sweet and I haven't stopped thinking about it since. Because I have so many fics with rude, toxic readers and this is absolutely one of them. This reader is a Grade A Bitch and that's a huge reason why I had so much fun writing it.

Better Than Sleeping - Jason Todd x Fem!Reader (5,300 words). This is some of the best quality smut I have written this year, hands down.

The Patron Saint of Liars and Fakes - Spencer Reid x Fem!Reader (8,200 words). I love writing fics based on specific episodes of a show, and this definitely helped to fulfil my whump quota for the year.

Sweet Revenge - Ellie Williams x Fem!Reader (16,200 words). This is a fic that definitely converted me from a hardcore Abby girl into an Ellie girl. I am very proud of it. (And eventually I became an EllAbs girl, as god intended.)

Free Use Day - Poly!OG!Titans x Fem!Reader (14,300 words). This is probably my most epic and honorable of the honorable mentions. This is the first time in years that I have written such a long pwp, and it's written about some of my ult favs. So I fucking love it. (It came so, so close to making the top ten.)

10. Dreaming Of You - Gar Logan x Fem!Mute!Reader (31,300 words)

You and Gar have been best friends for a long time. Nothing could disrupt the harmony of such a perfect friendship. Nothing except maybe… your usually predictable powers going haywire and somehow showing you all of his heated daydreams about you. But he couldn’t possibly have romantic feelings for you. He couldn’t possibly want anything more than your close platonic friendship and the occasional steamy fantasy. Right? Gar Logan x Fem!Mute!Powered!Reader. Best Friends to Lovers. Smut and (Slight) Angst. Set during Season 2.

At first I wasn't even sure if I should put this one on the list, because it's technically a re-post, but I was like fuck it, I make the rules here. And the reason it's at 10 is because technically I wrote most of this in 2021 originally (though it feels like longer ago than that omg), but this year I heavily updated the fic, including writing some new scenes for it that flesh it out very nicely. To me, this is everything a good re-post should be. It cleans up what was already there and amazing about the fic and it enhances it so much.

I loved the concept of this fic from its core, and now I get to be so, so proud of the way I have enhanced it years later. To me, this will always be my core Gar fic (as much as I will always write more for him) - and it is something I am truly, genuinely proud of. If you love Gar and you love smutty fantasies involving him, I highly recommend checking this fic out.

9. No Brainer - Derek Cho x Fem!Reader x Melanie Cross (Mayhem (2017)) (7,100 words)

When the ID-7 Virus, aka the Red Eye Virus hits Towers and Smythe Consulting, it throws the entire office building into chaos. With a mandatory quarantine from the CDC in action, that chaos builds in on itself, and somehow, you, Derek, and Melanie get everything that you want. aka You have something Derek and Melanie need. Derek and Melanie have something you want. You all agree to make an exchange, and everyone ends up more than happy. Derek Cho (Steven Yeun) x Fem!Reader x Melanie Cross (Samara Weaving). Co-Works to Lovers. Smut. Based on the film Mayhem from 2017.

This is one of my personal favourite fics of mine that I believe very few people following me have ever read. I absolutely love writing fics based on random one-off horror movies - I have way more in my drafts, and one of my goals for 2024 is to complete and post more of them. But one night I was laying in bed and I randomly watched this film because I knew Steven Yeun was in it. I had seen a lot of clips of him covered in blood and yelling, and I found him really hot in those clips, so I knew that I would enjoy the film. And I absolutely fucking did. Not just based on his hotness, but just - the entire film was so, so enjoyable.

Also, the ID-7 Virus, a fictional sickness that lowers your inhibitions (something that is shown in the film to work like sex pollen) is the perfect basis for a fic. So I literally started writing this on my phone before I had even finished watching the film. And I posted it a few days later. I think it's just pure fun. One of my favourite things to write about is a healthy combination of horror and sex, and this is definitely toeing the line perfectly in my opinion. If you haven't seen the film, I highly recommend it - watch it, and then come back and read this fic.

8. My Heart Is The Worst Kind Of Weapon - Ellie Williams x Fem!Reader (9,600 words)

Ellie confronts your abuser, and after years of torment, you finally feel free. Ellie Williams x Fem!Reader. Strangers to Lovers. Hurt and Comfort.

This is a fic that is very close to my heart. Not only is named after a tragically underrated Fall Out Boy B-Side, one of my favourite songs ever, but it is a fic about conquering the abuse of a family member - and when I wrote this, it was coming from a place of the utmost sincerity.

I am someone who has experienced abuse from a family member, and it felt so entirely empowering to write this - to write about someone coming to your rescue so honestly. Someone rescuing you out of pure want, not because it's an obligation or a burden. But because they are compelled by their own morals and they feel that your abuse is a cruel injustice against the world. This and the companion fic I wrote for Abby with a similar storyline are two of the most important fics that I have written this year.

7. Ghosting - Mike Schmidt x Fem!Reader (3,700 words)

Mike has been in love with you for as long as he can remember. For about as long as the two of you have been best friends. He always thought he would have more time to work up to confessing those big, dangerous feelings for you - until something more dangerous swooped in and stole any time he had left with you. Mike Schmidt x Fem!Reader. Star-Crossed Lovers. Pure Angst. Set during the events of the movie (and features spoilers for the plot).

I feel like this list would be incomplete if I didn't pick at least one of the FNAF fics that I wrote (and two of them ended up on here). With how much it was delayed, it was actually wild to see the FNAF Movie actually come to life before our very eyes, and it was amazing to actually write some fics about it. This is the first time (in a very long time) that I have written pure angst with no sense of fluff at the ending, and it was actually so much fun - it's fun to give into the darker side of a fic, and to write about the most torturous human emotions with absolutely no relief.

Also, I think dying in someone's arms (especially holding your lover or your would-be lover) is such a compelling trope and I loved writing about it. This was so much fun for me to write, and it was something so interesting to explore aside from the usual smut that I write.

6. From Your Lips - Jennifer Jareau x GN!Reader (3,000 words)

After JJ is attacked by dogs on the Hankle farm, everyone is busy worrying about Reid’s missing status, but you take the time to check on JJ and try your best to calm her flustered mind. Jennifer Jareau x Gender Neutral Reader. Friends with Benefits. Smut and Angst. Set during Season 2, Episode 15.

This year, I had another large foray into the Criminal Minds fandom, and I wrote a JJ fic for the first time. And just in general, I am so proud of this fic. I think even for a short fic, it has such a great essence - again, I love setting fics during specific episodes, and I found it so fun to play around with the religious imagery and the religious themes already in this episode, as well as the imagery of rabid dogs.

To me, this is what truly makes fanfiction great - taking details of the canon, chewing them up like bubblegum and then adding something else in to make them your own. I had so much fun writing this fic, 10/10.

5. Love From The Other Side (aka The Golf Club Fic) - Abby Anderson x Fem!Reader (5,600 words)

Abby kills the man that has been haunting your nightmares for years. You find it only fitting to give her a proper reward. Abby Anderson x Fem!Reader. Established Relationship. Smut. Set during The Last of Us Part II. (aka - the fic where Abby fucks the reader's pussy with the golf club that she used to kill Joel.)

So, as you will notice with this fic and the next one, 2023 was the year I truly said fuck it. There used to be a time when I was afraid to admit my weirder kinks and fantasies (like, I used to be afraid to even say that I read A/B/O), but then I realized that this is the freak-nasty website. And way too many people are shy. So I must be the one to provide the freak-nasty fics.

This is a fic I had in mind since the very first time I watched TLOU2 gameplay. And originally, it was going to be a simple, purely pornopraphic fic about Abby fucking the reader with the golf club - but as I was writing it, it turned into something that I find oddly beautiful. And (again, just like with the next fic) I find that writing about kinks in long-term relationships, especially the kind of relationships that have come to be co-dependent - it's like writing this toxic, cathartic poetry.

It's writing about two people who need each other but can be so horrible for each other - and it is one of my favourite things to write about because it's so damn interesting. This was a slay, and generally awesome because it was getting out an idea that's been in my head for years.

4. Damn The Man, Save The Empire - Vanessa Shelly x GN!Reader (6,100 words)

Vanessa has always taken care of you. Since the two of you were kids, she has put her neck on the line for you, and you rarely knew how to return that epic kindness. One night, while both of you are raw and on-edge, the dark cloud of your strange past looming over both of you nearly swallows both of you whole - and once again, Vanessa is right there, taking care of you. (Dark)Dom!Vanessa Shelly x Sub!Gender Neutral Reader. Toxic Co-Dependent Relationship. Smut and Angst. Takes place before the main timeline of the film (features spoilers for the movie).

Again, like I said with the previous fic - this was one of my favourite fics to write because it is so delightfully unhinged. I really enjoy exploring toxic relationships through fiction because - for one, writing healthy, functioning relationships is not always interesting. And there is something so beautifully dark and poetic about writing two people who have grown into each other like twisted tree branches and need each other, but are so bad for each other.

And this year I have been exploring gender neutral smut a lot more. I used to always write fem reader smut as my default, but I have been having a lot of fun with the creativity of writing smut without describing the reader's body in detail. I love coming up with metaphors and describing around the body parts. I find it to be a fun creative challenge. Anyway - this was a lot of fun to write, and I highly recommend it if you enjoy reading darker fics.

3. Lessons For A Genius (Lesson One) - Spencer Reid x Fem!Reader (17,200 words)

What could a certified genius possibly have to learn from someone like you? Turns out - a hell of a lot.  And the real ‘teaching’ started when your graphic explanations of slang toward Spencer for the sheer shock value of it turned into something a lot more… hands on.  Sub!Spencer Reid x (BAU)Dom!Fem!Reader. Co-Workers to Friends with Benefits. Smut. Set during early Season 2.

I feel like it would be a miss to make this list without mentioning a fic that I obsessed over for two weeks straight - a fic that drove me insane in the best way. Of course, there is also the sequel, but I personally prefer the first lesson. This fic has been brewing in my mind for a very long time, because it is painfully obvious to me that Spencer (in the early seasons) is an awkward virgin, and I have always wanted to ruin him.

This fic is a lot of my fantasies brought to life, and I feel like it's a really masterful painting of those fantasies - for once, without overly focusing on the murder mystery aspect of Criminal Minds fanfiction (which I have a tendency to get distracted by). I am really, really proud of this fic, and I know you guys enjoyed it. It is definitely a highlight of my writing this year.

2. Emergency Contact - Jason Todd x GN!Reader (10,500 words)

After Jason miraculously comes home from his brush with Deathstroke, you’re both feeling it in very different ways. You have an unexpected physical wound from the battle, and he has many (very expected) emotional wounds. You help each other heal. Even if it’s very stubborn on both your parts. Jason Todd x GN!Powered!Reader. Enemies/FWB to Lovers. Angst and Hurt/Comfort. (Slight Smut). Set during Season 2, Episode 5.

This is a fic I have talked about a lot recently, because I have been working on the sequel. (I was hoping to get the sequel finished and posted before the end of December, but it's gonna be a longer fic, so it's looking like it's gonna be one of the first fics of January instead.) Anyway - to me, this is by far one of my best fics and one of my most important fics of 2023. This was battling for the top spot.

But even if it's second place, I am so incredibly proud of this fic. I think it's beautifully written, I am incredibly proud of the literary references I worked in with The Great Gatsby - especially because I feel like Jason would be the type to read Gatsby and compare himself to someone tragic and doomed like Gatsby (he would soo compare himself to Gatsby, especially because he was also a poor kid who was randomly sponsored by a rich man who saw potential in him). Overall, I just had a very distinct vision when writing the fic, and that vision came to life. And I really, really hope that my vision comes to life in the sequel too.

1. King For A Day - Poly!Golden Trio x Fem!Reader (22,400 words) 

You have always had a special relationship with Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, and the one and only Harry Potter. When you set out to help them find and destroy Lord Voldemort’s Horcruxes, it seems that your intimate knowledge of them is the one thing keeping them together - until the unique dynamic shifts, thanks to one of those pesky pieces of dark magic. Angry voices carry, and it turns out - moans of pleasure do too. Poly!Golden Trio x Fem!Reader (Fem!Reader x Harry Potter x Ron Weasley x Hermione Granger). FWB to Poly Lovers. Smut (with a slight bit of Angst). Set during Deathly Hallows.

And finally, we get to my favourite fic of the year!!

So, I'm gonna be honest, a huge reason that this fic gets the top slot is because of my nostalgia for Harry Potter. This year was the first time in a long time that I have written Harry Potter fanfiction, and it felt like a reawakening of my soul. I was genuinely happy, and I was spending time enjoying concepts and characters that I have not thought about for a long time.

This fic in particular, I feel like I have been working on it for years in my mind. This fic is a culmination of all my thoughts about these characters, all my time in the Harry Potter fandom, and generally, I am so, so proud of it. I am proud that my love for Harry Potter has come to fruition in this form - a poly smut fic, something that is just so me.

Overall - I had such a great year chasing fic ideas that make me happy, despite the popularity of the characters or the fandoms, and I encourage you guys to spend 2024 doing the same. Cheers!

[Tales from the Pack] Jeonghan: Sold (Part Two)

Summary: If Jooyeon and Baekhyun never went snooping around the black market, they would’ve never discovered the human trafficking ring and wanted to help. They would’ve never discovered you inside one of the many cages full of people, and Jeonghan would’ve never went against the alphas and demanded they help. But for you, Jeonghan would do anything, even if it means bringing back trouble from a past he never knew about.

Despite her insistence, Jooyeon was forced to stay home. Wonwoo led the way to where the tent was spotted, guiding the four alphas and Jeonghan, who wanted to see what this trafficking ring was all about. It was sad, obviously, but something about hearing about the whole debacle was…interesting, for lack of a better word. He wanted to see it all for himself – especially because he didn’t want to get involved in this if he didn’t have to so he wanted some say in what to do next. 

It was near the black market that the pack met up with Junmyeon, Kyungsoo, and Minseok who were led by Baekhyun to the odd tent in the back of the market. They all knew the place wasn’t actually known as ‘the black market’ because Capitol guards would’ve shut the place down quickly. But it was obvious that there was illegal activity that went on, along with the few booths that offered legal things to keep it somewhat covered. But those booths were shady, offering guns and weapons, and even a butcher who sold mystery meats that even Seungcheol couldn’t sniff out.

“I hate everything about this place…” Minseok muttered as he looked the tent over.

Everyone else had to agree. Not just the sight and the scents were off putting, but just the overall energy they got from the place. Actually, the entire vicinity made their hair stand on end and gave them goosebumps. So far, it wasn’t looking like any of them wanted to step in.

“The tear was over here,” Baekhyun whispered, waving the group to follow him. 

Baekhyun walked around to the south-west side of the tent, and when he saw the tear him and Jooyeon had discovered, he stepped to the side and motioned for his alpha to take a look. Junmyeon looked at him with tight lips and furrowed brows before he glanced back at the tear and stepped forward, cautiously putting his fingertips to the material to get a better look inside. Almost immediately they all noticed how Junmyeon stiffened and the hair on the back of his neck stood up. A few seconds later, he stood back.

He took a moment before clearing his throat and saying, “I think this is above what we can handle.”

“Is it really that bad?” Kyungsoo asked.

“There’s so many cages…” Junmyeon breathed, eyes wide like he saw war behind those tarps, slowly shaking his head as a hand carded through his hair. “So many people… There’s gotta be a big team behind this, and I’m not sure we could free all these people unscathed.”

Soonyoung, being as curious as he was, muttered, “I gotta see,” before stepping up to where Junmyeon had looked in.

Sure enough, he saw it all. All the cages filled with too many people for them to all sleep comfortably. They laid in piles on top of each other in torn, dirty clothing. They all wore collars around their necks with tiny black boxes on them. 

The group suddenly heard a harsh whisper. It sounded female with a thick accent, and they couldn’t tell where they were from, but the language was familiar.

Kyung and Soonyoung knew what she had said, though. But Soonyoung, startled from the voice, jumped back, and Kyung stepped up to look through the hole.

“I can see you.”

Kyung's golden eye searched around, trying to find the source of the whisper, but she couldn’t see who it was.

“What are you?” she whispered again. 

She sounded Irish.

Kyung ignored her question, asking, “Is there a way in?”

“In?” Junmyeon repeated. “You want to go in there?”

“They're always guarding us,” she replied. “There’s no way in or out.”

Kyung stepped back from the hole and sighed, “They’re guarded. I assume they're in the front.”

After observing the tent, they noticed the barbed wire on the top laced with wolfsbane, and they were sure lifting the tarp from the bottom would reveal more traps. They weren’t sure why they were trying to keep out even werewolves, but it made it all the more difficult to get in and that much more intriguing a situation. Simply just tearing through the tarp would be too obvious, and they knew they couldn’t free them all tonight. 

“Who were you talking to?” Seungcheol asked.

“Somebody who’s being held in there, I guess,” she shrugged. “I want to talk to her properly, so we need to get in.”

“Can do,” Soonyoung stated before he momentarily closed his eyes. 

When they opened, they had glowed to life. After another moment, he mumbled, “Around front.”

Seungcheol led the way to the front of the tent where a man – now possessed by Soonyoung – was standing guard. Jihoon kept a hold on Soonyoung’s arm to lead him along. Seungcheol pulled the tarp back and stepped inside, looking around.

“Oh my god…” he said under his breath in disbelief of the amount of captives they held.

Sure, it wasn’t in the hundreds, but it was still a staggering amount. And they were getting away with this. Nothing was being done about this. All these men and women being held prisoner in cages to be sold to who knows what kinds of people. It sent a shiver down his spine. It made his skin crawl.

“Over here,” the whisper came again, and all their heads turned to a cage in the far left corner.

Kyung slid past the older alpha and swiftly walked toward the cage where a girl with strawberry blonde hair was standing up near the bars. She had freckles on her tan skin, skittering along her nose, cheeks, and up her forehead. Her hazel eyes scanned over all of the wolves as they followed along behind Kyung, taking in all the smells as their eyes widened, all senses on high alert. Somehow, the girl didn’t seem afraid. 

“You guys aren’t like the men who watch us,” she noted, her thick accent almost a little difficult for Kyung to understand as she hadn’t really heard it much other than one trip to Ireland with her parents as a kid. “Your eyes are…something…not…human.”

“You’re right,” Kyung confirmed, “we’re not. What’s your name?”

“Saoirse.”

“I’m Kyung, and these are my friends,” she gestured to the group of men behind her. Some awkwardly waved or nodded their heads while others were too distracted and began nosing around the area. Soonyoung still stood concentrated on keeping the man outside under control. “Can you tell me what all this is? Do you know who took you?”

Saoirse scoffed, “Yeah, we’re being sold to a pack of werewolves to eat us or something.”

Kyung’s eyes widened as she immediately turned to look at the group. Her eyes met Junmyeon’s first, then found Seungcheol’s and Jihoon’s. Those looking around – they had, in fact, found that if they tried to enter from another angle, the ground was littered with bear traps – halted immediately and looked right toward the cage in the corner.

“Eat?” Junmyeon asked.

She shrugged, “It’s what I assume. I don’t know what they’d want with a bunch of humans. I'm not even supposed to know that, but I overheard them talking one night.”

They were being sold to a pack who collected mates. They were all sure of it, but they weren’t going to explain that to Saoirse, of course.

And with that answer, their odds of saving anybody in that place were looking worse and worse.

Kyung looked back to her, “Why are you the only one awake right now?” she asked, trying to change the subject.

“We mostly just sleep all day, anyway,” she explained, gesturing to the people laying in her cage, some softly snoring – others loudly or just silent. “They keep us just on the brink of starvation so we’ll always be tired and less likely to put up a fight. It’s how they keep us controlled and contained.

She smirked slightly, “But I learned a trick. If we get too close to the bars, our collars go off. Keeps me up. Unless they sedate us, then nobody can stay awake.”

“What do you mean your collars go off?”

“They’re shock collars.”

Honestly, Kyung didn’t know why she was continuing to ask questions. It was clear even the two packs combined couldn’t break this trafficking ring, and the more information she learned, the worse she felt throwing them to the wolves – literally. 

Meanwhile, Jeonghan was walking around slowly, examining each cage and counting the people in them. Wonwoo walked just slightly behind him, mumbling about how horrible humans could be to each other.

“Selling out your own kind to werewolves,” he scoffed. “Pathetic.”

“Some people will do anything for some money,” Jeonghan noted. “Even some were–”

He stopped dead in his tracks. They were just rounding the corner of the small walkway between cages, his eyes on the cage beside Saoirse’s. The only sliver of blue in the cage catching his eye and leading him to find the only reason to even think about going through with this rescue mission. No, not think about it. He would do it, even if he had to do it alone.

“Kyung,” his voice was urgent as he jogged over to the female alpha, pushing past Junmyeon and Seungcheol to put his hand on her shoulder. The way he gripped it and slightly dug his fingernails into her t-shirt made her nervous, thinking he’d seen something. The urgency in his eyes turned her blood to ice. “Kyung, tell her we’ll get them out.”

Her worry turned to confusion, and so did everyone else.

“What?” Seungcheol demanded.

He turned to the alphas, his intense expression now pleading, “We have to. If none of you will help me, I’ll do it myself. I don’t care.”

It sunk in and Jihoon’s eyes closed as he let out a soft groan. Seungcheol looked absolutely defeated as he let out a soft, “No…”

“Jeonghan, these people belong to another pack,” Baekhyun told him. “They’re other wolves’ mates.”

His eyes spotted red at his words, looking at the older wolf menacingly, “Not while I’m alive.”

“This isn’t a fight we can win,” Kyungsoo stated.

“What?” Saoirse asked, watching the packs fight back and forth. “What’s happening?”

Kyung listened to everyone argue against Jeonghan, but she knew it wasn’t his fault, and she knew he wasn’t bluffing when he said he would do it alone if he had to. If it were anyone else, they’d do the same. She couldn’t just stand by and let Jeonghan’s mate be sold off to a life of abuse and toxicity. She couldn’t let his mate be taken away from him.

She looked back at Saoirse and promised, “We’re gonna try to get you guys out of here, okay?”

Saoirse’s grimy face started to crack a smile. Her dull hazel eyes seemed to show a glimmer of hope now, “Really? H-how? How are you gonna manage that?”

Kyung gave her a small, carefully reaching between the bars to take Saoirse’s hand and give it a squeeze, “Don’t worry about that. Let us handle that. Just hang on a little while longer for me.”

HELLO MY DEAR ROANOAKS, ALWAYS LOVELY TO SEE YOU IN MY INBOX <33

YES!! Barula and Pich are characters that @rainboopz and I have, in her setting of "The Sea King's Mermaid"! It's an Asian fantasy set unda da sea 🎶 and she's actually going to be publishing a website on it soon so everyone can learn more about the world and lore!! 👀

But for Bich specifically, these two have become just. two of our favorite bastards. And bastards they are-- irredeemable, absolute, bastards.

Barula is General of the North Sea, and Pich is General of the West Sea. Illicit affairs with your enemy? Oh my. It's more of an "enemies with benefits" situation going on, but they're also pretty friendly when their seas aren't actively at each other's throats (and even sometimes when they are lmAO). They swap notes on interrogation techniques, boast about victories, gossip like a pair of old grannies, and in general make themselves a pain in everyone else's asses.

Neither of the other Generals really like them-- of course Barula hates Chihaya, considering they're a shark, though their general demeanor and personality grates on his nerves as well. He did manage to take one of their teeth after an unfortunate… accident… led to Chihaya going into a blood frenzy-- which Barula was quick to put an end to, and he sure as shit never lets anyone forget that he bested a crazed shark General.

On the flip side, he doesn't mind Minseok… but he is salty that he's never bested the guy in any of their spars. He's General of the South, which Barula mostly considers a joke since all they really do is party. How the hell does a leafy seeahorse of all things, from the happy-go-lucky kingdom of all places, defeat him? General of the North, the most battle-hungry and warmongering kingdom in the seas, infamous even in his own right for being one of the most formidable warriors in the history of the four kingdoms. What the fuck!!

We haven't done as much on the Advisors of the four seas, but the North Sea Advisor, Hoaxuan, is also mine and they Do Not Get Along. But Hoaxuan doesn't get along with anyone in the North. (Wonder why...)

As you could probably tell, Barula is mine, so I can talk for him about hoouuuuurs. He's a striped dolphin with a hate-on for sharks, he's way smarter than anyone assumes from such a brute, and he shamelessly takes advantage of the privilege and authority afforded to him by his position. He worked damn fucking hard to reach the top, and like hell he isn't going to enjoy it to the absolute limit. His Emperor couldn't give less of a fuck either; Ganbold is a temperamental, stubborn, self-righteous old lung that, if anything, encourages Barula's abuses of power-- so long as it serves to strengthen the North (or at least its image). I mean, the Emperor himself doesn't seem to care much for doing shit by the book, so why the hell would Barula? (They're a hell of a pair tbh, enabling back and forth lmAO.) However, their closer relationship doesn't mean Barula is blind to Ganbold's flaws, and even he gets fed up with those divine temper tantrums. But part of his job is shutting up and obeying, and he doesn't really care about the motivations behind being sicced on someone by his Emperor, hehehe.

if you could bring back one styling that you think wasn't appreciated in its time or the fans weren't ready for (but are now) or just think should be around again, which would it be? (hard round: something other than TVXQ's "Triangle" styling) (and I already know the #1 is Pink Gumby)

(kicks rock) ok FINE i won't immediately say triangle.........

my first instinct is actually something that DID get its due appreciation: arario!! it was genuinely ahead of its time (both in styling and musical composition), and if vixx hadn't done shangri-la we might never have seen a traditional/hanbok styling trend in kpop. but realistically this is kind of a tough question to answer because most trends in kpop styling have been recycled already in some way. i could say something like we should bring back the goofy looks for the early '10s but realistically that's already happened as much as it's going to without completely reverting silhouettes and clothing construction, which is not going to happen. and also i don't think most of those looks were underappreciated at the time. the most frequent type of look that is oft derided by fans and underutilized by creative staff are the infrequent forays into science fiction concepts. songs like 100%'s beat and more famously vixx's error were quite controversial for no legitimate reason, although honestly i don't remember how beat was received since vixx overshadowed them significantly (justice for 100% actually. the beat styling is better), but considering nobody remembers 100% even existed i'll consider it underappreciated. tbh in the current styling landscape of kpop my beef is less with fans not appreciating a styling (bc fans know exactly jack shit about costuming and will accept anything, even obvious garbage) and more with stylists who are unwilling to actually flesh out a concept. this applies to pretty much everything but i see it most obviously in scifi (and fantasy/horror etc, anything that's not boy/girl next door or school) concepts. one of the few cbs that i do desperately want to have a go around again is obsession bc please god can i finally have ksoo and minseok on the song, but also it's a fantastic concept that got most of the way there, it just could have been so much more interesting out if the stylists weren't cowards.

‘9 families, 9 people, 9 different personalities and 9 different powers yet they were one?’

A statement or like an unanswered question or thought that arose in everyone’s mind when they first heard about their families’ background but it didn’t matter when they saw their bond. The ‘Academia of Powers’ the university held its title and its reputation to the sky because the name did its justice for it was home to one of the finest power holders.

I know what you are thinking, is it like Harry Potter or X-Men? Not exactly, the academy is not just a place where people come and learn more about their powers and its potential but to supernatural creatures and those who were left abandoned by their families or were orphans. The humans who lived there learned about how to help the ones who had powers but were highly intelligent, their brains had a beautiful hold on the tasks and so did their hands and legs.

Anyways, we were talking about the 9 gentlemen right? The 9 fine gentlemen have their own story so to how they have reached the place they are and currently they are popularly known as the 9 gems for they have helped not only the university but others well.

At the university-

“Call the boys!!” a fine aged man said as his fingers skillfully and quickly were typing something on the laptop. The person nodded and dashed off the room and a few minutes later, a chatter was heard just outside the dean’s office before someone hushed everyone followed by a faint knock on the door.

“Sir, we may come in?” a husky voice said politely to which he got a reply of yes.

The young men entered the dean’s office, some had a scared look while the others were chill.

“Good morning, youngmen! Hope you are doing well. Mr Ooh and Mr Kim, why do you both seem nervous? Is there something going on?”

The two boys exchanged glances before speaking in unison, “Oh no sir. Thank you for your concern. It's just that we have an exam in 2 hours, so we are a bit nervous.” and bowed politely.

“Well exams are part and parcel but till the time you give your best shot. It only matters, yeah? Good Luck!! Anyways, we have an event coming up or should I say two most important competitions that challenges not only our reputation but our pride and potential as well, especially the 9 of you as the competition is organised by our fellow rivals and your most favourite nemesis, ‘The magic souls’ group. They have personally sent this invite and the dean of that university called me. So, this is our chance boys” The dean explained the whole competition and its structure and the rules that follow behind.

“But most importantly, your safety should be of utmost priority as we know the foul past that follows behind them of harming others. Mr Zhang, it would be a great opportunity for you to not only use your powers to heal others but to make the enemies taste their own medicine. ”

The boy with surname Zhang mischievously smiled as he had his plan ready and now he got the perfect opportunity

The boys nodded and spoke about their plans when they heard a loud thunder. “The weather seemed fine. How could be so-

“Sir, its Jongdae’s power. He might be helping the local farmers with the help of our hyung Minseok. That’s why there are seven of us.” Lay said to which the dean nodded. “You may leave now”

As the boys were about to leave, Baekhyun spoke “Sir, there is something you should be worried about. Do you remember the two halls you just got renovated and are outside the campus? It got destroyed” he said and sent a few videos and evidence while they quietly went away.

“Why did you do that?” Sehun asked. “You will see the effect during the competition with Magic Souls.” Kyungsoo said with a smirk as he understood the motive making Suho and Lay laugh.

Bonus: I remember you said your favourite member is Chen.. so, here is a mood board..

Hello! This is a bit of a late response considering I read the 3 new chapters on the day you released them but I’ve been super busy and wanted to fully compliment them rather than respond in a rushed manner. I was actually on a college residential trip in Germany but dropped everything to read the new chapters, I was so excited and it did not disappoint! So here comes my stupidly long list of thoughts that no one asked for but I’m giving to you anyway because I am hyper fixated on this fanfic-

As a Hwa bias, chapter 10 was cruel, but in the best way possible. The way their alpha x alpha relationship is similar to that of wlw or mlm one in real life is so painful but such a smart metaphor. My situation is in fact very similar to his, being queer but financially dependant on my parents, so this definitely hit home. I hope the best for our Sanhwa but I love the subtle representation this dynamic is providing for us. The fact that neither of them let Wooyoung in on it because they want to protect him from the truth, are you trying to break my heart?! I can’t wait to see what you’ve got in store for them in future chapters. Mingi admitting fault is my favourite thing ever. I hate the trope of the main love interest being as close to perfection as one can be, Yungi having flaws humanises them so much and adds a whole lot of depth to their characters, making the story itself so much more interesting. But I’m also so happy that we are back into Yungi x Y/n fluffy era.

Chapter 11 was the prefect breath of air between 2 very angsty chapters. I literally love Wooyoungs character so much and getting to see him happy made me feel all giddy inside. Also love that Yeosang and Jongho are more included in this chapter. I hope we get to see Woosangs relationship develop more in future, they're such as cool side couple and deserve the best. The way Minseoks character slowly became more prevalent created great foreshadowing to the threat he would become, it’s paced so well and is such an enjoyable sense of anticipation.

And chapter 12. Oh chapter 12. Alike to chapter 10, I like the way that it represents trauma while being in a fictional and fantasy context. It gives the opportunity of being able to empathise with such an experience as it acts for a metaphor of traumatising experiences many of us have have in real life without directly describing it. And my god is it described well. I feel so much rage towards this fictional character, its not even funny. Once again Wooyo and Y/ns omega friendship that non of the others will ever be able to understand is so heart-warming and the way that Yungi and Woosanhwa put their differences aside when the person they love most was in danger. But also…wdym Hwa was sat with his head in his bloody hands?! I need to know! I didn’t even stop to think about the guys perspective because I was so invested in how Y/n perceived it but that teaser you dropped has made me so hungry for it. It’ll add weight to this climatic portion of the plot and so much depth to characters as were able to see how such an awful situation will influence their rational.

Once again Chai you have blown me away and allowed me to enjoy reading in a way I never believed I could. I’ll continue rereading these amazing chapters until the next update. Much love,

oh my goodness thank you SO much for this comment. i've read it a couple of times now, and i just really appreciate that chapter ten resonated with you. it took a while to figure out that dynamic with san and hwa, but i'm really happy with how it came together.

You settled your bags by the front door, taking a step back to admire the shabby exterior of your new home that you just bought. The previous owner had just given you a quick tour and let you know of any immediate fixes you needed to get done so the house was liveable. He was suspicious of you at first, claiming that you seemed "Too young to live on your own, especially out here, smack in the middle of nowhere," and while he was right, you weren't going to fumble your peace so you simply lied.

"I'm older than I look," you fibbed through a tight smile, internally cringing at yourself. Your new home was surrounded by acres of green fields that probably went on for miles, the feeling of the cold breeze running through your hair combined with a beautiful clear sky, and warmth of the sun was enough to make you cry.

Finally, after so long, a soft smile made its way to your normally stoic expression. You were content. 

The man who sold you your new home was long gone now, it was just you & Sarah, she is the one who took the day off to drive you all the way out here. The drive here was longer than your cab ride to the motel. The nearest location of civilisation was miles away, none you could easily reach, but that's what you wanted.

You heard her hop through the long grass to get next to you, her eyes studied your expression, making her smile. With a kind hand on your shoulder she asked, "So this is it huh?" there was a faint hint of sadness in her voice.

Even though you both haven't known each other that long, you both grew fond of each other quite quickly, she wasn't that much older than you, you told yourself you wouldn't share your heart with anyone else ever again, but the time you shared with Sarah broke that self-made promise. "Before I left the city, I left a really long note for my mom" you started, confiding in her one last time, "And in it I said that my number one fantasy is to go somewhere random and just disappear forever, no one from my old life would see me ever again... and now it's no longer a fantasy, for once, I'm getting what I wanted for a really long time. Although, it does pain me to leave you," your voice got quiet, tears threatening to spill, you didn't need to say another word for Sarah to pull you into a tight, loving, and warm embrace.

You both pulled away, arms hanging loosely around one another, "I'll write to you," you choked out, earning a laugh, "It's not the 1600s anymore, call me." She dug into her pocket for a piece of paper, it her was number, shoving it into your hands, "Well, I guess this is a good enough reason to not rip out the landline." You giggled out. There was another moment of silence between the two of you before you pulled one another into one final embrace.

"I'll see you soon, Y/N."
