Let's talk about Spacetoons Mineta...
Tumblr media
Spacetoons is an arabic channel that semi-recently dubbed MHA. Some may call it "Arabic 4kids," but as someone who watched a substantial amount of shows in a 4Kids dub. (namely SonicX), that's not a fair comparison. The only 4 kids dub I actually enjoyed was that of "Kirby: Right back at ya"
Anyway, the BokuNometaAcademia sub brought to my attention the way that Mineta is written here. I have always hated how Hori used Mineta to live out his weird fantasies. The inclusion of Mineta's "comedy" turned a lot of people, me included off and honestly, why wouldn't it.
Spacetoons is more child-tuned so they did a lot of censorship, for example, look what they did to Momo
Tumblr media
(They also greatly improved her character)
You may be asking, "What did they do with Mineta?" Valid question considering 70% of his character is horny jokes. Well, the completely removed the perv aspect and made him a loveable kid who wants to fight his insecurities and be great hero.....
Tumblr media
I have always said it, Mineta holds some great potential. His moment during the USJ arc was a great stepping stone for some great character growth. The idea of a coward pushing to become a true hero is so different from the norm, but as we know, when it comes to MHA, potential don' get used.
From what I hear from spacetooneta, he is actually really likeable. He is so different from Canoneta that people mistaken him for a girl. The scenes where he is being pervy are either edited out completely or altered convincingly.
Tumblr media
They changed the scene from season 3's filler episode so that the context is as follows:
Kaminari and Mineta want to goof off at the pool
Mineta has overheard that the girls have booked the pool too
They convince Izuku to come w/them so that they can get there before the girls
Izuku invites Tenya and the others and Tenya makes them train instead of goofing off
The girls are here, goofing off while they have to train
The most nuts part is that viewers of that dub absolutely LOVE HIM. He suprassed Bakugou in popularity even. This shows that Hori could have made one of the most loveable characters in Shounen. Think about it, his design is already cute, just slap a cute personality on and everyone would love him. But no, he had to be a creepy perv.
Canon Mineta sucks man

What are your thoughts on Aizawa?
Personally I feel like his character as a whole was ruined in his first scene during the quirk assessment test by going back on his word to make it a “logical ruse”, targeting Midoriya over his quirk (something I always felt would be tied to class since self destructive quirks aren’t easily trained, especially if you don’t have the funds to own/regularly visit large tracts of private property with easy access to health care. Though UA’s high number of legacy hero’s and high entrance bar means they probably expect somewhat pre-trained kids), and above all keeping on Mineta (someone who constantly disrupts class and leads to an unsafe environment for the female students, limiting how much they’ll learn).
But I’m hella bias and most of that was tied to his first appearance, so I would love to hear your take on his character as a whole
I think almost everything interesting about him was written by Hideyuki Furuhashi, the author of the Vigilantes spinoff. Seriously. That's where Aizawa's backstory is and where Aizawa's characterization is the most consistent. Vigilantes Aizawa deserves the hype he gets.
Aizawa in the main BNHA manga is no favorite of mine. Many of my issues with Aizawa are problems with the narrative generally and the dissonance between how he is described versus his actions.
Aizawa at his core is a guy with a lot of trauma who projects that trauma onto his students. His favor is based on who he thinks is most likely to survive. In that context, on paper it makes sense why he would favor Bakugou and ignore Mineta's everything. Early Bakugou was skilled and didn't take risks that could cause him harm because he was a fundamentally selfish person. Mineta was a coward and not a fool so he was unlikely to die a hero's death.
Aizawa being heavily traumatized itself isn't necessarily a problem; that's some crunchy characterization right there. The problem is that the narrative tries to portray him as the concept of rationality itself in contrast to Izuku/All Might's idealism. That doesn't really work when the origin of Aizawa's attitude also comes from an inherently irrational place.
Also, the story often uses him as a mouthpiece to directly explain to the audience what they should take away from scenes. It particularly stands out when Aizawa is presenting information he has no reason to know or information that should not be new information worth commenting on. (His lines about Shouto during his fight with Bakugou in the Sports Festival is an example of the former and most of his lines during the Provisional Licensing Exam are examples of the latter).
The other issue is that after introducing these two contrasting characterizations of Aizawa as rationality itself and Aizawa as the hero who never got past the horrors he faced as a hero student, a third Aizawa who contradicted both of the prior ones was introduced: Aizawa the doting teacher, Dadzawa. And it just doesn't work with the rest of his character. It might have worked if it was something that developed over time after he was given the task of caring for Eri. But this doting teacher characterization was introduced before that without much explanation. It also feels jarring because this story is largely from Izuku's point of view where Aizawa is largely portrayed as a hostile obstacle to Izuku rather than a teacher concerned for his growth and wellbeing.

ngl im a mineta defender until the end, now before you jump me let me explain
his behavior is obvi disgusting (lets also not ignore the fact that hori has said hes his self insert) BUT IT IS EXTREMELY EASY TO FIX!
a lot of kids and teens who have similar behaviors often have parents with the same beliefs. not to say that this is always the case but it’s more common than not
which means that they’re raised not knowing that their behavior is wrong. they see it as acceptable, and not only that, but *expected* of them
it is an extremely easy thing to rectify. of course sometimes it’s harder depending on how much the behavior has been ingrained into them, but at the end of the day it is *fixable*
he was failed by his parents for encouraging his behavior and he was failed by other adults/teachers for letting it continue
also it’s not that much of a stretch to say that he was probably heavily bullied. he has a very prominent lisp, he’s a heteromorph, and he’s extremely short. i’ve seen several ppl who hc that he has dwarfism and i definitely agree with that
aizawa doesn’t seem to give a shit because he never takes any action to try and discipline him for how he acts
also im sick of the shinso replacing mineta fics. the only good thing abt shinso replacing aoyama is that ppl don’t have an excuse to replace him.
like for the love of god it’s not that hard to simply change his character. it annoys me to no end. bc i like mineta a lot! his quirk is interesting and he has a lot of potential as a character but he’s reduced to a creepy pervert bc every shonen anime needs to have at least one 🙄
tl;dr stop bashing mineta and start bashing hori
Hi @the-jello-bowl 👋
Stop bashing Mineta and start bashing Hori... hmm. You know what? That's a sentiment I could get behind.
After all, the ultimate problem with Mineta lies in his writing.
At the start of the series, Hori wrote him too perverted with too little of any other redeeming or sympathetic quality. That impression stuck - so a lot of fans want him out of heroism and out of 1A.
This is fair because Mineta's behaviour is triggering for many people, and he could make a dangerous figure as a hero and an adult if left unchecked and if his perversions worsen.
While I understand why, Shinsou replacing Mineta is a lazy way to do take Mineta out of 1A, since Shinsou canonically hasn't shown he deserves to be in the hero class nor shown to have good interactions with 1A as a collective.
While it doesn't make his behaviour excusable, you are right when you say Mineta was failed by the adults around him. Especially his parents and Aizawa, as you pointed out, they were the ones prime positioned to fix this behaviour, yet they did not. We don't know what his parents are like for certain, but I believe his dad was likely a verbally and emotionally abusive misogynist who Mineta idolised. And we know that Aizawa fluctuates between negligence and using his hero grade weapon on Mineta as discipline... so there is no consistent messaging there. Yikes.
Instead, Hori implied Mina had to clockwork orange Mineta to stop him being a pervert which... took away Mineta's whole agency in his decision to stop being perverted. (Did his character even get better at all by his own freewill really if Mina had to do this? Will that 'brainwashing' break one day? Here is another reason to hate Hori's writing.)
Hori also doesn't expand on the things that could make Mineta sympathetic, the lisp, the possibly being bullied in the past, the likely self-confidence issues. He doesn't expand on Mineta's backstory or expand on why he wants to be a hero, really (if it was just girls, he would have quit by now, let's be real).
It is a failure in Hori's writing that he doesnt give Mineta (as a HERO student) a redemption arc where he realises just how awful he's been to the girls and vows to make up for it. This moment could have even begun because Mineta stops his perversions due to wanting to be more well-liked and like Midoriya (who he looks up to). The building blocks are there - Hori neglects them.
TLDR: Mineta is a character that could have had potential, and his quirk is interesting. He had potential for a character redemption arc, potential for an interesting backstory, too.
The reason why Mineta is hated is because Hori wastes all his potential to have a lazily written creepy pervert throughout the majority of the story.
Good traits such as Mineta's bravery only make a large appearance later, and the perversions disappear too late in the story to really salvage his popularity.
Not only that, but being a hero is a privilege, not a right. Mineta has got to show through the story as a member of 1A why he deserves to be there and why he has the character for Heroism - unfortunately Hori fails to do this for him because of the reasons I mentioned above.
A lazily written cowardly perverted character could have worked in a minor villain character, but this is instead in a member of 1A, who we are meant to root for adding to the cognitive dissonance of his character.

I'm also planning my rewrite, but I'm really thinking about doing a different story, I'm really thinking about discarding Shinsou and Mineta, for these reasons. Mineta, because I don't want to write his character and I think he only exists to be a gag character and I also don't have any sympathy for him. As for Shinsou, I stopped liking him due to fandom, since every story I saw that he was in, always placed him as a poor guy or who had a worse life than Izuku, plus I could focus on other characters over the issue of discrimination. What do you think about this? It's a good idea?
I agree about Mineta. I'm not getting rid of him solely because it feels cheap to just brush him off, but his actions are going to be dealt with and after that he won't be very present. Mineta, I feel, exists only for Horikoshi to perv on his underage characters and it makes me hate him more than I initially would have.
Like, you can have a pervert character and still make them likable. Look at Sanji from One Piece. He's a pervert and he's still a popular character. And before anyone says, "iT's bEcAuSE hE'S hOt" look at Brook. He's a literal skeleton and people still love him. Mineta being a pervert was never the problem, him solely existing as a pervert and putting the underaged characters in awful situations is the problem.
As for Shinsou, I'm keeping him only because I think he had potential as a character. I'm not fond of him, but I don't hate him either so he can stay

With Aoyama, I understand why he would want to leave given everything however since he's not a real person but a character in a story - Hori's choice to write him out of 1A and not Mineta or Bkg is poor.
Bkg I don't trust not to put himself or others in danger due to his own ego, anger issues, and excessive use of his very dangerous quirk. The main thing he contributed to this war is DYING then being brought back in a b.s way.
Mineta seems to have grown out of his cowardice and perversions now, but that doesn't change how his repeated perverted behaviour should have gotten him disciplined then booted out of UA long ago.
To add on to this, Shinsou hasn't been seen enough to be shown to deserve the hero course, certainly not above Aoyama who has done more than enough to show that he belongs in 1A.
I found out that they gave Aoyama's place to Shinsou. How did they give him Aoyama's place when Mineta was right there? Or, I don't know, a certain student who should have been expelled on the first day of school for attacking his classmate or on the second day of school for disobeying a direct order from the teacher and almost killing the student he attacked the day before. Just saying, but between a kid being forced to pay for the sins of his parents and a serial sexual harasser and someone with a history of aggression as well as suicide-baiting, they chose very poorly.

Saw your post about Mineta and I just wanna say a fun fact: Mineta in that same drama cd novel (where Bkg had a weird comment about Kirishima in a dress) brought up the possibility that Deku may be bi. He wasn’t trying to be homophobic or anything at all. Just simply pointing out a possibility that Deku might not be meeting up with a girl.
Tumblr media
So yeah. I hate homophobic Mineta (I might be biased in favor of him bcs I made my blog about him). And many would bring up the scene where he was supposedly calling Bakugou gay when he was fighting Uraraka. But tbh, I lean more towards the sadist interpretation because another guy only criticized Bakugou for “toying” with Uraraka and I thought Mineta is just adding a sexual interpretation of the situation because he’s a pervert!
Tumblr media
Btw this isn’t meant to be anti Bakugou. Just wanna throw this around. I don’t think I hate Bakugou so much as I used to. More of I just hate how the fandom has such a crazy, shojo-fied interpretation of him.
Agreed with all of this. None of these scenes hint at Minoru being homophobic at all

I find it odd how irrelevant the perv thing is in Mineta's character. Like it makes up so much of his screentime in earlier chapters yet Hori is able to completely remove it in later arcs and it doesn't even feel jarring.
The way I see it, Hori uses Mineta as an excuse to write fanservic-y scenes, and honestly, that's not a good look on his character. It really hinders the exploration possible for other aspects of his character. For example, his admiration of Izuku could actually be a really touching subplot or his conflictions in terms of whether he should be at UA or not giving his overly cowardly attitude during the USJ.
But Hori rather use him for his "humour" (Immensly creepy moments) to satisfy his own desires, and that's no good.

Looks like I'm about one third of the way through my reread of the manga at this point.
So to commemorate that, here are the current character post rankings:
Izuku Midoriya: 373 posts
Katsuki Bakugou: 157 posts
All Might: 149 posts
Shouto Todoroki: 129 posts
All for One: 94 posts
Tomura Shigaraki: 84 posts
Tenya Iida: 64 posts
Ochako Uraraka and Endeavor: 46 posts each
Eraserhead: 39 posts
Eijirou Kirishima: 36 posts
Himiko Toga: 33 posts
Sir Nighteye and Mirio Togata: 29 posts each
Touya Todoroki: 26 posts
Yuuga Aoyama: 24 posts
Momo Yaoyorozu and the Hero Killer Stain: 22 posts each
Overhaul: 17 posts
Inko Midoriya, Tamaki Amajiki, and Yoichi Shigaraki (despite not being formally introduced yet): 16 posts each
Nana Shimura: 15 posts (despite getting more panel time than Yoichi)
Nedzu: 12 posts
Minoru Mineta: 11 posts
Gran Torino, Naomasa Tsukauchi, and Yoarashi Inasa: 10 posts each
Mina Ashido, Kota Izumi, and Hawks (despite not being introduced yet): 9 posts each
Rei Todoroki, Eri, Twice, and Mei Hatsume: 8 posts each
Fumikage Tokoyami, Tsuyu Asui, and Kudou (despite not being introduced yet): 7 posts each
Magne, Spinner, and Hitoshi Shinsou: 6 posts each
The 5 post club: Tetsutetsu Tetsutetsu, Mezou Shouji, Itsuka Kendo, Denki Kaminari, Thirteen, Tensei Iida, and Larceny and his pals who fought Suneater
The 4 post brigade: Nejire Hado, Mr. Compress, Present Mic, Recovery Girl
Shoutout to Satou and Kouda for being so irrelevant despite being in the special plot important class that I have written nothing about them after rereading one third of the manga. Jirou, Ojiro, Hagakure, and Sero were on thin ice with less than four posts each...
Miscellaneous Commentary:
This included posts tagged with each character's name. Reblogs weren't counted but asks were included. Just Bakugou critical tagged posts were counted towards Bakugou's numbers.
I don't see the top three changing. Izuku is the protagonist despite how he was neglected in later arcs by the manga. All Might remains important and Bakugou is the deuteragonist despite his ineffectiveness in that role.
Shouto will probably keep the fourth spot until act three and then fall rapidly because that was when Horikoshi dropped the ball on his character. Ochako will fall in the rankings until the third act where she'll make a comeback. Somehow, after the first act, it seems that Horikoshi could only handle writing Shouto or Ochako but not both at once.
There's no way Iida remains in the top ten despite how much I like his character. Kirishima isn't going to overtake him though either.
Endeavor is going to fly past Ochako. He is so messy he caused the entire Todoroki Family Subplot, so there's a lot to talk about with that messy bitch.
Touya's position between Mirio and Aoyama is sending me, but to be fair the plot sidelined him early on to smack everyone in the face with the reveal in the first war arc.
Momo sharing the same amount of plot relevance with Stain is killing me, and honestly I think they'll probably continue to be around the same place going forward.
Nedzu and Mineta having more posts than Hawks is also sending me, but Hawks hasn't had his introduction yet.
I'll probably do another one of these around the halfway point in my reread for the fun of it.

Hey, I'm going to try something out and I hope it works. I really wanna see what y'all come up with and create! I'm going to post fic prompts/ideas/au/hcs (whatever you wanna call them lol) bc I have so many ideas but barely any are being written. And even if they are I usually unpublish/unpost them pretty quickly bc I get anxious– sooo let's see how long this stays up lmao (PS I'm not that experienced with Tumblr so bare with me :/) most of these are mha or bnha bc I'm hyperfixated on it. I also have something like this posted on Wattpad under the same name. But not on AO3 bc I saw someone say that you're not supposed to post writing prompts on there or something idk lol
Without further ado....
Fic Idea Dump Rules
This is just for fun, so don't be rude when criticizing an idea or at all lol
Multiple people can take an idea idc, I am going to write some of these too lol
I would still like credit for the idea but more importantly I just want to be able to read the stories that come from my ideas. So, please send me links or whatever!
All info/hcs in the notes for the idea is optional. You do not have to use every bit of info if you don't want to. Hell, you can even combine and mash different ideas together
mineta minoru (I'm used to censoring his name...) always gets expelled eventually. That is one piece of info that needs to be in all MHA fics. It should happen in canon tbh. But if you can write it well than I'll settle for redemption lmao
Also DNA suits for Hagakure Tooru and Yaoyorozu Momo. They need protection! How do you expect someone to fight crime– NAKED?!! (There are so many characters that I think need them ngl– like Power Loader)
I also might have covers or art that I made that you can use. Definitely not for every idea and I won't make any if there isn't some already made
If there are already fics out there like these that you have read please tell me, I would love to read them!
I hope you all will be able to understand my word vomit notes. But if you have questions I'll try to answer!

LOVE IT.
I have a few things for some of the other less important 1A classmates.
Shouji: As shown in canon (way too late lmfao), Shouji is quite often framed as frightening by others due to his Xtra arms. His class objects this view and shows him respect and care. Mineta in particular felt guilty for previously making fun of him for it. We can erase the mutant discrimination, sure but that does not mean Shouji's insecurities have to go too. He is also very quiet
Kyoka: Best friends with Momo, her story in canon is actually solid and does not need much changing lol. Feeling conflicted in terms of separating her hero work and her music. She and Denki are potentially frenemies but really care about one another.
Momo: Deals with self-worth issues and is essentially a mother figure for most of the class. Due to her insanely OP quirk, she tends to doubt herself but grows to use her power to her full potential (well close enough ig). BFFs(or love interest if you like) with Jirou who really helps her boost her confidence
Mineta: Joins UA to become popular but nearly drops out after the USJ attack However, he is shown by Tsu that if he is willing to give up this easily, then he is not cut out to be a hero. Admiring Izuku, he reforms his will and gains bravery overtime. He also learns how his quirk works so well due to being paired with a planner like him and how brute force does not work with him. Tsu and Denki are his two best friends and he is no longer a pervert so yay :D (Screw canon Mineta I swear)
Tsu: Perfect student both academically and combat-related but has hidden insecurities she keeps from most people. Best friends with Ochako and Mineta's emotional support agent who keeps him in check. She is also super emotional but tries to hide it from people who look up to her.
Koda: Due to his quirk, he spent most of his childhood alone talking with animals so he did not make any major friends once joining UA. However, after his teamup with Kyoka in the final exam, she ends up becoming his best friend and he gradually builds up the confidence to talk with the rest of his classmates casually.
Fumikage: Love this guy, he's so chill. He is good friends with Koda since he admires his silence and him and DarkShadow are like brothers stuck together. I actually think his character is one of the few that was somewhat done justice in canon.
COMPLETEY FORGOT ABOUT KAMANARI
His story is one of independence, once he learns that Jirou and Minet are attending UA, he follows along for the sake of not being alone. His motive of helping his friends, particularly Mineta and especially Jirou helps him gain an independent goal
Another thing, u remember Mustard from the camp arc? Yeah he seems to hold a lot of potential as a foil for any other member of class 1A, so he does not get captured, only Moonfish and Muscular do.
Also I agree, the stupid traitor plot was garbo and dumb as fukk
any y'all got anything for Sato, Sero, Ojiro or Hagakure? This is actually really hard.
Since we are removing Bakugou, excluding Izuku we have 18 characters worth exploring. So even at the bare minimum, we need to explore them ALL. Canon has done nothing with characters like Ojiro and Sato.
Before introducing a million random characters and giving them more screentime, focusing on the students first seems ideal
In an ideal world, Mha's main cast would look something like:
Izuku, the protagonist: Treated well by narrative, actually develops and learns to be both stand up for himself and trust people. He still gets OFA but his quirkless past isn't forgotten because the concept of him going from powerless to powerful is interesting
Shouto, the deuteragonist: Starts the same as canon but never gets sideline by Endeavor in his own plot, actually gets focus on who he wants to be as a person and his connections to his friends, he's also one of the biggest critics of the current hero system. Shouto also learns that he shouldn't risk his own well-being and mental health to save a family that's already beyond repair (He could also be Izuku's love interest because... it just works)
Ochaco, the triagonist: Izuku's BFF who gets tons of screentime and development and is actually powerful. She wants to be the hero who saves other heroes just like in canon and calls out how the celebrity culture of heroes has negativelly affected the mental health of those in the profession (none of the bullshit with Toga happens)
Tenya: Izuku's main rival, they're still friends but they butt heads often and through that they actually help eachother grow and realize their flaws.
Eijirou: Shouto's self-proclaimed best friend who approaches him as the start because he thinks Shouto looks lonely. He's the one who starts melting the walls Shouto has put up before Izuku completely crashes through them in the sports fes. Backstory remains the same as canon.
Mina: Shouto's rival, who disliked him at first because of how he treated others initially. Higly skilled with her quirk and actually on par with Shouto when it comes to quirk proficiency and combat. After the sports fes, she and Shouto become friends but are still very competitive with eachother.
Yuga: One of Izuku's first friends after entering U.A along with Tenya and Ochaco. Actually quirkless, the belt is just a support item but he keeps it a secret. Eventually tells Izuku the truth and they both confide in eachother with Izuku also telling him about OFA (Not the traitor anymore because that plot point is just terrible)
Any thoughts?
I love all of this!
Izuku gets the positive attention he deserves.
His friends not sidelined.
Actual themes and plot points get explored instead of being used as flavor text.
A gay ship I actually love.
And my boy Aoyama doesn't get screwed over!
One thing I will add is hopefully Bakugou got expelled after the battle trials since that's where it would make sense to get rid of him after he literally attempted murder.

It's pretty creepy that Horikoshi keeps doing fan service of female characters. Yes, I know BNHA is for younger pre-teen/teen boys but like... the man himself is, what, 30s? 40s? drawing skimpy outfits on young high schoolers 😬
A lot of mangakas are openly perverted, but the MHA girls are so young-looking that it feels extra creepy somehow. It gets even worse when you remember he said that Mineta was the character most like him. That's one of the main reasons why I hate Mineta because he just feels like a self-insert for Horikoshi to live out his perversions on his underage characters

I say this as a Mineta fan myself, but the main reason I dislike the “Shinsou replaces Mineta” (which would later lead me to criticize Shinsou more) tag is because majority of the time, Bakugou is still there and gets away with his crap scot free. Why is it hard to hold both Bkg and Mineta accountable? I’m not trying to compare their atrocities, but both are still clearly wrong in what they do and they should be expelled. Ik a lot of the times, schools do keep these kinds of assholes because “they show potential” or to not ruin the reputation of the school, but I have never seen a fanfic use this as part of their story at all.
Agreed. Both have committed terrible crimes yet only Minoru’s ever punished despite him showing that he can be a decent human being from time to time.
