I grew up in the suburbs of Denver, on the outer edge of the metro area. One of my school field trips as a kid was to just… go to Denver for a day. That’s how isolated we were in our little culdesacs—most of us had never been into the city. We had learned about cities the same way we had learned math: as abstract concepts and processes whose reality we couldn’t quite grasp. And, our first exposure to a city was to one that literally bulldozed or paved over almost every good thing about it from 1930-1976 in favor of wider streets for cars, parking lots, and corporate offices.

So, I get how hard it can be for many folks in North America to see the benefit of living in cities. We often don’t see them as places people actually live. At best, they’re just places for skyscrapers and stadiums. Maybe a trendy bar or two. And, to the extent we view them as places people live, it’s colored by the history of “white flight” and the absurd amount of racist and classist rhetoric telling suburbanites they should fear other people, cities, mass transit, etc.
But I am so glad to have broken out of that trap—so glad to have been able to experience cities as living, thriving places. Every time I’ve moved as an adult, it’s been to a denser area. And every time, it’s been like peeling back layers of learned anti-social behaviors to discover what it’s like to actually be part of a community.
Today, I biked 6 blocks to a local co-op grocery store. As I paid for my groceries, the cashier noticed a group of kids from a local child care center walking to a park across the street. We talked about how cute they were, and about how nice it is that the kids can walk to multiple playgrounds in the span of a few blocks—a fact that would have seemed absurd to me as a kid growing up in the suburbs.
Then, I loaded up my groceries and rode home.

Senator Allan Spear Enjoys a Bike Ride
Senator Allan Spear (1937-2008) was the first openly gay man in the United States to serve as a state legislator. He was elected to the Minnesota Senate in 1972 and served for nearly 30 years, including a decade as President of the Senate. He was instrumental in including LGBT Minnesotans in the 1993 Human Rights Act, ensuring protection from discrimination in education, employment, housing, and more to the LGBT community.
Get out and enjoy a bike ride, like Allan! May is National Bike Month and Minneapolis Bike Month. Find more local bike history in our Tumblr Archive.

Literally every problem people have with cities no matter how petty is something that can be fixed in one way or another
Too much Grey? Paint the buildings
Not enough nature? Street trees and pocket parks are easy to install
Light Pollution? Cover street lamps and use energy efficient bulbs to power them
Too much Concrete? Brick Sidewalks are easy to install and require fewer repairs, additionally infill on parking lots significantly reduces the amount of concrete and creates usable space
High Rents? Land use reform and loosening of zoning restrictions was proven to work in Minneapolis
Too many people? The parks provide a calm escape from urban life and there are usually less trafficked parts of cities
Too noisy? Traffic Calming measures are incredibly effective in reducing sounds
Lack of Food availability? Build a community Garden
Crime? Stop over policing low income communities
Hard to get around and have bad traffic? Metros exist for a reason
Urban heat island effect? Plant some trees and build bike lanes to reduce car usage
Obviously none of these can instantly solve people's problems and these aren't the only solutions to these problems. But the point of this is just to show how our cities problems no matter how minor can be fixed or at least improved

It's been a while since I walked around one of the Minneapolis lakes. This afternoon I went around Lake Harriet.
Mostly I stayed on the path. Part of the time I walked on the ice.
Tumblr media
Several people were ice fishing and had shelters. One of them told me the ice was about 8" thick. That's plenty safe for walking and biking (there is a bicycle next to that fish house below).

A view of the concession stand and band shell - from the lake.

Swim at your own risk:
Tumblr media
Rules for swimming. I felt there were too many restrictions. I kept my clothes, boots and parka on and didn't jump in.
Tumblr media
Cracks in the ice. Sometimes on a quiet night it's really cool to hear lake ice cracking. It's still safe to be there though.
Tumblr media
A sad little tree had Christmas ornaments on it.

It felt good to get out and walk today.

In the Twin Cities for the weekend. Saw Dorian Electra and St. Vincent Thursday night (fucking bad ass). Went on a bike ride with the boys that ended up being miserable b/c our rented bikes had only three speeds to choose from and downtown Minneapolis bike routes were hella hilly. Then, after recovering from that miserable experience (got a good workout though), went shopping and now it's time to hit up the hotel's hot tub and pool.
