I’m Saying It

The Despicable Me series would've been far better if it focused on Gru & his newfound relationship with his daughters. The 1st film works so well because of that development, it's why I still love it in spite of the Minionmania running wild afterward. The girls were important characters in the first movie, and the sequel just up and trashes that importance.

They should've kept at Gru being a villain with the girls having an interest in his scheming. The 2nd films sucks because they split Gru's new family into not only having menial subplots, but gives us a love interest that hardly has a presence. Gave us some Disney Channel shit when the premise was right there.

To put this into perspective, this released long before Heinz Doofenshmirtz was more recognized as father of the year in Phineas & Ferb. We got a whole film where Doofenshmirtz learns to become a father first, supervillain second, and it worked not because of the minions or the sitcom-y presence, but the meaningfulness that came with Gru learning this and growing to create a family better than the one he had.

SUPER VILLAIN DAD. And we could've gotten Gru raising three mischievous schemers but comes to understand that there's a limit to it, that they're still young, impressionable, & deserve to live as children but is nonetheless joyous at their passion. 

The 3rd film would've been the good time to introduce the love interest as both the potential mom & the change in Gru's life that he needed; coming in conflict with the girls who like the idea of getting a mom but came to like Gru's old life. Make THEM involved in Gru's life.

There was potential but NOOO. Noodle ass sitcom dickshit that tells you jack about both the girls & their relationship with Gru. They might as well be purse puppies post the 1st film cuz their subplots amount to just existing while Gru has the more meatier plot. I mean they had something with the middle child being the more wildcard but no, she has as much a presence as that specific minion they pushed in the 3rd film. I know you’re probably wondering by what I mean by that, and that’s my point. 

Everything post the 1st film is the equivalent to Shrek the 3rd, where the push for comedy & sitcom-y shit got in the damn way of what could've been meaningful familial development. I hate when this happens & that it happened to what is a favorite film of mine.
