Should minimum wage be a living wage?
Is the federal minimum wage supposed to be a living wage?
  There keeps being a debate on the internet as to whether the federal minimum wage is supposed to be a living wage.
 Some are stating that the minimum wage is not designed to support someone just provide them with a bare minimum wage for their labors.
 Others are arguing that the minimum wage is supposed to provide a particular standard of living and not just be the lowest that an employer can get away with paying.
 The answer to the question is, like all things human, complex and has both right and wrong.
 To begin with, it is necessary to look at the history of the creation of the minimum wage law.
  This law was created not under a law known as the minimum wage law.
 It was created as a law known as the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938. So this law is not a new law. It is over 80 years old.
 You can read about the history of making the law at the following link from the official web site of the United States Department of Labor :

 As you can see there were great difficulties and oppression to the law. But the law was finally passed and a minimum wage was established.
  The next observation is “was the minimum wage supposed to be a living wage?”
 The answer according to the law library of Cornell University (one of the top law universities in the United States) is yes. Per this link to their website:

 If one goes to the summary section on the Fair Labor Standards act you can read the following sentence:
 “The minimum wage was designed to create a minimum standard of living to protect the health and well-being of employees.”
 So yes, the minimum wage was designed to be a living wage.
 However, the important questions to ask are
 “What are the criteria for what items were considered necessary to meet the definition of the minimum standard of living when the act was created and how are those criteria different today?”
 And
 “If there is a difference how should that difference be addressed?”
 There are both questions that are in-depth and complex and best looked into another time.
