Corpse Bride AU time! It was kind of inevitable, really.

If you haven't seen the film and are planning on it er spoiler warning for the plot? lmao

Miner MacCarrick is a young man from an aristocratic family who have gone bankrupt. Archie Baines is the oldest child of a local family who recently acquired some wealth, so despite having never met, the two families arrange their marriage to give the MacCarrick's some money and the Baines some status. Things go badly at the wedding rehearsal when Archie proves to be a bumbling idiot /lh and he runs away from the chaos he causes to practise his vows in the forest - which he does perfectly, except he slips the ring onto a tree branch that in fact turns out to be some dead guy. A skeletal groom rises from the ground and takes Archie down to the underworld.

Here Archie meets Skelly, another young man who was murdered on his wedding night by a mysterious stranger, and who vowed to wait until someone proposed to him to set him free from his vow and claims the two of them are now married. Archie's like 'what the fuck' and tries to trick Skelly into taking him back to the living world (and Miner) but is discovered to have tricked him and taken back down. Skelly laments over this and feeling bad, Archie starts to bond (look I didn't wanna draw a piano so we move past that scene /lh)

Meanwhile, convinced Archie has simply run away, Miner's parents marry him off to a seemingly wealthy newcomer; Lord Explorer Magellan. Archie receives word of this in the underworld at the same time Skelly is informed that his 'marriage' is not legal - vows are only valid until 'death do you part', which he already has. In order to make the union official, Archie will need to repeat his wedding vows in the living world and then drink poison. Skelly explains he can't ask Archie to do that, but Archie volunteers to do so willingly.

Miner and Archie are almost reunited when Explorer interrupts them - and is revealed to have been Skelly's murderer (again, AU wise only)

Also Pal shows up during this confrontation bcuz I don't know where else to put him. And Timber beacause.

And as for the ending? Well. I left that more blank >:) Movie ending or something totally different? You pick

miner and archaeologist just for funzies

A cute pairing that I wouldn’t mind adding to the list, very slow burn mutual pining… they’re patient guys who deal in the earth, they’re in no rush… archeologist in my verse is a very handsome older fella, and it’s easy to see how like… a quiet friendship that starts with exchanged info on dig sites and help with excavation ends up turning into a mutual crush ~ the sweetest, freshest gems that miner would usually either save to have set into jewellery or tools for trading, suddenly he’s picking the best out, putting them aside to gift Archie just because they make his eyes light up, because hes so fascinated to hear where miner dug them up. Because miner knows Archie has set each aside and labelled them just as neat as he does any artifacts he digs up… because sometimes on cold nights, when theyre sat around the communal bonfire in the middle of town, Archie will sit next to him and quietly tell him about stories hes found of long dead people- of lovers, and families, and the love between them. Records of love that’ve lasted until now, just because someone years ago noted it down, or carved a name into something. Something unspoken between them when Archie looks over the latest amethyst Miner’s given him, the gemstone of his dwarven side of the family, and Archie laughs just a little bit, not unkindly, and says he’ll make sure to label it clearly.
