What I find so stupid about the Minecraft movie is that while yes it’s a Jumanji ripoff, it misses the fundamental point just like any other Jumanji ripoff. Jumanji has the first movie wherein the boardgame comes to life and wreaks havoc in the real world

Then the second one is still mildly unique by twisting that concept around: Remodeling the boardgame into a video game and having people be sent into that

Then the third one somehow ripped off its own predecessor but we don’t talk about that movie

The point that I’m trying to make here is that part of what makes Jumanji II work (at least for me) is the fact that it has a first movie to back it up. Jumanji has a vague theme of changing times, and the fact that the movies are set at least one or two decades apart in their canon helps with that. It’s why Jumanji II works, but all of these ripoffs don’t see that and instead think it’s simply the “going into a video game” part that made Jumanji II so popular and ignoring the very real demographic that grew up with the first one.

The only thing Minecraft has is a video game that, while played by people of all ages and being something a lot of people grew up with, every single one of those experiences is unique; You have no singular previous media or story as a “base” for the movie that you can twist around except for the base game itself, and that just does not work. It becomes a Jumanji II ripoff in the same way Jumanji III is a ripoff of that same movie.
