ALIIEEEENZZZ!! in anime (A very, very confused rant about a anime and “power relations” tropes between humans and aliens)
So I just finished watching Planet With and it was sort of interesting, it cannot be said that it has the best story, soundtrack or graphic arts (be it animation, character design, backgrounds, etc) but certainly interesting because it got me thinking about how aliens are depicted in anime compared to other media.
Planet With:
If you do not know what anime show I am talking about, Planet With is a science fiction series that is about a alien boy with amnesia and a big cat that eats the eats the boy and then transforms into a neko-mecha… oh yeah and there is also a vegetarian maid.
Fig 1.- The main characters of the anime Planet With
I will try to make this as spoilers-free as possible but in interest of this post I find it sadly inolvidable to talk about the aliens in this anime… By the way, this is your last spoiler warning: 3, 2, 1…
The main conflict in Planet With has to do with the evolutionary stage of telepathy, when a species begins to become psychically sensitive there two main evolutionary paths that can be taken by the collective and individuals of the species: evolving for love or evolving for power. Nebula, a collective of various and diverse alien species and races have evolved via the path of love but have seen what has happened to those who chose the evolutionary path for power which results in a “dragon”, Nebula tends to be a little bit jumpy about dragons because once upon a time there was a very big galactic dragon that did the minor naughty sin of GENOCIDE OF AN ENTIRE PLANET.
When the humans start evolving into telepaths, Nebula cannot help but notice that the humans are following the evolutionary path of power and it is from here where the interaction between Nebula and Humanity begins. Typically at this stage the story will present the aliens as something completely negative, since most story that talk about opposing ideals and ideologies display the conflict in a reductive manner, one sad being common sense and the other simply bad, mad, and silly (An example of this would be Thanos plan to solve all of the universes problem in the film Avengers Infinity War). Surprisingly Planet With presents the aliens and their meddling in human affairs with quite some nuanced:
Fig.2.- Examples of the “bizarre taste” of the aliens
1.- The political splintering of a alien polis because of a mutual problem:
Nebula is in essence a pacifist civilization, they believe in diplomacy, collectivism and love (You can see this reflected in their bizzare taste), it makes sense that their “arch enemy” is the dragon, which is a being of pure empowerment of the individual but crazed with his own sense of justice fueled by individualism. Despite all of the positive aspects it has to be said that Nebula has been traumatized by the actions of the Dragon and this results in desperate and extreme conclusions when it comes to a possible new dragon (This coming from the new human telepaths). This results in the sealing faction (being led by a big white dog) which concludes that the humans have to have their evolution sealed (this means trapping the entire human species into a eternal dream state where all of their ambitions and fantasies are satisfied, killing their ambition and wish to grow, connect and evolve), but there are those that believe that being this extreme is aggressive and hypocritical of a civilization that claims to have evolved from love, these are the pacifist faction (who are led by a big blue cat).
2.- The position of each faction of Nebula is clear and honest:
What I love about the political conflict is that it is obvious that the two alien factions are annoyed by their political opponents but they do not use pseudo-over the top-unnecessary-philosophy to justify their position or criticize the other one, in fact the sealing faction is able to convince some humans to help them because of past events that gives them some credibility (the same can be said about the pacifist faction).
Fig.3.- Leaders of the two Nebula factions (Left: pacifist faction; Right: sealing faction)
3.- The problem of a “intervention of a foreign power” is addressed
Of course, the series those conclude that one of the factions is wrong and the other is right and this would be a “black and white” situation but this anime is self aware of the political context of its story. One of the human telepaths (the most powerful of them) has some extreme political ideas about individualism but does make a good criticism about Nebula when he is fighting against the sealing faction: “You are imposing forcefully your values onto us, how is that not a invasion?” This is a fair criticism, since one must ask as a citizen of a nation that decides to get involved in a different countries conflict “Why do we intervene into others problems? Are we justified in doing so? Does our actions reflect what we claim are our good willed intentions?” We can see these questions revealing certain military interventions in our reality being not only problematic but tragic (You may pick any of the United States wars against terror/evil/danger). But in the anime I would personally say that the intervention of Nebula (in the context of the complete story) is not only necessary but is actually beneficial to the human species because, you know: diversity.
One last thing I wish to clarify about the multiple conflicts and interactions between the Nebula factions and the human species is that it is not a battle of opposing ideologies or the nationalistic supremacy of any of the sides, because in the end of the day all of the characters (except for the dragon) want the best for humanity but simply disagree what is actually the best; I will admit, this is a not only a optimistic but a ideal (even utopian) political situacion, it kinda of gives me a weird Star Treky vibe. And I really appreciate that, since this kind of depiction of the political + social relationship between aliens and humans in a anime is actually quite rare. How rare? Well I am glad you ask because I made a list!
I would argue that most relationships between aliens and humans in media is one of power, be it technological, physical, social, spiritual, or the capacity of one market to commodify almost anything. Unless it is a situation where the humans and aliens are sort of equals in terms of power (and even if this is the case…), typically the relationship will result in one group abusing the other; be it a invading them, eating them, exterminating them, changing them or commodifying the population (be this slavery, food stock or tokenism). This tendencies is related to what aliens usually represent in media: the other, the unknown, the powerful, the grand administrator, the madness, the colonist or the colonized. The list that will be presented below is based on this argument of mine (This list is composed mostly of anime that I have watched, so no this list does not contain all anime that depicts hostile aliens):
Some anime that depicts Hostile alien tropes (Includes Spoilers):

So enjoy~ (as always albums will be linked to bandcamp and youtube and remember everything is my opinion so don’t cry or rage)
MB Oji-san’s Top 5 Metal Albums of June 2017

7. Elder - Reflections of a Floating World
8. Havukruunu – Kelle surut soi
9. Immolation - Atonement
10. Draugsól - Volaða Land
MB Oji-san’s Top/Ratings of Spring 2017 Anime (not including sequels and even if I did Tsuki ga Kirei is AOTY lmao)
1, Tsuki ga Kirei - I consider myself a romanticist, despite seeming to be a cold hearted ass that constantly listens to Metal and enjoying my own company, I too yearn for a pure love that Tsuki ga Kirei made me witness, yet being quite a cynic myself, I still believe that pure love can blossom in this cruel world, whether it be real or fiction... and who would have thought Tsuki ga Kirei managed to give me that with two simple plain looking Japanese middle school students, Tsuki ga Kirei was as pure as it can be, no random BS like you see in many current romance anime (heck Kimi no Na Wa had to use another plot concept to keep us rooting for the main couple) whilst Tsuki ga Kirei used many precious moments and many forms of conflicts to keep us rooting for Akane and Kotarou to stay with one another. It fascinates me that such a simple yet pretty looking (despite those outplace CG background characters) romance Anime can grab the attention of my heart despite me not being able to relate to the concept (tfw no gf ever) so thank you to studio feel. for allowing me to witness such a pure romance anime, for you have created my current Best Anime of 2017... 9/10
2. Sakura Quest - Well I’m glad at least I’ll be able to watch a show about cute adult Anime girls ACTUALLY working unlike CERTAIN ANIME New Game! during the 2017 Summer season 8.5/10
3. Alice to Zouroku - The character designs were nothing special yet the soundtrack and heart of this series about a grumpy old man nurturing a little girl with special powers into a woman voiced by Yukari Tamura was... WONDER DRIVE!!!! 8/10
4. Shuumatsu Nani Shitemasu ka? Isogashii desu ka? Sukutte Moratte Ii desu ka? - The ending of this series left me in a bit of manly tears yet also with many questions, probably a sub-par adaption in the eyes of those who read the source material yet at least this adaption did its job by advertising the Light Novel 7.5/10
5. Seikaisuru Kado - Goddamn I didn’t want to agree with the critics but the few final episodes of this Sci-Fi series with so much potential drifted it away from said potential, I was kinda disappointed but Kado at least kept me entertained in its beginning stages... 7.5/10
6. Re:Creators - I know this show is gonna be 2 cours but damn does it take long to reach the action, Sawano and the plot itself is overrated but it’s still a good show 7.3/10
7. Rokudenashi Majutsu Koushi to Akashic Records - Up and down this adaption was going, sadly left with a incomplete rushed ending, I knew this would happen to an Anime based on a light novel/manga like this... well Rumia is an angel so it makes up with that 7/10
8. Renai Boukun - Kiss Note was a decent RomCom, nothing phenomenal but WUG did the OP and MONACA did the OST so, 7/10
9. Zero Kara Hajimeru Mahou no Sho - meh loli witch and the beast, was a pretty good LN adaption but kinda overrated 7/10
10. Granblue Fantasy The Animation - More like GranWaifu Fantasy The Animation 7/10
11. Fukumenkei Noise - A decent shoujo manga adaption with GREAT MUSIC ALT.ROCK courtesy of Ayahi Takagaki and Saori Hayami! 6.8/10
12. Dungeon ni Deai wo Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darou ka Gaiden: Sword Oratoria - Pretty sure the LN is better but the Anime adaption kinda sucks, well at least the Elf Yuri Vibes between Lefiya and Filvis were great 6.5/10
13. Saekano S2 - Megumi best girl but Utaha stole Aki’s first kiss so this show kinda sucks- well I didn’t expect much from a Harem Ecchi LN adaption so... 6.5/10
14. Hinako Note - Damn, the studio must’ve used all that fanservice in the show to make viewers unaware that this was just another basic moe slice of life Anime, well the OP and ED was great 6.5/10
15. Tsugumomo - Don’t have much to say, was just glad to hear Kiriha have Satania’s VA (Gabriel Dropout was my Anime of Winter 2017) 6.5/10
16. Frame Arms Girls - The F.A Girls were pretty cute and Aoi is pretty cute, too many panty shots but the Japanese audience seem to enjoy it, Base best girl 6.5/10
17. PriPri Chii-chan - Uh.. Momo Asakura and Toyosaki Aki ED, that’s all 6.3/10
18. Clockwork Planet - HOW DOES AN ADAPTION WITH A GIRL LIKE RyuZu AND A GOOD SOUNDTRACK END UP HAVING SUCKY ANIMATION AND PLOT?????? 6/10
19. Busou Shoujo Machiavellianism - Can’t believe people actually liked this generic harem ecchi LN adaption adding action elements so it wouldn’t completely suck, people are entitled to their own opinion and at least the few final episodes were quite brutal and interesting 6/10
20. Sin Nanatsu no Taizai - It’s a sin to watch this show but ay, hot and gay female Lucifir voiced by Kitamura Eri was cool... BOOBS 5.7/10
21. Sagrada Reset - Yui Makino sings the themes but... this show is kinda dead and boring, can’t believe David Production is gonna make this 24 episodes... I will still watch tho 5.5/10
22. Eromanga Sensei - Anime is dying because of series like these, fanservice of 12 year old girls, saying they love dicks and love to be naked while playing piano... Sagiri was cute enough to convince me to continue to watch it but damn the Anime community and industry messed up if they love s**t like this Abomination Reborn/10
#goddamn my Eromanga review#RIP Anime but ay Metal looking strong this year#long post#review#top lists#anime#metal#mb oji-san's lists

Shindou’s Negotiating Style, or Why He’s NOT 100% w/ zaShunina
Short version:
Because Shindou, the toughest negotiator in Japan, firmly believes in the importance of negotiating so that all parties involved gain something in the end, any personal interest in either side’s demands are either left ambiguous or set aside entirely for the sake of this end goal where everybody gains something. This is how episode 0 is important: it establishes Shindou’s negotiating style aside from showing how he and Hanamori might live together or even share the same room because you gotta admit it’s going to be a pain to grab your suit from someone else’s room every morning.
It cannot be said that he’s 100% supportive of zaShunina’s cause because (1) negotiating in itself is his prime objective, (2) he’s spending a lot of time with zaShunina as he had with the Osakabe plating factory workers because he needs information to get to that goal of having the anisotropic and humanity mutually benefit from these series of negotiations, and (3) there still exists the possibility of having been brainwashed while inside Kado, and we don’t yet know what zaShunina told them in the cockpit.
It’s more of Shindou’s (almost stubborn) belief that all parties involved can gain something than it is Shindou siding with and believing in zaShunina 100%.
(image-heavy long version under the cut)
Long version:
In episode 0, we see Shindou and Hanamori spending their 1-month break before their reassignment doing an odd job for Undersecretary Igarashi.
It’s interesting to note how long Igarashi kept this plan on the back burner. He might have wanted to wait until Osakabe was nearing the age of retirement to put this plan into action. He might have been avoiding carrying out this plan himself because it involves having to shut down the factory of his friend to acquire the land, and he wants Shindou and Hanamori to do it quickly. Hanamori even thinks it’s selfish to demand that it be done quickly.
When they get to Osakabe Plating, we see Hanamori talking about the details of the plan as Shindou observes and as Osakabe reads the documents. Shindou could have negotiated the way Hanamori did--by presenting his side’s demands and convincing the other side to accept them (i.e. “[defeat] your opponent and temporarily [gain] what you want,” as Shindou had said to Hanamori in the plane)--but he didn’t.
Here’s where we see Shindou getting to know how the factory operates and actually involving himself in the factory’s activities to understand the factory’s situation.
(segue: I think he always asks Natsume for favors and she doesn’t have the heart to refuse him because she lowkey likes him lol)
Note: Shindou takes a lot of time and effort involving himself with both parties in the negotiation just to understand how to get to an outcome that’ll benefit both the factory and the government through gathering all the information he can and thinks he needs.
All of this, as well as his resulting conversation with Hanamori in the plane before Kado happened, establishes Shindou’s negotiating style.
Igarashi’s case serves as a parallel to zaShunina’s case.
zaShunina may have chosen this particular time to bestow upon humanity anisotropic technology for reasons similar to Igarashi’s: maybe the time for humanity to benefit from what he’ll give them has come because the threat of running out of resources is imminent.
zaShunina hasn’t taken the time to really know humanity, as he’s still learning about the human world, but thinks he knows what suits it--as Igarashi thought he was only helping out Osakabe by giving him retirement money through the original plan when business prospects in Osakabe’s field were looking grim, and yet further research shows that there’s still hope for the factory.
zaShunina is essentially largely unknown. As Shindou had taken his time immersing himself in the factory’s environment and working with the factory workers to get to know how they operate, Shindou spends a lot of time and effort to bridge the information gap between zaShunina and himself (and between zaShunina and the world by extension). Shindou also spends time asking where the Japanese government stands. He pays attention to the responses to the anisotropic--as Tsukai does--and involves himself with the major players in this negotiation.
We didn’t know where Shindou really stood in Igarashi’s case. He just treated it like a job and he sympathized with no one. I can confidently say that the case is the same when it comes to zaShunina.
There are only few instances where we get to see him expressing any semblance of an opinion on the whole anisotropic shebang.
We don’t get to know what he meant by what he said about happiness because Tsukai cut him off before he could elaborate. We only know that Natsume’s take on it was not what he’d been wondering about. But maybe that’s just it. His duty as a negotiator and his goal of making sure all parties are left satisfied are what matters more than his own take on the situation, and so any opinion of his on the entire situation is merely hinted at, ambiguous, or set aside (as of now, since we have a couple of episodes to go). And that’s why I don’t believe he’s 100% supportive of zaShunina’s plan for humanity.
We don’t even know what zaShunina had told him and the others in the cockpit. We’re not even sure if the anisotropic’s capable of brainwashing. That possibility’s still present. If there’s brainwashing involved, then Shindou’s just forced to accept and support zaShunina’s stance not out of his own volition. Even then, he doesn’t know all of what zaShunina’s planning, else he wouldn’t have looked so shookt when zaShunina’d revealed to him the reason why he doesn’t sleep recently.
Shindou’s just earnestly trying to fulfill his role as a negotiator even if he’s aware there isn’t just one answer.
And yet zaShunina keeps pushing humanity, the Japanese gov’t in particular, to making decisions in hopes that humanity would come to the right answer, implying that there is one answer. This segues into a discussion on the anisotropic himself, but that’s for another time and definitely on a separate post.
(Special mention to @aella-a and a friend of mine off-tumblr bc they both talked Seikaisuru Kado to me lol. This is also the result of going through the entire Seikaisuru Kado tag like I don’t think I’m ever doing that for a diff. fandom again after this. _(:3」∠)_)

Since you wanna know about some good anime I thought I'd recommend you "Kara no Kyoukai" if you haven't seen it yet! Although it's an anime movie series consisting of 7 movies if I remember correctly! Currently airing is "Seikaisuru Kado" which is really good in my opinion, uses 3D animation which looks absolutely beautiful, however the fandom is still pretty small ^-^ Oh and "Fate/Apocryoha" starts airing next month I believe, it looks very promising to far, if you enjoy the Fate franchise :)
Sounds good, a friend of mine has watched Kara no Kyoukai and he really liked it :’) I’m not sure if it’s something for me though since I usually prefer series over movies (simply because of the like… structure, I tend to get bored by movies quickly), but I might give it a try. Seikaisuru Kado was actually on my to watch list for this season, but I’m not sure if I wanna be consumed by a shoelace fandom again, it’s just too painful hahahaAnyway thank you so much !!

Now let’s talk about Seikaisuru Kado or KADO: The Right Answer. This also was a quite surprising finding. I believe this is really too underrated.
Firstly, I completely understand being put off by the CGI. I personally quite like it, but I would also like to remember to not always judge something from its cover, and well… it can’t be worse than reality now, can it?
Furthermore, just look at him! Isn’t he just wonderful? I do have a certain particular preference for white-haired and red-eyes characters, but our manalien? God? here also reminds me of Merlin from Fate/Grand Order! As a Fate/ fanboi, this really please me and well, it already constitutes a reason to watch it.
But objectively speaking (or at least trying to do that), I think it’s really good as a sci-fi genre. It builds up quite well the “Kado” and the related techonologies and concepts: anisotropic (kind like the fourth dimension?), wam (MUGEN NO ENERGYY), Kado, etc.
I really like the Opening theme. I think it really fit the tone of the show.
Not really from the anime, but just wanted to share.
See, you should trust the white-haired-self-proclamed-outer-superior-being. He kept the promise and released 2 people. Ok, that’s nice and all, but how did negotiations go? I’m really curious. It should be quite clear that the right answer is to accept, the point is how?
Whoa! Equibalent decision-making powers to the prime minister?! (in national security, political and economic fields) That’s insane, or at least, I think getting so much power is a lot. And Shindou refuses? Oh, right. My inferior brain couldn’t think about the actual facts: you would be really chained by the Japanese government in that case.
We need your abilities, Shindo.
Lol. Nope, give that hassle to Hanamori.
Cuuuutee!
Have I already said how I find her cute? I liked her character from the beginning, and although I was expecting a more heated confrontation during last episode (like Light Yagami VS L, I suppose? Well, this wasn’t really the time to do that though) between the two of them. Hope to see in the future some high level negotiations in a more… intense way.
Yeah, Wams are simply incredible. Just thinking about the possibilities, the unlimited possibilities of their usage make me shiver. Hm? Why would be the most common opinion neutral? I would agree immediately. Umu, what about overseas? That’s really important to know.
…Sasuga humanity! You never stop to confirm my image of you! I understand that having one sole country managing the Wams, but seriously, for some illogical reasons I just can’t stand it. They were given by Yaha-kui zaShunina to the japanese, so it should be up to them to choose. Not to be forced by someone else. Or at least, request to simply share them, what’s the need to secure them and just make the UN manage them?
By the way, I really liked the reason zaShunina used for giving them to the japanese, the “bread”. What a beautiful concept, too bad it doesn’t really apply here. Also, isn’t the UN worried about having a super-advanced God/alien, who used as first coin bet a freaking unlimited source of energy, as enemy. I suggest reconsidering the choice of getting on his bad side.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Cute. CUTE. Seriously CUTE! My GodYaha-kui zaShunina, how can she be so cute? See? Screw CGI, cuteness is justice whatever the animation type.
Hm… I suppose you’re against it because mankind is still too unprepared. There isn’t enough “bread”, huh. That’s a good point too. Still, my greed make me want to disagree, strongly disagree, but your cuteness is too strong for me.
JijiOld Man, you don’t understand? Don’t worry, I and many others don’t understand either. NO CO2? Clean energy?! Holy, this is seriously a gift form God. Just… just how many problems would it resolve? Sure, it would bring more problems, but I think the former far outweight the latter, as conflicts are often caused by lack of resources, which could be produced somehow with infinite energy.
But… why the heck am I thinking so hard about it when it doesn’t exist in reality? Oh, well. Just another otaku’s rambling. Daydreaming is a skill we usually develop quite fast.
Umu, staying there for a month without anime, manga, light novels or visual novels. Oh, God. i would die from boredom, or at least go into vegetative state.
Hanamori-kun… you’re easily convinced, huh.
The Wam are not gifts to countries.
They are gifts to humanity.
I can’t stop liking Yaha-kui’s character. I just love how he evolves, and now he’s analyzing countries in a really… how to say it, convincing way? Anyways, I just like his explanation, all of his explanation. When he talks, it almost seems to create a solemn atmosphere, though this is also the result of a perfect combination between Voices, Visuals and Sounds/OSTs I suppose. Well in the end, you get it: I just really like him.
Another way? Japanese’s resolve? I wonder what’s the new method, it must be quite inconvenient compared to the first.
I can’t stand it.
UN being unreasonably realistic.
The whole reason zaShuina chose Japan was for the “bread”, and look how mankind lives up to your great expectations: “you either give us all the Wams, or the World will crush you”.
I seriously hate that kind of thing, be it your parents, be it your friends (yours, not mine as I don’t really have any), be it your classroom, be it society, be it the world; I truly hate those that force their views and beliefs on others, while trying to crush the minority and being able to do that because you are the majority. Let me quote what a woman said in a Light Novel I really like:
The world is narrow-minded. It is arrogant. It is cruel. The world does not acknowledge people who do not act according to its point of view. The world is not kind to us. It laughs at us, sneers at us, denies us. It dunks us into the coal tar and the bottom of the sea. In this world, we, who deviate only slightly from the conventions of others, are utterly alone. – Chigusa Yuu, Kuzu to Kinka no Qualidea (LN)
But my illogical rage towards the (human) world, which can go and explode, aside.
Let us return to the episode. No, wait. Something else came to mind: regarding the UN, I now wonder what was it actually doing in Gate: Thus the JDSF fought, I may have a short-term memory, but I believe it didn’t really do anything at all? Well, I suppose having the whole UN against is far worse than what actually happened in Gate.
Ok, let us continue.
Financial restrictions? Travel prohibitions? Ending diplomatic resolution? INTERNATIONAL MILITARY ACTION?!
Sure. Bring it on, World. I’m getting excited, excited to see how Japan destroy you (with zaShunina’s aid though).
Sorry for being naive, but I seriously hope, that Japan can stand against the UN. Please zaShunina, learn about their lack of “bread” and show them your superiority. Wait, now that I think about it, WAM ISN’T YOUR ONLY CARD RIGHT? AND TO THINK YOU USED IT FIRST… WHAT THE HELL DO YOU STILL HAVE? A TENGEN TOPPA GURREN LAGANN!?
Yeah, please let us know Shindou. Let us know the way around this.
…her? The a little-too-excited-scientist? (though I’m far more excited than her…). I’m curious about the criteria now. Sadly, Endingh theme already started…. Hm, ED is also really nice.
And I’m really excited by the preview. Can’t wait for next episode!
I’m seriously enjoying this show. It’s just so interesting, and the atmosphere it generates is great. The sci-fi elements are perfectly on point in my humble opinon. I have great expectation.
Great show! Strongly recommended! Izanagi’s score is: 8/9!
Regarding Seikaisuru Kado Episode 4 “And Thus War(?)” Now let's talk about Seikaisuru Kado or KADO: The Right Answer. This also was a quite surprising finding.
