MEDIUMS AND TRICKSTERS FROM 19TH CENTURY
Fits within my idea that there is a higher entity or higher Power in charge of things and this is just to give me ideas of similar ideals and ideas of that and what is the deal with my entity, why is it there. Where in reality probably their minds just seeing things out of focus from their eyes.
The Fox Sisters
Eva Carriere
Mina Crandon
OPINION _ It is interesting how the things we see on a daily basis can easily be warped, shifted and changed including the things we hear; just because our minds can't understand it and then we try to blame it on the most absurd of thing just to try and at least pull some essence of logic to it. But also this idea could work with mine and add extra layers to it. Cause think about this being stalked or watched within a crowed area you tend not to notice it as well "so many people" and to be fair you're more worried about your own little world and what needs to be done and that is also what I want to capture within this idea, that feeling of being watched despite not quite realising it.

has anyone tried to do an adaptation of scandal in bohemia thats set in the mid 1920s and is definitely also sort of about harry houdini & mina crandon's rivalry
#messages from the ouija board#my adhd brain loves making parallels and looking for patterns#also when i did try to google it i discovered that crandon was born the year scandal takes place#which is obviously unconnected but i love when coincidences like that strengthen my very stupid ideas#this thought actually began w me being like 'wow acd really was just following his really smart friend around & being shocked by shit'#'the inverse of this is obvs that watson would be easily pranked by camera-wielding tweens' which was a delightful thought#and then i just spiralled out of control from there

Pre-Lab 2: Paranormal Activity 7
Week 2 Readings
Low key getting ethics flashbacks from doing these case studies.
TLDR: After her husband discovers that she was a powerful medium, it became his mission 'perform the process of mind over matter.' As a result, Mina ended up conducting private seances, before undergoing numerous tests which aimed to debunk her status as a medium.
Mediums and Channelers
The tests on Mina started off as a result of a competition set out by Scientific American in which they would award $2500 to anyone who can prove that psychic phenomena was real. To protect Mina's reputation, she was given the nickname 'Margery.' (Though I'm not sure how a name change would protect her identity when people have seen what she looks like as 'Mina'... Maybe I will bring this up in the lab...)
One of the people on the Scientific American committee was Harry Houdini, who became set on calling out Margery as a fraud. The tests he conducted on Margery is better elaborated in the next article.
Tests which were conducted on Margery by the committee include: 1. Water test: Filling Marjery's mouth with water and seeing if the 'spirits' were still able to speak 2. Balloon test: Same as water test but with an inflated balloon
However, even though she allowed these tests to be conducted and cooperated with the team, the team did not always reciprocate this good will and abused her.
The Haunted Museum: Houdini's Greatest Nemesis
Some additional details which weren't present in the last article were Houdini's trials on Margery. 1. Boxed: Margery was placed in a box with only her head and arms sticking out. Apparently, Margery's spirit control was not happy about this and ripped apart the top of the box. 2. Bell: When inside the box, Margery had to ring the bell. However, it was found that the bell had dampeners inside so it would not ring.
There was no proof that Houdini had placed the dampeners in the bell. However, Margery's spirit control claimed that Houdini had placed a ruler inside the box to frame Margery of cheating. This discredited anything Houdini had claimed against Margery.
Mina Crandon & Harry Houdini: The Medium and The Magician
The reason for Houdini's distaste towards mediums was because, after he had lost his mother, he saught for the help of mediums to contact her. However, he soon discovered that there were many fraudulent mediums who were trying to take advantage of his grief.
The article also revealed that the investigators were possibly biased towards the Crandons as they had taken advantage of their hospitality such as borrowing money.
After Houdini's death, Margery was able to produce 'teleplastic' manifestations, where ectoplasm was issued from her orifices sometimes formed into hands. Margery said that these were responsible for the paranormal happenings. However, upon examination, skeptics began to point out that they have never seen the ectoplasm extrude frm Margery's body, and that, in photographs, it seemed like the ectoplasm looked like animal lung tissue which were suspended by invisible threads.
A controversial phenomenon that happened, which was also explored in the previous articles, was when Margery's spirit control claimed that he was able to leave behind a fingerprint, which he did. However, it was later revealed that the fingerprint belonged to Margery's dentist.
Reflection
Okay, so I decided to do an image search of 'Margery Crandon' and found photos of her with a 'materialised hand' which was found out to be made from carved animal liver. So was she a fraud or not?
But my main question is... how does this relate to security? Maybe... we need to protect our data the way Margery protected her 'medium skills'? For example, in Margery's case, no matter how much torment she went through, people were still unable to say with certainty whether her skills were real or not. In a security context, we should protect our data such that it is not compromised if people were to constantly attack it from all angles. Our security measures must be as strong as Margery's "deception" skills (if she was a fraud).
This is the mindset I have developed by reading these articles on my own, and the mindset I will be starting class with. I wonder if this will change by the end.

Module 2 Case Study Preparation - Houdini
Harry Houdini was not only a master escapist but also famous debunker of mediums.
Mina ‘margery’ stinson crandon was a famous medium and was under observation for her physic abilities. Houdini did not believe that she could actually communicate with the dead. After a whole bunch of tests, it was discovered that Mina did indeed commit fraud in at least one of her sessions. However it has not been proven that her whole persona was a sham and many believe that she was indeed a legitimate medium

Houdini case study prereading
From the readings, my first thoughts are that Houdini was basically a pentester against spiritualism. He found out frauds by thinking like an attacker and targeting weak points in the showings he attended, whereas some other observers were just wowed by the seemingly unnatural acts performed.
It was also interesting to see how most of the committee investigating Mina chucked their objectivity out the window by accepting gifts and the like from the Crandons. It highlights that things like standards and investigations are pointless if the party doing the investigating allows themselves to be influenced. I wonder how often that happens in modern day society. Probably not often... right?
