Out of all the Beatles, who do you think had the most stable environment growing up?

Seems like George had the most stable environment to me, but ill rank them all to procrastinate on school work

1. George

@sailtheshipchopthetree informed me on a lot of this in the comments to this post (x) (so credit goes to them!) but apparently Georges mum was a very supportive force, even through Hamburg era and the early, unpromising Beatles career. As well as this, they mentioned that George was getting poor grades at school, largely due to him putting in a lack of effort to his studies at the Liverpool institute. But this suggests he felt so secure in his parents love and affection for him that he didn't fear failure or feel a need to excel in his subjects.

And also, theres this interview (x) of course, in which we learn Georges dad was fucking legend and we love him <333 Plus, George had siblings - and I know in later life him and one of his sisters didn’t speak for years - although I think there must be more to that story that I don’t know, because its just ridiculously petty and cold - but outside of that I recall him speaking fondly of his early family life in “I. Me. Mine.”

I think the Harrisons had some financial struggles, but overall, I feel they were a strong, supportive family unit, with a good sense of humour.

2. Ringo

Ringo I think also had a pretty stable environment - although his father left both him and his mother, so Elsie (Ringo's mother) was left as a single mother - which especially in such a patriarchal era must have been difficult. He had a step-father too, although im not sure exactly when he came into the picture. And then of course there was his sicknesses, which must have put a lot of stress onto his poor mum. But outside of all this, ive heard Ringo had a great relationship with his mum and step-dad - so although that family faced a lot of trials and tribulations, they still seemed like a very loving one even through the more unstable and difficult times.

3. Paul

And then theres the McCartneys. We really don’t know much about Mary outside of what Paul has told us, which tends to be very positive - and so its difficult to discern any clear outline of her as a person. But we know a bit more regarding Pauls father, Jim; although Angie McCartney (Pauls step-mum) portrayed him in her book as a very reserved and self-effacing man, and didn’t mention any instances of aggression on his behalf - this portrayal of him seems to be contrasted by mentions from Paul that his dad would hit him into his late teens, and was arguably overly-controlling. Thats not to say though that I don’t believe these two sides to Jim couldn’t co-exist - I feel they did! And I wouldn’t be surprised if Angie seldom ever saw him yell or anything, as they married when Jim was already ill and old, and therefore more fragile. But I think Jim could be both a stable and unstable force - where in some instances his controlling nature was probably quite grounding, in other cases it perhaps drove Paul towards an insecurity.

Theres also his mothers death at 14, which was very abrupt for both Paul and Mike, being that they weren't told of her illness until shortly before her passing. A disruption like that probably threw Pauls once overall stable and loving environment into chaos.

4. John

Im very conflicted with the whole Julia vs Mimi thing, and I just dont know who to believe. Some say Mimi practically just stole John from his adoring mother, Julia, solely on the basis of classist and sexist reasons. Other people say Julia was reckless and negligent, and Mimi was genuinely concerned. I think it was a bit of both really - my guess would be that Julia could be impulsive, a bit reckless, and emotional, all of which had the capacity to be both good and bad traits! And I don’t doubt that she adored John - but I think she was probably struggling with some sort of untreated mental illness (perhaps BPD or Bipolar, or both even? Just pure speculation, but I think it was definitely something) that could make raising a child challenging, and so I do think Mimi probably intervened with good intentions - although I believe that there was also classism and sexism involved in her making this decision to “adopt” John in a sense.

Alf I just don’t have much to say on because he wasn’t in Johns life throughout his childhood, but it clearly promoted an insecurity within John and his attachment patterns. And there was also Johns Uncle George, who was effectively a father figure to him until he abruptly died when John was 13. He’s someone who can tend to be overlooked in his significance to Johns abandonment issues - but certainly his death did really displace John. He apparently complimented Mimi well, because he was a very easy-going guy, whereas Mimi was clearly quite stern and strict and difficult; and I cant even go into all my thoughts on Mimi here cause I have so many (though I don’t hate her, but im definitely not a cheerleader). I wrote out quite a lot of my thoughts on her here (x) and here (x) though if anyone wants to read them!

Ive just got so much to say about Johns upbringing that I can’t even get into all of it rn (cause im tired) but I think you get the point. There was a lot of instability.

Nailing that Dynamic- Recs - Day 1

Day 1 for Creator’s Week, and I gotta say, this is my favorite fan event, mainly because it was the first one I participated last year. This little rec set is devoted to dynamics, divided into friendship, found family, and finally romantic (and yes, that’s Malex with me.)

We’ve had two seasons of this show, and while I can’t really relate to aliens or even the immigrant story, I do relate strongly to the stories behind friendship. I can say my appetite for fic with a good friendship dynamic will always be there.

Will You Be My Friend- Circle Yes or No (recs)

Finding You by @myrmidryad  (122,000) - If by chance the canon from high school bums you out, this is the story to read. Gin writing malex is always a ‘no-brainer I’m gonna read it story’ for me, but what really set this epic apart was how beautifully Gin writes the friendship dynamics between Michael & Liz, and Michael & Max. It’s a canon-divergent story with no-murder of Rosa or the shed scene, where in order to avoid enlistment, Alex disappears from Roswell and joins the Max & Liz road trip with Michael in tow. They just need to fill that gap between high school and the opening of the dorms at UNM so they can start a life together. And fill it they do with this road trip. There were moments where I sobbed with how badly Michael needed this in canon and didn’t get it. It also made me like Max, so, yeah. Great writing and characterizations here.

Hit the Road by @bestillmyslashyheart - (7,100) - One of the brightest spots for me in season two was Rosa Ortecho, and one of the most frustrating parts of season two was the fact we didn’t get any interaction between her and Alex. *screams* At least I had a few crumbs of Rosa & Maria (not nearly enough!) but still. Where there’s a glaring gap in canon, thank god there’s fanfic. Marlo treats us to a delightful story written post season 1, but had some surprisingly psychic lines about Malex, number one how they don’t think they are good for one another. I really enjoyed what this story says about leaving-  and honestly, the town of Roswell has so much pain tied to these characters, they should all take long road trips away from it.

a few drinks and some conversation by @christchex / @michaels-blackhat (5,600 ) - this one is set post-season 2, with all the complications of Michael deciding now wasn’t the right time for him and Alex, while also working on giving Maria the right space after their breakup.  I think it’s pretty clear that Michael needs a friend he’s not related to and someone he hasn’t slept with - to provide him so low-stakes genuine company outside of the alien bullshit and love triangle dynamics. Christi does this beautifully through the eyes of an OC and the number of times I’ve read this story is like 10, and also, it’s inspired my current story about Michael going on dates.

and headin’ out singing our song by @stars-and-sunshine (4,100) post season 2, Alex and Michael head off on a road trip (okay, this is a trope I apparently like since I’ve recced three stories now, hahaha) after Alex’s car breaks down. There’s a careful space in this story, of two men building a friendship again. The roadtrip details are beautiful, but what stayed with me is a scene in the museum. That summer of 2008 had some ghosts to address.

If I Follow You Home, Will You Keep Me? found-family dynamics

When You’re Gone by @bestillmyslashyheart (8,200) - Before I tell you why I love this story, I want everyone to follow the next link and read this story about email and messages and grief in the digital age [trigger for cancer death] chat history by Rebecca  Armendariz. (She also wrote a follow up called Timelines published by the Hairpin that talks about the memory function on facebook.) So back to the story, this is Rosa, opening her email 10 years after her death and reading the messages people sent her, thinking they were speaking into the void. Liz, Maria, Alex, Mimi and Arturo, all of them sending her notes, sometimes time passes without an email, then an event triggers that memory of Rosa not being there- and yeah, I found this whole thing to be so moving.

Never Ever Getting Rid of Me by @spaceskam - (4,400) this probably could have gone in the friendship side, but I feel like when you work in a high stakes place like a hospital, friends is a term that ends up being too light, and with the level of competition and stress it grows a bond like family... anyway, this is an AU where Michael and Kyle end up at the same hospital as competing interns but some elements of canon are still there.

still fixing all the cracks by @emma-arthur -  (3,400) this is a pre-canon story, set when Alex is 14. He’s still a soft child, being tortured by his dad, and soaking up the attention from Liz, Rosa and Arturo when he breaks a glass and spirals. Heavy discussion of child abuse and homophobic abuse, but a really good exploration of the canon-neglected Liz & Alex friendship, plus with that paternal Arturo Ortecho in the mix...

Ophiuchus by @planetsam - (11,600) the other bright side of season 2 was the reveal of Walt Sanders as being not only Michael’s boss, but someone who knew his mother, knew what he was, and silently looked out for him...now of course I wish he had been more overt in doing this, but fanfic once again has fixed this canon-oversight. This is an incredible look through Walt’s eyes as he gets in over his head adopting an alien child, especially one who already had issues from previous foster placements. I could read a million words in this verse.

The Michael Sanders AU by @prouvaireafterdark (17,000 ) And speaking of great AUs where Michael is raised by Walt, I would be really amiss in not mentioning this one. It’s got hot high school Malex moments, emotional/hurt comfort for both Michael’s past foster placements but also the shit Alex is living with at home. I have to say “Honey if You Stay” is my favorite, just because of how badly I wanted to hug teen Alex...

and finally, no found family rec list could be complete without mentioning the epic series To Raise a Child (117,000 in progress) by @haloud and @maeglinthebold - season 2 put some hits on my headspace and emotional reserves, not to mention 2020 nonsense, so I’m dreadfully behind in commenting on this story. It’s just a huge emotional bandaid for me right now- it takes the idea of “what if the adults in Roswell actually looked out for their children (and other peoples children) and protected them from shit” and what would that change. Michael was found at 7 and then runs away to Roswell at 10, so yeah, humans have already done their best to convince him the world sucks and only finding his siblings matters... Jim Valenti steps in, knowing what he is, and finds him a place in Roswell with Arturo Ortecho. Anyway, everyone gets a turn- Jim, Mimi, the kids, etc in the story, it’s well rounded and fleshed out. Obviously being a malex person my favorite parts are the kid-friendship/this-is-just-a-crush moments in second story, where if you hadn’t lost your heart to Michael Ortecho by then, well, you’re a goner after that story. 

I Could Build Your Heart A Home (malex recs)

time will lie down and be still by @islndgurl777 (29,600) the Practical Magic AU - which I loved but I have never seen the movie it’s based on lol... anyway, this story almost belonged up with my found family dynamic recs, because the story opens with Isobel and Michael being 7 and 8 years old alien siblings and left with Mimi Deluca to raise with her daughter Maria, because with their father recently dead, their mother would soon follow as a species level soulmate bond. Michael vows never to fall in love. Then there’s a beautiful friendship between Maria, Liz, Isobel and Michael as they grow up together that I just wanted to roll around in forever... However this is a Malex rec, so once Alex enters the story in high school and things go down similarly with Jesse, Michael is heartbroken, his soulmate (he thinks) is gone, vanished into the Air Force, and he spends the next 10 years helping Maria, going to school with Liz, and keeping in touch with Isobel. Until 2018 when Isobel finds out her perfect man was like them, an alien, and bad, and they are forced to cover up his murder. Then Alex comes to town. But the soulmate storyline is the winner here and I just re-read it again.

here everyone knows (you’re the way to my heart) by @adamsparirsh (19,700) So this story tackles a dynamic that think will be the death-knell to the Alex/Forrest relationship- the weight of the alien secret and Alex’s responsibility gland and what that looks like to someone who wants to be in a relationship with him. The exclusion. But outside of that- there’s this part of Alex that isn’t willing to let anyone in that isn’t already there, and that’s Michael. I’m fucking weak for stories where these two assholes can’t connect with anyone but each other, and this one hits it. There’s also so many lovely friendship dynamics between everyone showing up for Alex- like Rosa, Isobel, Max, Maria. Obviously this is a Malex-is-endgame story, even though it starts Alex/Forrest.

it’s a long road back to you by @magsthemagical  (17,000) This was an interesting, now AU take on what if Maria/Michael dated at the same time as Alex/Forrest, and honestly, I thought basted on the season two spoilers that was where we were heading. I was gobsmacked by 2x13. Anyway, here’s a story that discusses the tension that would happen if there had been simultaneous dating going on…the parts where Michael sees Alex being open with someone other than him were very raw and true to how I would think he would feel. For 10 years he wanted that and didn’t get it, and so of course the problem was probably him?? Anyway, I enjoyed this a lot, and again felt robbed that we are heading into a new triangle for season 3. 

untouched by @prouvaireafterdark (5,200) - okay, you know when you have an alien soulmate idea in your head and you want it to appear on the page, and then it does and it’s everything you wanted? That’s what happened to me when ‘Untouched’ appeared. Obviously it’s AU, but my reptile brain just loves the idea that Michael and Alex can’t get off with anyone else, and then that frustration builds into a sexy explosion... there’s also some communcation happening with these clowns. But seriously for 5,000 words, A LOT HAPPENS here and I loved every word.

Would you come home by @caitlesshea (1000) How great would have it been if season 2 had ended with Michael and Alex found a baby in a stasis pod instead of Beardy Jones? Like seriously, this short little fic healed so many of my wounds from season 2 that I couldn’t help but include it here. I would take 50,000 more words in this sadly AU take. 

Hoarding you by @foramomentonly (1200) okay, so the rain smell, like 2x04 was low key my favorite episode of RNM ever, especially with Alex throwing that flirty line “It’s smells like rain, that’s what you smell like under the grease and bourbon’ and this author takes that line, and fucking murders me with the idea that Alex can’t move on because of that smell. And Michael is now his, and finds out about it. This is my head canon, okay? No one can talk me out of it.

Xiaojun - @legendnct Hannah, why do I feel like you’re a very busy person? Like you have a lot of things on your plate and stressed because of college/burnt out from time to time. Xiaojun’s the type of guy who massages your shoulder or temples whenever he senses that you need a break. He’ll give you the space that you want whenever you’re doing uni stuff, probably in the same room as you just letting you study and placing your fave snacks and drinks beside you to remind you to take a break sometimes. He’s clingy when he wants to but respecting you is his number 1 priority.

Hendery - @smolchenle The vibes man ndksjdks (Sabog and sabay, kaloka lmAO) Wouldn’t mind doing the stupidest thing with you . There would be no dull moments together, istg. You’re basically each other’s happy pill aweeee. Oooh hahaha, I can totally imagine you having a disgusted “wtf, dude,” on your face whenever he does something funny only to follow his lead a couple of seconds later. Renjun - @jae-ffrey Zen, you’re a year older than me but wow, you are wise and sensible. You’re a great listener as well and I feel like Renjun would enjoy your company. He’s very open minded and isn’t afraid to have fun from time to time, making you complement each other.

Jeno - @nzeeten My cute babies! I want to keep you both in my pocket ugh. Tbh, I get a strong independent woman vibe from you but at the same time, a very huge softie inside. Jaemin - @4-sun Jaemin better take good care of you or else! You’re laidback and composed (like Jeno nHSSK) and I can definitely see him taking you out on a photowalk, just walking in your city without any plans and taking photos of different views (expect him to snap a photo of you from time to time uwu) and going to a café after. Also, you’re very generous when it comes to compliments. I can see Jaemin as someone who absolutely loves those things.

Yangyang - @lovelyvitamin The amount of crackhead energy that you two have sends nKSKSKSK. I want you to have someone who understands your amazing humor and listens to your weird and out of the blue stories. Yangyang’s there to top your crazy stories with his and would do everything in his power to make you feel loved, appreciated and happy-- even going an extra mile. You make each other happy and I live for that thought itself!

Chenle - @imaginedreamies I feel like Chenle is going to baby tf out of you plus treats you like a queen, don’t @ me. You push each other to be better versions of yourselves. Like Chenle, I feel like you’re much more of a giver than a taker. It’ll be nice for Chenle to feel the love he gives to other people. 

Jisung - Langga anon! (I lost ur acc huhuhu) Ahhhhh, my two kiddos. I ship you with him bc I highkey imagine the both of you having a cute puppy love romance. Ya know, just being subtle with each other when it comes to expressing your love and affection. Missed u baby!

Digimon Adventure Shipping Masterpost - Part 2

Part 1 

Sora x Izzy (Kora)

Pros:They’re both the most level headed of the group and there’s relatively little drama between them. So if you want something sweet and cute that’s stress free, then this could do ya.  There’s also the added bonus of breaking up the Tai/Sora/Matt triangle. 

Cons: They’re also kind of boring. They don’t play off one another in any interesting way. They’re just generally nice to each other and can work together as a team, and that’s about it.  They also rarely interact outside of the group. 

Personal Ranking (5/10) Eh..I can see it working and I don’t mind it as a refreshing break from the drama, but there are more interesting ships out there for them.

Sora x Mimi (Mira)

Pros: These two were the only two girls on the team for a long while, so naturally they spent a lot of time together on screen. They’re best friends, and therefore a lesbian’s dream team of a pairing. They got that opposites attract vibe, they’re relatively drama free, and they’re still other girls on the team that they interact with so it’s not like we’re losing the only female friendship on the show if you ship them.    

Cons: Mimi is largely absent in 02, so we get less interaction between them than other Adventure characters. Also, while there are other female friendships none are quite as close as these two and so you may prefer them as platonic. 

Personal Ranking (6/10) Like with Kora, I can see them working, and I do indeed like Mimi-centric ships a lot, but I kind of prefer them as a friends since for the longest time they were the only female friendship on the show; back when I was first watching.  

Sora x Joe (Joura)

Pros: These two spend a lot of time together in Adventure. There’s lot of one on one interaction for them up episodes for them. They work well as a team, while still being different enough to make for an interesting interactions.  Also if you have the love triangle, Joe and Sora are seen suspiciously close together during the epilogue.  

Cons: Sora is in a canon ship already, if that matters to you. Plus Joe may not be your favorite, as he’s pretty decisive. Then there’s the fact that he and Sora do bump heads more so than Sora does with anyone else. It’s like a tei between Tai and Joe over who can annoy Sora the most in season one. 

Personal Ranking (7/10) This is my second favorite ship for Sora, but that’s probably because I just really like Joe a lot. 

Sora x T.K. (Sokeru)

Pros: This ship is oddly popular in certain sections of the fandom. I’m guessing for the same reasons why Yamakari is liked. Sora is very protective of TK in season one. While their interactions do taper off after that point, they’re still seen hanging out together in 02 and Tri, at times.  

Cons: Once again their interactions are limited to mostly group settingings. They also have the same age gap as all of the 02/Adventure pairings. Given how most of their moments are in season one where that age gap makes the most difference, there’s little to go on post Adventure.  

Personal Ranking (4/10) Yeah, not enough interaction to sell this one for me. 

Sora x Kari (Sokari)

Pros: More femslash options. They’re mostly drama free and are very similar in terms of personality. Also, when placed together they cancel out each other’s respective love triangles. 

Cons: All of the same cons as Sokeru. Also they are very similar personality wise and so their dynamic may bore you. 

Personal Ranking (3/10) Yeah, count me as one who finds them boring. Add in the age gap and lack of interaction and this ship is a no go for me. 

Sora x Davis (Daiora)

Pros: It’s basically Taiora but without the triangle bullshit. Also Davis is very good for unrequited romance pairings. 

Cons: Even less interaction than Sokeru or Sokari. The age gap is still present even though it doesn’t matter as much in 02. 

Personal Ranking (5/10) I do really like Davis, and fanworks have shown that they make a cute pairing. But only as like a one sided crush thing, so their dynamic is limited. 

Sora x Yolei (Soyako)

Pros: Much like with Taisuke and Yamasuke, Sora is in that mentor to friend role for Yolei, but with slightly less of an age gap.  Also more femslash options, which are indeed rarer than the slash ones, just cause there are less girls than boys in this show, sadly. 

Cons: They’re kind of Mimra light as yolie is very similar to Mimi in terms of personality. Also while they get some moments in 02, that ends as soon as we get to other seasons. 

Personal Ranking (4/10) Meh...I’d rather just go with Mimra. 

Sora x Cody (Sori)

Pros:On the one hand they so rarely interact that you can shape their relationship post Tri into being whatever you want it to be. 

Cons: On the other hand they aren't ever seen together outside of the group and it’s only in 02 where their age difference would most matter. 

Personal Ranking (2/10) I guess there’s a certain freedom in being able to take a relationship in any direction you want to without it being pure crack or non-canon. I just don't know why you would want to when there’s so many other options out there. 

Sora x Ken (Kenora)

Pros: Uh... They both wind up in ridiculous careers that aren’t suited to them? They’re both shoved into canon relationships without proper build up for them? Wanna cause drama for drama sake with a cheating route? 

Cons: Are these two even friends? Out of all of the 02 and Adventure characters these two probably get the least amount of interaction. At best I’d call them acquaintances who just so happen to have mutual friends. 

Personal Ranking (3/10) All the same cons as all the other 02/Adventure ships but taken to the max. I only rank it higher Sori because there’s a slightly less age gap. 

Sora x Jun (Junora)

Pros: With these two you can pull a Korra/Asami and cut Matt off at the knees. If you’re pissed at how 02 handled relationships this can be cathartic.    It’s also a femslash option that winds up being very different in dynamics from the other yuri pairings in the show. 

Cons: Jun knows of Sora’s existence, and they’ve shared scenes together. Yet they’ve never talked to one another, and I’m not sure if Sora even knows who she is.  Then there’s the fact that Jun is very decisive in fandom. 

Personal Ranking (7/10) I really like Jun. I also like the potential dynamic that her and Sora can have. I also like getting back at Matt after the way he treated Jun. So this ship is a win/win for me. 

Sora x Meiko (Meiora)

Pros: Lots of interactions and shippy moments to work off of.  It’s the ‘moe’ dynamic but made gay. Triangle drama free or increased triangle drama, take your pick.  

Cons: Just like with Meichi and Meimato, how much you like this ship will depend on how much you like Meiko as a character. If you thought her annoying in Tri, you’ll no doubt be annoyed by this. 

Personal Ranking (6/10) This is like Sokari but made good? Kari as she gets older becomes more Sora like and Sora as she gets older becomes more Kari like. But Mei remains the woobie/soft girl through out, so you get the protectiveness and lesbian interaction minus the awkward age gap. 

Izzy x Mimi (Mishirou)

Pros: It’s ‘beauty and the geek’ but with an added twist. There’s some of those awkward crush moments in Tri if you like that, but mostly Izzy is very confident and assertive, just like Mimi. They tend to call out each other’s bullshit the most often. Also Mini is perhaps the second character Izzy hangs out with one on one the most besides Tai. 

Cons: The crush in Tri comes out of almost nowhere and feels like pandering. Izzy never seemed to care for Mimi in that way before and indeed was annoyed with her more often than not. Then somewhere in the middle of Tri the crush was just completely dropped altogether without any resolvement one way or the other. 

Personal Ranking (6/10) I’ve warmed up to it somewhat since Tri. There is a basis there, but it does feel very forced at times, and I don't get the overwhelming love for it. It’s merely ok at best. 

Izzy x Joe (Jyoushirou)

Pros: Geek meets Nerd!  That’s about it. If you really like these two characters then they work just about as well as any other ship in the show. There’s also the comedic elements to their interactions together to play off of.   It also nips the Izzy/Mimi/Joe triangle in the bud. 

Cons: They have more moments together than Sora and Izzy, but not more than say Joe and Matt. It’s brief comedic moments when we get them together and not many serious or deep interactions. 

Personal Ranking (5/10) Eh..There’s a foundation there to build something off of, but for whatever reason it just doesn’t gel for me.  

Izzy x T.K. (Takshirou) 

Pros: They’re closer in age then some of the other 02/Adventure characters, and they do interact often in all three seasons. 

Cons: Still most of those interactions are either plot related or group scenes. There’s not a whole lot to go off of. 

Personal Ranking (4/10) I don't get why someone would ship these two, yet I wouldn’t be outright opposed to it if they did. 

Izzy x Kari (Kokari) 

Pros: Same pros as Takshirou

Cons: Same cons as Takshirou

Personal Ranking (4/10) for the same reasons as Takshirou. 

Izzy x Davis (Daishiro) 

Pros: I guess if you like the Taishiro dynamic, but not enough to break Tai up with one of his more popular ships then this could be an option.  

Cons: It’s Taishiro lite with all the added problems that comes from shiping the 02/Adventure cast. 

Personal Ranking (4/10) For the same reasons stated as for Takshirou and Kokari.

Izzy x Yolei (Koyako) 

Pros: Of all the 02/Adventures ships this has the smallest age gap. The age difference between her and Izzy is the same a Izzy the rest of the adventure gang. As such they spend a lot of time together.  They also have a similar dynamic to Mishirou, but with the added dimension of Yolei being a nerd as well. She can keep up with Izzy’s technobabble and often assists him in his projects. 

Cons: Izzy does have a reduced role in 02 like the rest of the adventure gang, though not quite as bad as some. Meanwhile Yolei only appears in 02 except for like a cameo here and there. So while they do interact one on one on occasion it’s not a whole lot.   

Personal Ranking (7/10) To me this has all the pros of Mishirou, but none of the cons. They’re both assertive and capable of calling out each other’s bs, but they also have a deeper understanding of one another can more in common to build off of.   

Izzy x Cody (Kori) 

Pros: It’s the mentor/friend dynamic again. They have a lot in common and are seen hanging out together a lot.  

Cons: Same age difference as with the other mentor ships and like with Koyako they’re scenes are limited to only 02.  

Personal Rankings (3/10) It’s got more of a basis then the other Cody ships thus far, but that’s not saying much. 

Izzy x Ken (Kenshirou) 

Pros: Uh.. It’s assertive nerd boy meets shy nerd boy, I guess? There’s also the whole former villain thing for some added angst if you want. 

Cons: Not a whole lot of one on one interact and when we do get it it’s mostly plot exposition 

Personal Ranking (4/10) I put this on the same level as Takshirou, Kokari, and Daishiro

Izzy x Jun (Junshirou) 

Pros: It breaks all of the triangles involving both of them. They’re both fun characters. Pair the spares.  They both went on that camping trip once.  Comedy.

Cons: This ship is as close as crack as you can get without being full on crack. They’ve met, they know of each other’s existence, and they’ve been in the same scene together more than once. But they’ve never actually talked with one another on screen before. 

Personal Ranking (7/10) I just like Jun. I don’t care who you pair her with, it’s entertaining because she’s enterianing.  

Izzy x Meiko (Meishirou) 

Pros: I guess if you like both characters then you’ll like this ship just fine. Can double as a pair the spares in order to resolve the Izzy/Mimi/Joe tringle. 

Cons: Mei has less interaction with Izzy than some of the rest of the group. Also it’s dependent upon how much you like Mei as a character. 

Personal Ranking (5/10) It’s not bad, but give me Junshirou, Koyako, or Taishirou over it any day of the week.

Chapter 11: Secret Gardens Grow Forbidden Fruits

Its Monday and news of the practice test victory spread around to the few that didn’t tune in. I woke up still not at my best condition, Mimi and Jin were just as bad. I drove us to school but our bodies weren’t letting us walk properly, lucky for us, Diya put us in the school golf cart to take us to class from the parking lot. Since I have to go back and forth campus in my school day, I got a wheelchair to propel myself via Muffin 2.0.

-Homeroom before Weaponry-

“Ok class, we are going over heavy weapons today so fully suit up!” Diya announced as he panned to us “except for our trio here, you three still have to observe so you don’t have excuses when you do get better and have to do it.”

“Yes sir!” we said in unison. 

“This sucks ass! I really wanted to get hands on right away with the heavy stuff!” huffed Mimi.

“Me too! Didn’t think I’d be this fucked up after that exam!” groaned Jin as he wobbled to the back of the golf cart.

“I got the most damage, I can’t even feed myself!” I said as I sat in the wheelchair “Last night Glasses had to spoon feed me dinner and carried me around like a fucking child!”

Before Mimi and Jin could say anything, our classmate Yuka spoke up “Are you telling me that boy isn’t your new boyfriend? Girly, a boy wouldn’t just carry you around or feed you because you’re hurt, he’s in love with you!”

“Naw! he’s just being nice!” I retort “He’s been like that since my first day in that class. It’s not love, it’s just kindness!”

“Oh yea? what makes you think its JUST that?” sassed Yuka.

“Well, since living together, he hasn’t made any moves on me that have romantic notions. I gave him the opportunity to kiss me and he got close and backed out. I just think he’s gay or questioning and is confiding in me to keep his secret.” I say as we made our way to the gym.

“Hmmm that does add up, maybe you’re right” Yuka said pondering.

Weapons class was a disaster zone with a lot of injuries and sprained shoulders. The 3 of us were sort glad we didn’t get hands on right away. Class ends a bit early because of the amount of injuries, that gave me time to navigate myself to the hero wing in the wheelchair and Muffin 2.0. I was making my way down and I see some 1-B students walking toward me, I think dang I’m that early!

“Oh hello Palma-san!” said Kendo “how are you?”

“Hi! I’ve seen better days” I said rubbing my knees “I took a serious beating and my knees are giving out but I should be ready to train again later this week.”

“That’s a relief to hear! Oh, have you met my classmate here?” she said motioning to Monoma.

“I saw him at the welcome party but I don’t think I got the pleasure to meet you!”

“Humph! Well if you must know! I am Neito Monoma, we have the same copy quirk.” he said very dramatically.

“Very nice to meet you! Copy you say? how long can you sustain your copies? Can you do doubles? Do you have mastery in any?” I said intrigued by our common factor.

“Um well I sustain them for 5 minutes at a time and I didn’t really think about those other things you said.”

“Oh....then what are you training to be?”

“Well a Hero of course!”

“Doesn’t seem like you are if you don’t have mastery or can double wield.”

“THATS WHAT I’VE BEEN TELLING HIM!” exclaimed Kendo “He thinks he can make it into the A class by just degrading everyone and working out the minimum.”

“No! thats not how it works dude” I said giving Monoma a hard look “I can help train you the way I self-taught myself to hold my copies for hours at a time and how to double wield once I recover. If you really want to make it with the big boys, you gotta put on your big boy pants and make the effort.”

“I wear my pants just fine, agent!” he scoffed “but I accept this training session.”

“Great! I’m so proud of you Neito!” Kendo said excitedly “maybe you’d be able to finally be on par with me!”

“You’re embarrassing me in front of her!” said Monoma blushing at his expose of weakness. 

“Cool! I’ll be letting you know when I get back on my feet so we can get started!” I said as I scooted away “Bye bye now!”

“She’s so sweet!” said Kendo turning into their classroom “can’t believe you let your guard down like that around her.”

“Well, she was in a wheelchair! what could she do?!” he said walking to his seat “she’s also easy on the eyes so training with her would be a treat for me.”

*cut to the Hero class, before I arrive*

“I’m a bit worried about Palma-san” said Tokoyami “she was groaning trying to get ready for school and was the last one to leave the dorms.”

“I saw her get loaded on the back of the school golf cart along with her friends this morning” said Todoroki “but maybe she’s being carried here by somebody.”

“Maybe All Might?!” perked up Midoriya.

“NO YOU STUPID DEKU!” Bakugo yelled at Midoriya “she hates All Might, thats the last person she’d want to help her.”

“Maybe I should go and see if she needs assistance” said Iida standing up “she wouldn’t want to miss today’s lesson.”

As he made his way to the door, I arrive and Muffin 2.0 slid the door open.

“Hi everyone! please excuse my robot and wheels, I can’t walk very far without falling but I should be fine by Wednesday.” I said as positive as possible.

“Oh no! that won’t do! Here let me” Iida said picking me up from the wheelchair and walking me to my desk “allow me to write today’s notes so you can rest your hands too.”

“Tenya I’m not a child! I can do this on my own” I said flushed because I don’t like being carried “besides, Muffin 2.0 is programed to take notes for me and other assisted commands.”

Class starts and we go over new laws and how they’re affecting us. Class ended right on time and as I’m waiting for everyone to leave so I can wobble over to my wheelchair, Iida walks up to me.

“Please Ita, let me carry and accompany you.”

“You can accompany me but don’t carry me, I don’t like it.”

“Why not?”

“Because, I feel the breeze on my bottom and I’m pretty sure everyone got a peek at my panties and my big butt.”

Iida blushed hard realizing that I felt uncomfortable “I’m sorry! I didn’t know you’d-”

“It’s alright, I know you mean well” I said trying to comfort him “I’ll be good by Wednesday and I can start training again.”

Fast forward to Wednesday, in Recovery Girl’s office with Midnight.

“Ok Miss Palma, you can start training again. Just make sure you don’t over exert yourself.”

“Thank you Recovery Girl!”

“How did her other analysis go?” asked Midnight.

“As for her other health analysis, asthma stayed the same, cholesterol is normal, blood work is normal, stress is a factor we need to work on and same for mental health. Mindful practices are good for stress and body, please seek help when you’re in your homesick phases for a healthy outlet other than crying.”

“I know” I said softly “often I find myself in those phases when I’m alone or late night so it’s a bit hard to reach out to somebody to talk to. But I do want to cope and control my stress better.”

“We can arrange something then, if you can’t reach a peer, you can always reach me.” said Midnight putting their hand on my back.

It’s after school and I walk to the dorms, just to sort through my thoughts and when was the last time I cried. Nothing really eventful was happening when I got to my dorm so I just shut myself in for the evening to do homework. Some of the boys were scheming,

“Guys I can’t take this anymore!” said Mineta flailing his arms “aren’t you a little curious to see what is in Palma-san’s room?!”

“Just leave her be!” said Sero “what do you want see so badly that’s in her room?”

“Her secrets! All the things she’s hiding from us!” Mineta said standing on the couch “think about it! Every time she does anything, its a secret she’s been hiding from us. She has a bigger room than us and I bet she has kept all her secrets in her closet.”

“Do you know what” said Aoyama as he sat up from the floor “I’ve noticed that too! Plus she hardly makes any noise when she is in her room that it’s a bit suspicious.”

“Wait! remember when she said she has a car?” said Kirishima suddenly realizing something “she mentioned that Iida kept that secret along with other secrets, that means that Iida knows her whole secret facade.”

The boys get wide eyed and run to Iida’s room and knock on his door.

“Yes? is there something wrong?”

“We need to talk Iida-kun” said Mineta.

“About?”

“You keeping Palma-san’s secrets” said Kirishima getting in his face.

“Yes she has confided in me to keep her secrets, what of it?” 

“We need answers! What and why does she hide so many things?” confronted Aoyama “and why doesn’t she trust us?”

“Look not even I know if I have the full truth, all I know is that she’s been through a lot since landing in Japan.”

“A likely story from someone that knows all her secrets” said Mineta slyly “are these secrets the reasons why you won’t confess to her?”

“Get out of my room!”

They boys get kicked out of Iida’s room but they’re persistent to know what’s the deal with her. Fast forward to Saturday, day of some quirk training with some 1-B students.

“Ok I’m off yall! Be back by sunset!” I said as I teleport off.

Little to everyone’s knowledge, Mineta sneaks into her room.

“I have ventured into the forbidden garden” he said taking a deep sniff of the fragrant air “what secrets hide in her desk?”

He shuffles through all the stationary on the desk and sees some framed pictures of her family back home on the desk. He picks them up to take a closer look and sees a picture of her with a boy, holding hands and the boy kissing her on the forehead.

“A secret boyfriend?! No way!” he said realizing that there’s no other explanation on who this boy is. He puts the framed picture back and looks through the drawers, nothing that stands out other than everything is separated by color and there’s a lot of black clothes in the mix. He looks through the vanity and sees of professional grade make up.

“Why does she have all this? She has naturally clear skin and does eye makeup at most.” He put all the makeup back and goes to the closet. He sees the mini tv and console were moved to reveal all her coats, dresses, uniforms and swim suits. At the top there was labeled boxes that said things like Drag, Sewing, Cultural things but a box that caught his eye was one labeled ‘???’. Curious, he took the box down and opened it to find random items like beads, shells, a lighter and dried flowers. He puts it back and sees that she has both skirts and pant uniforms.

“Why does she have both?” he said as his gaze was turned to a garment bag with her name and 2 numbers on a white card in the clear pocket of the bag. “What in the world is this?” He unzipped it to find a red uniform with metal buttons, an embroidered K on the breast, the word Knights on the upper arms and black suspender pants. 

“She was training to be a knight?” he said as he zipped it back up and looked at the bottom of the closet and saw all her shoes, nothing unusual there. Some exercise equipment in a wicker basket that ranged from boxing gloves, brass knuckles and jump rope sparked some questions. Behind that was a red and white plastic box, upon opening it was a back military type hat with a metal sliver star crest on the front. On the inside of the lid it said in her handwriting, “NEVER FORGET YOUR DREAMS AND HOW HAPPY THEY MADE YOU”

“What the? How does she have all these things?” he questioned he put the hat back in the box. He moves on the night stand near the bed, there were some strange items like small canisters and ointment tubes that were in Spanish. Along with those items were pain medications, vitamins and cold medicine, nothing strange for that drawer. In the bigger bottom drawer, there were cables and chargers for different devices along with some of those said devices. As he was searching through the drawer, Kaminari notices that the door is open and Mineta was inside.

“DUDE YOU’RE ACTUALLY GOING THROUGH HER STUFF?!”

“AHH DON’T SCARE ME LIKE THAT!”

This yelling caught the attention of the other boys and came rushing in.

“What are you doing?! This is so wrong” said Sato.

“Guys lets get out before Iida-kun or Palma-san come back!” said Midoriya in fear.

“But guys I found a lot of things she’s been keeping from us!” Mineta said pointing at the framed pictures on the desk “she has a secret boyfriend!” then he pointed to the closet “and she has both the boys and girls uniform PLUS an official military uniform, hat and everything!”

The boys started to murmur to each other about these new found evidence. Mineta starts to look under her pillows to find any thing strange and found a rosary.

“Look! she has one of those Jesus necklace thingys!” he said as he held it up for everyone to see. The boys murmur even more and Mineta notices black feathers between the nightstand and the bed on the floor and how oddly similar they look like Tokoyami’s. He bend over to pick one up and sees that there was a whole bunch of flat storage containers under the bed.

“LOOK! she has more stuff under the bed!” he said as he lifted the comforter sheet that was draped just enough to hide the containers “not only that but I found some of Tokoyami-san’s feathers here on the floor.”

Everyone turned to Tokoyami and he started to sweat “Oh that’s strange hehehe what does she need with those?”

“Tokoyami-kun.... did you and Palma-senpai...” started Todoroki and Tokoyami was sweating harder “get into copy training too?”

He exhaled in relief “yes we did, I just she wanted to see if she can copy my mutation and she can.” The boys didn’t think anything else of it and peered at what Mineta was taking out. They see her weapons used for field work, live and rubber ammo, Short staffs that look custom made and arm wraps.

“I understand the weapons and ammo” started Bakugo “but the staffs and arm wraps? I’ve never seen her train or use them when we train! So why the hell does she have them!?”

Mineta puts them back and takes out a shoe box that looks like it held her pink running shoes. Upon opening, they see that it has a cards, letters and notes all filed neatly. They skim through and find some recent ones from her passing the exam and 2 confession notes.

“Oh these are all the notes and cards she’s ever received from people, how sentimental and sweet Palma-san really is!” fawned Kota.

“Some of these are from America! Look at the dates on those ones” said Kirishima pointing at a few cards and heart shaped letters “those ones date a year back!”

Mineta puts them back and pulls out a large container and inside was her feminine hygiene products and a wand massager but to the boys, they had no clue what they were. “What are these wrapped things? Gauze or something?”

“Look theres chocolates in there too! and one of those fancy back massagers!” said Sato “and... what is that? extra toothpaste?” It wasn’t toothpaste, it was body safe lube but they didn’t pay attention to it and moved on to the next container. They opened a slightly heavier one and it was filled with American, Mexican and Japanese snacks and sweets. The boys gasped at the sight of such a stash!

“Look at all these snacks! Hot Cheetos? chamoy? Skittles? JOLLY RANCHERS?! I HAVEN’T EVEN HEARD OF SOME OF THESE?!” exclaimed Mineta “how is she getting her hands on all these? She doesn’t go grocery shopping or gets packages sent here!”

“Palma-san has strange taste in snacks, most of these are spicy and salty, even the things labeled as candy!” observed Shoji as he picked up a sandia con chile lollipop.

Iida hears all the squabbling from his room and walks out to see where it’s coming from and sees that Palma’s room is wide open and peers in to his horror. “WHAT IS GOING ON HERE?!” he yelled as the boys are opening another box “I didn’t think you would try it! I’m so disappointed in you all!”

“It was Mineta!” said everyone as they pointed to him “we came in later!”

“IIDA-KUN! She’s hiding so many things that don’t make sense!” said Mineta defensively “Like who’s that kissing her in that picture! and the non-school uniform in her closet!”

“And the short staffs under her bed! And her stash of snacks! And these gauze packs! And-”

“ENOUGH! Get out of her room! It’s near sunset and she’ll be here any moment now!” 

The boys look out the window to see the sun reaching the horizon and Palma teleporting to the front of the dorms with a box. They all panicked to put everything back and fixed her bed. They all scrambled to get out of her room and Mineta and Sero were still in the room when they heard her walking toward her room and unlocked her door. Mineta hid in the closet and Sero under the bed. They see her walk in as she took off her shoes and put the box on the floor. She did a stress groan so loud it startled them, then she took off her jacket and shirt to reveal her scratches from her training session.

“oof, better put some ointment after my shower....where did I put my towel?” I said as I reached for my towel that wasn’t on it’s usual spot on the hamper. “Odd, could’ve sworn I put my towel on the hamper-” I stopped and saw that my drawers weren’t closed all the way “fuckin Mina better have washed whatever she put back this time!” I said as I closed the drawers and opened the top one to find some clean underwear and socks “wonder if I’m gonna get some comforting today~” I say giggling not knowing that the boys are watching and hearing me. I choose my black set of underwear with thigh highs and pair them with a non-suspecting pj pants and t-shirt “there! just so he has something to pull to reveal~” I say as I turn to get my bath caddy to wash up. I drop one of my body scrubs and it rolled into my closet “I don’t remember having opened that side of my closet? Or did I?”. Mineta knew it was game over when I said that, I opened my closet and see him shaking. I close the closet door and yell “ok, you have to the count of 5 to come out before I rip you a new functioning butthole” as I flipped open my switch blade.

“1.....2....5!” and I see Mineta and Sero dash out of their hiding spots “You pieces of shit WHAT ARE YOU DOING IN MY ROOM!?”

“WE CAN EXPLAIN! WE-”

“SHUT UP! GET OUT!” I yelled waving my switch blade.

They leave and I shut my door in anger. 

I showered and dressed, feeling a bit fucked up over everything and checked if anything was taken, nothing is missing so I opened my box and took out my fresh supply of feminine hygiene and to my horror, Midnight added a box of condoms with a note that said ‘nothing against the rules for having some stress-relieving fun, be safe!’. I think oh damn really? but then I look at all my options and think nah, these boys ain’t worth my virginity even if I’m getting casual with Tokoyami. I put them away and have my down time, I don’t want to face anybody because of this whole mess. I wait for everyone to go into their rooms so I can eat in peace, as I’m chopping my cucumber, Tokoyami walks in.

“Hey Ita~”

“Oh jeez you scared me!”

“Sorry! It’s just that I heard what happened”

“oh.... yea” I said stressed as I ate some cucumber.

“Are you ok?”

He’s in a loop in which he looks at her daughter dying incapable to do anything. The conversation with the yellow card man is the first piece of the puzzle that makes Jake understand that he can’t change the past and that he shouldn’t be there. He completely accept this after Sadie’s death and when he sees the post-apocalyptic present, where Harry recognizes him and tells him he’d rather had his family killed by his father. Basically everything Jake did in the past was a terrible mistake. But at least he met his soulmate, even if they shared not even 3 years together. It’s a very dramatic heartbreaking love story. Best ending scene ever: Sadie reading King’s poetry and Jake dancing with her for one last time.

To be honest, it’s really not easy to make a top fiveof Michi fics for two reasons: 1. I love way more than five Michi fics and it’dbe difficult to rank them. 2. I’ve been reading Michi fics ever since 2004.Granted I haven’t read every single one of them. And there are so many stories that I really, really loved but have been deleted in that twelve year time span. (I’m going to include those anyways, though.)

Let’s give it a try…

I’d first like to discuss a few Michi stories I reallylike that just didn’t make the cut to my top five, but still deserve a special mention:

⚘Thin Lines byHemsee Apparently this got deleted? I only found out about this yesterday, because I started checking the links on my Michi masterpost, but evidently it’s been deleted instead. Which is unfortunate because I was really eager to know how the relationship between Taichi and Mimi would further develop. Plus, Hemsee really has a clean, beautiful writing style that is so wonderful to read. I hope she creates a new multi-chaptered Michi story, though. 

⚘ All Good Things by Hemsee Luckily, her Michi oneshot is still there. It tells the story of how Mimi and Taichi’s relationship developed throughout the years since their childhood and how they gradually fell in love and got together. 

⚘ anchor me back down by dianaagronSimilarly to “All Good Things”, this story follows their relationship from the very beginning, since kindergarten, in a wonderful will they/won’t they-kind of way, to their mid-twenties. While I do love both stories (what can I say, I’m a major sucker for slow-burns), I do prefer ambd over agt. Plus how can anyone dislike a story inspired by that beautiful song by Mindy Gledhill?

⚘ Snow by hello heartbreak I recently re-read this story and loved it just as much as I did ten years ago. Ngl it hurts seeing my beloved Chosen in such pain, but this story is so touching. I also believe this is the fic that generated my headcanon that Mimi would have trouble transferring back to Japan and have trouble speaking/studying the language. Lo and behold, ten years later that headcanon actually came true in tri! 

⚘ Buttons by BenignUser This story is just so adorable! It makes me melt every time I read it. (I believe I’ve read this oneshot five times. What is my life, haha?) But really, it’s so fun, so cute and definitely worth your while. 

⚘ keep it classy by hellyeahayumichan This is a collection of four (slightly nsfw) drabbles for Michi, Sorato, Takari and Kenyako. It’s just such a great read! I really admire the subtle descriptions. Hellyeahayumichan has such a way with words. (And even though it’s not fic, I highly, highly recommend checking out her Michi art! Each and every one of her drawings are amazing. I envy her colouring skills in particular.)

⚘ Parallels by Scripturiens There are no words to describe how amazing this artwork is. And I stress the word art, because it’s really an interesting exercise in writing by putting the different pieces out of order so that all the nuances of the thoughts and the actions of the characters come together with such care. Amazing structure aside, it’s a nice piece that so wonderfully conveys emotion, especially heartbreak. I love it so much, and now I want to go re-read it….

⚘ Whispers at night by ribbonedcuriosa To this day I’m still so happy I requested a Digimon story set in the Star Wars universe from ribbonedcuriosa, because she took it and fabricated this lovely ficlet. She merged both franchises so fluently, it’s inspiring. The Michi is subtle here, but I love subtle implied pairings when it comes to the adventure genre. I honestly crave more of this story. Forever crossing my fingers for a continuation.

After contemplating long and hard over it, I now present you my TOP FIVE MICHI STORIES:

05 ⚘What Women Want by StarlillyWe start of with one of the most popular Michi fics on FF.net. And that’s understandable, because this story is so much fun! I believe I started reading it not long, just a couple of months, after it was completed. I’m even planning on re-reading after finals, so my little review here is based on my memory of when I read it late 2005. 

First there is something I have to confess (again, I’m sure I’ve stated this before, but just to be clear I’ll state it once more) that I don’t really like it when authors use the dubbed names in fics. I prefer reading Taichi Yagami over Tai Kamiya, very much so. I didn’t like it back when I started reading Michi fics in 2004/2005 and I still don’t now. That said, I won’t turn a fic down because the author chose to use the dubbed names. I do like to give it at least a try. (I sound so picky now…) And in this case: I loved the “What Women Want” film back then (still do, I rewatched it this year), so there was no way I wouldn’t read a Michi fic based on that film. And honestly, Starlilly took the premise and really made it her own while developing the relationship between Taichi and Mimi so well. 

04 ⚘ Falling’s not the problem by ribbonedcuriosaAhhhh, this story is so good! I was eagerly awaiting the next part to beta each time because it’s just so good. I absolutely love how curiosa jumped back and forth from past to present to showcase how Mimi and Taichi got to the point where they were in the beginning and how their lives further developed since then. And she did it so fluidly. Also her characterizations of both Taichi and Mimi are so well-done. 

03 ⚘Come to Me by Pied Piper + Only Alive by Pied PiperI’m sure you all knew beforehand that at least one Pied Piper story would make my top five, and here’s the first one… Sorry, first two. Okay, I know I’m cheating here by putting both these stories on the number three slot and therefore haven’t whittled my list down to five fics but six. But for the life of me, I can not chose between these two! 

I’ll talk about Come to Me first. I really love this story so much because it’s so real, so relatable. There were so many moments where I just nodded understandingly, because it was so realistic. And I talked before how I love slow-burns, well, this fic is one of the ultimate slow-burns I’ve ever read. I really enjoyed reading about their journey from how they became friends first to actually falling for each other, but being apprehensive first considering they were still dealing with their heartbreak from a previous relationship, to finally arriving at their destination together which felt so earned. It was so beautiful beyond comprehension. (PS: I still have a half-finished fanart of it lying around.)

Moving onto Only Alive now… I’m confident my good friend Sunny is going to love the fact that I included this fic into my top three. Back in the beginning of 2009 when we discovered our mutual passion for digimon as well for Michi through a meme on my livejournal (we befriended over Avatar first), she told me that this was her most favourite Michi story. Somehow I hadn’t read it then yet. (Seriously, what was wrong with me?) So, at her recommendation, I read the first chapter and I immediately wrote back to her that I was in love with this story already. There was a certain passage in the first chapter that stood out to me, because it was the perfect Michi interaction:

So he asked her to dinner, sending a written apology note down to her small cubicle several stories below his feet.

She replied almost instantly: Jackass. 

He responded: Pick you up at eight? 

She agreed: Buy me flowers, too. 

Ah, Mimi, Mimi. How he missed someone who could talk back without fear. Welcome home, he grinned to himself.

To me, Michi is so compatible, because their personalities just go well together. They’re both headstrong but they’re both also very passionate and kind. I love seeing them portrayed with the whole “love to tease you” dynamic. And that passage in OA is an excellent example of that. Honestly, Pied Piper has such an exquisite grasp on these characters. I knew then that this fic was going to be splendid, and boy, did it deliver! I read it in the course of three evenings.

I will forever love both these stories. Then again I will forever love all the stories Pied Piper wrote. Just thinking about them makes me want to re-read every single one of them (except that I sadly lost a couple over the years…) 

02 ⚘ Creative License by R.vdPI’m kind of cheating again, haha, because technically this wasn’t really Michi. Daikeru, a ship I love so much next to Michi (thanks to this fic actually), was the main pairing of this story, but Michi was definitely heavily featured. But I just loved this story so much! Unfortunately it was deleted several years ago. (Around 2007, iirc.) 

That being said, I still feel lucky to have read this story. I can’t begin to explain how amazing it was! It was so cleverly constructed. Each chapter focused on a certain aspect of the story, and with each chapter we learned more and more what happened to these characters in the past and how they’re ultimately connected to other characters. It was all intricately interwoven. The writing style was also so crisp, so poetic, so inspiring. Plus, while the Michi was very angsty, it was very hot. I still haven’t read a nsfw Michi that came close to their scenes in this story. 

01 ⚘ My Captain’s Lady by Pied PiperIs there any surprise that MCL is my ultimate favourite? 

The truth is: This isn’t just my favourite Michi fic. This isn’t even just my favourite Digimon fic. This is my ultimate favourite fic ever.

It was the very first fic that got me so hooked. I started reading MCL after chapter fifteen or so (don’t remember the exact chapter anymore, since y’know, it was eleven years ago) and kept checking for the next update. It was really bad with the final chapter, because it was New Year’s Eve and I continuously pressed refresh so eagerly awaiting the update and then when it was finally there I read it between the different courses of dinner. 

I loved it so much that I was raving about it non-stop to my best friend that she, who hadn’t watched a single episode of digimon, even wanted to read it. So I lend her my binder of MCL and I like that she texted me her thoughts a few times. I kept those texts, even after ten years, until I had to buy a new phone last summer. 

Sentimental experiences aside, the story itself is just so epic. It had everything: an intriguing plot, an amazing build-up, lots of suspense and action, and of course a compelling romance between Taichi and Mimi. Once again, the journey of the characters and their relationship was so moving and so captivating. And I loved every step of the way.

Survivors Teaching Students

I AM A FACE OF OVARIAN CANCER

My name is Carol Rodman and I’m a 69 year old retired nurse, mother of 2 and Mimi of 4. I’m also a survivor of Stage 2B breast cancer in 2003 and Stage 3C ovarian cancer in 2006 and 2010.

My cancer story began in 1977 when my sister was diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer. She died of ovarian cancer at 37 when her kids were 15, 11 and 6. JoAnn was a wild woman who, on the day I drove her to hospice, plowed through deep snow in her station wagon into town to buy gifts for her family.

Cancer appeared again 20 years later in 1997 when my 80 yo mother had a mastectomy for late stage breast cancer. So 9 years later when my gynecologist found a lump in my right breast I wasn’t too surprised given my family history.

My treatment was a lumpectomy, chemo and radiation. Genetic testing showed an “unknown variant” which meant there was a mutation but couldn’t be specifically identified. Options were having bilateral mastectomies and/or a hysterectomy but I was working full-time, had a new granddaughter and frankly it got put on the back burner. If I knew then what I know now .. but we can’t go backwards.

Only 2 years later my routine colonoscopy and gyn exam were due but were postponed because my mother was in failing health. She passed away and the exams were rescheduled.

The gyn exam was negative but just a few weeks later I had belly pain, felt full quickly, was exhausted and had increased waist size. However, I attributed it to stress eating over the holidays and when mom died. A friend told me that her mom was having belly pain and thought it might be colon or ovarian cancer. I did what every good nurse or nursing student or medical student did - I GOOGLED my symptoms. It sure sounded like ovarian cancer given my family history. When I told my husband John, Director of Pharmacy and scientist at a  children’s research hospital in Memphis, he said “you don’t have ovarian cancer” but he didn’t sound very convincing. Later I found mounds of articles proving that he WAS thinking the same thing.

The colonoscopy was scheduled for later in the month but I called and INSISTED on an exam before the procedure. The gastroenterologist came in, felt my belly and left without saying a word. I waited for what seemed like an eternity so I went into the hall, clutching my paper gown and asked to see him. When he returned he said felt a large mass and scheduled a CT scan. Later he said that if the procedure had been done, the bowel could have been perforated.

The phone rang 3 days later and he said the scan showed widespread late stage ovarian cancer. We were stunned, started to cry when my 4 yo granddaughter said “Mimi, come color with me and you’ll feel better.” She remains a champion for me!

We took the CT scan to the clinic where I’d been treated for breast cancer for had lab work and a consult with a gyn-onc surgeon. When I heard her name, Dr. Linda Smiley, I knew I was in good hands. The plan was for chemo to shrink the tumor, followed by a hysterectomy and placement of a catheter to deliver chemo into my belly. By week’s end I’d had needle biopsy showing Stage 3C adenocarcinoma, a portacath inserted and got my first dose of chemo. Because John was a researcher he was able to personalize the dose which I had every 2 weeks rather than every 3 so we could “give it our best shot”. I’m now convinced that he saved my life.

After finishing pre-op chemo, a CT scan showed that the football sized mass had shrunk dramatically. In early April I had a total debulking hysterectomy, removal of the omentum, mesentery and several malignant lesions. During surgery my church group had 40 people that prayed continuously in the hospital chapel. Dr. Smiley was extremely optimistic because she saw very little evidence of disease. The next best news that day was the birth of Abigail Carol, granddaughter of my late sister and named after me! 3 days later when Dr. Smiley walked in I was completely dressed and she said “I guess you’re going home today.”

My recovery went well and 3 weeks later I had the first chemo into my belly and intravenously. It went well but I felt like the Michelin guy with 2 liters of fluid in my abdominal cavity. One night I told John that I wasn’t afraid to die. He said “we all die but living is the hard part.”  

A few days later he was ready to go to work but said he didn’t feel well. He rested for a bit and said “see you later.” About an hour later a nursing supervisor where he worked called to say he’d been found in full cardiac arrest.

They took him to the medical center and I called the kids to say he’d been taken there. When I arrived I could tell by everyone’s  faces that John had died. The hardest thing I’ve ever done was to call the kids while touching his chest that say that their Daddy had died.

Because chemo was time-sensitive and I was determined to “give it our best shot”, I had the second round 2 days later. By week’s end we’d had 2 memorial services, one where I gave the eulogy.

In there next 2 months between chemo I took 2 trips that John and I had been planned. I took my son on the sailing trip to the British Virgin Islands and my daughter on a trip to Barcelona for a conference where John was honored.

After completing 5 of 6 chemo with very few side effects “living the hard part” began. Because I’d lost my husband, my job and my will to live, I contemplated suicide and was hospitalized. With intense therapy, medication and support from my family, friends and faith community I not only survived but thrived!

Two years later I had a more specific genetic test. One night as I was sipping wine with friends, the phone rang and the genetic counselor called to say that I had the BRCA1 mutation. The next call was from the breast surgeon and I asked what was next. He strongly advise bilateral mastectomies. By the way, my brother and my sister’s kids all have the mutation but my kids don’t.

At my pre-exam the mammographer drew happy faces on my boobs. When the surgeon came in he said “I see Mary Ann has been here.” Gotta find laughs where you can!

The day before surgery we had a “Life is Good” party complete with pony rids for the kids, a friend videotaping and a BOOB cake! I left the hospital only 23 hours after surgery and because I was unsure of my prognosis I chose NOT to have reconstruction. Instead I went on a Breast Cancer Survivor cruise where I parasailed and zip-lined instead!

Only a year later a routine CT scan showed a tumor by the aorta. Because of the position of the lesion I was referred to a New York City hospital. Despite it being a metastatic lesion the surgeon was very optimistic and I hugged him for giving me HOPE. He offered surgery by laparoscope or incision and I chose incision so he could “check under the hood”. I heard later at a conference that he has the best hands for finding cancer.

Only 1 of the 9 lesions was malignant and I returned home for chemo. Once more we had a “Life is Good” party and I went skydiving! One of my surgeons said “We’re trying to keep you alive and you jump out of a perfectly good airplane.” My bucket list now includes tandem hang gliding at Torrey Pines!

Because ovarian cancer is a chronic diseases like diabetes, I was followed every 6 months with CA125s and CT scans. Now that I’m 6 years out from my recurrence I’m considered a long term survivor my testing is yearly.

One chemo drug caused hearing loss so I wear hearing aids. Another caused peripheral neuropathy but I soothe the pain with a Snickers Blizzard - eaten, worn. Plus I’ve lost my hair 3 times. Side effects are a nuisance but they mean that the chemo worked! I’m alive and hopeful that I’ll stay in remission of many years to enjoy the kids and their spouses, my grands and friends.

Two more things — please get family histories and be your own best advocate in everything, not just health concerns.  If a doctor won’t listen to you, find one who will. One lady listened to her body and challenged a doctor to “prove to me that I DON”T have ovarian cancer” - guess what? She was right.. she DID have it.

My daughter’s family with 3 grands lives here in San Diego and my son’s family with 1 grand lives in VA. They all make this crazy journey worthwhile!

My hope for you is that we’ve put faces to this disease, that you’ll remember our stories and what you’ve learned today. If that happens, we’ve done our job and feel you’ll be even better healthcare providers.
