As I'm currently indexing this blog or, rather, meta-tagging posts in my new version of it on the Blogger website (I will post proper link as soon as it's finished), I decided to compile a list of all the women who feature (or receive a mention however fleetingly) within it. “Do you ever wish you had a mate?” she asked him, her brow wrinkled in curiosity.
“I’ve known who she is for some time,” Fenrir admitted quietly after a moments silence. “Just need to wait for the right moment to tell her is all.”
“When do you think you’ll tell her?” Hermione asked, a note of jealousy in her voice, something which surprised and amused Fenrir.
“When I think she’d be happy to hear it,” Fenrir told her with a small smile, all the while wondering if the note of jealousy he detected in her voice was a good or bad thing.

It’s shot from the very front row of the stalls at the side so, although this causes a lot of problems for the brave person who filmed it, we DO get many nice close-ups and a chance to see the show from quite an unusual angle at times! Very clear sound throughout.

This Pride season marks 50 years since Parliament first voted to start legalising homosexuality. Across the UK, Prides will be marching with a message of hope, acceptance, activism and love. Ahead of the London parade on 8th July, Pride in London and WCRS have launched a multi-media campaign, celebrating love in all its forms.
The ‘Love Happens Here’ campaign will play out in two phases; ‘Hate’ and ‘Love’. The first phase draws attention to the rising problem of anti-LGBT+ hate crime in the London with Guerrilla-style fly-postering across the city, a covert take-over of Wi-Fi networks, statistic led taxi-tops and an event, which all tell stories aimed to raise awareness of the ongoing prevalence of prejudice.
On the 23rd June, the second ‘Love’ phase of the campaign will launch, which sees the stories of hate crime replaced with ones of love, showing London that ‘Love Happens Here’.

Everybody’s Fine (2009)
Drama |
Everybody’s Fine is a American drama film written and directed by Kirk Jones, and starring Robert De Niro, Drew Barrymore, Sam Rockwell and Kate Beckinsale. It is a remake of Giuseppe Tornatore’s Italian film Everybody’s Fine.
Frank Goode, a recently widowed retiree, is getting ready for his children to come visit him. One by one though, each of his children calls to cancel on him at the last minute. Feeling a bit down by the rejections, Frank decides to head out on a cross-country trip, visiting each of his kids.
Despite warnings from his doctor, Frank takes a train to New York City, to see one of his sons, David. David does not appear to be home and never shows up so Frank leaves him a card and leaves town to see his other children. While he is waiting for David, he sees one of David’s paintings in a nearby art gallery window.
His next visit is to daughter Amy in Chicago, who tells him it is a bad time to visit. She had turned down her father’s earlier invitation to visit, saying that her son Jack was sick. However, once he gets to Amy’s house, Frank realizes Jack was not sick and Amy was just making up an excuse. Frank hits a few golf balls with Jack in the yard of their impressive suburban home. Dinner is uncomfortable with tension between Jack and his father. The next morning, Frank accompanies Amy to her fancy downtown office and hears her agency’s pitch for a TV ad. She takes him to the train station to visit his son Robert in Denver. While waiting, Amy introduces her father to a male co-worker.

While Josh Groban is front and center in Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812, the most memorable of several memorable moments in the show for me was an (almost) private one. A member of the ensemble, dressed like a punk rock, 19th century aristocratic slut, handed me a plastic Russian egg with pellets inside so that I could use it as a castanet in the next song.

Then She Fell
“Immersive theater” has come to mean something separate from the dictionary definition of the word “immersive” – in much the same way that phrases Absurdist Theater and Abstract Expressionism took on new meanings. As in those earlier terms, immersive theater describes an art movement – and a theater moment.
That moment has existed in New York since 2011, when Punchdrunk Theater launched its version of “Macbeth,” entitled “Sleep No More”  as if retold by Alfred Hitchcock and Isadora Duncan, in a formerly abandoned club in Chelsea renamed the McKittrick Hotel.
“Sleep No More” is still running, as is “Then She Fell,” Third Rail Projects’ take on Lewis Carroll and Alice in Wonderland, which debuted the following year.
Neither company initially attached the phrase “immersive theater” to their shows, nor do they prefer to label them that now  – which is ironic, considering how many companies now insist on calling their shows “immersive theater”  even when they aren’t really.
Or at least they don’t fit my definition.
Almost four years ago, in HowlRound, I listed the six elements that defined the best of immersive theater that I had seen by then. I still find these a useful guide to my own theatergoing, and, given several new shows I’ve seen of late, it feels the right time to present them again here, updated a few more recent examples.
Immersive theater creates a physical environment that differs from a traditional theater where audiences sit in seats and watch a show unfurl on a proscenium stage with a curtain.
I loved the succinct and spontaneous definition of immersive theater provided by a young Brazilian-American man waiting with the rest of the crowd to be let inside Inside the Wild Heart . a stage adaptation of the book by Clare Lispector, when he noticed that the venue in Williamsburg was called Immersive Gallery.
“Oh no,” he said, “we’re going to have to stand.”
That more or less nails it, although you do sometimes get to sit.
It’s important to note that “immersive theater” is not a synonym for “site-specific, theater.”  Some immersive shows have taken place in actual theaters, but in such cases, the theaters have been radically redesigned. That was the case, for example, with KPOP, which turned the theaters of the  performance art complex A.R.T./New York into a South Korean music factory.
The best-known example may be “Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812”, Dave Malloy’s musical based on a sliver of Tolstoy’s War and Peace, which began in 2012 in Ars Nova, a theater transformed into a nineteenth century Russian tearoom. It moved into its own space, called Kazino, a “temporary structure,” resembling a circus tent, set up in the chi-chi Meatpacking District, and later reassembled on an empty lot in the theater district. But it ended up on Broadway, set designer Mimi Lien transforming the Imperial Theater as much as physically possible. The (aptly named) Imperial was not just decorated to look like a Russian tearoom, with glittering chandeliers, oil paintings in gilded frames set against red velour wallpaper, and a lobby turned into a hallway for an underground nightclub, plastered with posters in Russian. The auditorium itself was reconfigured so that there was no big stage, but rather many little ones criss-crossing through the audience. There were ramps built up into the balcony. Some seats were chairs  around cabaret tables.  This set-up allowed for the performers, dressed sumptuously and mischievously in Paloma Young’s punk aristocratic costumes, to dance, and sing, and play instruments throughout the auditorium — and, above all, to interact directly with members of the audience.
Immersive theater indeed has become such a popular trend that new theater buildings are being designed to reinvent their space for each show.
But it’s still true that most immersive theater takes place in some unusual venues. Two memorable recent, very different examples: The Mile Long Opera took place along the entire length of the High Line; The End of the World Bar and Bathtub takes place in your bathroom; you hire the company to perform in your bathtub.
Immersive theater tends to stimulate all five senses—sight and sound, as with conventional theatre pieces, but also touch, and frequently taste and even smell.
Many of the immersive shows have constant eerie underscoring that seems more designed to unnerve than enchant. Most serve drinks. Some serve food. This Is Not A Theatre Company’s Cafe Play took place in an actual cafe and included a meal, although it would be very hard to call it dinner theater; one of the actors portrayed a roach.
“Inside The Wild Heart” marked the “world premiere” of the Scent-O-Scope, an odd looking contraption that delivered ten different scents. I passed it by as a text was projected above it about a woman who explains why she began to steal roses: “I wanted to sniff it until I felt my vision go dark from such heavy perfume.” Nearby, there was a large round bed covered by red roses.  I wish I could state with certainty that what I smelled from the Scent-O-Scope was a red rose.
Immersive theater doubles as an art installation and hands-on museum
The designers pay extensive attention to details, especially what might in more conventional theater be called props, but here function as artifacts, providing an opportunity for the audience members to explore the world. There are photographs on the wall, postcards and period magazines on tables, but some of the shows go much further. In Then She Fell, each audience member is handed a set of keys, with the implicit directive to open drawers and boxes and cupboards and rifle through the letters and postcards that illuminate Lewis Carroll’s work and his relationships.
In “The Jungle,” which was performed at St. Ann’s Warehouse in 2018 (and is scheduled for an encore run in April, 2020) Miriam Buether’s set re-creates the four-star Afghan restaurant that was at a refugee  camp in Calais, France. Food was for sale during intermission just outside the restaurant, inside a geodesic dome lined with photographs and signs that tried to re-create the atmosphere of the camp, whose residents named it the Jungle. One sign was entitled “Workshops Today,” next to little cardboard clocks with the various times: “Kung Fu with Yasin. Theatre with Kneehigh. Music with Mohamed.
This element is often given short-shrift in less meticulous shows claiming to be immersive. (To be fair, the shows that take place entirely at one or more real-life locations – such as Waterwell’s The Courtroom, or Woodshed Collective’s remarkable Empire Travel Agency make the world into their museum, and so need not design any further
Immersive theater makes individual audience members feel as if they have had a uniquely personal experience, that they are not just part of the crowd.
This can be achieved in a variety of ways. In Sleep No More, you are on your own to explore some ninety rooms in any order you see fit and for as little or as long as you want (up to a total of three hours)—giving the theatregoers the sense that they are in charge (even though, in fact, we must adhere to some rigid rules—for example keeping on that itchy mask). In Then She Fell, performers choose for you which rooms you will visit, in what order, and for what duration. But there are only fifteen theatregoers attending each performance, and each is most often alone in a room, or with just one or two other audience members. As a result, the experience feels custom-made.
Often in immersive shows, a single performer pairs off with a single theatergoer for an encounter. This can be a performance for an audience of one, or the theatergoer can be volunteered as a character in the plot, or asked to participate in some other way. Lewis Carroll asked me to dictate a letter to Alice asking her to respond finally to his entreaties.
At the same time, immersive productions often emphasize social interactions, either through directed tasks in small groups, or by fostering a looser party atmosphere.
In “The Grand Paradise,”  a Third Rail Projects show that transformed a Bushwick warehouse into a tropical resort,  one cast member gathered four of us together to teach us how to tie nautical knots, exactly as a recreation counselor might in a resort. The first activity in The Alving Estate was an elaborate game of Black Jack, in which we are asked to write down a secret on a piece of paper and use that to bet on the game. The winner of the hand collected all the secrets. The mere fact that alcohol is served at these shows signals that what we’ve paid for is not just art, but a party.
The most successful immersive theater has a story to tell—and gives respect to storytelling
I’ve gone back and forth in my view of this element over the years. It’s true that many of these shows don’t even include dialogue, substituting mute and often-violent pas de deux, or tableaux vivant. The arbitrary or random order in which an individual theatergoer’s experience unfolds also suggests that plot is not a priority. But the longest lasting immersive shows in New York, Sleep No More and Then She Fell, both offer stories that theatergoers already know—Macbeth and Alice in Wonderland. Our prior knowledge enables us to fit the disparate pieces into a coherent story, through some detective work that feels part of these shows’ appeal.
Not all of the best of immersive theater have all six elements, and not all shows that attempt all six elements are the best immersive theater. But in my experience, the most satisfying theater that calls itself immersive is driven by the creative team’s  respect for the form, rather than the marketing department’s hype to be hip.
What is immersive theater? The six elements that define it at its best “Immersive theater” has come to mean something separate from the dictionary definition of the word “immersive” – in much the same way that phrases Absurdist Theater and Abstract Expressionism took on new meanings.

Thumbnails Special Edition: Cannes 2018
In addition to our full table of contents, we are highlighting some of our coverage from the 2018 Cannes Film Festival in this special edition of Thumbnails. Included below are daily dispatches by Barbara Scharres and Ben Kenigsberg as well as video dispatches by Chaz Ebert.
1.
vimeo
Cannes 2018 with Chaz Ebert, Segment 5 from The Mint on Vimeo.
"Capharnaüm, The First of Many and More": Chaz Ebert's fifth video dispatch from Cannes 2018 features interviews with filmmakers Pamela Guest and Pamela Green, producer Matthew Helderman, production coordinator and Ebert Fellow Sue-Ellen Chitunya and Gary Novak, Dean of DePaul University’s School of Cinematic Arts.
“While it’s wonderful to see a female director like Nadine Labaki succeed so admirably here in Cannes, the industry still has a long way to go towards equality as evidenced by the protests earlier in the festival calling for 50/50 by 2020: Equal representation of women by the year 2020. And the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements remain at the forefront of conversation here on the Croisette. One woman active in that movement is talented actress and casting director, Pamela Guest. She was raped in the 1970’s and only realized many years later that the rapist was Oscar winning composer and filmmaker Joseph Brooks who ironically composed the song ‘You Light Up My Life.’ Guest was brave enough to make a short film about her ordeal called ‘The First of Many.’ Her role is played, and co-directed, by her daughter Elizabeth. It’s a powerful statement that really felt like a punch to the gut when I watched it.Other women filmmakers are on display here in Cannes as well. A documentary about the mother of cinema called ‘Be Natural’ and directed by Pamela Green played in Cannes Classics. It tells the forgotten story of Alice Guy Blaché, a woman who directed over a thousand films in the early silent era, and even pioneered techniques like color tinting and synchronized sound, and working with an all black cast. Despite her vast contributions to the history of film, and even owning her own movie studio, she’s been largely left out of cinema history. This film aims to change that.”
2.
"Edward Lachman, an honoree at the festival, discusses the past and future of cinematography": In conversation with Ben Kenigsberg.
“Already a recent honoree of the American Society of Cinematographers and the Telluride Film Festival, the cinematographer Edward Lachman (‘Wonderstruck,’ ‘Carol’) received a tribute ceremony at Cannes on Friday. ‘I’m waiting for the afterlife achievement award,’ he joked when we met on Friday at a beachfront pavilion hours before the event. It may not have been his first tribute, but cinematographer, 72, clad in his trademark black hat, showed no signs of tiring when it came to sharing thoughts on his craft or his teachers, who go beyond the world of cinematography. He began with the photographer Robert Frank. He was ‘the first image maker that got me interested in images,’ Lachman said. ‘To look at 'The Americans,' I realized that here were documented images that he imbued with a certain subjectivity and poetics, in the language and also the visual metaphors and how he represented what he saw.’ His other formative influences included the writer Dwight Macdonald, with whom he took a course at Harvard, and Vittorio De Sica's movie ‘Umberto D.,’ which taught him how a film could be constructed primarily with images, not sound.”

"'The House That Jack Built,' 'At War,' 'Asako I & II'": Barbara Scharres reviews three selections at Cannes including the latest from Lars von Trier.
“For three-quarters of the running time, ‘The House That Jack Built’ is a clunky rambling film with a homemade look. The whole point seems to be von Trier’s relish of the details of the grisly murders of women, an exercise in pure savagery, with Jack later storing up the corpses in a walk-in freezer and sometimes posing them for photos. Inserted into the narrative of the murderer’s adventures in gratuitous violence are ponderous asides in the form of art reproductions, animation, diagrams, and text, as if reflecting upon Jack’s malformed psyche within the greater scope of art, religion, and world history. There’s even a YouTube clip of pianist Glenn Gould playing Bach like a madman. Von Trier increasingly aims for the metaphysical, but at its center his film contains one small and sniveling statement, an ironic aggrieved cry that cuts through the bogus intellectualism of ‘The House That Jack Built’ to reveal the glaring foundation of this film. After verbally abusing a buxom blonde, he mutilates and kills her, whining to Verge, ‘Why is it always the man’s fault? Women are always victims … to be born male is to be born guilty.’ ‘Why are they [women] always so stupid?’ commiserates Verge.”

"Hirokazu Kore-Eda wins Palme d'Or; Gilliam's Man Who Killed Don Quixote Film Closes the Fest": As reported by Ben Kenigsberg.
“Hirokazu Kore-eda won the Palme d'Or at the 71st Cannes Film Festival for ‘Shoplifters,’ which observes the dynamics of a peculiar Japanese family, while Spike Lee won the second-place Grand Jury Prize for ‘BlacKkKlansman,’ the dramatized true story of an African-American police officer in Colorado Springs who infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan. Both awards were milestones, in their ways: This was Cannes regular Kore-eda's first Palme and Japan's first since ‘The Eel’ in 1997. Lee, returning to competition for the first time since ‘Jungle Fever’ in 1991, had been infamously passed over by the awards jury for ‘Do the Right Thing’ in 1989. Lee accepted the prize on ‘behalf of the people’s republic of Brooklyn, New York.’ But the moment of the evening was clearly Asia Argento's speech before the presentation of the Best Actress award. She acknowledged the Harvey Weinstein scandal that has hovered over the festival. ‘In 1997, I was raped by Harvey Weinstein here at Cannes,’ Argento said at the ceremony, reiterating what she had told The New Yorker in a report published last fall. ‘I was 21 years old. This festival was his hunting ground. I want to make a prediction: Harvey Weinstein will never be welcomed here ever again.’ She said that sitting among the audience members were others who had not been held accountable for their conduct against women.”
5.
"Palme des Whiskers": Barbara Scharres presents her amusing coverage of the best cat performances from Cannes 2018.
“The champion bull of ‘3 Faces’ has pledged to block the street with his considerable bulk if there are any threats. It’s a veritable Peaceable Kingdom of inter-species cooperation. My own Miss Kitty, Mistress of Ceremonies, takes the precaution of inspecting the lineup, especially relishing the sight of the honor guard of French Army cats with their titanium-tipped claws and jaunty berets. Before the official fun begins, some catfights are assured. Let’s sneak into the jury’s inner sanctum as quiet as mice, and find out what’s happening. Mimi, last year’s Palme des Whiskers winner, and the venerable feline French New Wave star of Agnes Varda’s ‘Faces Places,’ is ready to defend herself with a threatening paw, as pointy-faced Lola, screeches, ‘I’m here to support #MeToo, and you said it was going to be a majority-female jury, like that other one headed by Cat Blanchett.’ ‘That’s Cate, you birdbrain,’ smirks slinky Siamese Nico, ‘And I know on the best authority that it’s a pinky-skin human, not a cat, because my butler John Powers, who I let moonlight at Vogue, told me.’”

Note
Hi there! I am SO excited about your upcoming Fenrir/Hermione story and I was just wondering if you had any favorite fics of this pairing while I patiently wait to devour the amazingness that you will undoubtedly serve us with your new WIPs? I hope this is okay to ask, I'm really bad at fandom manners if you will but I adore your writing and trust your taste so I thought I'd give it a shot :)
Hello lovely Anon, of course it is okay for you to ask! (I am sure you have nothing less than perfect manners).
In the run up to planning my own story, I think I have read every Fenrir x Hermione out there :)
These are in no particular order of preference and they are all very different.
Instincts by Reveraine [Complete]
This fic begins at the start of the Horcrux hunt and their relationship goes through a whole range of stages, it includes a really thorough explanation of pack dynamics and a whole heap of side characters that are super engaging.
Obliquity by Reveraine [WIP]
New fic by the author above. In this fic Hermione is bitten as a young Hogwarts student and the dynamic between the two is, at present, more mentor oriented. Only a few chapters in but already loving it.
Hunted by LameBicycle98 [Complete]
In the best possible way, I don’t even know what to say about this one. It’s dark and honestly a little hard to read in the beginning because of the themes but its mesmerisingly beautiful in a way that stayed with my long after I had finished it.
Over the Hills and Far Away by @nauticalparamour [WIP]
A muggle AU is a hard thing to take on and this one is done unbelievably well. The story focuses on Fenrir as a leader of a biker gang and Hermione as a reluctant barmaid. It’s fluffy in places with dark suspense that leaks into the frame at every turn. Plus, the weaving of canon characters into the AU plot is masterful.
Hey There Little Red by @nauticalparamour [Complete]
Super fun muggle AU fic in a university setting. Plays with the fairytale interpretation of the werewolf theme (as the title would suggest). Real laugh out loud moments in this sexy story.
Self Reliance by Chaco [WIP]
This is a dark fic. The author posts notes in each new chapter as to how ‘game of thrones ish’ it will be. No shortage of blood and gore. Some super clever ideas in this one that makes you look at canon in a whole new way.
Marked and Running from Destiny by @ash-castle [Complete]
Two beautiful one-shots with rich imagery that just draws you right in.
Full Moon Fire by Lady Mimi Alice de Yorke [Complete]
A delightfully fluffy one-shot that just makes me grin.
> I am sure there are hundreds more, but these were the ones I could think of off the top of my head.
>> Thank you so much for your lovely comments! My Fenrir x Hermione is going to be in the style of a long one-shot (currently about 11k), I’m nearly done with it so it should be up next week.

3.
4.
