Day 50 – Milwaukee - Glenview, IL Suprise Lunch? I Think so!



We woke up rested and ready to head towards Chicago. Everybody was happy after getting a good nights rest at the Country Inn and our teeth were nice and clean thanks to the oral hygiene kits provided by the one and only Mr. Tyler Quinn.

As we prepared to leave, our crew chief told us to be ready for a surprise during the ride and it would be in our best interest to move fast. The ride itself was nothing out of the ordinary; there was corn, construction, corn, a few pot holes, and some more corn. It was the type of ride you would expect when traveling in the Midwest.

As the miles ticked away we found ourselves zigzagging through a neighborhood, which is not typical for us. To our delight, we arrived at the house of one our teammates, Peter Bassick. The Bassick family set us up with showers, relaxation time, and a delicious Mexican lunch.  

After lunch we racked to the Glenview YMCA. We dropped off our luggage/bikes and drove to our friendship visit. Rhonda Penzell had set up an event for people with disabilities in the Glenview community called the Big Blast. To say the least, it was a big blast! The clients enjoyed everything from water balloons, bbq, baseball, balloon animals, to a visit from Ronald McDonald.

After all was said and done at the Big Bang, we went back the YMCA. We split up into groups to run our errands for the night. I didn’t have anything urgent to do so I stuck behind with a few other folks. The evening continued and boredom set in, a few of us who had never been to Chicago before decided to take a van to Lake Michigan just for the hell of it. Saying yes to that quick trip was one of my best decisions of JOH. It was pouring rain and lightening was striking every two minutes. We found the perfect lake front park and watched the lightning illuminate the Chicago skyline.
