Day 14 - Past Life
Miller wondered what the point of dreaming of a past life was, if it was just as bad as the present.
His limbs burned. A thousand tiny pin pricks pierced his flesh. Heat coursed through his body, enflaming his throat and convulsing behind his eyes. Then the cold began, a rigid, freezing cold that spread from his toes and put his teeth on edge.
Radiation.
He could vaguely hear the big guy - Amos, he thought he’d heard Holden call him - muttering by his side. He was semi-aware of the med cuff being fitted to his arm, alongside the array of red symbols that decorated it. Those couldn’t be good.
He knew now, of course, that he wasn’t going to die. But for a time, he’d been certain of it.
His past life hadn’t been overly pleasant. He knew when most people thought of the phrase they were referring to some quasi-religious justification for self-preservation.
Miller, on the other hand, knew his past life was on Ceres. He had been on Eros less than 24 hours, but something deep inside him recognised that those 24 hours were a kind of turning point.
His small apartment on Ceres would be the last home he would have. Star Helix his last job. Yet, there was nothing he regretted about that past life. His rooms were dark, damp - and the damn shower… Well, Ceres never had enough water except where you didn’t want it. He’d spent too much time around dead bodies, he didn’t want his own to end mulched and feeding some Earther garden. He’d liked being a detective, he admitted, but only when he was good at it. Only in those moments when the dots connected, and he felt like throwing his hat into the air.
Damn, he missed that hat.
Even so, his past life was not worth regretting. Without following that path, he would never have lived to see the stars. He would have spent a few more years with Star Helix. Trained Havelock so he wasn’t quite so incompetent. Got frustrated with the OPA, got beaten up by their thugs a few more times. Attempted to drown his sorrows in drink. Ended his life floating out of an airlock or drunk on his apartment floor.
His past life was in the past. The present wasn’t much better, he admitted, but it was something. The crew of the Roci seemed to know what they were doing, and hopefully they would see him on his way. Give him a clue where he should head next, if they were so kind.
Point him in the right direction.
Yes, he thought, through the pain and blood and whatever the hell Amos was trying to say to him.
There must be some future life.

I know the expanse fandom isn’t super big on tumblr, but the lack of Detective Josephus Miller thirst is astounding. You’re telling me tumblr dot com, lover of the saddest and wettest meow meows you’ve ever seen, isn’t losing their fucking minds over a washed up, recently divorced sci fi noir cop who’s falling in love with the (possibly) dead girl he’s been hired to track down until he gets roped into saving the universe between bouts of staring at her photo with big wet cow eyes isn’t sending all yall into hysterics??? Pathetic.

An hour later, his blood warm with drink, he heated up a bowl of real rice and fake beans—yeast and fungus could mimic anything if you had enough whiskey first—opened the door of his hole, and ate dinner looking out at the traffic gently curving by. [...] The blue ceiling glowed in its reflected light, unchanging, static, reassuring. A sparrow fluttered down the tunnel, hovering in a way that Havelock assured him they couldn't on Earth. Miller threw it a fake bean.

Ok so the Expanse is a fantastic show that can get dark and serious and intriguing – a high-concept sci fi that absolutely thrills the viewer. It's about lots of things, there are so many amazing, rounded characters with awesome arcs.
But also it's about a guy in one of the douchiest hats I've ever seen annoying the bejeezus out of everyone in space in the pursuit of a rebellious billionaire's daughter who he's pathetically in love with despite never having met her. And his name is Josephus.

I've been watching the Expanse for the first time over the last couple of weeks. Just finished episode three of season six and holy shit, it's so good. Easily one of the best sci-fi series ever produced. I'm just disappointed they didn't do the last three books and truncated the sixth season. One of this show's strengths was its pacing and how it was able to tell a compelling story while also doing incredibly deep and brilliant worldbuilding.
The Belter society is amazing, especially the Belter Creole they speak. Which was invented and fleshed out specifically for this show. I love how it parallels the poor and working class here in our world and the exploitation they face. It's brilliant how they give us so many different versions of what their fight for recognition and independence looks like, each with its own unique benefits and flaws.
I think Camina Drummer is my favorite character. I love her strength and fierce loyalty. Her and Naomi definitely dated while she was on the Behemoth. Amos is another fave. I get really strong autistic vibes from him, but a lot of it could also be how he deals with the immense trauma from his childhood. Which is also one of the most interesting and heartbreaking backstories in the show.
There's so much more I could get into to that makes it so great. Like everything that is Chrisjen Avasarala. Or Bobbie's escape on Earth and how it showed Earth wasn't all rich people day drinking. Or the freaking protomolecule! But I think I've rambled enough. lol

Day 7 - Old Wounds
There was a lot of time to think in space.
He knew that Ceres was space, of course, but it didn’t feel quite the same. There was a liveliness to the station. Walking through Ceres, Miller was bombarded with scents, sounds, movement. There was the spices of the markets, heavy perfumes exuding from the cheap brothels, children and pickpockets alike weaving between the crowds and fleeing Star Helix. Between the OPA thugs and Dawes’ men on the docks, there had been no time to think. Even grudgingly putting up with Havelock and explaining every little difference about the Belt had taken up rather too many thoughts, for what it was worth.
Out on the transporter though, Miller was struck by the emptiness. The expanse of space seemed to inspire his brain. He hadn’t thought so much in years.
He supposed it was the fault of the Mormon - bringing up old wounds, God, life beyond this woeful station.
The Mormon couldn’t just accept that life ended with the disintegrator. Had to go and force Miller to sit and think about what happened next.
He might have believed it all once. When his mind burned so badly that only the drink could stop the pull towards the nearest airlock. Now though, the only way of combatting those old wounds was to get to her.
Julie Mao.
The scent of ozone in the cabin was almost overwhelming. The Mormon was asleep, as was the scum next to him. The man had an irritating habit of drooping into Miller’s personal space, so the detective had to shove him back. He still didn’t wake. It was beginning to grow frustrating. He stared into the middle distance, examining the exposed wiring. These transit ships really were barely held together. He couldn’t help but think the Mormon’s wish to meet his God would come true sooner than perhaps he would like.
He glanced down, worrying Julie’s beads in his hand. They were silver - probably platinum or some fancy Earther metal - and smooth. He could see where she had rubbed the metal to dullness, especially near the centre. Their heaviness was a comfort, the only thing preventing his mind from becoming overwhelmed by those damned old wounds. The bad days when being a detective had been less than kind, the bad days when drink got the best of him, and the bad day, when Star Helix became OPA.
He missed his hat though. The heaviness, the weight of the beads, was not quite the same comfort as its soft fabric. He missed running his fingers around its brim, tossing it in the air or onto the hook in his apartment. Kept the rain off his head too.
He flicked the beads back into his hands, his knuckles whitening as he gripped them. As he did, the ship growled around him, shaking his seat. The vibration was constant, but he couldn’t stand the bumps of turbulence.
Opposite him, the Mormon opened his eyes.
This was gonna be a long ride…

One scene in The Expanse that will never not be hilarious is that fight on Eros where a UN BLACK OPS TEAM gets bodied by a bunch of space truckers and a former cop.
