OKAY WONDERFUL here's one about how Mickey even finds FOB:

GOTTA be an accident, right? Where is he gonna hear pop punk of any kind in his regular daily life? We know he dropped out of school early, has spent time off and on in juvie since, and it's not like anyone in his family (outside of Mandy) would listen to it.

So say he gets sent on a job in the middle of May '05 (From Under The Cork Tree came out May 3rd of that year), and it's just an easy car jacking from somewhere on the West Side. Someone in the house owes Terry some money and he's gonna take the car as payment but he can't be fucked to do it himself so he sends Mickey. And Mickey is not at all mad, will take whatever excuse he can to get away from the house and all the family hanging around right now, though he does kind of wish he had Ian with him, but for what? They're fucking, not dating, even if they do hang out sometimes before they fuck, or after, or instead of if they're with Mandy, but this would just be them alone so why the fuck should be be wishing Gallagher were here?

He'd be agitatedly chain smoking the whole walk from the L, chest and head tight and throbbing like they do when he thinks too hard about this... situation he's got going on with Gallagher. He'd find the house easy enough, he'd staked it out the last couple days and had heard the family talking about leaving for vacation and knew there'd be no one home to catch him so it's late afternoon when he gets there.

He's after the Honda on the street, the one with the Wheaton College parking sticker in the corner, and it takes no time at all to jimmy the lock and slide into the driver's seat, reaching beneath the dash and yanking at the wires, twisting them together to get the car to start.

And as soon as he does the stereo ROARS to life, loud as fuck camera noises pouring out of the speakers and Mickey is PANICKED for a hot second but then some guitar comes in and his whole fucking brain lights up?????

And then the guy starts singing??????

Mickey's four songs deep, just finishing Sugar We're Going Down by the time he realizes he's still sitting in front of the goddamn house and finally drives away. He takes the longest route he can to the chop shop Terry told him to go to and before he gets there he digs around in the car looking for the cd case that matches the CD he popped out of the slot in the stereo before finding it in the glove box. He wipes the car and pockets the CD before dropping off the car and gets to the nearest pawn shop he can to get a cheap discman and some shitty headphones.

He doesn't come home till after dark. He spent all day walking around and listening to the album on repeat and felt his whole fucking brain rewire itself. How the fuck did these guys take all these complicated, mixed up feelings he have and put them into songs????

The CD and the discman immediately become his most prized and we'll hidden possessions.

wip wednesday 🌸

i was tagged by @howlinchickhowl @whatwouldmickeydo @michellemisfit to share some of a wip! i'm currently working on a personal trainer & yoga teacher ian/neighbors au that came about because of that au tag game a few weeks back. my prompts involved yoga, them being neighbors, and one of them having a broken shower. i've been running with it. there will be lots of sexual tension. i've had to neglect it for the past couple of weeks, but i'm excited to get to it now and start really fleshing it out. here's a bit that picks up just a few paragraphs in from the very beginning. 💫

Mickey’s had about an hour to accept his new showerless reality. The plumber told him it should only be a day or two to replace some decrepit parts, and if Mickey had believed him then this wouldn’t have been a big deal. He could go a day or two without a shower. But he knows better, which means he needs to figure out a solution for the next few days, since it doesn't exactly thrill him to think about going to work unwashed for like a week. He's not used to that shit these days. He doesn't live in a house where the water bill doesn't get paid anymore.

He stares into his coffee. It offers no answers.

Clouds pass by outside. He watches them out his kitchen window, squinting against the glare of an overcast sky. They also seem to offer no answers.

A car door closes. He glances across the parking lot and watches someone start heading towards his building. It’s the redhead guy from down the hall. He loses sight of him after just a moment as he gets closer to the building, but he sees that he’s carrying a gym bag, like he usually is. He’s wearing red track pants. He kind of looks like a clown.

Or he would, at least. Any regular jackass would look like a clown in those pants. It’s annoying, the shit someone like him can get away with wearing just because he’s got such a nice face and broad shoulders. And he’s tall. And always smiling at people. Mickey rolls his eyes.

But then he has an idea.

Your perfect sleeping conditions: dark, freshly washed sheets and the sound of rain outside, but it has to be real rain, listening to rain sounds just doesn’t compare

A movie everyone should see at least once? I honestly do not have an answer to this question I’m not a big classic movie person, or a big movie person at all tbh.  I’m gonna go with Barbie cause I watched it recently and enjoyed it, but I don’t think that was really the purpose of this question.

What shoes do you wear the most often? Apart from work shoes (sketchers) I live in AF1s

Describe your keys to me: uhh ok.  So I have a lil silver cat keychain with an arched back, an odd black clip which I believe once clipped onto a backpack?  But I no longer have that backpack so please don’t ask why this is still on my keys because I do not have the answer.  A store card and a climbing membership card (which I have used once so again, clueless why it’s still on there), then I have three keys, one to my building, one to my front door and one to the deadlock.

I am absolutely losing my mind over Mickey being a Fall Out Boy fan!! From Under the Cork Tree is pure poetry! One of the best albums of all time to me! I am just thinking of Mickey crushing on Pete Wentz at the height of his emo-ness! Just like me 🤣 Ugh, and screaming along to their songs! I Slept With Someone! XO! Nobody Puts Baby in the Corner! Get Busy Living!

I don't care if anyone feels like this would be OOC for Mickey. The idea of Mickey getting all emo in his bedroom listening to Fall Out Boy floods my brain with serotonin and that's enough for me lol.

Like, if we just shift the timeline of the whole show back a few years so the events happen at the same ages but the years are earlier, you know Mickey would have been GOING THROUGH IT and that album is such high drama from the second it starts that I can see him easily putting the circumstances of his life into the words and being like "yes Pete, no one understands me like you do!"

You know Mr. Fucked For Life was eating that shit up.

IMO Get Busy Living is Mickey's absolute favorite song on the album, and 95% of the reason is the outro and he has screamed himself HOARSE more than once singing along. It's written in notebooks and on scraps of paper and if he went to school it would be scrawled on his binders.

That album was EVERYTHING to me when it came out and I thought Pete Wentz was the most Profound Lyricist in generations lmao. I had the lyrics EVERYWHERE, and even now in my 30s I know every word to every song. It's etched into my brain in an indelible way. I listened to it yesterday and nothing has screamed Mickey Milkovich quite so immediately and insistently as it did!!!!

What about an au where Ian broke it off with a long-term boyfriend (over cheating) and goes to Mickey for a cover-up for a couple's tattoo he got with his ex. Imagine Mickey telling Ian he deserves better while gently wiping excess ink from his skin.

YEAH YEAH YEAH this is so so good little grayface!

Mickey asking why he's covering it up (I imagine something that without the context of the former relationship is just a runn-of-the-mill tattoo) and Ian taking a deep slow breath so it doesn't shudder even though he's feeling real emotional about everything still (they got TATTOOS! They were COMMITTED!!!) and beginning to explain why he got the first one and how the relationship was and Mickey picking up on some red flags about the former partner that Ian didn't catch (frog in the boiling water situation, tbh) and then The Discovery and how Ian tried to work it out and do the work because he is that kind of guy and the former partner not wanting to and Ian feeling so upset that he's got this constant reminder (the tattoos gotta be in a place where Ian sees it a lot, he'd absolutely want to be able to Stare Fondly whenever he wanted) and now he needs it to be something else.

And Mickey would just let him talk and talk and work through it, gloved hand moving slowly over Ian's skin (which Mickey is low-key obsessing over, the freckles drive him crazy, he wants to tattoo the constellations on this man, use them as built in shading for classical painting type tattoos, outline the three he's picked out that look like hearts, add a little snake near the ones that look like puncture marks), the machine buzzing lowly under Ian's story, the soft swipe of a paper towel revealing the new lines, the fresh start, as Mickey and his art help Ian move forward from this bad relationship.

And after a little while, when Ian's talked himself out for now, when he's just kind of sniffing wetly, Mickey will murmur about how no one deserves to have their love and devotion tossed aside like that, like it's nothing, when the most amazing thing one person can offer another is seeing them wholly, knowing the good and the bad of them, the extraordinary and the mundane, and choosing to take it all, to love them Because Of, not In Spite Of. Mickey would point to the curling letters that wrap underneath his collar bones, "Because Of, Not In Spite Of" inked forever into his flesh, a declaration to himself and whoever came along that he would settle for nothing less.

"I'm not one for religion or god or whatever," he'd say, almost a whisper as he goes over the last of things, the little detail touchups to make sure everything about this new ink and new beginning is as perfect as he can make it, "But love like that? That's the only kind of sacred there is."

He'd look up at Ian, eyes wide and sincere and Ian's breath would catch at the unshakable belief radiating from this man who's spent the last hour and a half with his hands all over Ian's skin, helping him close an old chapter and start a new one, facilitating this monumental moment of growth, and he would have a flashing thought that whoever this guy eneded up with would be the luckiest fucking person on the planet.

He'd wait the required amount of time for his tattoo to heal and then he'd call Mickey up, thinking that maybe if he played his cards right, that lucky sonofabitch could be him.

1. HMMMMMM I think this is a tie between Ian, my sweet cheese, my rotten solider, my good time boy FOREVER and Lip.

Ian because barring a bit in the middle there (which was understandable) he's probably the most optimistic of them all. He can see a better life for himself and he's gonna make it happen and he believes he deserves it! He's adaptable (middle child shit) and has that Gallagher ability to think outside the box. A trait he and Lip share as they become adults that I love dearly is their desire to grow and change and be better, even if means admitting some hard things and taking responsibility for bad choices. I don't love the whole gay Jesus storyline (could have been handled in a way that felt less gimmicky imo) but I did like that Ian wasn't going to not own up to the why of his actions, especially because it shows him putting his needs before those of others, ie his little cult following, because he can't heal from it or begin to make amends if he's not honest. He doesn't want to be Monica, who could never accept her diagnosis and her own culpability in bad decisions AND she didn't let anyone be the support system Ian builds for himself with his siblings and Mickey to help him make the good choices when all his brain wants is the other ones.

Lip has those self-sabotaging tendencies of a person who doesn't believe he belongs, or that he shouldn't get good things, and the added pressure of everyone telling you forever how smart you are and how you're gonna be The One who gets out/makes something of themselves/changes everything for the family/etc and when suddenly shit is hard???? And you feel like you can't say anything because you're The One??? And you feel guilty for not being home and for enjoying being your own individual person for the first time in your entire life???? It broke my heart to see him try to half-ass sobriety in some attempt to keep hold of how he wasn't like Frank, he was better, he was The One, but it was great to see him accept that he the best way to be NOT like Frank was to accept that this was a problem he had and that he needed to do something about it. My feelings on how, in the later seasons, they could have utilized his rocky path to being a better person and embracing the growing emotional intelligence and communication skills that come with doing a 12 step program like AA are MANY (and I have OPINIONS on all how the arcs of all the siblings went real fucking sideways out of nowhere) and I am sad every day we got the set up for something great for him and they leaned into Dumb Shenanigans instead.

2. I have more in common with with Lip than most of the others, in that I had that idea that as the "you're so smart! Everything is so easy for you!" gifted kid I had a really really hard time accepting when shit was no longer easy and also understanding that I could ask for help, because who was I if I wasn't those things and ALSO no one believed me when I did ask, because I was so smart and everything was easy so I just wasn't trying hard enough surely (the adult diagnosis of severe ADHD really put a lot of this into context). I struggle to accept when things change for how I thought I would be and I also have the tendency to not believe I deserve good things, but unlike Lip I've done enough therapy to be able to push back when the brain gremlins come calling. I also looked at the family history of substance abuse and alcoholism and went "nah I don't think I'm gonna drink when I'm stressed, seems like tempting fate" which he didn't do till he had to, but I can absolutely see myself going a different route if the drinking culture I grew up with had been more casual.
