MILGRAM - Mukuhara Kazui should be INNOCENT/FORGIVEN
I’m not very vocal online anymore and prefer to vibe to whatever I’m into. But this man’s MV came out on my birthday, solidifying my view about him, and I want to give my own view on why he should be seen as INNOCENT/FORGIVEN for his crime since his verdict is near 50/50, but getting closer to GUILTY/UNFORGIVEN as the days pass.
Just a heads up, I’m also open for other interpretation on why Kazui should be INNOCENT/FORGIVEN or GUILTY/UNFORGIVEN. I love hearing other’s opinions on these.
Also going to just use FORGIVE and UNFORGIVE now. I prefer the literal term instead of the black-and-white choice of GUILTY and INNOCENT.
Honestly, I still don’t understand why fans want to vote Kazui as UNFORGIVEN. From what I have gathered so far, people are voting him UNFORGIVEN because he might have been tactless when he confessed to his wife, Hinako, and voting him FORGIVEN does nothing for him and the story MILGRAM poses. Or, just for the hell of it because lolz.
I...won’t get into that part too deeply. Mostly it’s a joke and I don’t want to take a series too seriously. But c’mon for those who actually see the guy as forgivable, y’know?
1) Kazui was tactless when he confessed to Hinako
Anyways, for the opinion that Kazui was tactless when he confessed to his wife, I have to disagree. Remember, Milgram extracts the mental images from the prisoners based on their thoughts and how they feel and believe during the time the MVs are made. A case in point is Mahiru’s ‘I Love You’ MV, which kept showing how beautifully loving she was with her boyfriend, but she can also see that it might have been toxic from her ignorance.
What I’m saying is that Kazui might be pushing for the UNFORGIVEN verdict because he thinks, or even wants to show us, that it was his fault. He wants us to believe that he was tactless when he confessed to Hinako. I mean, he doesn’t see himself as normal (most likely he is a closet gay). Maybe even a monster because of what happened to Hinako when he confessed he lied.
From all we know, maybe this is what happened. Or this is what he thinks happened and Hinako’s reaction in the MV was exaggerated because of his guilt he carries. People can view things that happened in a different way, it all comes down to perspective, in the end. Afterall, in the end, Kazui felt guilty for what happened to Hinako, and even put back on the mask at the end of HALF and, according to his 2nd voice drama, confessed he would have rather continued lying if it meant she would have lived.
2) Kazui should be voted GUILTY/UNOFRGIVEN for his character and MILGRAM
This is an interesting take, I’ll admit. However, I have to disagree. And I have a lot of reasons, so sit tight.
First of all, this is based on how I feel and why I vote Kazui as /FORGIVEN. Like how the majority doesn’t see Yuno’s crime as murder, I don’t see Kazui’s crime as one either. His confession was never intended to harm Hinako as the outcome anyway. He was tired of lying, and tried to be truthful for once, and it backfired spectacularly in his face thanks to it, thus causing him to wear the mask again and wished he continued lying instead. This is one of those happened in the wrong place at the wrong time situation. Maybe if he was truthful at maybe a safer location (away from the balcony), then the outcome would have ended with no bloodshed.
Also, all of MILGRAM’s prisoners are murderers, yes, but they’re murderers that sort of make you question if they are one or not. Can ignorance that leads to the death of a partner be murder? Is organ harvesting from a brain-dead patient a murder? If someone followed orders to kill, are they a murderer?
So if someone confessed to a lie they’ve been saying for so long and resulted in someone dying from it, is that murder?
To me, no. It was just the worst result that Kazui never intended to happen.
Also, I don’t get why people are voting Kazui as FORGIVEN when he’s basically the same as Mahiru. They both have partners they never intended to harm from the beginning - being truly in love or not. The only difference is that Mahiru was ignorant of how her love affected her boyfriend, while Kazui put up with the lie for the sake of what’s ‘normal’ in love, and he tried to stop the lie, and, again, it failed on him big time. So like how Fuuta and Kotoko are similar in their crimes, Mahiru and Kazui are the same as well.
Also voting Kazui as UNFORGIVEN sounds like it will backfire like how it did with Mahiru and Amane in Trial 1. Now I only got into the series when I stumbled onto Muu’s 2nd MV, but from what I heard, and correct me if I’m wrong, people voted Amane as UNFORGIVEN back then because it was to make her ‘realise her sins’. And the result is a crazed Amame because of it.
Now I don’t believe Kazui will go batshit crazy like Amane if we vote him UNOFORGIVEN for this trial, but something tells me it will backfire more if we don’t vote him as FORGIVEN. By saying he’s in the wrong, especially if we’re correct on what he was lying about, it’s like we’re denying him because we reached that truth, and he should be punished for it. By denying him, we’re basically doing the same thing like what happened to Mahiru and Amane as well.
Also, yes I’m aware from a meta-perspective that it’s better to have him FORGIVEN because he’s the only one who can go up against Kotoko (and maybe including Amane and Mikoto), and maybe stop Haruka from offing himself after this trial ends. And I agree! This is also one of the reasons why I say to forgive him to protect others in MILGRAM. However, it is sort of safe to say that no one will die if Kazui is voted UNFORGIVEN. I mean from a storytelling perspective, it will be a waste to kill off the characters and make the last trial shorter because of it...
But! I still don’t want any other prisoners harmed because of Haruka, Amane, Mikoto and Kotoko if Kazui is voted UNFORGIVEN. The prison in MILGRAM will go even more hellish if that happens, and I’m not living up to that drama and am not doing it for the sake of drama. Again I don’t want more situations born from what happened to Amane. We should really choose wisely on why we vote, not because of what we want to happen in MILGRAM, but really personal belief whether the crime committed by the prisoners is forgivable or not.
In the end, I think what is important for Kazui is what he wants from us - to know his sin. He pointed out from his voice drama that we were wrong about him cheating. It’s most likely that he is a closet gay at this point. Voting for him UNFORGIVEN will most likely enforce how he isn’t normal, and being gay does make him a murderer, as shown at the end of his CAT MV. But really, it isn’t. His crime was lying. When he tried to confess, he didn’t intend death to follow.
I’m sure if he’s voted FORGIVEN in the end, Kazui will hear our reasonings that we think he’s gay. I mean, Yuno seem to be able to hear our opinions on her from the 1st trial according to her 2nd voice drama. So, I say to vote for Kazui to be FORGIVEN and let him know what we think his sin is likely this time. If he didn’t feel anything from it, we’ll leave that up to the last trial.
Cheers and thank you if you read this far.
TL;DR: Kazui should be voted FORGIVEN. The interpretation of his CAT MV can be that he was tactless when he confessed to what he lied about to Hinako, but that might be from his guilt and/or pushing us to make him UNFORGIVEN. Also, voting him so UNFORGIVEN sounds like it will backfire like it did with Amane during the 1st trial. Just realise his sin, most likely he’s gay, and vote based if you think confessing to a lie that caused unintended death is murder or not.

Im fully shocked and appalled that Kazui's guilty vote is at 50.41% that man is innocent and it's not just because I think he's a hottie.
Here are some reasons to vote Kazui Innocent:
Starting with the basics: He didn't cheat on his wife, this was confirmed.
Whatever secret he had been keeping from his wife, while obviously devastating, didn't intend to kill her. Even if he revealed this as soon as he knew, the situation probably wouldn't have turned out any better, or it could've ended just the same.
Whatever his secret is (to me it is his homosexuality or his rushing into a marriage), it clearly eats at him, he never wanted to hurt his wife in anyway but also couldn't stand living in a marriage where he isn't happy.
He is an actually good man, like, he cares about the other prisoners well being, even if some of em are a bit wack. Really goes to show that even the thought of hurting his wife by cheating wasn't even in his fucking mind, he couldn't do that to her. So his secret must be something involuntary like falling out of love, not wanting to continue in a marriage and/or being gay or queer (maybe aro).
In my conclusion, he is INNOCENT
Please vote Kazui as inno I beg, he has legit done nothing wrong.

just watched ("just watched" meaning played on loop for an hour) cat and oh my god. first of all, banger. kazui's first song was good but too slow and emotional for me to listen to that often but this one is so fun. he's having fun(?).
but the mahiru parallels. THE MAHIRU PARALLELS. mahiru doing anything she can to stay in a relationship that's actively hurting them both / kazui only keeping up the bare minimum for the marriage and wanting to take a break from it, wishing for someone else. mahiru getting attached to the first person who shows her affection / kazui wanting to be caressed but his wife can't cut it, because he doesn't want to be with a woman. kazui started out asking for a guilty verdict and blaming himself and now he's wondering if he's really innocent, still calling himself the perpetrator / mahiru getting a guilty verdict and swinging 180 from "I didn't do anything!" to "it's all my fault it's all my fault"
and the SONG PARALLELS. both of them have this equation theme, like love and relationships are just a problem to be solved ("Clothes Food Shelter + Love and Miss You" // "Love plus destiny = Crap, smash it, shatter it, bye-bye"), a void to be filled based on prerequisites. mahiru falling in love with the first person she was interested and deciding that once it was mutual, this must be real / kazui deciding that since his partner seemed to like him, and he "should" be interested in women, it would be a good pick. he surely liked her as a good friend, as well, because of how much they worked together / mahiru not knowing her boyfriend pre relationship at all.
the animal theming too- kazui calls himself a cat, to be loved but not pinned down, and bites the dove's wing off. it was supposed to be freeing, to finally be in a relationship, to have people not ask him when he's going to settle down anymore- but it's not, he can't stand it, it's prey to be consumed, bothers him with every ruffle of its feathers. mahiru feeding her boyfriend rats because she thinks that's what love is supposed to taste like, rotting and sour and rancid but she'll be damned if she doesn't have it.

"I want to be loved, just like a cat"
The performance have been followed to its end. The act nears its timely conclusion. The lead receives his praises and the stage awaits the moment the status quo is set by romance.
Yet the script begged for untimely tragedy.
A gasp. Then silence. And finally, terror.
A love ignited by conflict, all false, naught but a red herring. The lie which begetted revelry from the crowd now sundered by truth grotesque and impure. A trick unraveled by none other than the lead, a magician, or perhaps simply a liar.
The curtains fall. What was seen can no longer be unseen...

"Cat" - Lyrics + Translation Analysis
As it happens to be Kazui's birthday, let's talk about the lyrics in Cat some more - Mostly using the official translation (since it's accurate for the most part) with a few exceptions. I'm not great at Japanese and only know a few words, so whenever further translation was needed, I hit the books. If I miss any context, feel free to add on!
I believe Cat, at its core, is about Kazui's decision to confess his love to an unseen second person in his MV OR confessing his 'sin' to his wife. This song is not about Hinako/his wife, though she plays an important role in the visuals of the song.
Alright, let's start with some minor things.
Lie, until it gets better, follow the king of the masquerade
This pretty much stays the exact same in Japanese, with the exception of a reference to "kyogen", a japanese form of traditional drama. 'Kyogen'-type theater usually serves as intermissions between the longer and more serious 'Noh' plays, in which actors wear masks. Kyogen is more comedic in nature and uses slapstick.
(This line has probably been analyzed to death: It's a pretty clear indicator of Kazui being a self-declared 'master of deception'/having lied his whole life about something, like he mentions in his Voice Drama.)
Since when have I ignored my feelings?/It’s better to be a let down, than to be let down yourself/I just wanted to touch, to caress/I just wanted to be touched
(Nothing interesting to add translation wise. I believe this batch of lyrics is Kazui wrestling with himself over whether he should tell the truth or not: In my opinion, this is about him being unsure whether to confess his love to the unseen second person in the scene we see later in his MV. (or if you're on copium like me, the bartender guy...))
So it’s wrong? Oh shove that!/INNOCENT, isn’t that right?/Maybe, perhaps… or… could it come true… like/It’s for the sake of true love, who wouldn’t lie for that?
The only notable difference in translation is, in classic MILGRAM fashion, the word 'INNOCENT' being 'FORGIVEN' in the Japanese version. So, y'know. We know this.
(This is the only lyric that is a bit of a puzzle to me. Kazui believes he was in the right for lying to his wife/Hinako, because he couldn't have lived in a society where he'd be seen as strange or an outsider. So, he did what everyone else does around him: Once he's an older adult, he gets married. Not sure what the 'true love' part is about, in this case - maybe he believes to reach that desire he craves, he has to put up this charade.)
Love (plus) Destiny = Crap, smash it, shatter it, bye-bye/That sticky-sweet sequence: Dinner + Camouflage + You-Know-What/Loving Affection (minus) Love, it’s tacky, this two-way deceit/Victim and Perpetrator, let’s keep it simple
Hate to disappoint but Kazui is not making an awesome reference to sex with "You-Know-What" - 'nanchatte' is used more like "what a joke" in this context. In the sense that - this is just what everyone does, you already know the rest of the story.
Interesting to note is that the official english lyrics were changed at some point: The third line of this batch used to say this:
Devotion (minus) love, lame, cheating
I think this may have been changed to remove the reference to 'cheating'. In English, cheating can be used as both cheating at games and as cheating in relationships - while in Japanese, these terms are very different. The term used in Japanese still seems to mean 'cheating' in the game way, fitting Kazui's gambling/showman theme.
(I think these lines are pretty clear to read from a story perspective. Kazui isn't actually in love with his wife and presents their relationship as a lie, he's 'cheating' at the game of love. Also, 'camouflage/disguise' is an interesting choice of words - disguising himself as what, trying to fit in with who? The norm, methinks. He wants to appeal to what everyone else is doing.)
Phew, oh wow I’m drunk/Hey, so what if I said I liked-liked you, what would you do?
The english variant of this text uses 'like-like', and I'm not too sure why. The japanese version uses 'daisuki', perhaps a bit of a more cutesy way to say 'love' than 'aishiteru'. Maybe the intention in the japanese text is a more childish tone due to Kazui's intoxication.
(This lyric, in my opinion, is the big moment the first few batches of lyrics have been building to: Kazui confesses his feelings to whoever this mystery person is in a state of intoxication.)
I just wanted to ask, so it’s out in the open/I just got a little greedy
(Nothing too interesting translation wise. "I wanted to ask" obviously refers to "What would you do?" Pretty self-explanatory as well. Kazui believes his confession was selfish. He likely feels bad for his wife.)
All those things I wanna do that I can’t say out loud/I gotta keep it inside and act/The beating of this heart… see… it’s no longer about good and bad… it isn’t/I realize the futility, but I still can’t help but dream
'I gotta keep it inside and act' would perhaps be more accurately translated to 'I gotta drink it up and swallow it'. Reference to substance abuse. Awesome.
(I love repressed people!!! Kazui, since indulging in his desire and confessing his feelings, isn't sure about his place in the world. It's no longer about good or bad, his desire is impossible to make a reality, his only escape is fantasizing. Which leads us back to his constant references to 'dreaming', all the way to his lyrics in UNDERCOVER.)
I can’t stop, I can’t be normal/This feeling, it can’t be gratified/I can’t stop, I can’t be normal/This feeling, it’s yearning to be satisfied
(Oh boy, we're on yearning now, huh. More dilemmas in his head - he's fighting with himself on if his 'unnatural' desire is wrong, but he knows he can't live with himself if he doesn't fulfill it.)
Let's take a breather
(Unsure. Some translations say this is also 'Just a quick smoke/I need a quick smoke'. Maybe smoking is supposed to represent him indulging in his desire at this moment. That, or he wants a break from his inner conflict - Or even confessing to his wife is a 'breather'.)
Love (plus) Destiny = Crap, smash it, shatter it, bye-bye/To be caressed by you, that would be perfection/I wanted to be loved, just like a cat/Maybe act capricious, on my word and at my fancy
Here's an interesting difference between the Japanese and English versions! In the original version, 'caressed' is 'pet'/'stroked'. The translation also removes the 'you' from the third line. So maybe this would be a little more accurate:
To be pet by you, that would be perfection/I wanted you to love me like a cat
Unfortunately, I have no idea what the last line is supposed to be in the original. DeepL translated it as 'I might want to leave it with you on a whim' - other sites translate it as something among the lines of 'making a deposit'. I'm at a loss of how to interpret this line. LOL.
(Perhaps important context to add is that, in Japanese context, 'being loved like a cat' would be receiving love but not giving much in return. People have pointed out the gay slang 'neko' reference to this about a dozen times before, and even though the lyrics do not use the kanji associated with the slang term, I believe it could have some merit.)
Lie, until it gets better, follow the king of the masquerade/Lick that sin and oppose punishment, until you can meet the king of the masquerade
(This is a pretty 1:1 translation. What does 'lick that sin' mean? Man what do I know. It's another cat reference, though! I think the last line is referring to his verdict in the first trial, maybe. Perhaps Kazui is building up his lies even more, in some way, and repressing himself more? I'm a little unsure. It is plausible that he's growing more comfortable in his persona.)
Overall, I believe this song is Kazui finally coming to that decision of confessing his love for the unknown person. 'Half' may have been about him contemplating it, which would make 'Cat' a pretty direct continuation of this little story - I wonder if his third trial song might end the story!
I'm personally of the opinion that Kazui's 'desire' is either of the nature that he just can't stay in relationships for too long without getting bored (which cracks in some places, especially in the MV) or that he is some flavor of LGBT which is more taboo in Japan, especially for male role models like him - a cop, big, strong, masculine... Obviously he'd be pressured to enter a heteronormative life.
This was really fun to do! I might do this sort of thing with more future MILGRAM songs, so if you have any requests, let me know! If you have anything to add translation-wise, feel free to correct me. Thanks for reading, hope you enjoyed!

Kazui - Half/Cat analysis
Face discernment for what you really feel or live in a comfortable lie being unhappy? Following the path of the heart can lead to greater satisfaction and joy, but it can also end up dooming the dreamer.
Let's find the king of the masquerade,
[CW: Animal cruelty, suicide implications, themes of addiction to alcohol and smoking]
(For convenience, I will be reviewing Cat first and then Half, in order to better structure the analysis)
A romance that begins more with the desire to be loved, to be touched and to touch, to feel like that special person in someone's life, rather than to think of her in the same way. Kazui doesn't make any progress until he realizes that Hinako likes him, at first he doesn't even turn to look at her, possibly seeing the relationship as an opportunity to satisfy that need for affection and emotional connection.
(An interesting trivia is that he worked as a policeman, explaining his way of seeing MILGRAM in the first trial and actions such as trying to hit Es or wondering 'what kind of organization is behind something like this'. Also him being used to witness violent acts) The ring comes out of his mouth as if it was a word, and when it reaches his hands it turns into a white dove. White doves are popularly associated with freedom, symbolizing possitive things. During funerals, it is believed that white doves can carry a loved one to heaven. Another slightly less common meaning is that they represent the soul as such, which is the interpretation that comes closest to what we see in the video. The animal symbolizes them together, the apparent happiness that they live as a couple, the peace in their lives. The years pass and the relationship evolves into a marriage. When we see Kazui propose, the lyrics read “It's for the sake of true love - who wouldn't lie for that?” Kazui sees in the relationship an opportunity to satisfy both their desires, Hinako loves him, and although his feelings are not sincere from the beginning, she sees it as an exchange where they both manage to get something: she gets to be with him, and he gets the affection and closeness that he yearns so much.
The topic of lying for everyone's sake is also present in the VD, specifically mentioning Kant's philosophy regarding lies; "The one who lies, even if he has good intentions, must face all the consequences that this may entail." If your lie, no matter how white or harmless, caused someone's death, you must face the consequences. For Kant, telling the truth removes all moral responsibility from the person. Instead, lying implies being responsible in the eyes of others and in oneself. As Es themself mentions, this doesn't sound all that convincing. For Kazui, it is, because what happened was just a result of him starting to lie and after a long time deciding to stop.
We can see how Hinako expresses strong emotions after being proposed to and marrying him. She cries with joy and has a big smile on her face, while Kazui seems to smile more out of commitment, without really feeling that joy. I say this taking into consideration that as we saw in Half Kazui is actually someone quite emotional, even if he doesn't let others be aware of it. What would be the problem in showing your wife, who is also just as touched as you are, that you're glad you're getting married? Hiding negative feelings is understandable, but I really don't see why he should camouflage his joy at this moment. Something to also note is that Half's barista is present at the wedding, right in the middle of the frame. This implies a fairly close relationship with him, which reveals how often he frequents said bar and something that was never a secret; his problems with alcohol.
Kazui simplifies their relationship as that of a victim and a perpetrator, quite close to MILGRAM's definition of him. He covers the happy couple with a and when he lifts the cloth there's a group of red apples and a single green apple. Apples are seen as the fruit of sin and adultery, of falling into temptation. It can also represent rebirth. However, out of all the red apples, Kazui only chooses the green one. Apple green represents once again hope and new beginnings. I believe that the apple represents Kazui's desire for freedom, the one that is denied to him by staying in his marriage. He must keep it at bay, preventing her from reaching Hinako so as not to disturb his magic tricks.
Seeing himself trapped in a highly unhappy life, Kazui falls into bad habits such as smoking and drinking, frequenting the bar very often. As soon as he starts to pursue that desire, the apple gradually moves closer to him. Kazui sees his true self as a spectator of his own act, witnessing how his own actions take him away from his dream, and in turn bring him closer in an insatiable quest to satisfy that feeling.
(Not so related, but I come to think that the empty seat on the stage represents how Kazui doesn't see Hinako as the love of his life, therefore the space that should be occupied by that special someone next to him is still empty. Also look at: 1. the person standing in a seat far away at the other side of the apple, apparently a femenine silhouette and 2. this parallels I found)
As soon as he gets a taste of that fruit, through his own addictions, he begins to see it as an inherent part of himself. His reflection in the drink is wearing the clothes he wears when visiting the bar in Half, where he's also close to a woman, who in fact doesn't appear again in Cat. I doubt that infidelity occurred, mainly because Kazui himself clarifies that the situation "didn't end with that." I'd also like to revisit one of Cat's lines: "Oh, I'm drunk again – If I told you I liked-liked you, what would you do?" I doubt very much that he is telling this to his wife, so I think that because of his own drunkenness he ended up flirting with other people (I'm not saying that it was with the woman next to him, because his body language indicates respect more than anything and he doesn't seem to want anything with her, besides he doesn't seem to be drunk either. I would say, in fact, that he probably tried to flirt with the bartender(?)
His magic tricks start to fail, depicting how his facade is slowly weakening further due to his own dissatisfaction. This line “I can't stop, I can't be normal” along with the VD mentioning how he has tried to live “just like he was born, being himself” are pretty on point. To me, they're suggesting the possibility that Kazui really doesn't like women, which is why his relationship with Hinako was doomed from the start, taken much further to extremes due to his habit of smoking and drinking too much. In front of her, he removes his ring and transforms it into a cigarette, while asking her to take a break – once again making it clear how Kazui would come to neglect her marriage in favor of his escapism in addictions. After turning off the cigarette in his palm, it turns into the same dove we see at the beginning of the video. In front of the horrified face of his wife, Kazui rips off its head; this is the moment in which he reveals his dissatisfaction with the relationship and with his life as it is now, putting into perspective how his actions and decisions ended up condemning them both. The animal's blood splatters Hinako as a sign of how much this affects her, who then falls to the ground, dissolving just like a red apple that falls and dissolves into a red, blood-like liquid.
I also find it interesting that during this scene Kazui is depicted under a red light, which may not only refer to how he continues to see himself as guilty despite being voted innocent, but also symbolizes danger, risks and sensuality. "I want to be loved, like a cat" cats instinctively chase and kill birds. As much as you want to avoid it, they will always have that primal instinct. Kazui ends up "succumbing to instinct", or rather to his emotions. Meanwhile, Hinako is in a white background, much brighter than him – playing again with the perception of the perpetrator and the victim, that pure person who ended up going through all this because of his fault. She's also viewed from above, possibly because Kazui perceives her as someone less capable of handling all the difficulties that end up being revealed between them. The fact that the person she loves so much sees their commitment more as a punishment, the cruelest way of seeing things. She ends up committing suicide, overwhelmed by all the problems and the realization that everything has been just a lie until now. “Keep lying until you find the king of masquerade”, mask events are usually based on just acting under a mask and pretending to be someone you are not. Kazui is our king, who lies best and who comes out unscathed, until the catastrophic end unravels. ( The truth is that I haven't gotten much information about it online so I'm using what I remember about the Hunchback of Notredame, don't believe me too much, this post explains it much better.)
