Milford Sound or Doubtful Sound? A decision aid
New Zealand specialist
And the grandiose silence of nature, which you can (and want to) enjoy during the boat tour on the Sound, unfortunately does not impress small children very much. But they are there, and they naturally influence the desired experience of lonely nature. You'll only find this here in the slimmed-down version - although we also found this one very impressive. You don't have a campervan, no time or no desire for long trips?

Especially the Doubtful Sound is very appealing to me. With husband and children we travelled through New Zealand for some time with the camper and got to know the country and its people a little bit better. I can only recommend the trip with the camper through New Zealand and give you many tips for planning your trip to New Zealand. The cruise through Milford Sound in Fjordland National Park is almost a must on the South Island in New Zealand.
Also on the Routeburn Track 4 seasons are no rarity, even in summer. © Travel Blog CLOUDSWIDE - travel reports, tips & photos from around the world - and insider tips from the Seychelles. Some contributions contain partner and recommendation links. These support the maintenance of this blog.
The service is first class and the view R spectacular.
The trail takes us through the coastal forest with gigantic Rimu trees, Nikau palms, beeches and tree ferns and climbs up to the Nydia saddle (387m).
So we went to the i-Site in Te Anau (tourist info) a few days before in the hope to get valuable tips for all our questions.

Milford Sound
The traffic volume early in the morning was very low. But we have to say that we were on the road in the middle of March and therefore a little bit out of season. Booking.com is a mailing list (without the obligation of verification) and not a publisher of these comments and answers. We also show you transparently what the status of your submitted review is. So we will start a day trip from Te Anau to Milford Sound, where we will go on one of the many boats that make their daily rounds on the fjord. The glacier region of New Zealand is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. In the early morning we will head to Lake Matheson, also known as Lake of Mirrors, 5 km from Fox Glacier. Depending on the weather and sea tides, you can expect an afternoon hike in the Hokitika foothills or along the coast of the Tasman Sea.
Milford Sound from Te Anau
I can only take pictures where I lean safely against the railings. Since there is coffee and cake in the dining room meanwhile, I take the chance and sit down inside for a short break.
Jeep according to weather and sea tides, in the afternoon, a hiking tour in the alpine foreland of Hokitika or at the coast of the Tasman Sea.
Because we are not really convinced that a boat tour is particularly pleasant in strong wind and rain.
{ For the night we moor in a small bay on Milford Sound and you can chat with the other guests or play board games. Of course you can also relax on deck while the night falls on Milford Sound. In Te Anau itself there are some holiday parks. Those who want to camp along the Te Anau-Milford Highway can use DOC campsites. If you want to have electricity, hot water or reception, this is not the right place. Read more about campervan hire New Zealand here.

From Manapouri: Boat tour in the wild fjord Doubtful Sound
You have reached the high mountain region of New Zealand. Here the glaciers reach down to sea level - a phenomenon that can only be observed in South America and Iceland. I just happened to land on your blog by chance. We - travelling without children - were in New Zealand a few years ago and asked ourselves the same question. Since we prefer to travel off the beaten track - and have enough time - we spontaneously decided to go for the Doubtful Sound.
New Zealand - Milford Sound
A very clear advantage of the bus tour is that everyone can sit back and enjoy the views of this great landscape. Some coaches are even equipped with a glazed roof, which promises even better views. The Milford Track is one of the nine Great Walks in New Zealand and leads in 4 days through the Fjordland National Park.
The Aucklanders' attitude to life is reflected in the lively scenery of the Viaduct Basin with its bars and cafés. In the immediate vicinity you can also admire the majestic sailing boats in the world's largest marina. Accommodation in a hotel in Auckland just a few minutes walk from the centre and harbour. No frills, like breakfast or lunch and everything else that is offered.

The forest is absolutely fantastic, there is a lot to discover for the children and the lake is also beautiful.

Trekking on North and South Island
Read more about campervan hire New Zealand here. We had expected to see a lot of people, but the fact that there were so many surprised us nevertheless. But if one considers that the wonderful arrival and the fascinating animal world belong to the "Milford experience", it makes our day trip to something very special. For the first time, we were stuck in a traffic jam in front of the Homer Tunnel. But this could not be avoided, as we had to wait until the roadway was opened. In the dining room there is a rich breakfast buffet with hot and cold dishes from half past six, a typical New Zealand breakfast. As at seven o'clock the anchor is lifted and the trip to Tasman Sea is supposed to start, we want to finish our breakfast before. But we are not quite finished when the engines are started. Then we drive through the tunnel again and come back to the beautiful Gertrude Valley. Again and again we have to stop and take pictures.

3 Reasons for accommodation Milford Sound Overnight Cruise - Fiordland Discovery
No wonder, after all the fjord is even called the eighth wonder of the world. On the internet there are countless top ratings in which the Milford Sound is described as "breathtaking", "spectacular" or as "an absolute must in New Zealand". This trip has expedition character, as the course of the tour is very weather-dependent.
The traffic early in the morning was very low.
Since we wanted to stay flexible concerning the weather, we bought the ticket only two days in advance (middle of March).
Then it goes downhill until you reach the parking lot at Kaiuma Bay, where you will be picked up again by your tour guide who moved the car.
>Many people book a bus tour from Te Anau to Milford Sound, including a boat tour.>Driving through clouds by car is something I never dreamed of.>/ul> It may well be that this is different with a larger provider, but we would not risk it. The majority of the coaches leave Te Anau between 8.00 and 10.00 am. It is definitely worthwhile to plan your own journey accordingly and avoid these traffic rush hours. In good weather, the hiker will have an unforgettable view when the highest mountains of New Zealand are reflected in the lake. Alternatively, you can take a helicopter flight over the glacier this morning (optional). We continue along the west coast via Bruce Bay to Knights Point - from where you have an impressive view of the wild west coast. At Ship Creek there is time to explore the Kahikatea Swamp Forest and the beach of a dune lake before you reach Haast Pass.
and South Seas
After the exploration tour you will travel by bus over the Wilmot Pass and by ferry across Lake Manapouri before returning to Te Anau by bus. The Milford Road is narrow and winding. Since we have already crossed numerous pass roads in Switzerland, such road conditions are nothing unusual for us. So the route was easy for us to master with good weather and little traffic.
