It has been so long since I last wore this lipstick. I was actually worried that the lipstick had dried up or something. It’s been years since I last wore it. But my fears proved to be unfounded. I've used a lot of makeup over my last 9 years of cosplaying, but this is whats in current rotation. My criteria for products is affordability, what performs well irl and in photos, and products that for the most part have a lower rating on the ewg scale (with few exceptions). I also don't really buy makeup outside of sale events like Black Friday, after Christmas, or during some promotion just so ya'll have context about the price ranges listed per item.

I’ve decided to just become eerily accurate to the era of makeup that I really wanted to do, I should have done this a long time ago but just didn’t master it until now.

✭ To be more accurate with my look I stopped wearing concealer and powder (unless I’m doing an early 2010s look) because it didn’t look right on my face anymore, but if you want to keep wearing it then you do you, boo <3

✭ Nude eyeshadow with normal lip gloss is perfectly fine, it reminds me of the pop girlies first era of going into their music career (ex: Rihanna’s Music of the Sun, JoJo’s, Paula DeAnda, Cassie, Christina Milian, etc.)

Anyone remember that talk about red lipsticks and that one blog coming and asking you advice about the best red? I wonder if she ended up buying her red lipsticks 💄💋and liner and I wonder which ones she got. I hope it worked out for her. I wonder if she wore it already! If you’re kinda tan I think that MAC Lady Danger is a great color. It looks amazing on a ton of different skin tones. Keep in mind it’s an orange based red.

Also!! Milani has a beautiful lipstick formula. And the OG Revlon lipsticks are great. Who remembers Cherries in the Snow? That lipstick has gone through some changes throughout the years.

I know not everyone wants to spend a ton on a red lipstick, so don’t knock the drugstore. And while I am a lipstick girl, I know a ton of people do well with the lipstick stains.

Since you're a makeup fiend let's talk about how lip oils have no color once they're worn 🤸 I bought a deep red lip oil only for the color to be literally almost clear with no hint of red at all 😭

And for some reason the scent was like baked goods? It was a good scent.

You should know that lip oils are a lot less rich in pigment than lipgloss, their main purpose is to hydrate and moisturise your lips and (if it has pigment) add a nice colour to them. If you’re looking for more pigment, I suggest either switching to lipglosses or going in with a lipstick or tint before applying your lip oil so it can not only protect your lips, but make them shiny and give them an extra pop of colour. And make sure to choose darker colours, since opting for baby pink or light colours usually leads to being disappointed in the difference it made to your lips (in terms of colour).

And maybe the serious lack of pigment in the cheap lip oil you bought has to do with the brand itself, my absolute favourite brands for lip oils are: Nyx (😍😍😍😍😍😍), clarins (😍😍😍😍😍😍), dior (😍😍😍😍😍😍), huda beauty, milani cosmetics (it’s affordable + the fruit fetish lip oil is an amazing dupe for the dior one), and essence (also affordable and awesome).

Lipstick

Ever since I was little, I have been obsessed with lipstick. As young as five years old, I was enchanted by the bright reds, shimmery pinks, glassy corals–almost every color imaginable in a bottle, tube, or jar. By the age of nine, I had memorized the layout of Wal-Mart’s beauty section as I wandered the aisles, gazing at those forbidden tubes. From the sleek black of Revlon to the tempting gold of Milani to the bright, plasticky pinks of Hard Candy, the containers stared at me, tauntingly, seeming to ask “When will you put us on?” as I traversed the beauty section, imagining a future in which I would inevitably wear bright red lipstick every day of the week. 

When I was a child, of course, my mother would have never let me out of the house in real lipstick, so I had to content myself with lip balms. Lip Smackers–particularly Dr. Pepper, Coca-Cola, and Vanilla Malt–were my go-to. Every morning, I would slather my lips in synthetic flavor as I prepared to march out the door on my way to school. I knew that the balm was a weak substitute for the “real deal”, but I enjoyed the flavors and the grown-up feeling of the closest thing I had to real lipstick.

The next logical step in this journey? Lip gloss. My mother finally decided it was fine for me to wear the little kid stuff, and I was thrilled. I loved lip gloss; it was essentially lip balm, but with a much more sophisticated shine (or so I told myself). I wore it all the time…at least, when I had it. I ran out fast due to overuse, and it was usually a while before I got more, so I figured out pretty quickly that I should continue to use my Lip Smackers for “everyday use” and only wear the grown-up gloss on what my young brain deemed “special occasions”. This worked fine, and I was somewhat content to simply wear gloss and lip balm, but I think even then all that I really wanted was a bright red lipstick. As I became a middle schooler, my mom allowed me to wear her plain, nude lipstick occasionally when we went to church, though the color was never as bold as I would have hoped.

Finally, in seventh grade, the day came. While taking me shopping for basic makeup in the fluorescent aisles of Wal-Mart, my mom casually agreed to let me wear lipstick every day. I tried to stay collected as the little girl inside of me squealed and jumped for joy. Laughing at my excitement, my mother selected a more “everyday” color for me: a soft, rusty reddish-brown called Rum Riche. That was the first official lipstick in my now-expansive collection that contains every color I can get my hands on, including my beloved bright red.

The cool-toned bright red in question–Russian Red by MAC–is my current choice whenever I need a pick-me-up, or when I just want to feel fancy. I don’t wear it as often as my other shades, but the compliments abound when I do. Just last week, my gym teacher told me that she loves it when I wear bright red lipstick, because “No one expresses themselves anymore–it’s nice to see young people doing their own thing.” I love this, because to me, that is what lipstick is: an expression of the self, worn proudly on the face. In fact, it is unlikely that you will ever catch me without a colorful product of some sort on my lips, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
