AN: This guide is not meant to encourage you to start loving Russian language or culture. As much as I personally love Nikolai, I'll absolutely understand, there are people out there, that may feel bad, seeing him in CoD franchise, because of everything going on right now. This is not a call to start loving him, not a call to start describing this character as an absolute angel (he is not and never was). If seeing such a guide makes you feel bad - I'm genuinely sorry, and I'm open to a dialogue to make it better.

I tried to cover the most commonly used themes. However, it's impossible to make it short, yet all-covering. So please don't hesitate to come into my DMs with 'hey, I want Nikolai to say this thing in my fic - could you translate it in Russian for me?'. I'm always super-happy to help!

These are not my HCs, about what would Nik say, just some usefull phrases!

And the last one: Russian language uses Cyrillic letters. But I personally love to, at least try to hear, how other languages sound. So I provided translations (Cyrilic) and transliterations (Latin).

Cultural extras to get in the mood

I sometimes meet this take, that Russian, as well as German language, sounds menacing or harsh. And as much as I understand, that it is subjective perception, I have something to add: you can modulate Russian speech as well as any other. You can sound like softest softie, coo and purr in Russian, if you want. Here is a good example: a guy just reads a poem, but you try and tell me, he is not straight seducing you.

Very nice perspective on how non-tourist Russia looks like. The guy travels to places, that still look and feel like USSR and somehow manages to survive. Don't mind him rambling, how good was soviet life - he doesn't mean it, he just says whatever people, he meets, would love to hear.

Another good channel to explore non-tourist Ru and some extreme weathers. Don't worry, there are no jumpscares and nothing scary happens on the videos.

Russian winter is a tricky one, because -40 С in Yakutsk can sometimes feel softer as -20 in Moscow. Humidity and wind are the keys.

No, vodka is not the only alcohol option) You can write a Ru character, that despises vodka and it will be 100% legit.

If you need domestic and interior references to Nikolais youth in soviet Ru - I can recommend HBOs Chernobyl series. An accuracy and attention to domestic details there is so great that it gets uncanny sometimes.

Stefan Kapičić does very tender and smooth version of Slavic accent. And he is 100% right to do so - it works good both for his character and the audience. If you want to hear heavier versions of Russian accent - here is a little funny video.

Strangerville Has Fallen!

Combined forces in Windenburg and Strangreix invaded Strangerville and its military citizens, taking the main military base in a matter of hours. There are many casualties and deaths, but Strangerville is now to be divided between the New Sixam Empire and the Syndicated States.

The attack was lead by Captain Solmon Beerloith of the Windenburg Royal Knights, Agent Elena Orzel of the Golden Needle, and Captain Nadira Strangreix of the Strangreix Secret Service. Liege Riya Hakzar, a member of the Royal Knights, was the one to capture Ruling General Apollox Hakzar and force a surrender. 

Sadly, many have died in this attack. Including:

The remaining survivors of Strangerville are worried about the next coming of the Mother Plant, with so little forces to stop it. However, the Syndicated States are confident that the Mother Plant can be killed without going into battle again.

Civ Design notes: His hair is brown with orange highlights. He has a muscular build that’s hidden by the baggy clothes he chooses to wear most of the time. Not much to say about his civilian design, he’s pretty much just a regular dude.

Hero design notes: His hero suit is composed mainly of black and orange, with read and yellow accents. He wears no sleeves or gloves in order to have more space to generate his power. His hair gains a stong orange hue which helps hide his identity. His mask is also incorporated with thermal vision. He doesn’t use many gadgets and insted relys mostly on his enhancement. However he does wear special equipment in order to boost his already existing abilities.

Personality: Magnus is a confident individual with an overall positive outlook life. Outside of hero work his top proirities are his son, his friends and his free time. He enjoys leisure activities and likes to take a break from his responsibilities every once in a while in order to have his mind clear and focussed, believing that hyperfixating on his work could easily tire him and get him to work less efficiently.For this reason he also sprinkles a bit of humour while working every once in a while

Work as a Hero: Inferno fullfills a more stereotipical role when it comes to his position as a hero, fighthing villains and stoping crime in whatever area he happens to be in since his enhancement is more built for combat and capture. Inferno is part of a hero duo with  the hero “Inverno” and the two of them are rareley seen figthing individually. The media thinks of inferno as a respecable and trustworthy hero capable of getting his job done. His easy going attitude makes him quite popular with the masses and a lot of young people and kids tend to have him in their top favourite hero lists. This makes him be pretty high in the popularity polls, and has managed to be in the top 5 in a few ocasions.

Enhancement: Inferno can generate magama out of his body. He can control it and manipulate it in it’s most liquid state, moving it around. He can also solidify said magma, creating structures that prevent serious structural damage (such as buildings colapsing), smal throwable objects and trapping villains inside it. Once the job is done he can then liquify the magma once again and absorb it back, leaving burnt marks  where it once was, but it’s nothing that can’t be repaired easily. On it’s liquid state the magma can create serious injuries to whoever it comes across.

16. do they prefer taxis / buses / subways, etc? or none of the above?

Mila’s hasn’t really got particularly strong feelings about modes of transportation. The upside of public transit and ride-sharing is they get to think about and use their hands for whatever they like during the course of the trip, and that’s broadly applicable across the board. The people-watching available on a bus, train or streetcar is fun, though. The privacy of a taxi or Uber is sometimes preferred, but for the most part, Mila does enjoy being part of the hustle and bustle, the freedom of anonymity that comes with being one of many random people riding the bus or on the subway.

26. what are they most passionate about? what could they debate about for hours?

Working in Lori’s bookstore, Milaia has learned to love discussing literature, authors, and storytelling. There’s always been some interest in reading and stories, in discussing what they’d read or hearing about their friends’ and siblings’ latest reads, but their knowledge base has expanded, which is useful when you’re trying to convince a socialiser or window-shopper that, actually, we do have a few books that sound a lot like this old favourite you keep mentioning, complete with that depth of world-building I know is a major element in that author’s works, if you’d follow me to these shelves...

And if anyone’s brave (or foolish) enough to ask about the custom tea blends, they’d better have the time and the attention span to hear all about how Mila developed, tested and perfected it, and the ways it can help the mind and body, and how the take-home loose leaf parcels are 10% off if you drink a cup in-store -- 20% with proof of book purchase from the other counter across the store!

No, Mila doesn’t have kids, and it’s not something they’ve particularly envisioned for themselves yet, or planned for. They love children, but so far keeping the care and interaction to part-time has worked very well, and they don’t feel strongly enough to see the point in changing that right now, or in the near future. They do sometimes wish things with their own siblings were a little better, so they could spend a more significant amount of time with their nieces, nephews and niblings, but the time they do get is cherished... But, so is being able to say farewell knowing they can return to a quiet home where the only person they need to care for in that time is themself.

BIOGRAPHY:

Lori is the second out of four children (the first to be born in Kelowna) to Deshna and Kalyan Sridhar, previous proud owners of a small fabric factory back in India. They weren’t rich by any means but had enough to make a name out of themselves and provide for their family, especially once their firstborn son, Kian, had turned around two years old and the pair began to explore their business opportunities outside their home country. Kelowna, as it had a reputation of being a perfect location to grow and expand on ideas, became the decided destination of the family and they moved over right in time for Deshna to realize she was once again pregnant – thus Lori, then named Adya, came into the picture.

Around one year later Chadna, another girl was born into the family as the Sridhars kept growing their reputation and well being in the town; Kalyan traveling back and forth between countries to view their opportunities. The last child, Milaia, was first thought to be a third daughter but has in later years announced themselves to be agender. The Sridhars were doing good for themselves at this point, having a stable business to rely on and an older son to one day step up and carry the legacy over once the parents chose to retire – however, it was a happy tale with an abrupt ending that soon would send the parents down a dark path.

Around when Lori was thirteen years of age the parents were awoken with a phone call sharing the shattering news that their factory had burnt down the same day and there was hardly anything left to save. (A faulty, old machine turned out to be the cause.) Kalyan disappeared for close to three months trying to gather their income and looking to buy up another factory but quickly realized the cost of restarting would be too major and traveled back home with his head low. Deshna had spared no time sharing their unfortunate events with friends who, once Kalyan returned with further news, decided to band together to support the family out of a crisis. They had four children to look after and their money would only go so far – thus they started a fundraiser to keep everyone up on their feet until they could build up their business again.

The sympathy money came fast from soft-hearted people wishing to help a family in need, as well as people who suddenly heard about their previous fabric factory and wanted to put in an investment – along with an agreement they’d one day get their money back in profits. It never came to that. The overwhelming amount of money made the parents go glossy about their future, feeling as if they deserved to treat themselves to some of it and with the factory becoming a last-second thought, thinking they had time to invest later. They had so much of it anyway, right? Lori was the first out of them all to notice their parents' sudden reckless spending habits, everything from upgrading furniture to dragging their children off on smaller holidays. The money had been a gift, yes, but it wasn’t endless.

So, about a year down the line, people began to bring up the factory once more, asking when they’d hear further news or updates – especially those that had invested in this opportunity. That was when the parents realized they were back on the brink of poverty, having spent the majority on things they really didn’t need or simply craved at the moment. This was bad, and also the moment in which Lori overheard her parents work up a scam to get themselves out of this whole they had dug for themselves. Furious about her parents’ behaviors, Lori called their local newspaper and told them about the parents reckless spending and their plans – which, of course, led to an interesting morning for everyone who had turned their pockets inside and out to help.

A mere month later, Lori found herself kicked out of the house. Her parents wanted nothing to do with her, saying it was now her fault in case her siblings starved and that she should be ashamed of herself. Thankfully, Lori was brought in by her best friend’s mother and was allowed to stay until she had passed her fifteen birthday – in which she tried to regain contact with her family, only to figure out they had left town and her behind. Not wanting to freeload any longer, Lori got herself a job as a cashier and a studio apartment as she wrapped up school. At the age of eighteen she changed her name, which had been Adya up to this point in time, to be Lori fulltime as an attempt to escape the dark cloud her parents had left behind on their family name.

Today, Lori has regained contact with her youngest sibling Milaia and owns a bookstore named The Nook. The rest want nothing to do with her and equally so believe she’s the reason their family had to flee from Kelowna and start over. Lori tries to stay on top, bubbly and cheeky as they come – however, she has also developed tendencies to hoard memories and trinkets, something that nearly borders on compulsory behaviors of having a safe space and not having the mental energy to clean out the old before she brings in the new. Although nearing on forty she doesn’t have any clear directions of where she wants to go from here, beyond keeping her shop afloat and covering up her own mistakes at home.

The sunworn Tidecaller gave the querent a lopsided smile, his sea glass green eyes with a little less of its usual luster. “I dreamt of a gannet flying high above the water, diving down at the ocean’s surface at breakneck speed.” His tone was casual and pleasant, but the chipper cadence that was usually set was off by a few beats today. 

“It’s something I’ve seen time and time again, really. The water breaks as she plummets in, a fish hanging from her bill as she paddles along the surface… Only this time something found her, something dark and viscous, and wrapped itself around her before dragging her into the depths.”

Vaeliren: 

“Oh! Hah… I don’t dream anymore, I’m afraid,” the blindfolded elf said with a broad grin as he scrubbed one of his cheeks with a gloved hand. “Though I see plenty of them – as well as nightmares, of course. The last I was privy to was of a man in hospice, dreaming of his estranged son night after night as he pleaded to try and make things right.”

Vaeliren hummed faintly as he set his hand upon his thigh, his posture relaxing as he settled against a brick wall. “He played that same scene over and over in his head for a long time and it fed me well for a good long while.” A little bit of elongated incisor appeared beyond his lips as they pulled into a broader, almost rueful, smile. “The repentant and dying always do. Though I did him at least one kindness before he met his end: I made sure he never dreamt of that unmendable family ever again.”

Hazu’khota and Alukath:

“I don’t sleep!” The scarab knight’s sonorous voice said in a painfully cheerful manner as the nearby elf’s ears pasted back with outright distaste at the undead insectoid creature’s lack of volume control.

“…I don’t dream.”

“REALLY…” Hazu’khota replied dubiously, his lich-lit eyes narrowing behind the chitinous visor of his helm. “Because you sure mutter a lot in your sleep for one who doesn’t.”

Alukath’s expression grew vexed as his gaze snapped heavenward, a low hiss churling beyond his lips before looking down to his smaller counterpart. insufferable little beetle,”> the mage hunter grumbled in his native tongue.

“Well, I would, but you sure bring up this Milaia person enou—FFF.”

A leather-clad hand was promptly smacked over Hazu’s unnerving falsified maw, bringing him to silence at last while the scarab knight stared at him unfalteringly. Or at least until he unhinged his horrible insectoid maw and unleashed a stream of crawling black beetles all over Alukath’s hand.

Needless to say, the elf didn’t appreciate it.

Mirjana:

“Oh, darling, I’ve been undead for thousands of years. I can’t remember my last dream, much less my last nightmare, I’m afraid!” She then gestures for an arcane stone golem to trundle over to the questioner, a festive wreath of autumn leaves upon its “head” as it carried a tray of festive sweets. “Might I interest you in a pumpkin cookie, however? Or perhaps my favorite: Little meringues that look like bones!”

Strangerville (Strangerville Military State)

After the last Mother Plant invasion that took so many lives and infected many across the globe, the Hakzar Militia closed off all of Strangerville and declared themselves an independant state from the Seindu Kingdom. While anyone was free to leave Strangerville, provided a clean bill of health, none were allowed back in to prevent any Mother Plant contamination. A science branch dedicated to researching and destroying the Mother Plant once and for all was created: The Paranormal Botanical Garden. Taking information about the plant from experts around the world, the Garden works to prevent the Mother Plant from ever coming back!

Meanwhile, the military and its support was falling apart from both the inside and the outside. Salvadorada, which the Hakzars controlled and depended on for income, declared independence from the Hakzar military. A pollination draft for all amab individuals was put into effect to keep the population growing, but the process is deadly for humans, so all the humans left Strangerville in waves. Then the outside weapons company the Hakzars depended on for weapons and ammunition changed hands and ceased all weapons production. Strangerville is more vulnerable than it ever has been, and no closer to defeating the Mother Plant.

Oasis Springs (Faltal Corporation Braieforma Alliance)

It has been a turbulent generation for Oasis Springs. Once the Faltal Industry purchased the BraieTech factory, purchased all of Oasis Springs, and started producing weapons and tech for Strangerville, the Braie family was forced out. Matriarch Harp Braie fought against this hard, as her family lived on this land and in their house for six generations now. But her daughter Mirah Braie offered to work for the company if she could keep the ancestral house, which soured her reputation for her family. But Mirah had a plan. By buddying up to the company heads and becoming best friends with the heiress, Chaeya Faltal, she worked her way up to a high position in the company. She even paired up Chaeya with a friend and friendly start-up entrepenuer, Fynnigan Asi. After Chaeya and Fynnigan married and had children, Chaeya decided to give Mirah control of the company to focus on her family, and that was when Mirah pounced. Mirah and her husband were squirrelling away money and slowly buying back the properties of Oasis Springs, with the Faltal home and factory being the last. In ownership of them all, she fired every Faltal from the company and ceased all weapons production, taking the company back. Mirah then joined the Braieforma Alliance to protect the land deeds so something like this could never happen again. Harp Braie was at least able to come home and live her last days, but Mirah was more than ready to sacrifice her family placement if it meant her family could have their home back.

Salvadorada (Strangerville Military State Independent)

The small country of Salvadorada was constantly exploited by outside sources. Mostly for the excavation and appropriation of historical artifacts found in the jungle. The people lived on the edge of poverty for generations. During the Great Land Grab, the Hakzar Military took control of Salvadorada, already having a heavy presence there, but when the lockdown of the Strangerville Military State began, Salvadorada did not have to adhere to the lockdown as well. But it did adhere to the pollination draft, which killed scores of humans, as well as the elderly Sixam aliens who lived there. With the help of some outside forces urging not to take violence into their own hands, the people decided to use sneaky beauricratic tactics to take back their land. A small team of former royals and former Hakzars managed to change online records to reflect new ownership before going public with Salvadorada’s independence. With the country freed and given back to the people, a democratic election was held and the trafficking of artifacts ceased. Many countries lost their income from this takeover, but many vowed to pay back and even assist Salvadorada with its own excavation efforts.

Henford-on-Bagley (The Henford Elective)

The change of government in Henford has been a nightmare to the long time residents. After patriarch Asher Bongrin, the last protector of the farmlands, passed away, his sister, Iris Bongrin, made herself Elective Princess, and started a monarchy with a strange process. All born in Henford is eligible for the throne, but the people must decide who they want. So, all the children were taken to a farming boarding school to learn the ways of the land and decide who amongst them would be the next leader, rather than rely on bloodlines. Many older residents, not standing what their home was becoming, fled and moved away. Leaving some wealthy beurocrats to move in and have children in Henford to become eligible for the elective.

Once the older teens became adults, the first voting in the Elective began, and charismatic Annabelle Bongin, who wanted to be a queen since she was a little girl, won and moved into the palace right away. Her rule has just begun, and she’s learning the process for herself first hand. But she has many ideas for her land. And the world. Lots and lots of ideas.

Only a handful of people want to end this process. Rowan Bongrin, Asher’s youngest, was hoping to win the Elective and dismantle it completely. But he failed, and wasn’t elected. He’s partnered with a woman who claims she’s here to undo the Elective as well, but who is to say if this will pan out. Even here, where time marches slowly on to no one’s notice, the future is very uncertain.
