ハンナ・アレントは、『人間の条件』の中で、ガリレオが天体望遠鏡という「道具」を用いて地動説を証明したことの意義を、最大限に強調している。――なぜか? 「それ以前人間は、自分が肉体と精神の目で眺めたものに忠実でありさえすれば、リアリティと真理は、おのずから感覚と理性にその姿を現すであろうと信じていたが、結局、その間、人間はずっと欺かれていたことになる。」 一体、天が動いているのか、地が動いているのか? 感じるままに世界を受け止めることが正しいのか、それとも、頭の中で構想した姿こそが、この世界の真相か?――そんな論争は、実は不毛だったのである。なぜなら、世界は、理性と感性にプラスして、道具を用いなければ、決して明かすことのない本当の姿を隠しているのだから。その極小の場所から極大の場所に至るまで。生身の人間は、この事実を突きつけられた瞬間から、世界のリアリティから疎外されることになった。 これがアレントの主張である。
