-hello from the void
Eldritch Steve
Part 13
-
Karen Wheeler is not Stupid, though at times she certainly feels like it. She certainly feels it on her fifth Anniversy, just after Nancy was born and she waited up all night for her husband, Nancy at a babysitters and the fancy dinner she made going cold as the candles she lit burned themselves out. Ted had been gone three days, a surprise business trip he had forgotten to tell her about. He hadn't acknowledged their Anniversery either.
But Karen is far from stupid, she may have gotten only a Mrs. Degree from her college experience but she'd had gotten there with high grades and two classes left for her degree in nursing.
So, she notices when Mrs. Harrington suddenly has a son only a year older than her Nancy, she notices there is only a passing resemblance between them and none with Mr. Harrington.
At first she thinks, and is not the only one, that Mrs Harrington, had an Affair for a child her husband couldn't provide, at one point she even considered that Mrs Harrington bought the boy to raise him.
And then Nancy brought him home and Karen knows. She's not stupid, not unobservant. She learns very quickly after that first introduction that Steve Harrington is not human, at least not any more than Wayne Munson is. They are alike in that Karen realises.
But while Wayne's time in their world hardened him to humanity except for his nephew, Steve's Softened him. There is a gentleness to Steve that Karen's instincts tell her do not belong, instincts that tell her to flee, take her daughters and son and run and pray that Steve does not give chase.
Her observations, however, tell her that Steve will die before harm comes to her children and for better or worse she has decided to trust what she can see over what she feels. Even if eventually Steve harms Nancy or Mike she knows that he won't hurt Holly, he'll protect her before all others, in a way Karen believes that Steve considers Holly his own child. She knows this in her heart, has prepared that if anything should happen to her Holly will go to Steve over Ted, over Nancy, over her entire family.
Steve gets Holly, Karen made sure of that. Steve might be some kind of monster but he has a soft spot for children, her Holly especially even after Nancy chose Jonathan.
Karen knows Steve Harrington is a monster, just like Wayne Munson is.
But she knows he won't harm her children.
Karen Wheeler is not Stupid, she can't help trusting Steve to keep her children safe, she knows he won't fail.

AEW Fake Rankings, 10/20/2024
Men's singles division - babyfaces
Will Ospreay
Darby Allin
Ricochet
Jay White
Mark Briscoe (ROH men's world champion)
Daniel Garcia
Orange Cassidy
Kyle O'Reilly
HOOK
Katsuyori Shibata
Men's singles division - heels
Jon Moxley (AEW men's world champion)
Kazuchika Okada (AEW continental champion)
Adam Page
Konosuke Takeshita (AEW international champion)
Christian Cage
Jack Perry (AEW TNT champion)
Chris Jericho
Kyle Fletcher
Shelton Benjamin
Roderick Strong
Unranked: Aaron Solo, Angelico, AR Fox, Atlantis Jr.*, Big Bill, Bryan Keith, Hologram, Jeff Jarrett, Johnny TV, Juice Robinson, Komander, Lio Rush*, Minoru Suzuki*, Nick Wayne, Rocky Romero*, Serpentico/Jon Cruz, The Butcher
Jobbers: Alpha Zo*, BEEF*, Chris Nastyy*, Cody Chhun*, Jack Cartwheel*, Joe Keys*, Marcus Mathers*, Matt Brannigan*, Olumide*, Ryan Clancy*, TJ Crawford
* Not listed on AEW's official roster webpage
Moxley has declared war on the AEW roster (or at least the men's locker room), and it feels like he'll spend at least the next six months clobbering wave after wave of "complacent" midcarders. Darby Allin is clearly being set up as a major destination for this saga, but I'm not certain if he'll be Moxley's first big challenger, or if he'll be saved for the end like Sting in 1997. There's also foreshadowing of Orange Cassidy and Daniel Garcia stepping up, and I think Hook and Kyle O'Reilly would fit in that role as well. But only one guy can get the rub of dethroning Mox, and we'll just have to wait and see who that will be.
Heading into Full Gear on November 23, the other top programs look to be Jay White vs. Adam Page, Ospreay vs. Fletcher, Takeshita vs. Fletcher, Jericho vs. Briscoe, Garcia vs. Perry, Swerve Strickland vs. Shelton Benjamin, and Adam Cole vs. MJF. I expect Hook vs. Christian Cage will be a thing too, but right now it's just an educated guess that Christian is the one who attacked Hook's father.
Men's tag team division - babyfaces
The Acclaimed - Max Caster & Anthony Bowens
FTR - Dax Wheeler & Cash Wheeler
Private Party - Isiah Kassidy & Marq Quen
Dustin Rhodes (ROH trios champion) & Sammy Guevara (ROH tag team champions)
The Outrunners - Truth Magnum* & Turbo Floyd*
Men's tag team division - heels
The Young Bucks - Matt Jackson & Nick Jackson (AEW tag team champions)
Grizzled Young Veterans - James Drake* & Zack Gibson*
MxM Collection - Mason Madden* & Mansoor*
Matt Taven & Mike Bennett
Brian Cage (ROH men's television champion) & Lance Archer
Iron Savages - Bulk Bronson* & Beefcake Boulder*
* Not listed on AEW's official roster webpage
The state of the tag division is this: The Bucks are heel champions with no one to fight. The Acclaimed haven't ever gotten a clean two-on-two title shot all year, but they don't seem to be in a hurry to get it anymore. FTR and Private Party already lost to the Bucks. The Outrunners, MxM, and the Iron Savages are all cool as hell, but they're comedy acts that can't beat anybody. I don't think GYV have been around since they got upset by the Outrunners, which may be a sign that they aren't going to be back. Rhodes-Guevara and Taven-Bennett are big deals in ROH but off the radar in AEW. Don Callis has put Cage and Archer together to chase the tag title, but I don't see that going anywhere as long as the champions are also heels.
I'd like to see Private Party rack up a big win to get back into the title hunt, but I don't see why that should turn out any differently than the title match they just lost last week. So it feels like the division is going nowhere, marking time until the Golden Lovers (Kenny Omega and Kota Ibushi) are ready to feud with the Bucks. Which, I'd be fine with doing that feud, but not if it means keeping the division in deep freeze for a couple more months.
Men's trios division - babyfaces
Malakai Black & Brody King & Buddy Matthews
Action Andretti & Dante Martin & Darius Martin
Dark Order - Evil Uno & John Silver & Alex Reynolds
Men's trios division - heels
Claudio Castagnoli & Wheeler Yuta & PAC (AEW trios champions)
La Faccion Ingobernable - Rush & Dralistico & The Beast Mortos
Premier Athletes - Tony Nese & Josh Woods & Ariya Daivari
Moxley's running buddies control the trios title, which works out well since all the undercard scrubs they keep beating up can then demand a match and get clobbered in a trios match. This seems to be giving Dark Order and Action-Darius-Dante something to work with, even if it's not much and they have no hope of winning. I think Daniel Garcia and Private Party would be a stronger trio to go after the title, but they're not done yet with Jack Perry and the Young Bucks.
The House of Black is remarkably well protected for a group that never figures into any major storylines. Are they being built up to take the belts from Claudio, Pac, and Yuta? Could Julia Hart return to counter Marina Shafir? Who knows.
I stuck LFI in the trios division because I really don't know what those three guys are going to do, now that they're all in the same team with Jake Roberts. I don't think AEW knows either, so that'll probably lead to a bunch of throwaway trios matches. Hopefully they can at least win those matches, which would keep them ahead of Neese-Woods-Daivari.
Women's division - babyfaces
Britt Baker
Willow Nightingale
Jamie Hayter
Kris Statlander
Anna Jay
Queen Aminata
Nyla Rose
Yuka Sakazaki
Lady Frost*
Trish Adora*
Women's division - heels
Mariah May (AEW women's world champion)
Mercedes Mone (AEW TBS champion, STRONG women's champion)
Kamille
Serena Deeb
Taya Valkyrie
Emi Sakura
Harley Cameron
Robyn Renegade*
Jobbers: Amira*, Brooke Havok*, Zoey Lynn*
* Not listed on AEW's official roster webpage
You'd think Marina Shafir would be running rough-shod over the women's division to lock up its top title the way Moxley has with the men. The problem is that moving the world title would disrupt the Mariah May/Toni Storm/Mina Shirakawa storyline. I guess Shafir could crush Mone, but I don't know if that would do either of them any good. Sooner or later, though, it will become clear that Marina is the woman to beat, which will get awkward if there are too many champions that can't beat her.
As it is, the big programs for the women right now are Mariah vs. Anna Jay, Mone and Kamille vs. Statlander, and, uh, Jamie Hayter vs. Penelope Ford? It feels like there should be more going on right now. But I don't know where Britt and Willow are headed, Deonna Purrazzo and Taya Valkyrie keep doing pre-taped promos about nothing, and Toni Storm is still roaming the world pretending she doesn't know who Mariah May is. After five years AEW's women's roster finally has some real depth, but that only gets the division so far when it only gets 3-4 matches per week.
No televised AEW matches in over 30 days: Abadon, Athena (ROH women's world champion), Brandon Cutler, Diamante, Lee Moriarty (ROH pure champion), Marhsall Von Erich* (ROH trios champion), Preston Vance, Red Velvet (ROH women's television champion), Ross Von Erich* (ROH trios champion), Shane Taylor, Shawn Dean
* Not listed on AEW's official roster webpage
Not much new to report about the wrestlers officially signed to AEW but almost exclusively appearing on Ring of Honor. They're on the shows, they're getting work, it's just that almost nobody hears about it. The worst part is most of these names can't even get booked on an ROH pay-per-view.
No televised AEW or ROH matches in over 30 days: Anthony Ogogo, Angelo Parker, Austin Gunn, Bishop Kaun, Bobby Dutch, Colten Gunn, Deonna Purrazzo, Griff Garrison, Hikaru Shida, Jay Lethal, Kip Sabian, Leila Grey, Lee Johnson, Marina Shafir, Matt Menard, Peter Avalon, Swerve Strickland, Thunder Rosa, Toa Liona, Toni Storm, Vincent Marseglia
The bad news is that I don't know why most of these wrestlers haven't been in the ring lately, but the good news is most of them haven't been completely MIA. Some were around in late August/early September, some are on the show right now but not wrestling, and some are booked for the next couple of weeks. That's what I like to see.
No televised AEW or ROH matches in over 90 days: Colt Cabana, Danhausen, Kiera Hogan, Madison Rayne, Mercedes Martinez, Penta El Zero Miedo, Powerhouse Hobbs, Rey Fenix, Ricky Starks
These are the wrestlers I'm worried about. Colt and Madison seem to be transitioning to backstage roles and/or semi-retirement, so that's okay. But I have no idea why Tony Khan would have Danhausen, Starks, Penta, and Fenix on the payroll and not book them. I realize Penta and Fenix are reportedly planning to go to WWE, but that doesn't mean you can use them to do a few jobs on the way out. Hobbs is supposed to be medically cleared, so I don't understand why he wasn't around for the big Don Callis Family promo on October 16. Hogan and Martinez seem to have fallen off the face of the earth.
No televised AEW or ROH matches in 2024: Adam Cole, Kota Ibushi, Michael Nakazawa, Miro, Penelope Ford, Scorpio Sky, Tay Melo
Cole and Ford just got back and should be returning to the ring imminently. Ibushi has already returned to the ring in Japan and I figure he'll be back in an AEW ring soon enough. I've heard Melo is training to return from maternity leave so it's probably just a matter of time. Nakazawa seems to just be a backstage guy at this point. It was recently reported that Miro requested his release, but evidently he hasn't gotten it. AEW was running hype videos for Scorpio a few months ago but then dropped it, so I have no idea.
Part-time/semi-retired: Alex Abrahantes, Karen Jarrett, Luther, Mark Sterling, Nigel McGuinness, Paul Wight, Prince Nana, Rebel, Satnam Singh, Sonjay Dutt, Stokely Hathaway
I suppose I'll have to move Bryan Danielson into this list, once he's gotten his neck issues worked out and if he can still go on a part-time basis.
Inactive
Adam Copeland (left leg - tibia fracture)
Angel Ortiz (right shoulder - pectoralis tear)
Bandido (left arm - wrist fracture)
Bryan Danielson (storyline injuries - probably to set up legit neck surgery)
Chuck Taylor (left ankle - necrosis)
Eddie Kingston (right leg - tibia fracture, ACL/meniscus tear)
Julia Hart (shoulder - unspecified injury)
Keith Lee (undisclosed injury)
Kenny Omega (diverticulitis)
Killswitch (double pneumonia)
Leyla Hirsch (elbow - dislocation)
Mark Davis (left arm - wrist fracture)
Matt Sydal (right foot - malunion fractures)
MJF (filming Happy Gilmore 2)
Nick Comoroto (hip resurfacing)
Riho (work visa delays)
Ruby Soho (pregnant)
Samoa Joe (filming Twisted Metal season 2)
Saraya (storyline - "incapacitated")
Skye Blue (right ankle - fracture)
The Blade (lower back - herniated disc)
Trent Beretta (neck - hardware removal surgery)
Wardlow (knee - unspecified injury)
I haven't heard any significant updates on any of these wrestlers. Lately it seems like a report will come out that so-and-so is medically cleared, and then so-and-so still sits in the twilight zone for months before they come back. So even if there was news I don't think it would help us estimate when a wrestler will return to the ring.

Cherry Bomb: Chap. 1
For clarification, Milven is purely platonic and events from Stranger Things 3 did not happen, such as Jim Hopper's death and the Byers and Eleven moving away.
June 14, 1985
"Roth... Roth...." the voice of Mike Wheeler said coming from the comm.
[Y/N] groaned and picked it up. "What you want, Blackbird?"
"You want to come over and play some D & D? With the rest of the party? Over." He asked.
[Y/N] [L/N] had lived next to the Wheeler family since she was five. Her family had moved there for a change of pace as it was a small town and very different from Indianapolis. She and Mike had grown up as window neighbors.
"But my elvan archer will die! It's happened every time. So much for me trying to be a female Legolas. Over."
"Then, bring your other characters. I know you created like twenty, so you can continue on playing with us for ten hours. Over." He told her.
[Y/N] could faintly hear the sound of snickers and giggles from the other end followed by the normal "Shut up!" from Mike. She sighed to herself.
"What will I be getting out of this again? Over."
"Time with the greatest people you have ever known? Over." Mike paused before adding. "We have food. Blackbird out."
"I'll be there in a minute. Roth out." [Y/N] put the comm down and left the room.
She didn't hear the endless teasing from Eleven, Max, Lucas, and Dustin. Or any of what Mike said in retaliation of their teasing and mochery. Instead, while that was going on, she hopped down the stairs to her mom. At the moment, it was just [Y/N], her mom, and her cat at the house (her parents were seperated, but they both liked the small town life of Hawkins, Indiana).
"Hey, momma, can I go over to the Wheeler's right now? Mike invited me over to play Dungeons & Dragons with the party." She asked finding her mom in the kitchen baking some deserts.
"Sure, sweetie. Just be back by six. You're father will be over here to pick you up for the weekend." Her mother, [Mother Name], replied.
It was the Friday after school let out for the summer and the first thing the party wanted to do was play Dungeons & Dragons. Of course some people (Max Mayfield) resented that notion seeing as it was summer which meant no more school and some more beach.
"Okay. Love you! Bye!" [Y/N] kissed her mom's cheek and zoomed out the door to her neighbors house.
She knocked on the door and Nancy opened the door for her. The upcoming senior at Hawkins High sighed before allowing the young girl that hadn't been involved with anything weird yet into their house. One thing the party, Jim Hopper, Joyce Byers, Nancy Wheeler, Jonathon Byers, and the Scoup Troop all agreed on was to leave the girl out of it. Out of all of it. [Y/N] went down towards Mike's basement where she found the boys setting up the pieces at the table and the girls were setting up snacks such as chips, some bite sized deserts, and soda.
"Hi, [Y/N]." Eleven said.
"Hi, El." [Y/N] said coming over to the two girls.
"[Y/N], which character are you playing?" Mike said looking through the folder labeled [Y/N]'s characters.
"Uh... actually... I wanted to try to be... a... uh..." then the girl mumbled what she wanted to do.
Max Mayfield and Eleven smirked (as they had heard what she said). Dustin Henderson asked for her to speak up, so they could hear her. All they got out of her was a smear of red across her face. Now that the boys were staring at her and her two only female friends were smirking, she instantly regretted every decision she had ever made.
"You know what? Just forget it. I'll use my elva-."
"She wants a chance as Dungeon Master, but she is too nervous to say anything to you four." Max said cutting her friend off.
[Y/N] tried to cover her face with her hands as she waited for the laughter to come right afterwards. It was a stupid idea. A stupid, silly thing to suggest she do. Way to make a fool out of you, [Y/N]. the [H/C] haired girl thought to herself before shying away from her friends.
"Since when do you know how to be Dungeon Master?" Dustin asked as he and Lucas sneakily (not that sly though) glanced over at Mike.
"It can't be that much difficult than putting on shows with action figures and dolls while my little cousins intervene about what the different characters could do." And Mike taught me.
"I say we give her a shot. I'm tired of doing the same thing ever single time." Max said.
"We don't do the same thing every time!" Lucas retorted back at his girlfriend.
"It's the same thing, but different outcomes based on the die roll." Eleven agreed.
"Just let her be dungeon master, guys. For one day. I actually want to see where she'll go with it. I'll just be a Gnome Thief." Mike told them.
"I don't have a problem with that." Will Byers added making his first statement in the conversation.
"Go on, [Y/N]." Dustin said glancing at the seat next to Mike. "You can sit there."
[Y/N] didn't see the glare Mike sent Dustin as she sat down in the seat. Eleven and Max got some food before sitting down.
"So, are we ready?" she asked them.
"Yeah. Let's see what you got." Lucas told her.
"To be clear, this is going to be totally -."
"Just start already, [Y/N]." Mike interrupted her. "Yes, we're well aware this is 'Geek Improv'."
Eleven looked from Mike to [Y/N]. As soon as she started to go to school with the party, she met [Y/N] almost as soon as she stepped into the door. And instantly, she understood why Mike hadn't been able to return her feeling. And now, watching the two of them, it reminded Eleven of why that was. Time passed and they all realized how much more involved she was with the details than Mike was and they all knew the adventure they were on was all sprouted from her mouth like bullshit. Because it was. She was making it up as she went along.
"You have reached the end of your quest. But your quest is not over. Instead, one of your party members carries a dark secret. One of them is actually the Great Darkness that vows to shrall the land in eternal night. You hear the cackle of what sounds like the Wicked Witch of the West Hehehe! As the sound bounces off the walls of the cave, you wonder where and who the sound is coming from. But it's too late. Your hear it say 'It's too late for you. Hehehehe!' And the voice is coming from-."
"[Y/N]," Karen Wheeler, Mike's and Nancy's mom, said walking down into the basement, "your mom says your dad is waiting for you. Time to go."
Karen Wheeler went back upstairs and Dustin leaned over to Mike, "Since when does your mom come down here?"
Mike simply shrugged. "Can we finish this really quickly?"
[Y/N] shook her head getting up from her seat. "Sorry. Dad's impatient as it is, and we're supposed to go to Chicago for the weekend. I'll be back Wednesday though. We can finish it then. Have a good weekend, Blackbird. Fellow geeks." She saluted them.
"Bye, Roth. Have fun with your dad." Mike said as she went back up the stairs.
"Dude!" Max exclaimed once she was out of earshot.
"What?!" Mike fired back.
"Do you two really have to act like that?" Max asked him.
"Like what?" he asked her.
"Like that! Two love sick idiots. Why don't you just ask her out?" asked Max.
"He can't."
"He's tried."
"Countless times."
"Failed countless times."
"Stuck in the friend zone, is he." Dustin said in the voice of Yoda.
"He's not that stuck. She likes him back. Right, El?" Max asked looking at her female friend for assistance.
"She does." Eleven nodded her head in agreement. "Just ask her out."
"Do it. When she comes back." Max told him.
"Jeez, okay, I will." Mike told him.
Wednesday came, and he commed [Y/N]'s radio. "Roth... Roth... Roth...."
No answer. Usually she would pick up after the second or third Rorh, but silence filled the radio. He tried again thinking her mom may have cleaned up her room while she was away (it has happened before). Silence.
"[Y/N], you there? Blackbird here ... trying to talk to you. Over." Silence.
This was weird. It was strange. Even when she was angry with him, she never metaphorically left him on read. She would radio in that she was angry and didn't want to talk and there would be a "I DON'T WANT TO TALK TO YOU! I HATE YOU!" followed afterward that she didn't really mean. And that's when he heard shouting, yelling, and screaming from next door. It sounded like her parents.
Mike got out of his basement and along with his family and the rest of the street watched the scene play out between [Mother] and [Father] who hadn't spoken or saw one another in months.
"What do you mean you lost her? She was here yesterday! She called telling me she was back in Hawkins!" [Mother] yelled.
"I went to get food, and then she's gone! I checked everywhere for her! She's not here! And I'm pretty sure she didn't go back to Chicago! So, yeah I lost her! But I didn't lose her OKAY? She's missing! Gone! And it's not my fault! Dear god, why would you think it was my fault?" [Father] yelled back.
"It wouldn't be the first time you thought that." [Mother] mumbled before shouting, "If you didn't lose her, then help me find her! Help me find my daughter! Before something awful happens to her!"
[Y/N] was missing? Mike looked over at Nancy who was looking at him back. They both knew that the Upside Down had a part to play in the disappearance of [Y/N] [L/N].
What Netflix Original would the characters of Stranger Things watch the most often?
Eleven - Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (Eleven would compare the events of her life to Sabrina's events in her life when they are sorta similar)
Mike - Orange is the New Black (gives me Mike vibes)
Max - Sex Education (gives me Max Mayfield vibes)
Will - A Series of Unfortunate Events (i feel like he would have read the books in elementary school, so he felt obligated to watch the show)
Lucas - Lost in Space (i didn't know what to pick for Lucas, so I just picked something random)
Dustin - Voltron Legendary Defender (Dustin has always given me vibes that he's a cartoon watcher type of TV person)
Steve - Daybreak (gives me Steve vibes)
Nancy - The Worst Witch (this was an accident. Nancy didn't want to watch it, but saw the trailer, thought it was interesting, and watches it afterwards).
Robin - Disenchantment (doesn't it just scream Robin at you?)
Jonathon - You (he would have heard about it from Nancy who wanted to watch it and he got hooked)
Joyce - Santa Clarita Diet (funny zombie humor)
Hopper - The Crown (this would have started off as something that both Hopper and Eleven watched together as a sort of father-daughter show or whatever, but he got hooked really, really fast)

Mileven post-S2 fanfiction recommendation list: PART IV
Tumblr media
This is a continuation of my ever-growing Mileven Fanfiction Rec List (see instalments I, II, and III). If your fanfic isn’t featured, apologies. Message me and we’ll amend that grievance in the next rec list instalment.
* marks the ongoing stories.
canon:
interludes by veausy: “They stood like that, dimly lit by the hallway lamp, until Hopper cleared his throat. “Mike,” she breathed.”
+ its sequel: idylls by veausy: ““You should get a Mike,” El offered. Didn’t everyone have one?”
snowbound by hannahberrie: “When El invites Mike to spend the day at the cabin, Hopper finds himself supervising a sleepover he didn’t sign up for.”
.. ._.. ___ …_ . _.__ ___ .._ (i love you) by AriaCessair: “El wants to learn about kisses, but the end result is much more than she expected.”
anything short of a miracle by youheldyourbreath: “Mike has spent the last year in abject agony over losing Eleven. And then, he gets her back.”
the 436 kiss by youheldyourbreath: “Mike and El have 435 kisses that are short, sweet and perfunctory. Kiss 436 is not that kind of embrace.”
we were just kids when by DarkBeauty_890: “Hopper arches a brow, giving Mike a once over. He sucks in another puff of his cigarette, before stubbing it out and scratching his nose, “Elle’s not here. She and Red went out to go see a movie about an hour ago.” Mike clears his throat and doesn’t break their locked gaze, “I’m actually here because I wanted to talk to you.””
the invasion* by ValBirch: “Hawkins, 1985. On the day of her first birthday in Hawkins, El starts having nosebleeds, even when she’s not using her powers. That night, Will’s nightmares return, but they’re different this time. Everything is different this time.”
winter, spring, summer, fall* by returntosaturn: “A collection of first experiences for El during her first year in Hawkins, outside of the lab.”
radio static* by Archer of Ecclesia : ““Mike,” El had scarcely noticed her seizure of the radio. Garble filled her ears. Her grip around the radio tightened as she quickly switched it off, breathing shallowly. She almost threw the device across the room when the garble continued, and worsened, more severe than ever. Or, a new creature lurks in Hawkins, Indiana, this time, closer to home than ever.”
to find you again* by MuffinLove03: “Finding her was only the beginning. In a town still vulnerable to inter-dimensional threats and sketchy government agents, it's going to take a lot to keep her safe and bring her home. But he was prepared to do whatever it took. He promised.”
the artemis institute* by Arnarkusaga: “Starting from the night the gate was closed and detailing the events that follow, including unexpected doings at the Hawkin’s Lab, and a mysterious underground resistance movement.”
kissing cousins by pathvain_aelien: “Mr. Clarke at the Snow Ball.”
+ its sequel: eleven’s story* by pathvain_aelien.
snowed in by luxuriousvoyage11: “A bad snow storm makes for an unexpected sleepover at the Byers.”
only this by Val_Creative: “Eleven and Mike and their relationship through Hopper’s eyes.”
a ghostly encounter* by PlaidDino: “The boys (and Max) go Trick-Or-Treating on Halloween, but these Ghostbusters find themselves being followed by someone in a ghost costume.”
the best night of your life bywheezy: “Her lips are parted in an almost smile and Mike sends a prayer he won’t have to wait 353 days to kiss them ever again.”
funny business by rainingcatsandkisses: ““On one condition” Hopper had said when El had asked if Mike could walk her home instead. “You come straight home. I’ll be waiting at the turn by Pinewood. And,” he’d added darkly, staring at Mike, “No funny business from you, Mr. Wheeler. I will know.””
i think we’re alone now by cali-chan (girls_are_weird): ““Listen, I’m no t supposed to leave you two alone here. Hopper will have my head if he finds out, so just… behave, okay?””
day two hundred and five by Someone_else_before: “In which Mike has a birthday, El has a daydream, and Hopper says, “Soon.””
eleven, mike, and the flu by loti_miko: “She quickly put the blindfold over her eyes, her surroundings going dark, and in an instant she was at Mike’s. He had his eyes closed; his cheeks flushed bright pink, a colour quite distinguishable even in the darkness of The Void.”
el byers and the secret crush by Someone_else_before: “Eleven moves in with the Byers’, learns to adapt to ordinary Hawkins life, and tries to figure out why Mike has been acting so oddly since their kiss in the cafeteria.” [post S1]
+ its sequel: dustin henderson and the secret crush by Someone_else_before: “Dustin is head over heels for a girl in his class, and he asks Eleven to use her powers to help him in his quest to win her over.”

The Hawk // Stranger Things
Summary: As the older brother of Nancy Wheeler the reader is a little overprotective especially when Nancy’s so called changed boyfriend is at the centre of the problem. Discovering him in the middle of his artwork on your place of work you decide to teach him a lesson.
Characters: older brother!Reader (MALE) x sister!Nancy Wheeler, Steve Harrington, Tommy H, Carol, Mr. Harrington (mentioned)
Words: 1211
Disclaimer: I do not own Stranger Things or the characters involved. Nor do I own the gifs or images that may appear. I do however own the reader.
Warnings: Swearing, fighting, angst and fluff
A/N: This came about because in high school I got bullied, came home sobbing, brother and his friends came in and saw me sobbing. I never knew what went down but the bullies never came at me again because I went from on protective brother to six bodyguards and even when they graduated they literally reqcruited someone in my grade to protect me. There’s no greater feeling than having an older brother fiercely protect you and I respect my brother so completely because of this.

ASK US A QUESTION LIST
Tumblr media
You had the lucrative job as the manager of the Hawk which was both a burden and gift especially when it came to your little brother Mike. To your mother’s chagrin you decided to take a year off from college to earn money and that came in the form of the theatre. It wasn’t a surprise you were the manager when you had been working there since you were fifteen.
You had parked the beat up second hand car in the back parking lot wearing your new uniform you had been given the job of designing. You had pushed the keys to your car in the secret pocket of your silver grey backpack as you walked down the alley.
You groaned seeing Carol, Tommy and your little sister’s boyfriend Steve standing on the roof of the car. In the middle of spray painting in red on the announcement board above the entrance, Nancy the slut Wheeler, you took in a deep breathe before yanking Steve Harrington off his car.
“What the hell?” Steve exclaimed landing hard on his back beside his car. He smirked seeing you above him, “Well if it isn’t Nancy’s older brother.”
“I thought you were her boyfriend.”
“While she’s fucking Jonathan the creep Byers?” Tommy inserted. With a swift turn on your feet you slammed your fist into his nose sending him crashing to the ground.
You promptly turned back to Steve with a growl coming from deep in your chest before you slammed your heel into his side. A distinct crunch from a rib satisfying you but you pulled him up by his shirt collar and slammed him back into ground with a groan. You turned when Carol weakly kicked you.
“I don’t hit girls.” You coldly spoke, “But I sure can tell the town you’ve had a nose job, two abortions and been gifting the male teens lots of STDs.”
“You broke my nose.” Tommy groaned.
“Harrington, you stay the FUCK away from my little sister or I will beat the shit out of you. My sister is not a slut. Just because Jonathan and Nancy were together does not mean she was betraying you. For fuck sakes you piece of shit I don’t get the mentality.” You shook your head pinching the bridge of your nose, “A girl’s a virgin she’s called a prude. A girl has sex once and she’s labelled a slut. A male, aka you and Tommy boy here, loses his virginity and he’s slapped on the back and congratulated. I think you guys need chastity belt.”
“I’ll do what I want.” Steve grunted struggling to sit up.
“You even step one foot near my sister and I swear to god I will cut your dick off. If I had even a penny for every girl you’ve been with… seriously you get around so much Harrington I could buy all the businesses in town.”
Carol went still before you noticed Nancy and Jonathan so you slammed your foot into Steve’s broken rib and went inside grabbing the phone to call your boss. He wouldn’t be happy about the vandalism and more thank likely would be pressing charges against Harrington until he was bought by Mr. Harrington.
“Sir?” You asked once your boss had answered the phone, “I’m afraid I’m going to need you to come down.”
“What? Why?” He demanded.
“Carol, Tommy and Steve decided to use the billboard to make their own announcement.” You said while your boss cussed making sounds as he was on his way.

“You definitely saw them?”

“I was just turning the corner when I saw them.”
“Fucking children.” He cussed hanging up.
You watched as the sound of sirens came before everyone took off running. You were mighty pissed when your boss came in counting cash in his hand two hours later. You knew that it was from Mr. Harrington.

“Don’t look at me like that.” Your boss snapped, “Besides I won’t press charges when you punched them. Besides Steve got beat up.”
“Good.” You muttered.
“Get the ladder and clean that shit off.” He huffed grabbing an envelope and placing the money inside.
You did as he asked before you started scrubbing the paint off the white board seething that your building got vandalized. You prided yourself on doing a good job and keeping things in great shape so it wounded you when someone did this kind of shit.
“Let me.”
You stiffened looking down at Harrington standing there sheepish and with a few bruises surrounding his so called pretty face. You turned your back metaphorically and literally to continue scrubbing the words off.
“Seriously, I’m sorry.”
“Go home.” You coldly spoke barely thanking him when he lifted the hot bucket of soapy water to you, “Your Dad paid for you literally.”
“You’re right you know.”
“What?” You snapped, “I seriously don’t understand how you think because you’ve been given the profound crown of Hawkins High that you can do this kind of shit.”
“You’re a guy.” Steve stated.
“With respect! That’s my little sister!” You shouted jumping off the ladder to glare into his eyes, “I’m three years older than her. When she got hurt I helped her even if it was my fucking fault. I know that a pretentious , stuck up, entitled prick wouldn’t understand. No wonder you’re a only child. You’re parents don’t want another prick like you.”
“You’re right.” Steve sighed, “Look let me clean this up and I’ll leave your sister alone.”
“The sad thing is Steve, I don’t have the right to tell you that.” You replied shoving the sponge into his chest leaving a large wet mark, “That’s Nancy’s decision. Not mine and she’d kill me if I didn’t let her decide.”
You left to return back inside while Steve scrubbed his mistake off the board and hopefully he wouldn’t be an idiot again. You doubted he could refrain from the idiocy.
Your head looked up as Nancy stood in the doorway knocking on your door. Her eyes trailing on the blue walls your room had had since your parents knew they were pregnant with a boy.
“Come in.” You nodded to the bed shoving the pamphlets aside.
Nancy picked one up staring at the bold words on the slender paper with the image of one of the colleges you were looking at. Nancy was quiet as she ran a finger on the image.
“Thanks.” She spoke barely looking up at you.
“What do you mean?”

“I know you punched Tommy H in the face and beat Steve up.” Nancy mumbled looking up at you, “You didn’t have to.”
“I’m your big brother Nance.” You chuckled, “It’s my job to protect you even if you can do it yourself.”
“I know. You broke Jason Whistler fingers when he called me a stuck up prissy bitch.”
“He deserved it.”
“What happens if you leave for college and can’t be there for me?” Nancy mumbled.
“I have a few backup plans for that.” You chuckled, “Get your shit. We’ll go do something together before life gets busy for us.”
“I love you Y/N.” Nancy giggled as you slid your jacket on.
“You too Nance.” You grinned at your sister before turning your lights off and closing your door.

Starting pitcher ranks: Robbie Ray puts it all together in latest Shuffle Up
Tumblr media
Robbie Ray has been a right answer thus far (AP)
Here’s the big one, the starting pitcher shuffle up. It’s going to look absurd in a day or a week because that’s how pitching is. This position is erratic, fickle, humbling.
[Fantasy Football is open! Sign up now]
What’s happened to this point is merely an audition. We’re trying to calibrate 5×5 value from here on out.
Players at the same price are considered even. The prices are used as a tool to compare the players, but they are not scientifically derived. I study the numbers as much as I can, but I am not a formula guy. I never will be.
I will not debate the injured pitchers. They’re ranked as a courtesy. If you know exactly when Syndergaard and Bumgarner are coming back and exactly how they’ll do, wonderful. Please share it with the rest of the class.
I retain the right to tweak this list in the 24 hours. Game on.
$36 Clayton Kershaw $33 Max Scherzer $32 Chris Sale $28 Zack Greinke $25 Stephen Strasburg $24 Corey Kluber $24 Carlos Martinez $23 Dallas Keuchel $22 Yu Darvish $22 Carlos Carrasco $21 Michael Fulmer $20 Chris Archer $20 Lance McCullers $19 Marco Estrada $19 Johnny Cueto
With Archer’s stuff, you wonder how he loses as much as he does. A 3.94 ERA since the beginning of 2016 is criminal, given how talented he is (he’s also fallen short of his FIP for three straight years, which makes you wonder what we’re not measuring). That said, Archer’s struck out double-digits in four of his last six starts, maybe he’s starting to get in a groove. His career shows a 3.19 ERA and 1.15 WHIP at home, 3.88 and 1.25 on the road . . . Estrada used to be a smoke-and-mirrors guy, a lesson about sneaky-soft contact and how fly-ball pitchers are misunderstood. But this year, he’s actually starting to dominate in other areas. He’s pushed the strikeout clip over 10, dropped the walks by a third. This is a high-end SP2 now.
$18 Jon Lester $18 Justin Verlander $18 Jacob deGrom $18 James Paxton $17 Robbie Ray $17 Gerrit Cole $17 Jake Arrieta $17 David Price
I don’t think we had enough fun with Ray’s 2016 season, let’s start with that. A 218-strikeout campaign tied to a 4.90 ERA? A bloated 1.47 WHIP? An 8-15 record? You couldn’t really trust him, though you knew he could strike out 10-plus in any turn.
Ray’s ERA has dropped to 3.00 this year, despite a K/BB that’s actually an eyelash worse. He’s added a dazzling curve to the arsenal, pushed the swinging-strike rate forward, improved with first-pitch strikes. A lot of the so-called luck stats (hit rate, homer rate, strand rate) were against him last year; this year, they’re for him. But with peripheral-suggested ERAs in the mid-to-low 3s, this is a breakout we can feel good about.
Mind you, some home success would be nice. Arizona is a tricky place to pitch, and Ray knows all about it: note the 6.75 ERA at home, 0.64 ERA in the road. Obviously we expect a significant merging of those two stats, and I’d never pitch Ray at Colorado, unless it was a very format-friendly concept. But when you mix shake and pour Ray’s component profile, I like what’s in the glass.
$16 Luis Severino $15 Sean Manaea $15 Jose Quintana $15 Jake Arrieta $14 Michael Pineda $14 *Alex Wood $14 Eduardo Rodriguez $14 Jose Berrios $13 Kyle Hendricks $13 Lance Lynn $13 Jeff Samardzija
Is it possible to throw too many strikes? With Shark Sandwich, you have to wonder. Look at that strikeout rate, 10.5/9. Walks have never been a problem, and this year his BB/9 is down to 1.38. These are Cy Young-contending numbers on their own; we know BB/K tells so much of the story.
Alas, it’s not the entire story. Samardzija has a bloated 16.1 HR/FB, his strand rate blows, his hit rate stinks too. So you have to decide what you want to pay for going forward — the front door ERA or the hocus-pocus one (3.14 FIP, 2.81 xFIP). He’s allowing line drives on 27.7 percent of his batted balls, which explains away a lot of the problems. I’ll expect a high-3s ERA the rest of the way, maybe low 4s, with good strikeout numbers. Alas, that’s a very startable pitcher in the Mound Wreckage of 2017.
I don’t have any strong answers on The Q. I just wont go any lower on him based on back class. I also think he’s on a better team in a month or two.
$12 Ivan Nova $12 *Aaron Sanchez $12 Mike Leake $12 Sonny Gray $12 Trevor Bauer $11 *Madison Bumgarner $11 Rick Porcello $11 Marcus Stroman $11 Kenta Maeda $11 Alex Cobb $11 Brandon McCarthy $10 Julio Teheran $10 Jason Vargas $10 Dylan Bundy $10 Jake Odorizzi $10 J.C. Ramirez $10 Ervin Santana
If you want a smoke-and-mirror show, Santana checks most of the boxes. Despite his walk and strikeout rates both going in the wrong direction, he somehow has a 1.75 ERA — spitting in the face of a 4.10 FIP and 4.69 xFIP. His home-run rate is in line with his recent levels, but somehow he’s managed a .143 BABIP and a strand rate over 90 percent. Byron Buxton is great, but he’s not that great.
We can’t yell “regression!” and walk out of the room, you know that. But Santana’s ultimate give-back might be jagged to the point that he’s not even worth rostering. I don’t know how sophisticated the owners are in your league, but I’d be trying to sell. Maybe you can’t get something that makes sense. But you need to make an attempt.
Gray looked terrific before one awful inning at Cleveland, so I’m trying to keep my balance here . . .  Bauer still has lapses in command and concentration, but there’s probably signature-significance to a 14-strikeout start and his secondary ERAs are all much better than the front-door number  . . . McCarthy remains the most interesting athlete on Twitter, and he’s a pretty damn good pitcher when the health cooperates. He’s also well-versed in metrics and secondary thinking, a step ahead of many of his contemporaries . . . Nova is another winner of the Ray Searage lottery; you can live with those strikeout numbers when walks are eliminated . . . Lots of good fortune flashing for Bundy; a silly-high strand rate, a suspiciously-low BABIP. His strikeout rate is down to 6.2/9, which makes him very risky to me, especially in the AL East. Remember, that division has the best cumulative record and the best cumulative run differential. It’s still full of landmines and alligators . . . I really don’t know where Teheran went wrong, but we should at least note that he’s been a lot worse at home.
$9 *Noah Syndergaard $9 *Jameson Taillon $9 John Lackey $9 Dan Straily $9 Masahiro Tanaka $8 Derek Holland $8 Tanner Roark $8 Rich Hill $8 *Taijuan Walker $7 Michael Wacha $6 *Steven Matz $6 Matt Shoemaker $6 J.A. Happ $6 Jimmy Nelson $6 Adam Wainwright $6 Zack Wheeler $5 *Trevor Cahill $5 *Cole Hamels $5 Andrew Triggs $5 Matt Harvey $5 *Charlie Morton $5 *Matt Andriese $5 Joe Ross $5 Dinelson Lamet $4 *Felix Hernandez $4 Aaron Nola
My goal for this year is for everyone to see the truth with Aaron Nola.
I know pitching is a minefield right now, but I want to play in leagues where people think Aaron Nola is a Top 20 starter.
— scott pianowski (@scott_pianowski) May 3, 2017
Last calendar year for Aaron Nola: 6.55 ERA, 1.69 WHIP. I know it’s injury-related, but I don’t get the bandwagon. Let the narrative go.
— scott pianowski (@scott_pianowski) June 1, 2017
$4 Gio Gonzalez $4 Zack Godley $4 Brad Peacock $4 Drew Pomeranz $4 Mike Clevinger $4 *Nathan Karns $3 *Danny Duffy $3 Danny Salazar $3 Jaime Garcia $3 Antonio Senzatela $3 Kevin Gausman $3 Ian Kennedy $3 Ty Blach $3 *Jon Gray $3 Luis Perdomo $3 Patrick Corbin $3 Junior Guerra $3 Jharel Cotton $3 *Francisco Liriano $3 Jordan Montgomery $3 Josh Tomlin $3 Hyun-Jin Ryu $3 Ariel Miranda $3 Ricky Nolasco $2 *Julio Urias $2 German Marquez $2 Jerad Eickhoff $2 *Carlos Rodon $2 Kyle Freeland $2 Zach Davies $2 Jeff Hoffman $2 Eric Skoglund $1 *Vincent Velasquez $1 *Wei-Yin Chen $1 *Kendall Graveman $1 Matt Moore $1 Tyler Glasnow $1 *Hisashi Iwakuma $1 Jesse Hahn $1 Mike Foltynewicz $1 Daniel Norris $1 Jose Urena $0 Jason Hammel $0 Clayton Richard $0 Robert Gsellman $0 Andrew Cashner $0 Jeremy Hellickson $0 Phil Hughes $0 Matt Boyd $0 AJ Griffin $0 Jesse Chavez $0 R.A. Dickey $0 Chris Tillman $0 Wade Miley $0 Jhoulys Chacin $0 Mike Fiers $0 Hector Santiago $0 *Joe Musgrove $0 Amir Garrett $0 Jordan Zimmermann $0 Alex Meyer $0 Chad Kuhl $0 Matt Garza $0 Eddie Butler $0 Tyler Anderson $0 C.C. Sabathia $0 Matt Cain $0 Scott Feldman $0 Tyler Chatwood $0 Bartolo Colon $0 Ubaldo Jimenez $0 Jered Weaver $0 Mike Pelfrey
I could have differentiate the zero-dollar guys, but basically they’re all “unownable” and let’s leave it at that. Cashner is the funky name here, because he has a solid ERA that’s complete mirage. You can’t make it in today’s game when you walk more batters than you strike out. That is completely unsustainable.

Fantasy baseball: Padres pitcher Dinelson Lamet primed for breakout
Fantasy owners are always searching for that unexpected success story for their rotation, the next breakout pitcher. It can be a highly touted youngster with a world of potential who finally puts it all together or a veteran who finds that magical pitch to suddenly give his career new life.
In 2018, Tampa Bay’s Blake Snell lived up to his hype, had a breakthrough campaign (21-5, 1.89 ERA, 221 strikeouts) and won the Cy Young award. Last year, St. Louis’ Jack Flaherty won a career-high 11 games, finished sixth in the NL in strikeouts (231) and was tied with Jacob deGrom for the lowest WHIP (0.97) during his breakout campaign. He also limited opponents to a .192 average, third-best in the majors behind Justin Verlander and Gerrit Cole.
So, who looks like a candidate to be this year’s breakout pitcher? How about San Diego’s Dinelson Lamet, who has pitched just 187 ¹/₃ innings (35 starts) in the majors while going 10-13 with a 4.37 ERA?
On the surface, Lamet’s numbers are nothing that will have fantasy owners screaming, “I need Dinelson Lamet!” But, the same could have been said about Snell after his first 43 starts (11-15, 3.83 ERA, 217 strikeouts) or Flaherty after his first 34 big league appearances (8-11, 3.71, 202 strikeouts). Dig a little deeper on Lamet and you’ll find a pitcher who has the stuff to become a key cog in your rotation.
After undergoing Tommy John surgery and missing all of 2018, Lamet returned to make 14 starts in 2019. He finished with an uninspiring 3-5 record and 4.07 ERA, but those numbers don’t begin to tell the story of the 27-year-old.
Though just four of his starts lasted longer than five innings, Lamet allowed three earned runs or fewer in 11 of his starts. He recorded double-digit strikeouts four times, including a 14-strikeout outing.
Dinelson LametAP
In 11 starts from July 18-Sept. 18, Lamet lowered his ERA from 6.30 to 3.84 by going 3-3 with a 3.41 ERA and 81 strikeouts over just 58 innings. He held opponents to a .221 average in that span. He also finished the season with a 3.91 FIP and 3.44 xFIP, indicating he got unlucky.
Lamet’s 12.95 strikeouts per nine over his 14 starts ranked third among starters who threw at least 70 innings, finishing behind Cole and Chris Sale. His 33.6 percent strikeout rate ranked sixth, ahead of Lucas Giolito and deGrom. He also held opponents to a .223 average, which ranked in the top 25, and a 14.1 percent swinging strike rate, which was in the top 15 (ahead of Flaherty, Stephen Strasburg and Charlie Morton).
Despite throwing a 96 mph fastball (a slight uptick from before his surgery), it’s his slider that is the real troublemaker for opponents. Of his 105 strikeout victims last year, 77 met their demise via the slider. Opponents also hit a pitiful .116 against the pitch. For his career, batters are hitting .129 against the pitch and have struck out 162 times, which accounts for 66 percent of his 244 career strikeouts.
Lamet’s walk rate remained far too high (3.7 per nine innings), but it was lower than his career average (4.04 per nine). If he can continue to bring that number down, while keeping balls in the park (his 19.7 HR/FB rate ranked 25th highest in the majors), and maintaining his strikeout and swinging strike rates, he will be fantasy gold.
More great news about Lamet: He’s a reasonable investment with his 129.33 average draft position or $15 auction price, according to Fantasy Alarm.
Do not think about Lamet’s Tommy John surgery. He’s healthy. Don’t think about the fact he is on a team that has finished dead-last in the NL West in three of the past four years and haven’t had a winning record since 2010. That doesn’t matter in fantasy. All that matters is his production, and he is a young arm with tons of upside who you’ll be glad to have on your side.
The 27-year-old Padre is being drafted between two other potential breakout candidates in Arizona’s Zac Gallen (128.76, $10) and Oakland’s Jesus Luzardo (132.20, $10).
In 15 starts with the Marlins and Diamonbacks, Gallen was 3-6 with a 2.81 ERA, 10.8 strikeouts per nine and a 12.8 swinging strike rate. He was a stud over four seasons in the minors — going 27-18 with a 2.87 ERA, including going 9-1 with a 1.77 ERA before being called up to the Marlins last year.
Luzardo has thrown 12 innings in the majors, all out of the bullpen. He struck out 16 (34.8 percent of the batters he faced), had a 0.67 WHIP and a 14.6 percent swinging strike rate. In the minors, he was 14-7 with a 2.64 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, 10.8 strikeouts per nine and just 2.0 walks per nine.
Other potential breakout candidates include Houston’s Jose Urquidy (227.39, $5), Cleveland’s Zach Plesac (336.8, $1) and 31-year-old Kenta Maeda (183.53, $9), who will not be tossed between the rotation and bullpen in Minnesota.

MLB roundup: Braves’ Acuna plunked, hurt in testy win
Red-hot rookie Ronald Acuna Jr. departed early due to injury after getting drilled by an opening pitch, but the Atlanta Braves still finished a four-game sweep over the visiting Miami Marlins with a 5-2 win Wednesday.

Acuna, who had led off the previous three games with home runs and had gone deep in five straight, was hit by a 97 mph fastball on the first pitch of the contest, setting off a benches-clearing incident that led to the ejection of Miami starter Jose Urena and Atlanta manager Brian Snitker.
Acuna ran the bases and took his position in the outfield in the second inning, but he was subsequently removed. After the game, Snitker said Acuna exited due to cramps in his arm but that the team would know more about the 20-year-old’s condition Thursday.
After falling behind 2-0, the Braves came back to win their fifth straight game. Atlanta (68-51) is a season-best 17 games over .500 and two games ahead of the Philadelphia Phillies in first place in the National League East.
Phillies 7, Red Sox 4
Wilson Ramos had three extra-base hits in his Phillies debut, helping Philadelphia end visiting Boston’s five-game winning streak.
Ramos had two doubles, a triple, three runs and three RBIs as the Phillies split the two-game series. The 31-year-old catcher, acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays on July 31 despite nursing a hamstring injury, was activated off the 10-day disabled list before the game. He had been out since July 15.
Nick Williams and Justin Bour each added two hits for the Phillies. Brock Holt had a pair of hits for the Red Sox.
Cardinals 4, Nationals 2
Austin Gomber pitched six shutout innings, and St. Louis extended its season-best winning streak to eight games in beating visiting Washington.
Matt Carpenter, who extended his streak of reaching base in 33 straight games, was hit on his right hand in the seventh inning by a Matt Grace pitch and departed early. The Cardinals later announced that X-rays were negative and that Carpenter was removed for precautionary reasons.
St. Louis improved to 19-9 since interim manager Mike Shildt replaced the fired Mike Matheny. Washington has dropped four straight games and seven of its past nine.
Astros 12, Rockies 1
Gerrit Cole posted his seventh double-digit strikeout start of the season, and Houston bashed five home runs in snapping its nine-game home losing skid with an interleague victory over Colorado.
The Astros salvaged the finale of their six-game homestand with an offensive eruption, producing their highest scoring output at home since a 12-6 win over the Chicago White Sox on July 7. Houston had dropped five games in a row.
Evan Gattis and Tyler White blasted two home runs apiece, and Yuri Gurriel also went deep for the Astros. With his 12 strikeouts on the mound, Cole (11-5) recorded the Astros’ 25th double-digit strikeout game of the season, a franchise record that ranks tied for second all-time in American League history.
Dodgers 4, Giants 3
Brian Dozier hit a game-ending sacrifice fly in the 12th inning as Los Angeles beat visiting San Francisco to end a five-game losing streak.

Yasmani Grandal doubled to open the 12th inning against Giants reliever Casey Kelly (0-1). Grandal took third on Max Muncy’s single and scored on Dozier’s second career game-ending RBI.
The Dodgers’ recent bullpen issues surfaced once again in the late innings as Andrew McCutchen crushed a game-tying, three-run home run to center field in the eighth inning off Caleb Ferguson.
Mets 16, Orioles 5
Kevin Plawecki hit a grand slam, Todd Frazier homered and drove in four runs, and Brandon Nimmo went 5-for-5 with three RBIs as visiting New York crushed Baltimore.
The Mets scored early but broke the game open with a nine-run sixth inning, sending 12 batters to the plate. Plawecki’s grand slam, off rookie right-hander Evan Phillips, was the inning’s big blow. The Mets’ nine-run inning included four walks, a hit batter, two doubles, a triple and Plawecki’s slam.
The sixth-inning explosion let New York manager Mickey Callaway pull starter Zack Wheeler after five innings. Wheeler (8-6), who has won six consecutive starts, allowed one run on five hits. He walked two and struck out three.
Rays 6, Yankees 1
Mallex Smith hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning and fell a triple shy of the cycle as Tampa Bay beat host New York.
Smith helped the Rays even the three-game series at one win apiece when he lifted a first-pitch breaking ball from Luis Cessa (1-3) into the right field seats. Smith’s homer made it 5-1, and the Rays cruised to their seventh win in their past nine meetings against the Yankees.
Brandon Lowe drove in the first two runs of his career with run-scoring singles in the second and fifth innings. Kevin Kiermaier added an RBI single in the third for the Rays.
Twins 6, Pirates 4
Bobby Wilson homered and hit an RBI single, and Logan Forsythe drove in three runs with two singles to lead Minnesota past visiting Pittsburgh for a sweep of a two-game series.
Jose Berrios, in his first career start against the Pirates, allowed four runs (three earned) and seven hits in 3 2/3 innings. Gabriel Moya (3-0), the third of six Minnesota pitchers, tossed a scoreless 1 1/3 innings for the win, and Trevor Hildenberger pitched the ninth for his third save.
Elias Diaz homered, and Gregory Polanco had a two-run single for Pittsburgh, which ended its road trip 4-5 after losing the last three games. Chris Archer, making his third start for Pittsburgh, allowed four runs and six hits in five innings. He struck out seven and walked none.
Indians 4, Reds 3
Melky Cabrera smacked a two-run homer, and Cleveland took advantage of a strong bullpen effort to beat host Cincinnati in sweeping the three-game interleague series.
The Indians won their fifth straight thanks to a bullpen that rescued starter Shane Bieber, who made it through only 4 1/3 innings, giving up three runs on seven hits. Cleveland’s bullpen took over, with five relievers combining to give up just three hits and two walks with eight strikeouts in 4 2/3 scoreless innings.
The Reds lost their fourth straight after scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning to give starter Robert Stephenson a 3-0 lead. Cincinnati was held scoreless with six hits in the game’s final eight innings.
Blue Jays 6, Royals 5
Slideshow (11 Images)
Curtis Granderson hit a grand slam in a five-run fourth inning, Kevin Pillar had a pair of RBI singles, and visiting Toronto held on to defeat Kansas City.
Marco Estrada (6-9) allowed four runs, six hits and one walk while striking out three in 6 2/3 innings for the Blue Jays, who have won two in a row after dropping the opener of the four-game series.
Salvador Perez had three hits, including two home runs, and drove in three runs for the Royals, and Ryan O’Hearn added a pinch-hit homer. Jorge Lopez (0-2), making his first start for the Royals after being obtained in a trade with Milwaukee, allowed six runs and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings.
Angels 3, Padres 2
Rene Rivera homered with one out in the top of the ninth to break a 2-2 tie and give visiting Los Angeles a victory over San Diego and a sweep of the three-game series.
Rivera, who was the Padres’ team Most Valuable Player in 2014, pulled the first pitch he saw from San Diego closer Kirby Yates 407 feet into the left field stands to snap a 2-2 tie for the Angels, who have won seven of their past nine.
Cory Spangenberg hit his seventh homer for the Padres, who have dropped four of their last five immediately after winning four of five.
Cubs 8, Brewers 4
Anthony Rizzo homered, stole two bases and drove in three runs, and Jason Heyward had three hits, including a pair of doubles, and drove in two runs to lead Chicago to a win over visiting Milwaukee.
Albert Almora Jr. also homered for Chicago, which increased its lead over the Brewers to three games in the NL Central with the victory. David Bote had two hits and scored two runs while Javier Baez tripled and had two hits and also scored a run.
Brewers left fielder Ryan Braun left the game in the fifth inning with what the club announced as right ribcage tightness. Braun, who hit two homers in Milwaukee’s 7-0 win over the Cubs on Tuesday, apparently was hurt attempting to make a sliding catch on Heyward’s RBI double in the third inning.
Mariners 2, A’s 0 (12 innings)
Dee Gordon ended a scoreless deadlock with a two-run home run in the 12th inning, giving Seattle a victory over host Oakland to prevent a three-game sweep.
Seattle’s Mike Leake dueled Oakland’s Brett Anderson in a 0-0 game for eight innings, and Edwin Diaz finished it with his 47th save of the season, allowing the Mariners to pull within 2 1/2 games of the A’s in the American League wild-card race.
Mike Zunino drew a one-out walk from Oakland’s Yusmeiro Petit (5-3) in the 12th before Gordon hit the next pitch for just his second home run of the season. Nick Martini collected three hits while Matt Olson chipped in with a double and a single for the A’s, who had won four in a row.
White Sox 6, Tigers 5
Matt Davidson and Jose Abreu hit two-run homers to back another solid outing by Carlos Rodon as Chicago held off host Detroit.
Davidson had three hits and scored twice while Abreu delivered three hits and knocked in three runs. Yolmer Sanchez added three hits, a run and an RBI for the White Sox, who took the last two games of the three-game series after losing nine of their first 10 matchups with their division rival this season.
Rodon (4-3) hadn’t given up more than two earned runs in his previous six starts. He was touched for a three-run third but was otherwise stingy once again. He went eight innings, allowing five hits and a walk while striking out six.

For Brian Dozier | Trade tornado: Dozier, Archer among 15 swaps on deadline day
New Post has been published on https://is.gd/auqZtR
For Brian Dozier | Trade tornado: Dozier, Archer among 15 swaps on deadline day
For Brian Dozier, getting traded meant a dash to the airport and a long trip to Dodger Stadium. For Jake Diekman, it was a lot easier — he simply rode the bullpen cart from one clubhouse to the other at Chase Field.
Chris Archer, Jonathan Schoop and a bunch of relievers moved on deadline day, a flurry of 15 swaps Tuesday before time ran out to make deals without waivers.
The trade market kept spinning at a dizzying pace. Every team except San Francisco made at least one deal since the All-Star Game, with Tampa Bay swinging seven.
Archer, a two-time All-Star, hugged teammates at Tropicana Field before heading to Pittsburgh. He is 3-5 with a 4.31 ERA in 17 starts this season, and joins a Pirates club that has pushed back into the playoff race even after trading away Gerrit Cole and Andrew McCutchen in the offseason.
“They’re super-hot right now, and they want me,” Archer said. “I’m excited to be part of the organization that wants me, part of a rich baseball history, a hard-working community. I can’t wait to get there.”
The Rays sent former All-Star catcher Ramos to NL East-leading Philadelphia, while Leonys Martin, Kevin Gausman and Cameron Maybin also switched sides as contenders tweaked their rosters.
And why not? All but four National League teams began the day within 5 1/2 games of a playoff spot. The American League is more spread out — division leaders Boston, Cleveland and Houston have been busy.
Manny Machado, Cole Hamels, Zach Britton, Mike Moustakas and Ian Kinsler were among the big names that moved earlier this month.
Bryce Harper, Jacob deGrom, J.T. Realmuto and McCutchen had been mentioned in trade speculation, but stayed put.
“I think whenever you hear your name or see your name on stuff, you always wonder. But I think that’s just the business side of the game,” Harper said. “It’s part of the game.”
One of Harper’s teammates packed up. Exactly a year after getting traded from Minnesota to Washington, reliever Brandon Kintzler was part of another deadline deal. This time, the Nationals sent him to the NL Central-leading Chicago Cubs.
“I thought they were joking. I figured it’s not April’s Fools. They called me in, I said, ‘Am I traded?’ They said yeah,” Kintzler said. An All-Star last year, Kintzler turns 34 on Wednesday.
“Birthday again tomorrow, so I’m traveling on my birthday again, so that’s great. It is what it is,” he said.
Dozier had been a fixture in Minnesota’s lineup for years. But the Twins dipped this season, and they sent the power-hitting second baseman to the NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers for infielder Logan Forsythe and two minor leaguers.
Rather than starting at Target Field in Minneapolis, the 31-year-old Dozier hustled to join his new club as it hosted Milwaukee. He’s now part of a revamped infield for the defending NL West champion Dodgers, who added Machado two weeks ago.
“Brian’s brand here in Minnesota, I don’t know if you can get much better than that,” Twins manager Paul Molitor said. “Everything that he’s done for the community and the way that he’s played the game, he’s set a great example for our young guys throughout, and you’re going to miss a guy like that.”
The New York Mets had discussions about their talent-rich young pitchers, who include deGrom, Noah Syndergaard and Zack Wheeler.
“We were not going to move those players unless it involved considerable talent coming back in our direction,” assistant general manager John Ricco said.
Diekman definitely was on the go.
The 31-year-old lefty struck out two while pitching for Texas on Monday night in a win at Arizona. The Diamondbacks reacquired reliever Brad Ziegler from Miami early Tuesday, then boosted their bullpen by getting Diekman from the Rangers.
Wanting to make Diekman’s move easy, the Diamondbacks offered the services of the bullpen cart used to ferry relievers into the game.
“They asked and I was like, ‘Yeah, I don’t want to carry all of my stuff,'” Diekman said.

AEW Fake Rankings, 4/30/2024
It's been a while since I've done one of these, so helpful reminder: This is nothing like AEW's official rankings, based on actual stats. I just go by which wrestlers a) are pushed/protected by the promotion, and/or b) get over with the audience. It's an inexact science, but that's only because it's not real.
Men's singles division - babyfaces
Jon Moxley (IWGP world heavyweight champion)
Swerve Strickland (AEW men's world champion)
Adam Copeland (AEW TNT champion)
Will Ospreay
Eddie Kingston (STRONG men's champion)
Claudio Castagnoli
Orange Cassidy
Mark Briscoe (ROH men's world champion)
Kyle O'Reilly
PAC
Men's singles division - heels
Samoa Joe
Kazuchika Okada (AEW continental champion)
Roderick Strong (AEW international champion)
Konosuke Takeshita
Chris Jericho (FTW champion)
Rush
Kyle Fletcher (ROH men's television champion)
Trent Beretta
Big Bill
Zak Knight*
Unranked: Alex Reynolds, Angelico, Angelo Parker, Anthony Ogogo, Billy Gunn, Bryan Keith, Christopher Daniels, Chuck Taylor, Daniel Garcia, Dustin Rhodes, Isiah Kassidy, Jay Lethal, Katsuyori Shibata, Komander (AAA cruiserweight champion), Lee Johnson, Matt Cardona*, Matt Sydal, Penta El Zero Miedo, Rey Fenix, Ricky Starks, Rob Van Dam*, Rocky Romero*, The Beast Mortos*, The Butcher
Jobbers: Christiano Argento*, CJ Esparza*, Encore Moore*, JD Drake*, London Lightning*, Martin Stone*, Trevor Blackwell*
* - Not listed on AEW's roster webpage
These (fake!) rankings seem to go along with the old adage that "the championship doesn't make the wrestler, the wrestler makes the championship." I'm confident Swerve Strickland will become a great world champion, but for now he's clearly still standing in the shadow of AEW's top act, Jon Moxley. "MMA math" would tell you that Mark Briscoe should outrank the man he just beat for the ROH title, but Eddie Kingston is clearly a hotter name and a bigger draw. Semantics suggest that the international title is more prestigious than the continental title, but that won't fool anyone into thinking Roderick Strong is a bigger deal than Kazuchika Okada.
The heel side is so weak that, after I heard Powerhouse Hobbs is injured, I had to stick Zak Knight in there to come up with ten. That will probably change as AEW regroups for the storylines heading into Double or Nothing. Strickland in particular needs a solid lineup of heels to beat over the next six months. So maybe it's just as well that Don Callis and Chris Jericho are recruiting...
Men's tag team division - babyfaces
FTR - Dax Harwood & Cash Wheeler
The Acclaimed - Max Caster & Anthony Bowens
Men's tag team division - heels
The Young Bucks - Matt Jackson & Nick Jackson (AEW tag team champions)
Matt Taven & Mike Bennett (ROH tag team champions)
Shane Taylor & Lee Moriarty
Grizzled Young Vets - James Drake* & Zack Gibson*
* - Not listed on AEW's roster webpage
It's wild to me that the list above is so sparse when AEW just finished a 10-team tournament for the AEW tag title. Some of those teams shifted into ROH or the trios division, others had one man go MIA, and some appear to be split up for good. I assume the plan for Double or Nothing is for the Acclaimed to refocus on two-on-two action and chase the Young Bucks, mostly because I don't see any other challengers on the horizon.
Men's trios division - babyfaces
Dante Martin & Darius Martin & Action Andretti
Men's trios division - heels
Jay White & Austin Gunn & Colten Gunn (AEW/ROH trios champions)
Malakai Black & Brody King & Buddy Matthews
Lance Archer & Vincent Marseglia & Bobby Dutch
The trios division really fell off during the whole "Bang Bang Scissor Gang" saga, when the Acclaimed & Billy Gunn and Bullet Club Gold were squashing every other trio until they met in a unification match. Now White's team has more belts than contenders, and the Acclaimed look to be moving on from the division. You'd think this would lead to a push for the only babyface trio left--Andretti & Top Flight--but I've been expecting that for months with nothing to show for it.
Women's singles division - babyfaces
Willow Nightingale (AEW TBS champion)
Thunder Rosa
Mina Shirakawa*
Leyla Hirsch
AZM*
Yuka Sakazaki
Trish Adora
Red Velvet
Lady Frost*
Women's singles division - heels
Toni Storm (AEW women's world champion)
Athena (ROH women's world champion)
Serena Deeb
Deonna Purrazzo
Mariah May
Skye Blue
Anna Jay
Emi Sakura
* - Not listed on AEW's roster webpage
I'm still not satisfied with the amount of coverage AEW television gives to the women, but I have to give them credit for keeping so many of them on TV at once. In the past month we've seen: 1) Willow, Kris Statlander, Julia Hart, Mercedes Mone, and Skye Blue feuding over the TBS title; 2) the Storm/May/Shirakawa love triangle; 3) the rising tensions between Rosa and Purrazzo; 4) Deeb finally going after the world title. Not to mention 5) the endless Ruby Soho/Saraya feud, which is apparently called on account of pregnancy but still counts! If you also include everything the women are doing in ROH, things are pretty lively, especially when you consider how much smaller the women's locker room is than the men's.
No televised AEW matches since March 30: Aaron Solo, Abadon, AR Fox, Ari Daivari, Bishop Kaun, Brian Cage, Diamante, Evil Uno, Griff Garrison, Hikaru Shida, Johnny TV, John Silver, Josh Woods, Kiera Hogan, Leila Grey, Mercedes Martinez, Nick Comoroto, Nyla Rose, Serpentico, Shawn Dean, Taya Valkyrie, Toa Liona, Tony Nese
Most of these wrestlers seem to be earmarked for Ring of Honor for the long term, forming the backbone of the brand. The ROH weekly shows are fine, and I can more or less squint and pretend it's a continuation of the old ROH. But realistically, it's just AEW Dark with a fresh coat of paint and a $9.99/month subscription fee.
No televised AEW or ROH matches since March 30: Brandon Cutler, Christian Cage, Colt Cabana, Danhausen, Jake Hager, Jeff Jarrett, Killswitch, Kip Sabian, Kris Statlander, Marq Quen, Nick Wayne, Preston Vance, Riho, Saraya, Satnam Singh
The big story here is the Patriarchy (Christian, Killswitch, and Nick Wayne). Cage has been off TV since Adam Copeland, uh, hit him in the nuts with a board covered in nails. Under the circumstances, it makes perfect sense that he'd stay home a good long time to sell the effects of that! Since the rest of the group is defined by their blind obedience to him, it figures that they're benched for as long as he is.
I'm more surprised that Jeff Jarrett's crew has laid low for a long time, but I'm not complaining. (Hope I haven't jinxed it!)
Danhausen's presence on AEW/ROH programming has been almost nonexistant for months, and I wish I knew why. I'm glad he's got the freedom to work indy shows while he's not being used, but that doesn't address why he's not being used in the first place. I have to figure one side or the other isn't happy and is just waiting for his contract to expire.
No televised AEW or ROH matches in 2024: Dralistico, Ethan Page, Harley Cameron, Jack Perry, Luther, Madison Rayne, Marina Shafir, Mark Sterling, Mercedes Mone, Michael Nakazawa, Mother Wayne, Paige Vanzant, Paul Wight, Penelope Ford, Peter Avalon, Prince Nana, Sonjay Dutt, Stokely Hathaway
I'm genuinely not even sure that Cameron, Luther, Rayne, Sterling, Nakazawa, Wight, Nana, Dutt, or Hathaway are supposed to be categorized as full-time active wrestlers. I'm very sure Mother Wayne isn't a wrestler at all, and Vanzant hasn't been around in years. Whoever maintains AEW's website should come up with a better way to organize this information.
Inactive
Adam Cole (left leg - ankle fracture)
Adam Page (personal leave)
Angel Ortiz (right shoulder - pectoralis tear)
Bandido (left arm - wrist fracture)
Britt Baker (unspecified injury)
Bryan Danielson (storyline - head/neck trauma)
Darby Allin (right foot/nose - fractures)
HOOK (storyline - hit in face with baseball bat)
Jamie Hayter (right shoulder - unspecified injury)
Julia Hart (unspecified injury)
Jeff Hardy (nose - fracture)
Juice Robinson (back - unspecified injury)
Keith Lee (unspecified injury)
Kenny Omega (diverticulitis)
Kota Ibushi (right ankle - multiple ligament tears)
Mark Davis (left arm - wrist fracture)
Miro (unspecified injury)
MJF* (left shoulder - labrum tear)
Powerhouse Hobbs (right knee - unspecified injury)
Ruby Soho (pregnancy)
Sammy Guevara (suspension)
Scorpio Sky (unspecified injury)
Tay Melo (maternity leave)
The Blade (back - herniated lumbar discs)
Wheeler Yuta (ROH pure champion; unspecified injury)
* - Not listed on AEW's roster webpage, but dude, c'mon
I think this is the longest list of inactive wrestlers I've ever compiled for one roster. Of course, Adam Cole has all but said he's medically cleared, and Danielson and Hook are working angles. Even so, there's a lot of injured wrestlers on that list.
This serves the talking point that AEW has an injury problem. But since we don't know the nature of many of these injuries, it's hard to say all of them are due to any particular behavior or recklessness in the ring that AEW can curtail. Some of these wrestlers are simply dealing with back problems that are slow to heal after years of trying to gut through it. Others are no doubt in situations where they'd like to avoid surgery, only to find out that it's unavoidable, so they've only prolonged their downtime.
To me this is why AEW's massive roster is a good thing. Although it works against talent that never seems to get room in the spotlight, it also means there are plenty of wrestlers available to fill spots when big names go down. I'm not saying I don't miss Britt Baker or Miro--I do--but I also never feel like their divisions are dead without them around to prop them up.

LEADING OFF: Archer, Beltre, 'Cutch could go on deadline day
New Post has been published on https://is.gd/WZbkN5
LEADING OFF: Archer, Beltre, 'Cutch could go on deadline day
A look at what’s happening around the majors Tuesday:
DEADLINE DAY
Teams have until 4 p.m. EDT to swing a trade without waivers, meaning it could be the last chance for contenders to land some top targets. Will the Rays find a new home for Chris Archer? What about the Rangers and Adrian Beltre? Giants outfielder Andrew McCutchen, Twins second baseman Brian Dozier and Rays reliever Sergio Romo could go, too. Meanwhile, there hasn’t been any movement from the Mets to trade Jacob deGrom or Noah Syndergaard, though Zach Wheeler could still wind up elsewhere.
THE CLOSER’S OPENER
Before Roberto Osuna steps onto the mound as Houston’s new closer, the Astros want him to stand in the clubhouse and explain himself. The former Blue Jays closer was traded by Toronto to Houston on Monday, but he won’t pitch until at least next week as he serves a 75-game suspension under Major League Baseball’s domestic violence policy. Osuna was charged with one count of assault in Toronto in May, which remains pending. Astros pitchers Justin Verlander and Lance McCullers Jr. have been outspoken in their disdain for domestic abusers, and Verlander expects that Osuna will address the team before he makes his Astros debut.
“We don’t know the whole story,” Verlander said. “Obviously I’ve said some pretty inflammatory things about stuff like this in the past and I stand by my words.
“But I think with an ongoing case as is this one, just see what happens. But it will be interesting. I think he plans to talk to us when he gets here and we’ll go from there and see what happens.”
DEALIN’ DIPOTO
Mariners GM Jerry Dipoto has given manager Scott Servais a whole new bullpen. Seattle acquired left-hander Zach Duke from the Twins and right-hander Adam Warren from the Yankees on Monday. Dipoto also acquired righty Sam Tuivailala from St. Louis last week. Dipoto said the additions combined with what Seattle already has in its bullpen should help Servais keep everyone fresh.
“Obviously a lot of teams are looking to add to the bullpen this time of year with the trade deadline coming up. I’m not surprised,” Servais said. “It may not be the last thing we do.”
BABY BRAVES
Kolby Allard is set to become the latest prospect to debut for Atlanta this season when the 20-year-old left-hander starts against Miami. Allard was a first-round pick in 2015 and has been at Triple-A all of this season, going 6-4 with a 2.80 ERA. Allard joins Ozzie Albies, Luiz Gohara, Ronald Acuna and Mike Soroka as Braves players to debut before their 22nd birthday since the start of 2017.

Fantasy pitchers you should buy or sell based on well-hit data
Tumblr media
Hitters are having a hard time squaring up Atlanta Braves lefty Sean Newcomb. (AP Photo/Frank Franklin II)
Let’s look at well-hit rates vs. pitchers according to the video scouts at MLB stat provider, Inside Edge. The stat is how many balls in play were well-hit per at-bat. So if you strike someone out, it counts as a non-well-hit at bat.
I explain this every time because other similar stats ignore strikeouts. So if a guy strikes out 18 of 20 hitters (I’m looking at you, Josh Hader) and gives up a line-drive to one of the other two, his hard-hit in some models would be 50% — crazy pants. (For the record, the Inside Edge will hit rate against Hader is .070 compared with the MLB average of .151).
You are correct that well-hit is not a fantasy statistic. But again, at the risk of over-clarification, you want indicators that broaden the samples as much as possible. ERA is based on relatively few pitcher-versus-hitter encounters. Wins are largely a team stat. WHIP can include a lot of batted-ball luck. And I prefer the Inside Edge method over batting average on balls in play because that ignores homers.
So enough preamble. Who are the winners and losers in this statistic? If the statistic is worth tracking, mostly obvious good and bad pitchers will occupy the far ranges. And that’s a check here. The well-hit leader is Jacob deGrom (.045) and Justin Verlander (.073), Chris Sale (.086) and Noah Syndergaard (.088) also are all top 10. Among the trailers are guys you want to keep as far away from your mixed-league rosters as possible: Mike Leake (.244), Derek Holland (.239), Clayton Richard (.192) and, this year anyway, Marcus Stroman (.191).
[Yahoo Fantasy Football leagues are open: Sign up now for free]
The surprising leaders are buys. The highly-owned trailers, sells. But waiting for more data is reasonable — it always depends on what you need and what you can get.
My old favorite Vince Velasquez (.074) is fourth in well-hit rate between Verlander and Masahiro Tanaka. But he’s 11% owned due to grisly averages. But are his WHIP and ERA flukes? This says it just has to be. Velasquez has given up nine hard-hit balls in 122 situations this year. He should be crushing ERA and WHIP. You can point to the five homers, but can someone just rope a single against this guy? Five homers out of nine well-hit balls seems like ridiculous bad luck. His strikeout and walk profile is good, too. Full disclosure, I dropped him in 15-team Friends and Family. Every time I take Velasquez for a spin, he crashes my averages. I will come around to reason and roster him again in short order, no doubt.
Charlie Morton is 89% owned but is sixth. So he’s for real. But just behind him is a hard-throwing lefty who is just 32% owned — Sean Newcomb (.085) — even after dominating the Mets on Wednesday. Newcomb was one of my bold predictions in March (to be a top 30 starter) because of his stuff and the fact that he was one of the best prospects in baseball. His 2017 had some intriguing qualities (K-rate), remember. I like Newcomb’s odds even better now.
Zach Wheeler (18% owned) doesn’t qualify for the overall leaderboard but I see he is seventh best in allowing just five well-hit balls on 55 outcomes decided by pitches in the strike zone. If he can survive there, he can dominate if this out-of-the-strike zone splitter is remotely for real. Check it out for yourself. I say get ahead of the pack on what is likely going to be a good start in New York against the feeble Rockies and roster Wheeler now.
Jose Berrios (.062), Rick Porcello (.086), Trevor Wiliams (.092), Blake Snell (.095) and Miles Mikolas (.102) are all worthy of rostering/believing in, no matter the format.
Clayton Kershaw has been homered on a lot and you’d think that means he’s getting squared up at a very high rate, too, but he’s 25th best at .111. Don’t worry about Kershaw.
Sean Manaea though is only .121 well-hit allowed. Yes, that is good. But it’s nowhere near his statistical performance in fantasy. So he’s a sell if you can get someone to pay you a hitter you think is top 50, for example.
I think we’re a little ahead of our skis with Gerrit Cole, who is 51st in the stat at .139. You can say, “Who cares,” but if Cole’s so good, why is he getting squared up so often? Sure, these are mostly grounders probably. But remember Ks are being counted here.
There are just four guys at the bottom of the list of 97 qualifiers who are trendy/highly owned: Michael Fulmer (.193), Joey Lucchesi (.188), James Paxton (.188) and Chris Archer (.178). We already mentioned Stroman up top. I’m not saying to cut Fulmer and Lucchesi but just note there are some fleas here so getting lit up will be more correction than outlier. Paxton, Archer and Stroman have earned all their trouble this season. You may think you are buying low on them but a real buy low is a guy with bad fantasy stats but much better foundational stats, not one who is bad in fantasy and bad in the leading indicators, too.

Sale, Duffy become latest aces forced to make early exits

Sale, Duffy become latest aces forced to make early exits
/March 24, 2018 (AP)(STL.News) —Chris Sale and his fellow aces are having all sorts of trouble with these tuneup starts.
Sale was knocked off the mound by a line drive Saturday and exited with a bruised left hip. He said the injury wasn’t serious and wouldn’t jeopardize his opening day start Thursday for the AL East champion Boston Red Sox at Tampa Bay.
“I don’t see anything lingering from this,” Sale said. “Looked a lot worse than it really is.”
Sale was hit by a liner off the bat of Houston’s J.D. Davis in the first inning. The left-hander crumpled to the ground, then walked off the field under his own power.
On Friday, San Francisco ace Madison Bumgarner sustained a broken pinkie on his pitching hand when he was struck by a line drive. He is expected to miss at least two months.
The same day, Tampa Bay star Chris Archer — set to pitch against Sale — was hit by a grounder in the forearm of his pitching arm and had to leave a minor league game.
Hours after Sale was hurt, Kansas City lefty Danny Duffy exited in the third inning because of shoulder tightness. He said he expected to be OK to start on opening day at home against the White Sox.
“I think the baseball gods know I can’t stand spring training and they just wanted to give me a little bit more miserable time throwing here,” Duffy said.
ELSEWHERE AROUND THE GRAPEFRUIT AND CACTUS LEAGUES
RED SOX 6, ASTROS 0
Eduardo Nunez had three hits for Boston, and Xander Bogaerts hit his third home run. Derek Fisher had two hits for Houston.
YANKEES (SS) 8, BRAVES 3
Luis Severino made his final spring start for New York’s split squad, pitching five innings and allowing two runs and two hits and two walks, striking out seven. Atlanta ace Julio Teheran went five innings, giving up two runs and three hits while fanning five.
Yankees first baseman Greg Bird was held out with a sore right foot, and is scheduled to be evaluated Monday in New York for inflammation. He is batting .154 and was limited to 48 regular-season games last season because of a lingering right ankle injury.
YANKEES (SS) 13, BLUE JAYS 6
Giancarlo Stanton hit his second home run for New York’s split squad and Didi Gregorius homered for the fourth time. Jacoby Ellsbury went 0 for 2, leaving him at .076 this spring, and will start the season on the disabled list with an oblique injury. Randal Grichuk and Kevin Pillar homered for Toronto.
MARLINS 4, NATIONALS 3
Washington ace Max Scherzer got ready for opening day, pitching seven innings and giving up four runs and eight hits while striking out nine. Yadiel Rivera had three hits, drove in three runs and stole a base for Miami.

The Rangers released 44-year-old pitcher Bartolo Colon from his minor league contract. They might still renegotiate with him — Colon has pitched well this spring and could slot in as their fifth starter because Martin Perez will open the season on the disabled list.
Texas minor league coach and former big league slugger Howard Johnson was hit in the face by a line drive and carried from the dugout on a stretcher. He was taken to a hospital.
BREWERS 10, ATHLETICS 5
Christian Yelich homered, doubled and drove in four runs from the leadoff spot. Lorenzo Cain added an RBI single and is batting .450 in his first spring with Milwaukee.

Zack Godley started for Arizona’s split squad and pitched two-hit ball for seven innings, giving up a home run to Mike Moustakas.
Frank Schwindel hit a tying homer in the ninth for the Royals. He has 14 hits in his last 18 at-bats, including seven home runs. He started out the spring 0 for 19.
TWINS 12, ORIOLES 4
Ehire Adrianza homered, doubled and drove in three runs for Minnesota. Baltimore starter Chris Tillman was tagged for six runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings.
MARINERS 7, CUBS (SS) 3
Felix Hernandez allowed four hits and one run — a homer by Ian Happ on the first pitch — while striking out three in 3 2/3 innings for Seattle. Jean Segura went 3 for 3 with a walk and scored two runs, and Robinson Cano was 2 for 4 with an RBI.
CUBS (SS) 3, ROCKIES 0
Anthony Rizzo hit a two-run homer and five Chicago pitchers combined to allow just three hits. Colorado right-hander Jon Gray, who gave up 14 runs in his first 12 1/3 innings this spring, had his second consecutive scoreless start. He permitted just one hit with two strikeouts in three innings.
