A late but pretty post for today's World Migratory Bird Day. A group of White-crowned Sparrows is still sticking around here, and I love that I get to thoroughly watch them from all angles at the brush pile. They seem to love it there, it provides easy cover if they feel they need it. They also use the pond, so keep an eye out, you may see them. I am not sure how long they will still stick around, I never had that many visiting and staying around for so long.

A new volume in the @shikashikacollective Birdsong series is in the works, this time uniting the stories and journeys of ten migratory birds with ten migratory artists from across the Americas.

The @kickstarter campaign launches on March 11.

The Trump administration moved on Friday to weaken protections for migratory birds threatened by industrial activities, including oil and gas operations.

Acting Solicitor of the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) Gregory Zerzan restored an opinion from the first Trump administration that the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA) "does not apply to the accidental or incidental taking or killing of migratory birds," despite the fact that this opinion was already ruled illegal in federal court.

"Trump is breaking the law and flouting a court order by handing the fossil fuel industry and polluters this blank check to kill millions of migratory birds," said Tara Zuardo, a senior campaigner at the Center for Biological Diversity. "The United States has lost billions of birds over the past 50 years, and that decline will accelerate horrifically because of this callous, anti-wildlife directive. No one voted to slaughter hummingbirds, cranes, and raptors, but this is the reality of Trump's illegal actions today."

The new directive comes as birds in the U.S. are under threat, with their numbers falling by around 30% since 1970. A number of factors are responsible for this decline, among them the climate emergency, habitat loss, falling insect populations, window strikes, and outdoor cats. However, conservationists toldThe New York Times that industrial activities would be a greater threat if not for the protection the law provides.

For example, Zuardo told the Times that if U.S. President Donald Trump's interpretation of the law had been in effect following BP's Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010—which likely killed over 1 million birds—the company would not have been charged the around $100 million in fines that went to support bird conservation after the disaster.

Friday's directive is part of an ongoing effort over the course of both Trump administrations to weaken the MBTA so that it only targets the purposeful killing of birds, dropping enforcement against accidents such as as oil spills, drownings in uncovered oil pits, trappings in open mining pipes, and collisions with power lines or communication towers.

Today is apparently ANGRY STABBY BIRB DAY.

I was taking a walk on the boardwalk out near Bolstadt in Long Beach, when I came across this western grebe (Aechmophorus occidentalis) stranded on the path ahead of me. It looked alert and uninjured, so chances were just that it couldn't take flight off of the hard surface, but I called Peninsula Wild Care anyway to see if they wanted to bring it in for a checkup.

They quickly coordinated a couple of volunteers to meet me nearby, and I needed to get the grebe out of the way since a lot of people walk their dogs there and not all of them are on leashes. I figured okay, this is a relatively small bird, not as big as the muscovies I've carted around on the farm, and it seems calm, right?

NOPE. As I tried to gently reach for the grebe it turned from a calm, if confused pile of feathers on the decking to Stabby McStabberson, and I very nearly got jabbed and nipped a few times by a long, pointy beak attached to a surprisingly agile and very much NOT happy bird. I ended up having to take my hoodie off and dropping it over the entire grebe, and only when the lights were out could I bundle it up and carry it over to the meeting place.

Since it was pretty energetic, not obviously sick or injured, and its body condition felt decent (at least through the hoodie) I'm hoping it's going to get released soon enough after a checkup and a nice meal of fish. Many waterbirds have a lot of trouble taking off from hard surfaces because their feet are so far back on their bodies--which is great for swimming and water takeoffs, but not so helpful on land. If the bird had stayed stranded there they could have been injured or killed by another animal, or ended up dehydrated.

So let's hear it for Stabby the Angry Grebe, and wish them a good release back into the wild!

I've missed the World Migratory Bird Day, which is on the 10th of May. So with one day delay here is a collection of my favourite migratory birds.

First, the many songs birds like the Eurasian blackcap and the Common redstart. I just love the moment when you can hear them again.

Second, the many wading birds that migrate like the Northern lapwing and the European golden plover. I am in the happy situation to live close to both the Baltic Sea and the North sea and that means seeing waders who actually stay all summer, as well as those who stay here during winter and the ones that only do a stop-over during migration.

Thirdly, the big migratory birds, like all those geese and cranes that show up on the sky in autumn and make you think about where they will be going.

And lastly, the swallows, martins and swifts, here only a picture of a barn swallow, because while I love to see those agile birds, it is really difficult to take good pictures of them.
