Mía Mayhem Breaks Down Walls by Kara West and Leeza Hernandez: This delightful book, starring Mia, an elementary-aged, Black superhero girl, is actually the fourth in a fantastic series I only just found out about! This delightful early chapter book features Mia and her friends as Mia receives a special necklace from her former-superhero mom (superpowers run in the mother's side of the family), and proceeds to get into all kinds of funny misadventures as her super-strength gets a little out of control - but everything is solved in the end with the support and help of her friends. Some of the things I adored about this book were its casual, non-remarked-upon representation of Mia's friend Allie, a girl with prosthetic legs who also happens to be the strongest girl in the class (lifting two camels!), Mia's best friend Eddie, whose everyday superpowers of supportive friendship help Mia more than any fantasy powers, and her teacher's guidance in focus, which helps Mia when she panics to calm herself (woohoo representation of mental health strategies in a primary-grade superhero book!!!!) And the illustrations! They really make this book, a mix of graphic-novel style panels and regular illustrations, joyfully bringing out the funny side of superpowers as Mia cleans her room by blithely piling bookcase upon desk upon chair, causes some humorous messes at superhero school, and flies up to secure her mischievous cat Chaos from the top of her bookcase. Mia is a character kids will instantly fall in love with, and they don't need to worry when they finish, because this book is part of an ongoing series! If they like Yasmin, Katie Woo, or Pedro books, but want to mix real-life misadventures with some superhero ones, Mia is another character they will adore. #diversechildrensliterature #diversekidlit #blackgirlmagic #blackjoy #friendship #mentalhealth #mightygirls #empoweringgirls #superherobooks #childrensfantasy #childrensliterature #ChildrensBooks #readwithyourchild #earlychapterbooks #disabilityrepresentation #blackgirljoy https://www.instagram.com/p/CDJllJsnYRL/?igshid=sz7gefs4l8cf

@lana.honcharuk is taking me on a great detour back to The US for a brief time during my Peace Corps service. She won a Google Coding Challenge and invited me to be her traveling companion. I couldn’t be more honored than to share some experiences of the US with her. This super smart girl who codes is going somewhere and I hope I’m able to share some super cool opportunities with her. But because of her she is sharing cool opportunities with me, a photo of us from the rooftop patio at Google San Francisco, just a perfect backdrop of the Bay Bridge begins is there. The second two photos are of her group of youth who were also coding Champions, I am fortunate enough to know a very generous person who happens to work at Facebook and was able to set this group up with a tour of campus. And this was just day 1! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ #girlswhocode #technovation #paradigmchallenge #peacecorpsukraine #diamondchallenge #googlecoding #gci #baybridge #sanfrancisco #california #facebook #menlopark #mypeacecorpsstory #peacecorps #smart #smartgirls #mightygirls #smartgirlswinning #girlsrock #ukrainiangirl #ukraine #україна (at Google San Francisco) https://www.instagram.com/p/Byj3VR9incD/?igshid=e567pctcfv5i

Been kicking this idea around for over a year, and finally built up the nerve to do something about it.
Women in STEAM fields are a diverse bunch in all sorts of ways. Like ogres, onions, and parfaits, we have layers. We have passions, dreams, and ambitions. And a wide range of interests. Our journeys to how we got to where we are unique, and in many cases, previously uncharted territory.
And I want you to meet some of us.
So, welcome to STEAM Powered (@steampoweredshow) where I have conversations with women in STEAM to learn a bit about what they do and who they are.

Today's #matriarchymarch is the amazing Hannah Szenes. Hannah was a special ops executive and paratrooper of Mandate Palestine for the British Army during WWII. The group was comprised of Jewish volunteers whose mission was to organize resistance against the German forces, and to aid in the rescue of allied personnel. Hannah was a Hungarian who immigrated to Nahalal and joined a paramilitary group that would later lay the foundation for the Israeli Defense Forces. In 1943 she enlisted in the British Army's Women's Auxiliary Air Force and began her training in Egypt. A year later she and her colleagues parachuted into Yugoslavia to join a partisan group (communist led resistance), to aid in the rescue of Hungarian Jews being deported to Auschwitz. However it was discovered that the Germans now occupied Hungary, and it was deemed too dangerous to continue with the rescue. Despite this, Hannah and her colleagues decided to continue on alone. They were arrested at the Hungarian border, and her British transmitter was discovered. She was taken to a prison, stripped and beaten for three days, loosing several teeth in the process. Her captors wanted the codes for the transmitter in order to find out who these three prisoners were and how they could find and trap others like them. Hannah was resolute, and so was sent to a prison in Budapest where she would continue to be interrogated and beaten for information. She only revealed her name. In October of 1944 she was charged and convicted of treason, and on November 7th she was executed by firing squad. In 1946 her diary was published in Hebrew. In 1950 her remains were brought to Israel and burried in Jerusalem. After the Cold War she was officially exonerated by the Hungarian military court. Hannah is considered to be a national heroine in Israel. #matriarch #matriarchy #herstory #history #shero #heroine #mightygirl #womenempoweringwomen #femalewarrior #servicebeforeself #jewishheroine #womenshistorymonth #womenshistory #solider #airman #wwiihero #portrait #womenpaintingwomen https://www.instagram.com/p/Buzu1KVlxeE/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1ugohg0ekjl3l

I am being dragged - sometimes willingly, sometimes kicking & screaming - into the life of being #woke and a #feminist ...which is translating to being an #everyoneist I'm not sure why this caught my eye long enough to watch, but it made me think: what do we tell our daughters by refusing to show blood or acknowledge menstruation? There is almost never a mention of it in media...and when there is, they use that gnarly blue liquid. If something that color is coming from any orfice of your body SEEK HELP! Menstruation is a fact of life for over half the population of the planet. It isn't pleasant (I'm told), but it isn't abnormal. I don't know how old I was when I told my first dirty joke. Probably early teens...I do remember the discussion in Chasing Amy about the importance of "dick and fart jokes." If we can joke about body parts, and those body functions, we owe it to our girls to be able to acknowledge menstruation. #endrant #mightygirl #dadofdaughters #normaltobleed #bloodisred #menstruation #period #feminism #learningtodad

Why are we so excited about “Black Panther”? It comes down to our belief in the power of film to move hearts and change minds. Bias is really a lack of imagination. Inability to imagine another’s experience. Inability to imagine a better alternative.⠀ *⠀ That’s why films are such important tools for fighting bias. They create characters we care about and root for—so we start to empathize with someone else’s hopes, dreams, fears and suffering. We focus on our common humanity rather than our differences. Stories create alternate worlds that show us possible futures that are better, more splendid and more magnificent—pushing us to question the status quo and hope for more.⠀ *⠀ This is why @BlackPanther is a big deal. As the writer of the @TIME cover story on the film puts it, “Those of us who are not white have considerably more trouble finding representation that indicates that our humanity is multifaceted. Relating to characters onscreen is necessary not merely for us to feel seen and understood, but also for others who need to see and understand us.” (It’s a thoughtful article with great historical and cultural context.)⠀ *⠀ The film is also revolutionary in how it portrays women—strong, complex, and beautifully dark-skinned. “Every single woman in T’Challa’s life is either dark-skinned or brown-skinned: His sister. Momma. Bodyguards. It’s a huge deal!” writes Clarkisha Kent in @huffpost. This breaks from casting norms in Hollywood, where light-skinned black women are often preferred.⠀ *⠀ Read our full blog post about the film and watch the trailer on our site: BigFlipDocumentary.com/blog ⠀ ⠀ • • •⠀ THE BIG FLIP is a documentary and movement that champions stories that expand our expectations of what men and women, boys and girls, should do and can do.⠀ • • •⠀ #StrongIsBeautiful #MightyGirl #StrongGirls #equality #genderequality #racialequality #diversity #WomenInFilm #movie #feminist #genderequality #genderneutral #strongwomen #thebigflip #film #filmfriday #blackpanther #comingsoon #marvel

I find it interesting when terfs act like transmascs are just tomboys who feel like they can't be gnc as women
I went to an all girls secondary school. I have experienced first hand the full spectrum of womanhood - tomboys, girly girls, butches, femmes, dykes, the girls who bleach their hair and paint their eyebrows on, the ones with buzzcuts who dye their hair rainbow colours, the ones who roll their skirts up and the ones who prefer trousers, and everything in between. I could go on with examples
My school has always been feminist. They were #womeninstem, they took girls from the sixth form to speak at NAWO, they brought feminist speakers from the UN in to talk to us about women's rights, we did all of the sports (I've heard that at mixed schools they segregate sports by gender, and girls do different sports to boys. Our school did all of them)
We were never given any reason to doubt that we could achieve anything we wanted as a women
And still, when they called as "ladies", "women", "#mightygirls", there were always some of us for whom those words felt inaccurate. Not because of any failure to teach us that women are valuable, but because we just weren't women
