rainworld AU idea ahead

so there's definitely a lot of iterators, and all of them would've reacted differently to the ancients disappearing, as we saw with one example of a local group (the canon guys)

so I had the idea of some iterators getting in anonymous group chats together and plotting ideas for what else they could do with their time instead of wasting away for a solution that probably doesn't even truly exist

and then they decide to modify slugcats (and other creatures, but mainly slugcats) to basically be fighting puppets. they drop them into a set location and watch as they fight each other using their overseers.

but some slugcats manage to escape this hell and actually start to form little communities of runaways, trying to figure out how to live when all they've known is blood and death. and there's the added bonus that they can't be spotted by overseers, otherwise modified creatures will be sent to kill them, and so they're living in paranoia but still trying to find some kind of hope

idkkk I might make something for this!! or maybe you guys could make your own little scug OCs for it too, I'd love to see them (you can @ me in your ideas)

Idk why but it broke me. All I know is I read this at midnight and fell asleep crying. I was an emotional mess for days after it.

Couldn’t read it all at once because of how consuming the emotions are. It’s that straining and the amount of uncertainty and flowery sappy sht will choke you.

ok i absolutely adored your soulmate au fic and as promised here is a longer (and hopefully more coherent) explanation of all that i loved about it: 1. the more i think about it, the more i really like what you did with mai/katara, and both of their first words to zuko being the same, even if mai saw zuko's soul mark (besides who's to say that soulmates havent met before by literally reading the words LOL). this along with what iroh said about a soulmate just being someone meant to be in (1/5)

your life explores so many possibilities. like how it’s not always clear whether or not people are meant to be in your life, and esp with any strong meaningful relationship (romantic or not), first times not always the charm/appearances can be deceiving. also iroh’s words were just amazing and i LOVE that twist that “soulmates” aren’t necessarily romantic, i think it takes a cliche idea (beloved, but cliche nonetheless even if im a slut for cliche lmf a o) and makes it original and fresh. idk if this was intentional on your part or not but in a way, mai played an important part in zuko’s life, even if she wasn’t his true soulmate–she proved a contrast to katara and a comparison between what does and doesn’t feel “right”. the different emotions and stuff he experiences with katara are all that more powerful bc of how different it was from mai. 2. also im incredibly glad that zutara actually happened and they got together but i also liked how you hinted at them beingsoulmates by being enemies (maybe im projecting here? lmao), temporary or not. there’s some harsh beauty and balance in that, not as severe as mutual hatred but like doomed lovers (but they dont even get to that point) always at each others throats, a permanent fixture in the others life or as you put it, much more elegantly, mirrors and reflections (reminiscent of “all these ghosts” imo but I DIGRESS). 3. ALSO FUCK THAT ENDING WAS SO FUCKING WELL DONE AHHHHHHHHHH4. two unimportant questions just for my own curiosity, if u feel up to answering? does the placement of the soulmark mean anything? and were you imagining any specific person for azula’s soulmate? i wondered if it might be mai or ty lee but idkkk anYWAY thank u for reading all this sent in 5 parts so if you didn’t get all of it im sorrrY

Oh, my god. OH MY GOD!!! First of all please don’t apologise for this wonderful, wonderful thing you’ve done - this is quite possibly the best ask I’ve ever received and I can’t believe you took the time to write this much! I’m honestly just blown away, and absolutely over the moon. Your words are so insightful, I cannot get over the fact that you analysed this dumb fic of mine so deeply and thoughtfully i’m sobbing

I love everything you said, but especially the part about how Mai served such an important role in Zuko’s life as the foil to the life he does want - as you said so beautifully, “the comparison between what does and doesn’t feel ‘right’”. I wish I could say I did this intentionally, but you give me too much credit - I didn’t think about any of that while I was writing it, but the lens you’ve given me to look at it through provides a whole new dimension to this work so thank you so much!!! 

I did very much try to hint at the fact that Zuko and Katara being enemies at the beginning and their being soulmates were not mutually exclusive. I just feel (in this fic, at least) like a soulmate can be many things - mirror, weapon, lover, friend - but the one thing they always are are is necessary. Everything a soulmate is, every role they play - even (perhaps especially) the more unpleasant ones - are needed in life, and so it was for Z/K here. (Also “harsh beauty and balance; always at each other’s throats; a permanent fixture in each other’s life” sums up their dynamic so well! I’m in awe of how well you word)

The placement of the soul marks is such an interesting question, and I wish I had a more insightful answer for you but the truth is I didn’t put that much thought into them at all *sobs* Zuko’s and Mai’s were driven purely by Plot Reasons™ - I needed Zuko’s to be somewhere both Katara and Mai could see it at different points in the story (hence the hip) and Mai’s somewhere it could be revealed dramatically (hence the arm).

For Katara’s, I think I just liked the idea of her keeping things that connect her to the people she loves - her mother’s necklace, her soul mark - near her pulse, around her throat, her bare neck. And Azula’s soul mark is around her wrist purely so I could put in the line about feeling like a “a bracelet, or like a manacle” because I like the idea of Azula looking at love as something that chains her.

I did (and do) not have any specific person in mind as Azula’s soul mate, but I guess it would be nice to imagine someone visiting her in prison one day, and when she lifts her head to snarl at them, saying to her, I’m not afraid of you. 

(Or - and I don’t know if you’re into Tyzula at all, but if you are - perhaps it would be nice to also imagine a little girl dressed in pink doing cartwheels across the palace gardens (this would be years ago, which is why they can’t even remember it) and little Azula saying sharply, Hey! You can’t do that! and little Ty Lee straightening up and saying, I’m not afraid of you. Just a thought.)
