how do you think rafe will end up in morocco with the pogues? i reckon it might have something to do with rafe working with chandler because he'll probably lose the 400k so in return he has to get the treasure for them or something and in turn is like lowkey going to betray the pogues. also do you think if rafe and sarah end up rekindling their relationship it'll be a catalyst to rafe forgiving sofia because what rafe did to sarah was so much worse than what sofia did to rafe. bc imo it's not like when he finds out it isn't going to linger on him, it'll instigate a psychological battle where his feelings of trusting people get even more tainted and he very much cares about sofia (you can tell from their scene in goat island especially where he hangs onto every expression she makes after saying he sees a future with her) so he will miss her presence in some sort of way but i don't think he'll be able to forgive her on his own, like without someone else helping him see her pov.
I definitely think Hollis and Chandler have something to do with Rafe being in Morocco. Perhaps Hollis and Chandler are actually not as rich as they seem, and that’s the reason they needed Rafe’s money and Rafe basically tails them to get his revenge/get his money back (since we have bts photos of Chandler in Morocco he followed him there) and that’s the reason why Rafe’s with the pogues: both of them need to get back at/go after Chandler.
And then (building off of your idea) Rafe betrays the pogues because Chandler convinces him to help him instead, saying he’ll give Rafe a cut of the money???
I don’t know, we’ll see what happens!!
Oooo I love that idea!! I would love for Rafe and Sarah to make amends and I definitely see him realising he misses Sofia, and trying to fix things with her (after he presumably gets mad at her for betraying him).
I love your theory soooo much!!! Ahhhh yes definitely, he needs someone to push him into forgiving Sofia, or to make him look at things from her perspective!!
And I agree, her betrayal is gonna mess him upppp, I’m scared but at the same time excited to seeeee!!

[akira fudo x reader]
author’s note: i just watched this anime and was so inspired i wrote this in a day. anyway i would like to write something bigger for akira sometime, like more expansive, but we’ll seeeee
word count: 5,207
Nighttime drives are your favorite.
There are hardly any other cars on the roads, and your eyes are spared the ugly glare of headlights flashing in your mirrors or from cars in the opposite lanes, headed the opposite direction. Lamp posts leave spots of light to illuminate the asphalt roads in addition to your own car lights, and you’re driving into the blackness, the glittering city skyscrapers getting farther and farther away.
You bask in the silence afforded by moments like these, the radio having been switched off as soon as you got in. In the daytime, you typically have it on to mask the sound of passing cars, the whoosh which begins as a low thrum during the approach, then a quick burst of noise as they drive by, before the sound fades again. You’ve been hunched over your work all day, so to be here now, mindlessly zooming down the street, is welcome stress relief.
Your stomach growls and you wince slightly. It’s the first noise to permeate the cabin besides your occasional deep breaths, steady inhales and exhales to relax after a long day. You hadn’t bothered to eat prior to hopping in the car. The thought of food had slipped from your mind since you hadn’t been hungry, and you were too eager for quiet time to yourself to have a snack. You’ll have to grab something to eat on your way back.
Eventually the smooth asphalt roads are traded for bumpy, uneven terrain, and while this is considerably less relaxing, you’re not bothered because it means you’ll soon arrive at your destination. Instead of lamp posts to light the way, you rely solely on your car headlights and the moon above. The latter isn’t helping much at all, unable to touch the ground and only strong enough to shine on the leaves of the trees to your left and right. For any other person, coming through here might prove to be difficult at this time of night, but you have no such problems. You’ve memorized the route.
Once the car is parked and the headlights switched off, you exit and push the door shut behind you. The chirps of crickets echo in every direction. They sound nearby, the volume growing still as you pop open the trunk, as if they have come to see what you are up to. No one comes out here, much less past midnight. It wouldn’t be safe, considering the animals who might roam in the tall grass and behind thick tree trunks. But even as the chirps and the hoots of owls and the scurrying of small creatures in the bushes grow louder, like they are closing in, you’re not afraid. Would you come as often as you do if you were?
There’s only one bag in the trunk tonight. Sometimes you have as many as five. One is a nice break for your back, and it only takes a single trip to carry it out to the middle of the small clearing. It lands with a heavy thud and kicks up a small cloud of dust. The movement has disturbed the contents inside, and you recoil in disgust as the smell reaches your nose. You nudge at the garbage bag with the toe of your boot, like you’re expecting it to twitch, and with a shudder and shake of your head, you take a few steps back and reach into your jacket pocket.
The matchbox is feeling light. Okay, add that to the checklist. Buy food and a new box of matches. You strike a fresh match and briefly revel in the quiet hiss of the fire which bursts forth, eating away at the head and down the wood. Before it reaches your fingers, you toss the match onto the garbage bag and watch as it burns, tendrils of smoke trailing higher and dissipating to nothing. The stench worsens as the bag is engulfed in flames and your repulsion increases. You have to cover your nose with your hand and this might seem like good reason to leave, but you need to stay to make sure the fire is strong enough that it doesn’t accidentally go out due to any gusts of wind.
Come on, you berate yourself. You’ve done this before. Seconds of waiting are like hours and it’s ironic, you can’t help but think as you stand there, willing yourself not to be sick. You have seen and smelled and felt much worse.
When the fire is sufficiently strong enough that you’re confident it won’t go out before its job is done, you turn away and speed walk back to the car, yearning for fresh air. You slam the trunk closed. Coming out here was fun and all, but you’re now ready to leave. As if on cue, your phone dings with a text message. After sliding into the driver’s seat and getting situated, you open it to find two street names. They’re familiar to you. You’ve driven past this intersection in the past, though that had been in the day. You continue to stare down at the succinct message while mentally mapping your way there from here, and blink curiously at the three dots at the bottom of the conversation.
A new chat bubble pops up: Don’t be late.
You roll your eyes and toss your phone onto the passenger seat, not bothering to reply. Since when are you ever late? The engine roars to life and you leave the nocturnal animals to their own devices, until next time, whenever that should be. Perhaps soon. The spot of orange flames in your rearview mirror shrinks the farther you drive and there comes a point where you aren’t sure if you have driven far enough for it to be too small to see any longer, or if it has finally fizzled out.
Though you’re back in the city, you’re back in a part of it that lacks functioning lamp posts. It’s pitch black in the alleyway, and if not for your night vision, you’d be left clawing at the walls to guide yourself along. Walking with a sense of ease that doesn’t entirely fit the context, given the time and the nonexistent lighting and your generally unassuming and nonthreatening figure, you traipse down the long path between the two buildings. You hear the scuffle before you see it.
Heavy fists swinging through the air; loud roars; claws sinking into flesh with a squelch; spurts of blood. It sounds ugly. You peek around the corner. The monsters fighting have no trouble sensing each other in the darkness, yellow liquid painting the ground and walls. If you didn’t know any better, and if you didn’t pick up on the scent, it might look like paint. You appear to have arrived in the middle of the fight, but it’s soon over, and the only demon left is heaving with labored breaths, long wings outstretched and his back to you. He straightens to his full height, having been bent into a fighting stance previously, and twists around.
Glowing white eyes find you effortlessly, and a sinister smile curls at his mouth, sharp teeth menacing. You’re not frightened by the predatory leer as you reveal yourself fully from behind your hiding spot. He watches you walk closer, but your gaze isn’t on him—rather, it’s on the corpses littering the ground.
You hum in thought as you survey the scene, stepping over limbs and guts, the only bits of demon gore you can avoid because the blood is everywhere, and it covers the soles of your boots. “Well, you didn’t tear all of them to shreds at least.”
“It’s easy to get carried away.” The devilman’s voice is deep, and there’s a flanging to it, as though he’s speaking with two voices instead of just one. You shrug as though to say I guess and you’re not looking but can tell he’s shifting back, tendrils of black smoke shrouding the beast. It fades gradually and Akira now stands before you, back in human form and flanging distinctly absent from his voice.
“Do you have enough?” he asks.
You flip over a demon that looks to be in reasonable shape onto its back, and you’re satisfied to see its stomach hasn’t been cut open. One of the legs is missing and the arms are bent at strange angles, but you’ll make do. This is better than nothing.
“I do,” you confirm.
With hands tucked into your pockets, you turn to look at Akira. Blood stains his clothes and his hair and he tries to wipe off what sticks to his skin, but he isn’t entirely successful as some of it has dried.
“Hey, uh, I parked my motorcycle farther down the block,” he begins. “I don’t suppose you could give me a lift there?”
You did park closer than that, having left your car at the end of the alleyway for a short and easy walk. But you shake your head, brow raised as you motion to his bloodied form. “With you like that? You’ll stain the leather.”
Akira isn’t bothered by your refusal and merely chuckles, nodding his acquiescence. “Yeah… I figured.” He sighs heavily, the fatigue of the fight seeming to finally catch up to him. “I’ll see you later then.”
After he has made his leave, you stay to pack up the most intact demon body you had found. It really is simple for Akira to get carried away. You’re lucky there’s even one body to take back with you, for there have been times in the past he has torn them all limb from limb, ripped apart their torsos until entrails splattered on the ground, the squelch as he trampled them underfoot music to his ears. This sense of euphoria from slaying demons he had detailed to you a while ago, and though you understood the blood thirst and the satisfaction to sate it even slightly, you did have to keep reminding him to try leaving some in suitable condition.
I don’t get it, he’d said once before. If you want them in one piece, why don’t you do it?
The answer had been a simple one to you. The fighting’s dirty. I don’t like to be a bloody mess at the end of it. If that meant you had to wait until Akira left decently unmarked corpses, you would deal with it. Though to his credit, he’d been better about it lately. There’s at least one viable body each time he goes out on the hunt for bands of demons, and once there had even been three.
This demon is much heavier than the last. Granted, you don’t have any trouble pulling this one along in a bag and tossing it into the car, but you can still detect the vast differences in weight. The car sinks slightly under the added burden, and the trunk nearly doesn’t close due to the protrusions on this particular demon, with its large curled horns and spiked scales down the length of its back. Luckily you’re able to force it closed. You didn’t want to spend extra time tying a rope around the trunk to keep it shut. You’re tired, it’s been a long night, and you’d like to go home now.
———
Akira’s always been bad about keeping quiet.
He lets himself into your house with the spare key beneath the rug, and he closes the front door a little harder than necessary with the strength he sometimes forgets stays with him in human form. You hear it slam even from downstairs and flinch at the sudden interruption, but luckily you aren’t occupied with anything that requires a steady hand. He calls out your name but you don’t reply. He already knows where you are.
His footsteps coming down the staircase are loud, and you sigh. How he can get the drop on the demons he hunts is beyond you, when he makes so much noise as it is. Once he reaches the bottom and spots you, he flashes you a boyish grin.
“That the body from last night?”
You nod, your gaze dropping back down to the table where you set the demon corpse. You’ve cut open the torso, a neat slice across the chest and down the sternum. The thick, rough skin is pinned down with needles, several more than what a human cadaver would require. A bowl of viscous membrane you have peeled away to reveal the organs sits in a silver bowl, but that’s the most you have done so far. You stopped to wash your hands and take notes.
Akira stands on the other side of the table and glances down into the depths of the demon he killed. He likes to watch you work. At first, you’d asked him to stop, becoming unnerved to be scrutinized so closely. But he didn’t really listen. He’d leave for five minutes to scavenge your kitchen for food, and then he’d be back. You have since given up telling him to entertain himself elsewhere.
Eventually he goes from standing by the table to sitting in one of the sofa chairs you have placed down here. He lounges on it sideways, back against one arm and legs bent over the other. You’re completely absorbed in your task, sawing at bones to open up room to reach in. Blood covers your hands and the sleeves of the lab coat you wear. He doesn’t know exactly what part you’re searching for, but it apparently takes some time, as you make little cuts here and incisions there. You dip your hand in, and the torso is so large almost your entire forearm disappears as you lower it.
Aha! you exclaim quietly in victory. Akira’s brows furrow as you pull out… whatever organ that is. He’s not sure. But whatever it is, you’re happy to have found it, and you set it on a silver tray for further study with some of the finer tools.
“Why are you so interested in dissecting demons?” It’s a question he has had for a while, and he had never bothered to ask it until now. Perhaps it was the fascination inherent on your face as you scanned over your tools for the appropriate one, the excitement to dive further into the innards of the demon laying across the cold table, which pushed him to speak.
You don’t respond right away, picking up a scalpel and evaluating it before you seem to decide it’s a good choice. Nosce te ipsum, you then recite.
Akira tilts his head. He’s uncertain if that was a reply to his inquiry or if you’re just muttering to yourself. “Huh?”
“Know thyself,” you explain. “In Europe in the sixteenth century, the phrase was used to defend the necessity of human dissection, which was illegal at the time. It’s important to learn the mechanisms of one’s own body, and that’s best done by delving into a body like your own.” You punctuate your anecdote with a careful slice of the organ on the tray, and a thick black liquid oozes from the cut. Your eyes brighten in delight.
Akira nods slowly, putting together the pieces. “So you dissect demons to learn more about your demon side.”
You hum in affirmation. “Correct. I’ve long wondered what arrangement of organs lies beneath the surface when I take on that form.”
The way you handle each body part as you work is elegant. You separate each one slowly, making sure you don’t accidentally rupture or put undue pressure on other organs you have yet to take out. It’s a stark contrast to the brutal ravaging Akira gives the demons he kills. He can’t help it. He lives for the blood on his claws and the rip and tear of flesh. It makes perfect sense why you’re opposed to the idea of getting your hands dirty. It’s not in your nature to be messy—it hadn’t been before you merged with a demon, and it still remains as such. If there were cleaner methods to exterminating demons, you might be more open to the idea of killing them yourself. But who knows, maybe you’re already working on that as a small side project.
Some time passes. Akira doesn’t keep track, but he does fall asleep briefly at one point. He wakes back up and his stomach growls, but you’re not paying attention. A glance at the clock tells him it’s early evening, so he suggests the two of you get food.
You don’t always accept, wanting instead to remain in your lab, poring over demon guts. On those days, you settle for eating whenever you decide to call it quits, or you might not even eat at all. Every time he asks if you’d like to tag along, he hopes you’ll say okay. He likes your company.
It may be reasonable to assume that as of the current moment, you have no appetite. You’ve been working with a corpse for the last couple of hours, and the smell isn’t pleasant. But the assumption is wrong, for the thought of getting some food in your stomach sounds like a wonderful idea.
“What’d you have in mind?”
Akira smiles widely. “How about ramen?”
———
You return home alone. Akira had left after dinner, intent to hunt for the remainder of the evening. Once you arrive and set your keys in the bowl by the door, you contemplate returning to your work, but you don’t think you’ll be able to concentrate. The warm food made you sleepy, and you’ve been running low all day after the late night you had.
Instead, you settle for changing into comfortable clothes and relaxing. Your phone is left face-down on the coffee table as you walk into the kitchen to make a cup of tea. You're not expecting any calls or messages. At this time of night, it would usually only be cross streets from Akira, to let you know where you could find more demons to take back to the lab. But you had already told him before you parted earlier that he didn’t need to do that tonight. You’re still working away at the most recent corpse.
Since your mind still drifts to thoughts of said body downstairs, you decide to at least review the notes you’ve taken today. You sit on the couch, mug in one hand and notebook in the other. The pages are incredibly immaculate despite its proximity to all the demon offal, but you do consider yourself quite the neat freak. You wouldn’t stand for a drop of blood anywhere on your journal. Besides, you sometimes bring this with you when you go out, in case you should have any new thoughts on what you have researched, and dark red splotches would seem suspicious.
Once you catch up on everything you’ve written, you glance at the clock. It’s sufficiently late enough that you can shower and head to bed and it wouldn’t be too early. But it’s still earlier than usual, and you welcome the idea of a full night’s rest. You’ll resume your work first thing in the morning.
You always clean your hands thoroughly in the lab, but you never feel as though you have truly washed away the blood and sinew until you step into the shower, the hot water, entirely too hot for most but the perfect temperature for you, stinging your skin and turning it pink. Steam rises and fogs up the mirror and the bathroom smells like peaches. With the weather steadily growing colder, hot showers are all the more a comfort.
The towel you wrap around yourself is white and fluffy. Your wet hair clings to bare skin, tendrils gently curling as they stick to your shoulders and collarbones. You’re rifling through the closet for pajamas when the door opens and closes loudly.
Your brows furrow and you look towards your open bedroom door. You know who’s here, but unless he’d texted you while you were in the shower, you weren’t expecting to see him for the rest of the night. Unless…
Once more the heavy thud of his shoes pounding on the stairs echo throughout the house, and as he stomps down the hallway. He comes to a stop in the middle of the doorframe, and you see Akira standing before you, but you know it isn’t him entirely. The demon side of him is peeking through despite his human form, too strong and too desperate for indulgence to be contained. He’s snarling, eyes wild, fists clenched tightly and heaving hard as if he’s attempting to hold back. His gaze is predatory as he stares at you, the prey in his sights. But you are not at all helpless, you both understand that.
However, you also understand what it is Akira needs, why he’s here, and so you play your part, waiting there for him to sink his teeth in. You hear him inhale deeply, taking in your smell, not only the smell of your peach shampoo but the smell of you, the nuances of the scent which unmistakably make up who you are. And though you find yourselves cut from the same cloth, find yourselves to be kindred beasts of hell, even he moves too fast for you to track.
He doesn’t give you room to breath. His lips are on yours and his tongue shoves its way into your mouth and his hands are everywhere. Your muffled whimpers and weak squeezes at his biceps to slow down are only half an act. He doesn’t listen, and maybe it’s the lack of oxygen to your head or the fact you get it, you get what it feels like to lose control, that doesn’t leave you genuinely angered that he fails to let up.
You pant loudly when he finally gives your mouth a break, now focusing on the tender skin of your neck. He bites down, sharp teeth sinking in, and you scream because fuck, it genuinely hurts. His chuckle is dark as his hand trails up to untuck the towel around your body.
Come on, you can take it… he murmurs, licking up the blood pooling from the wounds.
And it’s true, you can take it. That was the whole point, how any of this began in the first place. It had been merely transactional, the relationship you had. Akira would provide demon corpses for you to study, and you’d provide him the space to release his baser urges when they became too much to ignore or handle himself. You were spared the trouble of messy fights, and he the possibility of harming a human. There was no worry about harming you. You’re half human but also half demon, and like him, you have far greater strength than your fully human counterparts.
Akira tosses you onto the bed and you bounce slightly on the mattress. He crawls over you and toys with your breasts, squeezing and pinching and nipping. Your fingers curl in his mane of black hair, relaxed for the most part but occasionally digging in if he bites too hard. Through hazy vision you notice he’s still fully clothed, and you tug weakly at the collar of his shirt.
“You’re overdressed,” you force out hoarsely. Sometimes you’re uncertain if Akira can even hear you in his lust-fueled hazes.
But it seems, at least tonight, he can, as he momentarily sits up to pull off his shirt. He takes the opportunity to also rid himself of his pants. Then he returns his attention to you, and the spot between your legs. His fingers firmly slide along the length of your slit and apply pressure on your swollen clit and you squeal, attempting in vain to close your legs to get away from the pleasure which is quickly sliding from just right to too much.
Akira laughs and pulls his hand away, holding it up so you can see how it glistens in the soft light of your bedroom. “Such a good girl, getting so wet for me…”
Without warning, he flips you onto your stomach and gropes harshly at your hips to position you the way he wants. You feel the head of his cock nudging at your folds and you bite your lip, but even for the anticipation as you rest your cheek on the blankets, staring at the far wall, you aren’t prepared when he pushes all the way in, giving you no time to adjust. Your teeth sink deeper and you taste blood on your tongue and you can’t keep the noise down, you never can (not that Akira would let you), and you scream at the deep intrusion. Akira is big, and though you have taken him before, you don’t think you’ll ever adjust completely.
His fingers dig into the supple flesh of your ass so tightly that his nails leave crescent moon marks, and he watches, enraptured, at the spot where you’re joined, watches as his cock slides in and out, smoothly, easily, due to your arousal. The squelch as he pushes in and the slap of skin against skin is vulgar and filthy and he thinks he could eat you whole. Would you let him, he wonders?
A particularly hard thrust prompts you to let out a shocked yelp, and your hips lower, like you’re trying to get away, in search of a reprieve from the overstimulation. He doesn’t let you (Where do you think you’re going?), one arm wrapping around your torso to pull you up against his chest. His free hand he trails up your stomach, past your breasts (your breath hitches as he passes over a nipple, sensitive and swollen) and he slides his fingers into your mouth.
You’re tired from being fucked so hard and you think you might pass out and you nearly gag when he presses down on your tongue. Akira! you mumble around his fingers. Drool dribbles out of the corner of your mouth and you wrap your hands around each of his wrists as a way to ground yourself since at this angle, you can’t reach the blankets. His grunts are loud and low in your ear as his thrusts grow sloppier.
You mewl and call his name again, goading him closer and closer to the edge. You’re almost there too, and evidently he can tell, as the arm around your waist moves down and his hand finds your clit. He rubs at it quickly and you snap, screaming as you cum. With your mouth open, he retracts his fingers and crosses that arm over your chest to keep you against him, for your body is trying to curl in on itself from the force of your orgasm.
“Fuck.”
The feeling of you squeezing around his cock nearly makes him cum, but this angle isn’t quite good enough, not deep enough. He pushes you forward and you fall limply on the bed, and he bends over you, chest pressed to your back and arms on either side of your head. You only have labored pants to give in response to the last few hard thrusts, exhausted as you are, and he orgasms with a growl.
You moan lowly at the feel of hot cum gushing deep into your belly. As a devilman, the amount Akira releases is a lot more than usual, and you never have room for it all. This is proven by the white liquid seeping out around his cock, and he smirks when he notices it. My cum too much for you, baby? he teases.
But you don’t have the energy to talk, and it seems he doesn’t mind your lack of an answer. He pulls out and you wince, oversensitive and sleepy. So sleepy…
So much for that shower.
———
You sigh deeply.
Dark purple splotches litter your body, in places that would be hidden from view when you wear clothes but also in places where they would be fully on display. You press a finger gingerly into one by your collarbone, and it throbs slightly in response to the added pressure. Man… And just when the last set of bites marks Akira had given you had faded.
You hear the rustle of bedsheets and step away from the bathroom mirror to peek your head out. Akira’s brows are furrowed and he turns away from the sunlight pouring in from the window. His breathing isn’t as deep so you know he’s at least slightly awake, but his eyes remain closed like he’s trying to fall asleep again, not quite ready to face the day.
The blankets are a mess and you’ll have to wash them today, but that can wait until after Akira wakes up. However, you don’t end up waiting as long as you think you’ll have to, for he’s given up his efforts to fall back to sleep, and his eyes slide open while you’re bent over to dig out panties from the bottom drawer.
“Not a bad sight to wake up to.”
With a roll of your eyes he can’t see, you stand back up straight and look at him over you shoulder. “Good morning to you too.”
Akira smiles, but it fades as his attention trails lower once you turn around. He doesn’t ask if he really did all that. He’d had full consciousness, full control, last night, and he was aware of every mark he left. To voice the question would be a waste of breath, so he skips over it. “Sorry. I hope it didn’t hurt too much.”
The boy in your bed is drastically different from the one who’d been there last night. His gaze is apologetic even for his lighthearted teasing and it makes you smile softly.
“It did a little bit,” you state truthfully as you drop an oversized shirt over your head. “But it’s okay. I can take it after all.”
Akira chuckles to hear his words repeated from the night before. He throws back the blankets, standing up and finding his own clothes. “Well let me buy you breakfast. To treat you for taking it so well.”
Breakfast does sound nice, and you’re not about to argue over who pays, not if Akira’s offering. Still, you can’t help playing around, as you hum in mock thought. “Hm… I guess, if you insist.”
It’s Akira’s turn to roll his eyes and you laugh. “Hey, don’t push it.” But he’s just playing around too, judging by his grin.
The relationship you share had at the beginning been transactional, nothing more than business, but it can’t be confidently said whether either of you was sure it would remain that way. Spend enough time in each other’s presence and you were bound to grow closer. Neither of you had shied away from this development. In fact, both of you like it this way better. Maybe you’re made for each other. Maybe the devils inside you are.
Each morning brings with it the falling away of dark, carnal desires and thoughts of the demons in need of eradication or of close studying. It ushers in a chance to forget, even for just a few hours. And if you don’t read between the lines, life almost seems normal. That’s more than good enough.

Fear
Ever since hearing this song in 7x13 for the first time, I was HYPE AF for it to be dropped on the soundtrack. Prepare to rock.
Oh, and analysis and stuff under the cut. But don’t be surprised if I just jam out.
Like “Armed and Ready,” they trick you with the slow piano opening.
I understand if you’d rather not talk about this.
Goddammit, this has been bothering me since February first. This line sounds SO FAMILIAR, like, I can HEAR someone saying it in my head, but I can’t remember what episode it’s from! Is it real? Does anyone know if this line has been said in the show?
There’s always a chance that we might remain in ignorant bliss.
The theme of “Time to Say Goodbye.” They mourn the loss of their youth more than anything.
Welcome, guitars >:)
We are lucky if our lives can avoid it.
This line could actually be taken literally -- if you avoid fear, you avoid Grimm. A totally Grimm-free life on Remnant sounds VERY hard to come by.
WHO WILL YOU SEEEEE
That’s not a line I’m going to analyze, I’m just jamming out.
But seriously, look at this chorus:
Who will you see there in the darkness? When no one is watching, who will you be? When you’re afraid, when everything changes, will you see a stranger? Feel proud or betrayed?
The point of fear isn’t that you can’t control it, that you can’t wrestle with it. Who you become when you’re wrestling with it is the real issue. Fear makes you make bad choices and terrible mistakes, even if you’re trying to protect yourself from it. But that’s beholden only to you. You are the only person who will be able to control that. When no one is watching, who will you be?
All of your life, guided by truth, right from the start.
Truth is what a lot of our characters had relied on in Volume Seven to make the right decisions. Sharing the truth, after all, is one of the best ways to build trust, the enemy of fear. But then:
One twist of fate, in the blink of an eye, and it all falls apart.
Notice that they didn’t say “one twist of chance.” I believe the reference to fate was a direct callout of “do you believe in destiny” -- that some things, no matter how unfortunate, were always meant to happen. Once you realize that, like Ironwood did, there’s no amount of truth or trust that can assuage the fear of fate.
WILL YOU mAAAKE the RIGHT chOOOICE in THAT MOOOOOOMeeeeent epic violin will you staaand aaaaand bE BRAAAVE OOOOOR BE BROOOOOOOOKEEEEEEN??
But seriously. Ozpin’s speech rocks, and so do these lines.
There’s been a lack of awesome guitar solos this album. This one did not disappoint.
We live in fear that we might fail. Fear that we’ll succeed. Fear that we may not provide the things our loved ones need.
Ironwood’s fear that Salem will win, RWBY’s fear that Ironwood will go through with his plan, and I think Ruby’s fear that she won’t live up to Yang and Qrow’s expectations that she’ll be as great/inspiring as Summer.
But our greatest fear will be realized if we fall and lose ourselves to fear, we’ve become what we feared all our lives.
This is why Salem is a good villain, imho. “Never underestimate the usefulness of others.” She doesn’t need to destroy humanity herself -- they’ll do it for her, if she creates the fears that will push them into it. Maybe the real Salem was the friends we made along the way.
Wait for it... wait for it...
WHO WILL YOU SEEEEE
Love this song <3 I feel it in my bones when I listen to it. It may have usurped “Divide” as my favorite credits song, which is funny, considering how thematically similar they are.
Thanks everyone for reading! These analyses are always fun to do. Until next year!

[ 365 Days of SasuHina || Day Two Hundred Twenty-Six: On a Mission ] [ Uchiha Sasuke, Hyūga Hinata, Hatake Kakashi, Uchiha Shisui, Uchiha Itachi ] [ SasuHina ] [ Verse: A Light Amongst Shadows ] [ AO3 Link ]
Once he formed the police force, Sasuke knew he would rarely - if ever - go back to shinobi work. The force was exactly what he wanted. A steady schedule, working in the village he was determined to better. He got to work with the people that had come to shun him, rebuilding his reputation on his own, with honest labor...forging connections and earning the villagers’ trust. Especially the civilians.
But...his power is undeniable. Naruto may also be on his tier...but as he trains to take on the Hokage mantle, he’s not always as available as he once was to take charge and be the village hero.
So...every so often, Sasuke finds himself receiving a notice from the administration building regarding a mission they need him for. In truth...they make him weary. He’d much rather say no and keep to his work, but...well, there’s little refusing these kinds of pleads for help.
In the middle of a case file writeup one afternoon, he looks over his shoulder at a pecking against his office window. A messenger hawk with the typical Hokage seal on the message.
Kakashi.
Sighing and bringing the bird in, Sasuke unravels the message, absentmindedly stroking the avian’s feathers. Another mission...and his brow furrows at the second half.
Hyūga Hinata is to accompany him.
...well that’s interesting.
While Hinata is, admittedly, becoming a powerhouse among her peers...comparing her to himself or Naruto isn’t exactly fair. What could she be needed for in a mission of Sasuke’s apparent caliber…?
As a knock sounds, he gives an acquiescing grunt, glancing up to see none other than the Hyūga in question with a notation of her own. “...so, they sent you one too?” he mutters, lifting his letter.
“I guess they wanted to be sure they caught us.”
“A bit late in the day for a mission, but...well, guess we’ll see what’s going on.”
“We might be being briefed early so we can have time to prepare before leaning in the morning.”
Sasuke blinks. In truth...he knows little of Konoha mission protocol. It wasn’t like he went on many before...leaving. “...makes sense.”
Clocking out and giving the rest of the on-duty staff a heads up, the pair head towards the Hokage’s tower. “Any guesses what this will be?”
“No idea, really,” Hinata admits. “It could be anything, given the combination they’re going with. I’m built for tracking and recon...and you’re a powerhouse.”
They don’t have long to muse before reaching Kakashi’s office. On one side of the room, as per usual, is Shisui on his guard post. Shikamaru stands beside the desk, the pair talking and looking up as the two officers make their way in. “Ah, good timing,” the Rokudaime chirps, steepling his hands atop his desk. “We just got some more information regarding the mission you two have been assigned.”
Arms folding, Sasuke just asks, “Which is?”
“Always straight to the point, hm? All right, here’s our intel so far…” Kakashi’s aura loses its light and airy mood, sobering as he leans forward. “With Orochimaru confined to one of the hideouts, the rest were cleared out not long after the war. However...one has begun to show signs of activity. Orochimaru has assured us they have nothing to do with it, but...well, we need to tread carefully. While Konoha did work with the sannin to ensure all data and projects were taken care of, we can’t be sure Orochimaru was totally honest with us. It might just be raiders looking for trouble, or...it might be something more serious. Either way, we’re coordinating with the ANBU to monitor the situation.”
There’s a perked brow. So...Itachi and his officers will be there. That should be interesting. “...so why are we being dragged into it?” Sasuke asks. Surely the ANBU could handle a few rogues on their own.
“Hinata has the best ranged Byakugan in her clan, according to most sources. We want her to get close enough to examine the entire underground facility from the surface, and see what exactly is going on before we send anyone in. Your primary purpose is to protect her while she investigates from a distance. Then, if there’s something average going on, the ANBU will move in to clear things out. If it’s something beyond them…”
“...I’ll get to do the heavy lifting.”
“Precisely,” Kakashi replies, eyes closing with a smile.
“...seems pretty straightforward.”
“Fantastic. You have the rest of today to prepare, and you’ll be expected out at first light tomorrow.”
“You know more about Orochimaru than just about anyone,” Shisui cuts in, finally speaking. “One theory is that there might be some of his old experiments involved. After you killed them, reports said many of the places went dark, and the people held in the hideouts got loose, including those the snake sannin worked on. There’s no telling who might be coming back to either steal research, or exact revenge for all Orochimaru did to them. If there’s someone there with unknown abilities, best you handle it.”
“True enough,” Sasuke replies dryly.
“This is the map we were given of the facility,” Kakashi offers, holding out a scroll that Hinata accepts. “But there may very well be rooms unmarked or hidden. Keep your eyes peeled.”
She just nods curtly.
“With that, I give you leave to prepare. Rendezvous with the ANBU captain on site, and confer from there. He’ll be keeping us updated here - consider him your commanding officer.”
That earns a short snort from Sasuke. Taking orders from Itachi...lovely.
With nothing left to say, the pair are given their leave, discussing preparations as they go. Unraveling the map, Hinata lets Sasuke hover over her shoulder. “Huh...the eastern hideout.”
“You know it well?”
“Enough. That’s where Suigetsu was kept. A lot of experiments were handled there. I can see why it might be a target. They all had their uses and potential for raiding, but a lot of genetic work was done there specifically.”
Hinata considers that quietly, looking over the map. “...this seems rather...intricate.”
“They all were. It was meant to keep anyone wandering in from finding anything useful.”
Once home, the pair pack their supplies, keeping packs by the door. Easier to get up and going come morning. Otherwise, they spend the evening studying the mission details, and resting up before the trek to the hideout.
As they prepare to leave the next morning, Sasuke can’t help but reminisce a bit about the old missions he and his team took. Nothing like this of course, given they were still genin when the team disbanded...but most of his assignments since returning to Konoha have been solo. Having a partner will be a nice change of pace. Especially one he knows, trusts, and works with as well as Hinata.
Heading through the gate, they quickly set a decent pace, taking to the trees and leaping toward the mark on the map. For some reason, something nags at the back of Sasuke’s mind...but he shoves the thought aside. It’s going to be fine. There’s nothing he can’t handle...especially if his brother will be there as a backup with his own officers.
Hinata, a few miles out, activates her Byakugan and scouts out the ANBU captain’s location, leading them right to him. Eyes on the hideout entrance about fifty meters away, Itachi gives a glance as they arrive. “You made good time.”
“We always aim to please,” is the younger brother’s reply. “Any activity?”
“Nothing yet, but a sensor has been able to identify at least two dozen signatures inside. Hinata-san...if you would.”
Nodding, she turns to the base, letting her kekkei genkai activate once more. Without moving, she scans over the entire underground structure, occasionally bringing her gaze back to check against the map.
...then her brow furrows.
“...something wrong?” Sasuke asks, catching the change immediately.
“...I think…” Hesitating a moment, she points to a place blank on the scroll. “...there’s a room here.”
“Are you sure?”
“There’s...something. It’s odd, it’s like it’s resisting my kekkei genkai, but...something isn't right. It’s like...a strange static.”
The brother’s glance to one another. “...sounds like reason enough to head in,” Sasuke offers. “If Orochimaru withheld that information...there might be something there.”
“Especially if it’s hidden to a kekkei genkai like the Byakugan,” Itachi agrees. “...you go in first, start clearing a path. My officers and I will follow.”
“And Hinata?”
“Is likely safest with you. Besides, you need her to guide you to that room. Beyond clearing the base of the invaders, this is our new secondary objective.”
“Got it. Ready Hinata?”
“Ready.”
“...then let’s go”
.oOo.
I'm sorry this ended on a cliffhanger, BUT it's getting very late, and I didn't want to go way overboard word count-wise. Sorry guys! I'll try to have a sequel soon. This is actually a canon-ish scene from the fic that I'll likely never write, lol - aka A Light Amongst Shadows, what I call this verse. I've only written it once back in the original RP that inspired the story, but it's changed a good bit...and will likely change again if I ever DO write the fic. What could be lurking in the hideout...? We'll have to seeeee! :3c Anywho, on that evil note, I need to head to bed lol - thanks for reading!

Adventure Time Finale Liveblog
Already this episode is off to a weird start, starting with a flashforward in the future with two random one-off characters and- OH MY GOSH THEY FOUND FINN’S ARM AND THEY LIVE IN MARCELINE’S HOUSE NOW!
Did Finn like die? THis has to be a fakeout about this.
King of Ooo is alive far int he future? he melted in the fire as wax remember writers?
Oh my gosh this is why they showed the Enchiridion episode last, Mount Kragdor is back!
the king of Ooo is BMO! Wait why does he have PB’s crown... oh my god BMO outlived everybody. he is unfazed by death
BMO is kickin’ em out already, what a savage
That arm is giving BMO some flashbacks. Awww adorable!
Heh after so long BMO is having trouble remembering Finn’s name.
The plot description said NEPTR was telling the story, they faked us out totally!
Finally, more Betty!
Finally, more Maja!
Looking at Finn is like “you die eventually. BMO has your arm now.”
Having BMO narrate the whole story makes it sound like a five year old trying to describe World War II.
Finally Duke of Nuts, my favorite character!
Literally no one likes him, he wants to be MacGyver
Justin Roiland has work while R n M is off
Princess Bubblegum is going the Leia route of going from Princess to General
Oh no a little cake spy.
Huntress Wizard, played by Mona Lisa from Parks and Rec, did a good job getting rid of that sky
Come along with me, it is time for war you seeeee
Marceline and PB better makeout RIGHT NOW Marceline, yes, please reconsider PB Oh geez Marceline is just casually like “I saw people die PB.” Marceline be like “I felt worse” all over us
Finn is right.
W-what? Finn whatcha goin on about with nightmares? I thought he was gonna break the fourth wall
I love when a war begins with someone repeating “WAR” over and over
Yep yep there goes the banana guards. What a great plan
“You’re weird” isn’t what I’d say honestly
He doesn’t know what fruit is apparently
Lemongrab is totally piiiiiissed... Oh he’s just sad.
Gumbald literally is backing UP because of them being serious Finny boy
Hey Fern, remember when I accidentally killed ya? Good times boi
“You’re a toddler” is the cue for “I kill you or you give up”
What a great time for a commercial break.
Okay, time for my thoughts in-between the show: this is giving me crazy feelings. Like, knowing BMO outlives everyone, regardless of the war’s outcome... wait, BMO said Finn was heroic til the end right? Oh my gosh will Finn sacrifice himself? Well either way BMO probably SAW him die, old age or not. BMO is literally the imbodement of a child who doesn’t understand the consequences of anything. Back to the show!
Nice job making me almost sad BMO.
Unconscious world? That’s crazy man.
So no war? Aiight.
Finn was all like “go to dreamworld and talk things out” and they be like “let’s have a war again”
Ooh cool, let’s get those songs for the album here
Jake is going back to his roots
Ooh let’s get Tom Sharpling up in this guys
Aww poor Fern.
PB isn’t reluctant at all to kill someone even if they look like Finn, as long as they be an enemy.
Oh sweet evolution Fern!
Fern is going the toddler solution, that’s fine.
Okay Greg from Steven Universe, enjoy your appearance while it lasts.
Is John DiMaggio spending the episode in a dream state?
Pinching people in the dreamworld really wakes you up? That’s dope.
W-what? why’d they just vibrate
Fern does sound like a knockoff Finn sometimes honestly. Heh prove you’re tormented Finn!
Oh geez this is really dark, PB had a messup life. Recreating that scene for some symbolism I suppose!
Ooh subconscious world!
Aww his girlfriend is here- I wish I spoke korean.
It’s nice his kids- oh nevermind.
Is this symbolism for him being connected to his wife like by the sides?
Hahah we got a fart joke everyone, wrap it up! Just kiddin I don’t care either way
I bet Pb is learning what it was like living as a completely unintelligent being without any choice. Will this cause some empathy?
Yeah repressed memories must smell awful.
Obviously Fern and Finn share the same memories, but it’s cool to see them confront it Mindful Education-style
I missed Adventure Time’s art style honestly.
Oh I get it, Fern originated from the Finnsword.
Oh wow, all of that took place in the span of one second!
PB and Gumbald are learning empathy now, are we not having a war or?
“No no no that happened next.” Good job faking out the fake out.
I love these breaks telling us small bits of lore and secrets about what’s going on that we’re not noticing. Anyway, I am excited to find out what this portal is exactly- I’m guessing Magic Man, Betty, and Maga’s weird cryptic chant is gonna cause some big bad event. Will Adventure Time end with the end of the world? I’d be mega shocked if Finn just died. Wait why isn’t Marceline in the future? Realistically she should be there UNLESS she got killed, soooo... back to the show!! :D
We saved the day! Big scary baby is definitely good!
Wait Fern is in the real world now???
Ice King was just gonna leave until he had that flashback
It is so cute seeing Betty and Simon’s past, I wwant fanart of them having a happy life.
Did I mention FP is super cute? I love Flame Princess
This is getting quite dark man. Even Marcy is scared.
PB don’t martyr yourself
Aww what a great leader, telling her army to flee in terror instead of dying without purpose!
Oooh Fern is on good side now!
Gumball Guardians are her real children
Is this even a kids episode? this should be rared PG-13 man
I hope all this rogue gallery characters still get lines. oh there they go
Heh Jake and Amethyst have some similarities don’t they
Wow what a dark end for someone, skull cracks open and innards bounce around and endanger people
Ice King is the savior! How cute
This is more epic than Reunited but that’s not fair to say exactly, one is finale and one is a special
Oh no poor bananas, so dumb
Let’s go Jake, doing what he does best and being helpful!
Did Jake explode and die?
Remember when LSP and Lemongrab dated?
Aww Lemongrab and LSP is a canon ship, only straight ship allowed for those two
Come on Ice King, remember who you and Betty are!
Ice King is reciting the song from the episode. Oh my gosh come on dude, replace at least ONE word in the song silly!
Betty is too crazy to not throw a tantrum I guess.
Maga the Sky Witch- Kill Count 1
No no no Flame Princesssss! Maybe she’s okay?
Fernnn!
Did PB just die? Oh my glob
Oh Marcy’s going back to her roots
Okay PB is alive, it’s fine.
Marceline just had a PLanet Hulk moment right there.
Aww it’s canon now guys! Marceline X Bubblegum eternally and they kissssed! Guys they made up for so long of teasing!
Oh no I think they’re breaking them apart layer-by-layer
Ice King is Simon again, yeyyy!
I love that the moment PB and Marcy are confirmed gay for real they just have them holding each other close to prove it even more
Finally Jakei s confirmed not dead
Oh no is Jake dead, 2.0.?
Finally we have a reason BMO knows what happens. He nearly died.
Okay so... Flame Princess and Fern are taken out while Maga is definitely dead. I have a feeling Marceline might die,or else we’ll need a thorough explanation for why she’s not living in her house. Like I can tell that this character voiced by Willow Smith is Jake’s descendant but Marceline is potentially an immortal I assumed so they wouldn’t have her be gone without explanation. Then, here’s a question: is Jake about to sacrifice himself to save BMO?? Also, BMO straight-up says the world ended so I have a feeling that he wasn’t just being coy.
Oh my glob, what’s about to happen. Jake and Finnn’s home is destroyed.
BMO is getting deep. Okay HE’S SINGING THE SONG :D
Is this about to have a Rogue One ending? How is this going to end happily?
This song is meant to be bittersweet, no way is this a happy ending song guys.
Is BMO secretly badass? CARTOON CONSPIRACY No it’s just the power of music.
Oh I get it! Discord, Harmony, Music, it all makes sense!
Oh literally everyone sings this! along with screaming!
They got so many voice actors for this!
Is he going to explode? Oh my glob?
Here lies Finn. he was a good man. I love him.
“No one gets to choose how it happens. the most important thing is that we’re here together.” Nice way to make me sad twice
Is Simon going to become Simon forever? What’s going on here? Is Betty going to get her bones crushed???
Aww how cute of you Betty. not making my heart any calmer
Ooh yes he’s Simon again :DDD
Oh my gosh this is a crazy kind of ending
Oh no I’m scared now.
thanks for the reminder of The Tandem Elephant’s existence man. Okay, so... this is crazy. Simon is back, like for real, he’s not dying or anything... Betty is potentially dead... Finn didn’t die, which is dope... my eyes are watering, definitely not about to cry. I can’t believe it I’m emotional over cartoon show wow. Just knowing I have eight more minutes until it for real is all over. Maybe I’ll just like, watch it again so I can pretend it didn’t end yet? No that’d be fake. I normally don’t even cry in situations where it’d make sense so this is telling for me I guess. These commercials really make me appreciate how good the show I’m watching are. :’D Okay so, I don’t think Magi actually died, although it’s hard to tell really since I didn’t get a good look at her. I have no idea what is about to happen but I am freaking out.
Ultimate Adventure continues now
Oh wow Betty fused with the crystal boi
Simon and Marcy, reunited for real
Imagine how much it must suck to wake up after so long of being stuck as someone else
I DON’T FEEL SO GOOD. is that a reference... Oooniverse?
Okay so Gunter is the future beard boy I guess.
Oh wow they grew a Fern. and found a new sword.
YES HE SCREAMED. THE BOY SCREAMSSS!
Thanks for disobeying me Finn
Finn officially has the singular arm. Dope.
Future baby boy has a big beard
Finn and Jake can’t live forever, this is the past yes
Ooh the music hole is here again! Epic callback broos
Ooh the hole sings the End Credits Song oh geez
New Ice King is Gunter, old ICe King is Simon
Ooh nice glimpses of what might become of some of our friends in the future
Ooooh Lemongrab and Jake get along better.
Aww cute his dad is going to space now
Flame Princess and NEPTR friends forever
Jiggler callback!
Susan is here!
Normal Man is cool!
Huntress Wizard continues to be fun!
PB and Marcy are still gay, Pep But is still edgyyyy
THE HUMANS ARE BAAAAAACCCCCKKKK
They found the sword oh glorb!
OH WOW THEY JUST HINTED AT WHAT A FUTURE ADVENTURE TIME SPINOFF WOULD BE LIKE!
I LOVE THE FACT THAT THEY DIDN’T RESET BUTTON US BUT DIDN’T KILL EVERYBODY OR SOMETHING!
Okay I have a lot of thoughts... that was a ffinale. It really was. It was not something I got disappointed in because they didn’t wrap up anything. It wasn’t like waiting 10 years for 10 more episodes of a cartoon. It was like epic man. I naerly teared up guys. It didn’t end with a Reset Button like some finales would- Everything Stays, but it still changed. Sorry, this post is too long for anyone to read all the way through, but I still hope you enjoyed my thoughts on the last Adventure Time episode. A zillion out of ten guys.

I also stumbled upon some...strange edits on YouTube (*coughedwardandstileswhodidthatcoughcough*) so I’m changing my entire blog and I’m going to be writing Edward/Stiles fics LMAO JK, but I saw a really interesting edit about Dean Winchester and Stiles being brothers and I was like hmmmmm ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) you might be onto something. I WANT TO WRITE MORE THINGS. BUT I ALSO AM LIKE…..DO I HAVE THE TIME. CAN I DO IT CONSISTENTLY WITHOUT LETTING PEOPLE DOWN. WHAT DO PEOPLE WANT TO SEE, pls talk to me.
Anyway,,,i’m also considering changing DD updates to Mondays because that seems to be when I actually finish writing them, so we’ll seeeee. Thanks again for reading if you read all of this authors note maybe reply with ur favorite emoji idk maybe maybe not
Word Count: 2030
Summary: Scott helps Y/N in a time of need.
Chapter Title: Magic Touch
My first flare up was at the Spring Fling at the end of sophomore year. I had wanted to go to the dance with my friends but they had wanted to go with these boys on the baseball team. They paired me with some guy who was also on the baseball team, but never actually played, Johnny Walnut. The only reason he was invited was because he had a car. One of the guys swiped some vodka from his parents liquor cabinet and everyone drank away in Johnny’s cramped VW Rabbit.
I was miserable. Johnny kept trying to hold my hand during the ride there, my friends were making out with their dates, the car reeked of vodka and weed. I thought things would be better when we actually got to the dance but oh, was I wrong.
My friends immediately ditched me once their heels hit the pavement, leaving me alone with Johnny Walnut who only wanted to talk about his collection of G.I. Joe action figures and how we could use vegetable oil to power our washing machines or whatever. I could feel a headache coming on and I didn’t know if it was from Johnny’s cologne, the loud music or the residual pot smell. I felt like I was going to puke.
I ended up curled up up on the floor outside the girl’s bathroom, clutching my stomach in pain. I thought I was dying. I remember someone laughing and thinking that I was extremely wasted. A group of students had formed a circle around me and were all gawking for a good five minutes before a chaperone finally stepped in and saw me having a fit on the floor. Luckily, she had the sense to call an ambulance and then my parents and countless tests later, I had my diagnosis.
At least this time around I knew what was wrong with me and I had made it to the bathroom.
I didn’t want to go back to the hospital.
Melissa and Scott had offered up a spare bed for me to sleep in. I was just getting used to being normal again and I didn’t want all of that to end. Hot tears ran down my face as I leaned against the toilet for support. “Please,” I gasped, clutching my aching sides, “Please, stop.”
There was a knock on the door. I groaned, hoping it wasn’t Melissa because she for sure would march me back to Beacon Hills Memorial.
“Y/N?” It was Scott. Thank God. “Y/N, is everything okay?”
“I’m fine,” I lied, “I’m okay, just go.”
There was a silence on the other side of the door, so I figured he had listened to me. Then the door knob jiggled, “Y/N, I’m coming in, okay?”
Another sharp pain ripped through my side and I gasped, unable to protest. In Scott McCall walked and saw me in a sweaty heap on his bathroom floor.
“Y/N?” Scott immediately kneeled down next to me, “Y/N, what’s wrong?”
“N-nothing,” I choked out, “I’m fine, I’m fine.”
“You don’t look fine,” Scott looked me over, worry all over his face, “Y/N, we need to get you some help. I’ll get my mom.”
“No!” I grabbed onto his arm so that he wouldn’t get up and leave, “No, Scott, please. I don’t wanna go back. Please, please, Scott, please, I don’t want to. Please don’t let them take me back.”
I was a sobbing, blubbering mess and poor Scott looked like he regretted stepping into my whirlwind.
“How can I help you, Y/N?” Scott’s tone was soft and (almost) comforting. But there wasn’t anything he could do. I shook my head, “S’fine I ju-just need the pain to go away.”
He cautiously held a hand up to me, “Then let me help you, Y/N. Do you trust me?”
I looked up at him, but the pain was so intense he was fading in and out of focus. I cast my gaze down to the floor and nodded. Scott scooted closer to me on the floor and sat down. Then, he took my hand in his and placed his other hand on top of it. I thought he was helping me get up, so I tried to bring myself to my feet, but he gently pulled me back down.
“Just, close your eyes, Y/N.”
I did as he told, shutting my eyes. I felt a tingling sensation run up from my sides, through my arm and out the hand that Scott was holding. As the tingling went through my body, it seemed to take the pain...away. All of the different feelings in my body were too much and my head flopped over until it landed on something soft. My breathing slowed down s the tingling continued and the excruciating pain I felt slowly turned into a dull throbbing and then, into nothing. There was a ringing in my ears but other than that I felt completely fine in a matter of seconds. How?
I opened my eyes to see that my head had found its way on Scott’s shoulder. Scott’s forehead was beaded with sweat and his eyes were now shut.
“Scott?” I whispered, “Scott are you okay?”
Scott nodded but kept his eyes closed, “Yeah, yeah I’m okay. Let’s just sit here for a while, okay?”
I looked down at our hands. “How did you do that?” I murmured.
“Do what?” He asked.
“You...it’s like you took the pain away,” I opened his hand to see if there was some kind of magic needle or something that he could’ve cured me with.
His breathing was labored, “I read somewhere...that physical touch...it helps with pain.”
“You must have some kind of magic touch then,” I ran my fingers over the palm of his hand.
“Something like that.”
--
I took it easy for the rest of the day. I felt better, but Scott felt better if I limited my movement to practically nothing at all, so I used the time to catch up on social media while Scott fixed us something to eat. I thought it would make me feel more connected to all my friends and family, but it honestly made me feel like a stranger in my own life.
My Aunt had gotten engaged and was planning to move to New Jersey with her soon to be spouse, my friends were posting cute pictures of them with their significant others or traveling over the summer or first day of school photos. My uncle and his husband just adopted their first child. I felt like life had been passing me by while I was frozen in a carbonite bath or something. What was my life?
I felt a tear slip down my cheek but I quickly brushed it away. What was feeling sorry for myself going to help? Crying wasn’t going to get rid of my lupus. It wasn’t going to make me better, or normal, or give me my life back. I could hear Scott coming back up the stairs, so I closed my laptop and set it to the side. I pulled the sleeve of my sweater between my teeth as I thought to myself. I thought I could hold it together, but seeing Scott come in with a big smile and a tray of food for some reason made me feel worse about myself. I pressed the sleeve of my sweater against my mouth and looked out the window.
“So, I got tomato soup and grilled cheese because, well, it always makes me feel better after--Y/N what’s wrong?”
I wiped my face and shrugged.
Scott set the tray down and kneeled down in front of my bed, “You’re crying. Did it come back again?”
I sniffled and shrugged my shoulders again, “I’m fine.”
Scott frowned, “Are you really fine...or are you just saying that because you’ll think I’ll go away?”
“I’m as fine as I can be,” I snapped. “I mean, I’m not in agonizing pain, I’m sitting in this bed, safe from all of life’s dangers, I’m alive but,” I paused to have an incredulous laugh, “Am I even really living? Everyone I know, everyone’s life is just moving forward but I’m stuck stagnant in one place. I’m not going anywhere. What’s even the point of being alive if I’m not even living because it’ll kill me?”
I didn’t want Scott to see me in a huge breakdown, so I pulled the collar of my sweater up and over my face. My arms wrapped around my knees as I brought them to my chest and I positioned myself so that I was leaning against the headboard, “I just want to be left alone right now, Scott. Please.”
After what I figured was consideration, I heard Scott get up. I heard his footsteps go over to the door and after a brief pause I heard the door shut behind him. I could also hear him sigh on the other side and head down the stairs.
I only hoped he didn’t hear me sobbing. But knowing Scott, he probably did.
--
I don’t remember falling asleep, but I do remember waking up in the middle of the night and eating the soup. It wasn’t half bad. I remember faintly hearing Scott having a conversation downstairs. I remembered doing a lot of staring at walls.
There was a soft knock on my door. When Scott poked his head in, the bright yellow hall light broke through into my room.
“Hey, Y/N.”
I gave him the best smile I could muster, “Hi, Scott.”
Scott gave me a slight boyish smile in return and stepped inside the room, “I had something I wanted to show you, but it’s kind of super dangerous so I want your okay on it.”
I raised an eyebrow and sat up to get a good look at him, “Is it...drugs?”
“What?” Scott’s eyes widened in alarm, “No? I would never--”
“Okay, good,” I put a hand over my chest, “I’ve had enough out of body experiences for now.”
“Oh, well, then I guess you wouldn’t be interested in,” Scott raised his hands and I could see he was holding a motorcycle helmet in both of them, “A super exhilarating late night motorcycle ride. I hear people ride motorcycles because it makes them feel alive.”
I blinked at him. There was no way he was actually suggesting this and there was no way that Melissa okay’d this. “You’re serious?”
“Why wouldn’t I be?”
“Um, because if the motorcycle didn’t kill us, Melissa would.”
“What?” Scott laughed, “Y/N, it’s totally safe. I wouldn’t put you on something that would put your life in danger.”
“You said less than two minutes ago that the thing you wanted to show me was “kind of dangerous”,” I argued.
“It was supposed to make it sound cooler,” Scott frowned, “If this is too crazy and wild, I totally get it. I just thought it would be nice to get out past four walls. You mentioned you wanted to live and--”
Scott set the helmets down, “This was a stupid idea.”
“No,” Now I was starting to feel bad, “Scott, it wasn’t. It’s not.”
“You can tell me it was a stupid idea,” Scott smiled at me, “I’m not trying to guilt trip you or anything. Riding usually helps me clear my head sometimes, I thought you might enjoy it. But I can wait until my mom gets back, I’ll just borrow her car and--”
I crept my legs off the side of the bed and onto the carpeted floor. I walked over to Scott, never breaking eye contact with him, and picked up the motorcycle helmet. It was a lot heavier than I thought it would be, but I guess that was the price of protecting your most essential organ.
“We’re going, Scott. I want to go.”
Scott beamed at me, “Are you sure?”
“Positive,” I nodded, “YOLO, right?”
Scott visibly cringed, “Okay, we’ll go. But only if you never say YOLO again.”
“I can definitely agree to that.”

A Detective Without Words
There was no confidence in Cass’ own voice as she read out the words. There should have been. After all she had struggled through, after how hard they had worked in the last few days to make up for all the time they were about to lose — Cass should have found confidence in her own words. But still the tremble remained. The thoughtful pauses.
“She… sells… s…s…seeeeeshells… at the… seeeeee… sh… sh…” Cass stopped herself and took a breath, closing her eyes. She knew those letters. She could put them together. She could parse the sounds, but when put together it was so hard. So hard to— Her eyes snapped open and Cass looked reluctantly toward Helena.
The Huntress was taking notes, eyes on her clipboard rather than Cassandra. In the first few lessons that hadn’t been the case, she was very firm in watching Cassandra, encouraging her whenever necessary. And Cass used that to her advantage — reading Helena’s responses so carefully and so quickly she hardly had a stutter in reading.
Somehow Helena caught on. Cassandra hedged her bets on Barbara informing her of Cass’ abilities and how Cass could put them to creative use in order to avoid the frustratingly difficult tasks awarded to her.
It was such an annoyance to be known so well by someone so determined to parent her where Cassandra’s own parents had never even bothered before.
Resigned to the fact that she was not going to get a response from Helena until she was done with her reading, Cass took another breath and read the sentence again, out loud. But faster, to make up for the waver that existed no matter what efforts she put into subduing it.
“She sells s-seashells at the… seashore,” Cass finally read out loud.
“Very good, Cassandra,” Helena finally said, snapping her pen closed and uncrossing her legs as she looked up to meet Cass’ gaze. “You just have to keep reminding yourself, this isn’t a race. You can take your time sounding things out if you have to until you’re more confident saying them. There’s no problem with doing that.
Cass scowled. “Do… you sound it all out?”
“No, I don’t,” Helena responded flatly. “But I’m not you. I have been reading and writing for much longer, which means I have a lot of practice. It would be like—“
“Someone in self-defense wanting to train with Shiva,” Cass sighed, her eyes rolling all the way back in her head as she fell back and rocked against her chair. She had heard that particular sentiment at least a thousand times in the weeks that she had been tutored. And hearing it on the very last night that she would have with them was more aggravating than anything else.
“You might be tired of hearing it, but that doesn’t make it less true,” Helena answered. “Learning language arts isn’t a race, and that’s the bottom line. As you get better, you’ll become faster, just like anything else, but the important part isn’t that you read at a certain speed right now, it’s that you understand the content of what you’re reading. It’s just another way to communicate — with others, with ideas, with… just about anything.”
Folding her arms, Cassandra looked skeptically at Helena. “Who is she?”
Helena blinked. “Who is who?”
“She?” Cass stressed.
“She who, Cassie?” Helena pressed.
“She! She—“ Cassandra picked up the workbook she had been reading from and pointed at the sentence they had been practicing. “Who is she? Why… sell seashells? Is she important? Why do we need to know?”
For a moment, Helena looked utterly baffled. “Cass, there’s no… This isn’t about a person. It’s just a sentence that’s meant to challenge how you read.”
Throwing her hands in the air, Cass let out a growl. “You said… the important part is… understanding what it’s about! I thought—“
“It’s about learning,” Helena argued. “Sometimes when you read, yes, it gives you information you need and it might be about people or cases or anything else in the world. But the purpose of what we’re doing is that I’m teaching you so you’re learning. That’s the only thing you’re supposed to learn from the sentence.”
Annoyed and exhausted mentally, Cass threw back her head. “I’m done,” she declared for the night.
“But we’ve only gotten through…” Helena paused and began gathering her books. “Okay. You’re right. We should break. You’ve done very good lately and I know you can get discouraged when we move up reading levels. Which is fine, I promise you. I’ll just adjust the lesson plan I’m leaving for you while we’re away.”
While Cass knew she should have thanked Helena for understanding, she didn’t feel the sentiment enough to give it. She only watched her instructor quickly gather her things before glancing off toward the cockpit’s door. The massive jet had been much homier before they were making sure to buckle things down and hide things away for inevitable travel.
Rising to her feet, Cass looked back to Helena and pointed toward the door. “Oracle?” she asked.
“Barbara is in there, yeah,” Helena replied with an arched eyebrow. “You two… okay?”
“We’ll see,” Cass said before marching toward the door.
Barbara was the same as always, sitting in the navigator’s chair with her eyes locked on the screens around her. Her eyes were fierce and thoughtful — plotting. There were so many words and so many of them moving so fast on the screen that had it been anyone else, Cassandra would have not believed they were reading a single one of them.
Thoughts of how much of a liar Helena had to be to say that speed didn’t matter with reading. It was amazing how inadequate a few moments with Barbara could make Cassandra feel after even hours of drilling.
It didn’t take long for Barbara to finish up, however, and the scrolling stopped as she turned in her chair to face Cass.
“I was hoping you’d stop by before leaving. I was going to have to come to the Manor in the morning if you didn’t,” Barbara greeted her with a genuine, though tired, smile. “Probably still will.”
Cass looked at her before glancing toward the maps around Barbara’s work desk. “Not the one leaving… just everyone else.”
When she looked up, Cass could see how hard the words had hit Barbara she was looking off, chewing on the knuckles of one of her fingers. But it wasn’t going to be the kind of guilt that would make anyone change their plans. And Cass wasn’t even sure she wanted the plans to be changed.
She just needed it to hurt someone to leave her as much as it hurt her to be left, just for once.
“I didn’t know about Bruce’s plans to leave. And I definitely didn’t know he planned to leave you here,” Barbara assured her. “I don’t know what he was thinking. Or even if he was thinking. He’s so… off lately and I can’t…” She stopped herself and shook her head firmly. “No, this isn’t about Bruce.” Her eyes shot back up to Cass, holding Cass’ gaze with their intensity. “It’s about you, Cassandra. The way it should be. And… I’ve been thinking about it… You should probably come with us. You’ve never really been part of a team long term before. I know Dinah would love to have you, and it’d be easier for both you and Hel to continue your lessons if you stayed with us. It’d be good for you to see more of the world than just Gotham—“
For a moment, Cass was surprised. She had not been expecting the offer. But whatever emotion the offer should have given her was obviously not there. And without those flighty emotions, she could cut through to the meaning of the over abundance of words everyone used. Even quicker than she used to.
“If I go… Shiva would never learn,” Cass pointed out, eyes hardening on Barbara. “You would… have to take her off the team. That would break our promise.”
“Cass,” Barbara sighed, taking off her glasses and pinching the bridge of her nose.
Slowly, Cassandra blinked at Barbara. Took in the heaviness of her sigh, the weariness in her shoulders. There was disappointment there. She had wanted Cassandra to go with them, she really had.
She had also wanted the relief of not taking Shiva as her responsibility.
“It’s a promise,” Cassandra reminded her.
“Your need to make Shiva see the light is going to leave you bitterly disappointed, Cassandra,” Barbara argued, looking back up at Cass fiercely. “She isn’t half the person you are.”
“Every person is the same,” Cass argued, eyes narrowed. “She can change. Because… I changed. Okay?”
“Not everyone makes the choice to change, Cassandra, and it has to be a choice,” Barbara pleaded. “I know you believe everyone deserves a second chance. You helped me to believe that everyone deserves a second chance. But if you don’t grant people the autonomy to make that decision themselves, then when they don’t meet your expectations, it’s going to crush you more than if you had never tried. And you can’t believe that what you did — which was not your fault — could ever measure up to the conscious death and destruction which Shiva knowingly unleashes on everyone—“
Taken aback, Cass opened her mouth but found no words to match the surprise which overtook her with Barbara’s words. Not until her mentor stopped and Cass felt the one thing that always stirred itself back up from the numbness.
Rage.
“So… now promises don’t matter? Because they’re… hard?” Cass demanded angrily. “Because… people aren’t as good as you and as good as Bruce. We can forgive you… and me… but we’re exceptions.” She squeezed her eyes shut. “I’ve seen death, Barbara. It doesn’t have… exceptions. Only life changes.” She looked at Barbara at last. “That’s what… I want you and Batman to change.”
Barbara’s eyes were moving the same way they did when they read quickly on a screen, as if even her brain could write out a response without paper while Cass struggled to make letters and numbers face the right way.
“You think I’m judging you,” Barbara finally surmised. “You think Bruce is judging you, and that’s the reason we’re going away. That it’s because we’re disappointed or think you’re wrong. And that’s not the case, Cassandra. I’m not judging you. And I can’t speak for Bruce but I fully believe that his actions lately… they’re because we’re flawed, Cass. Because we make mistakes and have to be forgiven for them too. And I’m sorry that you feel like we need to learn this lesson from you — and maybe we’re right. Maybe we do. But it’s not because we’re judging you. It’s the opposite. It’s because we love you, Cassandra.”
“You love me. You just won’t keep your… promises to me,” she folded he arms and looked away.
“No, I’m keeping it,” Barbara sighed, sounding worn down and resigned more than pleased about her circumstance. “I’m keeping it. I’ll oversee Shiva becoming a better person and… and leave you here. To protect Gotham.”
Cass glanced back at her. “Good.”
There was still a frown on Barbara’s face. “Shiva doesn’t deserve the sacrifices you’re making for her, Cass. I don’t know that you can fully comprehend how different the two of you are.”
“You’re wrong,” Cass said firmly. “You… don’t know how… much we’re the same. Trust me.”
Inhaling sharply, Barbara forced a nod. “Okay.”
Cassandra ignored the way tears were welling up in Barbara’s eyes as she leaned forward and kissed her mentor’s forehead. “Okay.”
Before the signal was even lit for the first time that night, Cassandra felt the length of her patrol catching up with her.
She had known of emotional baggage and how exhausting it could be prior to the Lazarus Pit, but since her revival it seemed as though any forceful emotion that bubbled its way to the surface was equally exhausting. Emotions could make tired what bones and muscles never did for her.
Still, the moment she saw the signal in the sky, her heart pounded with the knowledge that it was for her. That it was her signal to answer and that her first opportunity to truly prove herself as Batman’s stand in had come up.
She swung through Gotham with somewhat reckless abandon, growing more eager as the familiar path to the police department opened itself up to her.
Forty feet away and swinging through the sky, Cassandra could already make out the figure of Jim Gordon standing in front of the signal, stalwart and stiff. He was making a show of standing without a cane those days and his fingers twitched at his side without a cigarette. But taking back his position as a leader in the GCPD had come with requirements he was forced to fulfill once again.
Cassandra could very much sympathize.
She landed as silently as she could on the rooftop, her grappling hook recoiling quickly before she tucked her arm under her cape and the grappling gun into her belt under its cover. She slowly rose to her feet and stood at full height in front of Jim Gordon, keeping her gaze narrowed on him and trying, desperately, to not think of him as the man who made a production of getting mashed potatoes stuck in his mustache at Barbara’s Thanksgiving dinner last year, or the kind man who continued to thank her for saving him during the No Man’s Land crisis that felt like just so many, many years ago.
Behind his glasses, Jim raised a heavy eyebrow at her and looked her over. He was expecting something, perhaps an introduction or a clarification as to why she was there instead of anyone else since they had never interacted like this without someone else to buffer before.
No Batman. No Robin. No Nightwing.
Only…
“Batgirl,” he finally broke the silence. “Thank you for coming.”
She nodded carefully. There was a word — a title she was supposed to call him by. All the others did. She knew it was important. That it… was respect and trust. He wore it the way she did her mask. But her brain still ached from all the vocabulary earlier in the night and she was tired and her brain hurt from searching for the proper word.
“Right,” he said, reaching up and fiddling with the glasses on his face. “Is… someone else…?”
“You have me… Sir,” she attempted to assure him.
“Okay,” Jim continued, mustache twitching in discomfort. Not from mashed potatoes. “We have a string of murders we have been dealing with. Our people are stumped, and since they seem fairly ritualistic we’re already negotiating with the Bureau to have some specialists look things over. Obviously, I’d still like for your own special perspective… since you work with Batman. And he usually has a larger thumb on the pulse of the Underground than anyone from the capital is going to.”
Beneath her mask, Cassandra exhaled sharply and couldn’t help but form a frown. Yes. Words. So many of them.
After an uncomfortable silence, Jim straightened his glasses again. “It’s… pretty gruesome stuff. I’m not sure if you’ve worked on something like this before… but we need to find who’s committing these murders. And we have to stop them.”
A smirk finally found its way back to Cass’ face and she punched her own palm. “No worries,” she promised him. “I’m… a detective.”
That seemed to do little to appease Jim as he reached out with a file he had been keeping in his free hand. “Right. Well. I know you aren’t really… I mean you’re kids. But you’re trained by him. So I trust…” he trailed off. “I’d still like your opinion on the case.”
Cassandra reached out and took the file, flipping it open with her thumb and glancing at a lot of the pages.
Lots of words. More on a page than even Barbara had been reading on her screens. Words longer and with more syllables than Helena had even begun to teach her. The sort of thing that, once confronted out in the wild, caused Cassandra’s insides to twist in discomfort and inadequacy. Maybe she should have stayed for the whole lesson with Helena after all.
All that out of the way, however, Cassandra buried the feelings and took a breath. She was prepared, as Batgirl, for difficult measures. She rarely worked with others in the past, and to confront such issues was not new either. She hid the file beneath her cape.
That seemed to make Jim’s eyebrows raise in alarm.
“I am on it,” she assured him, switching out the file for her grappling gun and turning to leave the rooftop.
“I… Well I figured we could go over the case together…” Gordon was continuing, a little more than confused by that point. “You seem to be doing things differently.”
“No time,” Cass half-lied, shooting off her grappling hook and leaping off the rooftop, files held close against her side.
“Those were the only printed copies. Everything else is digital. It was for me— Ah, alright then,” Gordon tried uselessly to call after her. “I suppose I was going to have to get used to using computers for everything at some point.”
The homing beacon on her newly customized Batcycle worked with the sort of efficiency that Cassandra was sure Tim only dreamed of with his Redbird. It was already pulling around the corner and into the alley she had directed it toward by the time she was landing down within.
With the motor rumbling, Cassandra glanced down to the files she had taken from Gordon. For a moment, she considered flipping through the files more intently, actually soaking in the words that she could, trying to work them out. It was enough to make her hesitate in her step before she shook her head and moving toward the back of the Batcycle.
Part of the modifications that Barbara had built into the bike for Cassandra involved a file scanner, something that was supposed to accurately digitize the letters and numbers of any papers or clues she would find. With them in the database of the Batcomputer, Cassandra would only have to go to the Cave and have the monitor read them out loud for her.
It was the best solution, she told herself constantly.
Swallowing dryly, Cass fit the file into the compartment of the Batcycyle which immediately lit up in the signature Oracle green. It brought almost as much comfort to Cassandra as it had shame, still she closed her eyes and took a breath. She was a detective. She was going to be able to do this. Alone.
She just needed to do it her way.
Just as Cassandra prepared herself to get on the Batcycle and race back to the Cave and whatever snack that Alfred had ready for her, Cassandra was pulled away from all her thoughts by a mortified, blood curdling scream only a short distance away.
Alarmed, Cass moved fast, shooting her grappling gun before her body had even turned and double pulling on the trigger to send herself jettisoning up past the building’s edge. She flew through the sky a short distance before ending her arc, right foot extended first to land in the opposite alley.
Her speed and precision were beyond compare, but the screaming had already stopped, and the woman who had unleashed the scream was already at the edge of the alley as Cass landed.
Confused, Cassandra took in the sight.
There was a husky looking man, laying in a heap on the alley’s pavement, moaning and groaning, with his face already swelling and red from a hit. A nearly perfectly delivered punch directly to the corner of his jawline, surely shattering it given the amount of pressure that it apparently had had.
When Cass looked back to the woman in the alley, it was clear even with a casual glance that the petite woman shaking and nearly vomiting had not had the training or power to deliver such a hit.
Cass could hear her motorcycle rumbling on idle just an alley away, scans no doubt completed, but for her, she knew that Batgirl had just found a second mystery to test her detective skills on.
It seemed that she was not patrolling Gotham alone…

The hammock really was a good idea
Bokuoi- 1.1k- Ao3 link
He had bought the hammock on a whim when he was at the store. It was really a good idea, Bokuto congratulated himself, as he set it up on his back porch.
“Are you sure that’s really a good idea?” Oikawa asked, from where he sat in a chair behind Bokuto, watching him work. “I feel like you’re just gonna fall out of it and hurt yourself or jump into it and break it.”
“Hey I can be careful too!” Bokuto objected, pulling tightly on the knot he had just tied. “It was definitely a good idea.”
Oikawa made a very skeptical noise.
“You’ll see!” Bokuto promised, turning around to grin at Oikawa.
Oikawa raised an eyebrow and pushed his glasses up a little on his noise. “You’re not getting me in that thing.”
Bokuto shrugged, turning back to his work. “We’ll seeeee.”
A few minutes later, he stood up and looked at his handiwork. “This looks awesome,” he declared.
“Get in it then.”
Bokuto turned around and carefully sat down on the edge of the hammock, before he could swing his legs into it, he was promptly dumped onto the ground.
Oikawa snorted. And Bokuto made a second attempt, sticking his leg in first. It was no more successful than the first.
He tried again, sitting down more in the middle and was able to get his feet off the ground before the hammock twisted out from under him.
Mayyybe the hammock wasn’t such a great idea after all.
Oikawa crouched down next to him, where he still sat on the ground, a little dazed. He kissed his cheek. “You alright?”
Bokuto sighed. “Yeah. Maybe I shouldn-”
Oikawa didn’t let him finish. “Come on don’t give up on it, get up, I’ll help you this time.”
Bokuto got up and brushed his pants off, and then sat down carefully, turning to lay down in the hammock while Oikawa helped to stabilize it. He expected Oikawa to walk away, but instead he started to climb in on top of him.
Bokuto put a foot on the ground to hold the hammock in place. “I thought you said you weren’t gonna-”
“Shush,” Oikawa replied, settling down on his stomach on Bokuto’s chest. “Do you want me to get up?”
“No, no definitely not,” Bokuto answered quickly, putting his arms around Oikawa’s back.
“Good,” Oikawa answered, laying his head down.
Bokuto hummed happily and started moving them back and forth gently using his foot on the ground. “Does that mean the hammock was a good idea then?”
“I wouldn’t go so far as to say that,” Oikawa huffed, winding his fingers into Bokuto’s shirt. Bokuto had a suspicion he wasn’t being entirely truthful.
They lay in contented silence for a while.
Bokuto glanced down at Oikawa, who lay on his chest. His eyes were closed and he was breathing slowly and softly. Oikawa had fallen asleep, arms hugging Bokuto a best he could when they were lying in a hammock, glasses falling off his face since his cheek was pressed into Bokuto’s chest. A light wind ruffled his hair.
Realizing that Oikawa had fallen asleep, Bokuto instantly stilled, watching his peaceful face with wonder. Most of the time it was Bokuto who fell asleep first and slept in late, so to see Oikawa like this was rare. He wasn’t one to let his guard down around others, ever, and Bokuto very much did not want to wake him, for fear of losing a moment of this. Oikawa had been slowly getting more comfortable around him, and Bokuto loved it. Loved him, not that he’d said so. Usually he was the person to say whatever he was thinking to someone, but the weight of telling Oikawa that held down even his loose tongue until it felt right to say it.
Since Bokuto had stopped rocking the hammock, he could feel Oikawa stirring, and resumed the rocking as smoothly as he could. He hoped to let Oikawa sleep as long as he could.
The movement seemed to help, and Oikawa settled again, tightening his arms a little. The movement made his glasses fall farther off of his face however, and Bokuto carefully slipped them off, folding them and setting them on the nearby table, which he could just reach.
He kept rocking them gently, watching Oikawa as he slept. He really was beautiful, Bokuto marveled. Hoping he could get away with it, Bokuto let his hands rest on Oikawa’s back and leaned down to press a kiss into his hair. He leaned back again and looked carefully at Oikawa’s face, but he was still relaxed and asleep as ever, and Bokuto smiled.
His hands were restless, and he started to lightly trace patterns on Oikawa’s back. Patterns became pictures, pictures became words, and before he knew it he had spelled out “I love you” several times, in invisible letters on Oikawa’s back. His hand slowed but didn’t stop. Oikawa was asleep, it wasn’t like there was any danger in it. So he kept writing, careful to be gentle so as to not bump Oikawa or wake him up.
I love you
Beautiful
I love you
Oikawa
I love you
Tooru
Amazing
I love you
I love you
I love you
I love-
He instantly stilled his hand as Oikawa moved, shifting his body so that he could tuck his chin into Bokuto’s shoulder and press his lips in a line of kisses against his jaw. “I love you too.”
Bokuto gaped in shock. “You were awake? How long?!?”
Oikawa pushed up on his elbows so that Bokuto could see his face. “Since about when you were drawing a butterfly, I think it was?”
Bokuto groaned. “Aw mannn I’m sorry I woke you up! I was trying really hard not to.”
“The tickling on my back was what woke me up, I’m afraid.” He kissed Bokuto softly before he could apologize again. “Don’t worry about it, I’m glad you did.”
Bokuto gazed up at him, a realization slowly dawning on him late. “You love me,” Bokuto whispered.
“Well of course I do,” Oikawa laughed lightly. “I got in this dumb hammock with you didn’t I?”
Bokuto felt like he might fly away with happiness. “You love me!”
“I love you.”
“And I love you!”
Oikawa kissed him.
“Woahhhhh,” Bokuto breathed, bringing his hands up to cup Oikawa’s face. The sun was getting ready to set, and Oikawa was lit in the light of it, making him look soft around the edges, otherworldly and beautiful. “Really woah.”
Oikawa kissed him again, lips moving against Bokuto’s, warm and firm.
The hammock really was a good idea, he decided.
