Rules—share the inspiration/s for the magic system in your WIP

Oh lord.

For inspiration... I'm a lifelong fantasy reader and fantasy rpg player, so it's a little hard to single out.

I can credit the Zodiac Academy books for the way my elemental magic usage has expanded, and Brandon Sanderson for his lovely rules of magic and my desire to attempt a hard magic system (at which I only partially succeeded).

There are two magic systems in the Shattered Series world (which includes Hidden Depths, my tumblr whump story)

Elemental and a separate, structured magic system.

Elemental

This is used as more of an ability inherent to each race based on which elemental god parented which species. Which I, for a long time, declined to think of as magic, but while it may be normal for each respective species... it's totally magic 😅

This is my soft magic system. There are *some* rules, but not many, and they are fairly malleable, which suits me for this particular world.

I can't really point to a specific thing that inspired the creation of this system. I think I just don't see a lot of elemental magic outside of weather magic, and I wanted to play with that. The books I mentioned above were helpful in the ways that I could have the elements used.

Elements used are: air, water, fire, earth, and aether

Magic

This was my attempted hard magic system. Users are mages, and manifest their magic somewhere between adolescence and early adulthood.

As for what's included... I kinda took a mix of things I like, healing magic, mind magic like telekinesis, protective magic, and just built a class for each thing and gave it rules. I've been told it's very reminiscent of rpg video game magic, which uh, *looks at my two vague inspiration claims above*, yeah, sounds about right lol.

Anyways, I would say it ended up as more of a medium magic system, if that's even a thing lol. There are... interpretations of the magic rules that aren't explicitly written, which I do follow, but aren't. Written. So, uh. Yeah.

Magic/Mages

Magic comes from an internal Source. A person becomes a mage by Manifesting, which is when the Source becomes available for use. The Source is akin to a pool of power/magic that matures over the course of a few years after Manifestation. Humans, Seraph and Fae can Manifest magic.

Magic is usually genetic, but can appear spontaneously or be granted by Reyanel, the god of magic. Magic is separated into classes. Classes are separated into levels, depending upon the amount of power available and achievable abilities. Higher-level abilities use more power than lower-level abilities.

A mage may choose to train or apprentice with another trained mage or may attend a school of magic. There are no more schools in the human realm.

Manifestation of Magic

Magic commonly Manifests in early adulthood, but rare cases of Manifestation in adolescence or middle age have occurred.

Manifestation causes a glowing ring to form around the iris of the eyes, which can last for up to two days. The color of the glow indicates class.

After Manifestation, a mage's eyes will glow when using their magic. The strength of the glow is dependent on how much magic is being used. A low-level ability uses very little magic, and the glow would be mostly undetectable. A high-level ability will produce a glow strong enough to light up a room.

Magical classes

Abilities within class vary depending on strength of Source. Rarely does someone have access to more than one class.

Level 1 and 2 mages are largely self-taught. A higher-level mage will need guidance to learn how to use high-level abilities effectively and safely.

Level 3 mages have Sight

There are varying strengths within each class. A mage could be classified as a weak level 2 Architect. This mage would have access to level 2 abilities, but wouldn’t have the stamina (amount of magic) available that a strong level 2 architect would have.

Mages with Sight can See a glow or aura indicating class around other mages. With more concentration and direct contact, a mage with Sight can determine a mage’s level as well.

Any level mage can channel magic to others of the same class to augment another mage’s strength, although the other mage cannot access abilities they do not normally have access to. This is easier within the same class, or between certain classes.

A mage with multiple classes will have a layered glow/aura. Each class will have separate Sources and levels.

Ex. An Empath Healer can have level 5 healing abilities with level 3 empath abilities

Healer – green aura/glow

Level 1 – affinity to plants, ability to infuse a small amount of magic into specific plants (unlike human ability growth, which has an area effect), helping them grow faster and be more effective, heals self of minor illness or wounds faster than normal

Level 2 – ability to infuse remedies with power, making them more effective (healing brews)

Level 3 – ability to See and heal minor ailments, gain magical Sight

Level 4 – ability to heal self of moderate illness or wounds, ability to heal more complex wounds or illness of others

Level 5 – ability to heal major wounds/illness, even fatal ones if caught quickly, ability to harm others with healing magic

*Healers have innate desire to practice their craft, can sense when someone in their proximity needs healing

*self-healing can occur without the healer actively directing it or with active direction if trained.

Empath – yellow aura/glow

Level 1 – ability to sense surface emotions of others

Level 2 – ability to sense deeper emotions of others with physical contact

Level 3 – ability to transmit/affect emotions of a small number of people, ability to sense deeper emotions without physical contact, gain magical Sight

Level 4 – ability to distinguish truth from lie, ability to transmit emotions/affect emotions is stronger and can affect more people

Level 5 – ability to see memories and heal emotional trauma, ability of compulsion

*Empaths abilities often activate (link to the Source) without conscious effort. High emotions in an empath activate a link to the Source automatically. Empaths especially need extra training to control this response.

*Even without accessing their Source, Empaths are more sensitive to the emotions of those around them.

*Level 5 empaths feel compelled to work in a healing capacity, similar to the Healer compulsion to heal.

Architect – orange aura/glow

Level 1 – ability to infuse normal items with magic, making them stronger

Level 2 – ability to manifest small items from magic, like cups, utensils, bricks

Level 3 – ability to manifest larger items from magic, like pipes, clothing. Ability to infuse items with magic (normal items or magical items) to give them a specific function, ex. Globes that glow with light, a series of pipes that run hot or cold water, items that can retain heat or cold, communication items. Gain magical Sight

Level 4 – ability to manifest larger items from magic, like furniture

Level 5 – ability to manifest larger items from magic, like buildings or bridges

*Items manifested magically are stronger and shimmer

Artificer – red aura/glow

Level 1 – ability to create reservoirs for magic, ability to channel Level 1 abilities into an artifact

Level 2 – ability to channel Level 2 abilities into an artifact

Level 3 – ability to channel Level 3 abilities into an artifact, gain magical Sight

Level 4 – ability to channel Level 4 abilities into an artifact

Level 5 – ability to channel Level 5 abilities into an artifact

*Artifacts are magically created by the Artificer, can take any shape or size, and can be used by anyone

*Reservoirs can be filled with energy from a mage’s Source to be used for later. The higher the level of Artificer, the stronger the reservoir.

*Architects' magic cannot be channeled into an artifact

Kinetic – purple aura/glow

Level 1 – ability to levitate small objects with magic

Level 2 – ability to teleport small objects with magic

Level 3 – ability to levitate larger items or people with magic, gain magical Sight

Level 4 – ability to teleport larger items with magic

Level 5 – ability to teleport self, distance related to strength of Source

*Levitation of items related to Source strength, the higher the level the heavier the object the mage is able to lift, the higher the level the longer the mage can lift something (depending on weight)

*Teleportation distance of objects related to Source strength, the higher the level, the farther the mage is able to teleport the item.

*A Kinetic cannot teleport live cargo. A Kinetic cannot teleport other people or animals. However, an Artificer can make an artifact with Kinetic power that can teleport live cargo.

Guardian – blue aura/glow

Level 1 – ability to increase strength and endurance

Level 2 – ability to heighten natural senses, sight, hearing, etc.

Level 3 – ability to increase natural healing speed, gain magical Sight

Level 4 – ability to create a magical shield to protect self/small group from harm

Level 5 – ability to create a larger magical shield to protect self and/or others from harm

*Guardians have a strong sense of right and wrong. They have a natural inclination to protect and can sense when protection is needed.

Magical Replenishment or Suppression

Replenishment – Time will replenish, although less time is needed if the mage is well fed/well rested. Exposure to a race’s natural element will speed replenishment (humans-earth, seraph-air/wind, fae-magic). Can also use shibella, an herb ground then mixed in any liquid for replenishment. No specific taste but does cause a tingling sensation on the tongue.

Suppression of aura – Something to suppress aura/eyes lighting up but still able to use abilities. Orbenith, a mushroom found in underground cave regions, ground into a powder and mixed in liquid or chewed whole. Side effects include nausea, brain fog, mood swings, some users may experience some difficulty using abilities. Side effects decrease with repeated use.

Suppression of abilities – Something to suppress abilities altogether. Canthite, a mineral recently discovered in the mountains of southern Elysia. Can be used in a variety of ways.

Permanent suppression of abilities – appeal to Reyanel, god of magic, to pass judgement upon misuse.

Cost of using magic

Using too much power (all at once or over a long period of time) causes fatigue, headaches, nausea, fainting

Using all the magic in the Source leaves the mage drained. Trained mages will stop using magic right before this happens, as draining the Source can cause extreme weakness and can sometimes lead to extended periods of unconsciousness.

Mages can train to continue functioning after draining their Source, but only the Guardian class have been very effective at managing it.

Writeblr for newbies

So you joined Tumblr to talk about your writing. Maybe you're published and you want to promote your works, or maybe you're wanting a supportive community of fellow writers, or maybe you're just writing for the hell of it and want to show the world your blorbos.

Being a part of the writing side of Tumblr is a little bit like being in kindergarten and all the kids are talking about their imaginary friends to each other. Except some of the kids have published stories about their imaginary friends in real books you can buy. It's so cool.

I have made some wonderful friends on Writeblr, I've ARC'd and beta'd books for people, and I've gotten a lot of warm fuzzies from sharing my snippets and my characters. It's somewhere between self-promo and group therapy, but it doesn't feel like either. It feels like a wonderful community of writers supporting each other.

The Writeblr lingo can seem a little intense at first so I thought I'd set up a guide. If I've missed anything lmk!

WIP - stands for 'work in progress' (plural: WIPs). Any piece of writing (or poetry, or any kind of art) that isn't completed yet. This might be the first draft of a story, or the nth draft of your novel, or the not-yet-posted chapter of the fanfiction you're writing. WIP is a state of mind: it might be nearly complete, or it might just be an idea with a few hundred words attached to it. Talk about it as much or as little as you want.

WIP intro - a totally optional (and honestly a lot of hard work sometimes lol) post explaining the main themes/background/plot/characters of your WIP. Something you can link people to so they good a good idea of your WIP and what it's about. Similarly, character intro, for individual characters within a WIP, often with art/picrews.

Tag game - the lifeblood of Writeblr! In its most basic form, someone tags you in a game, you play the game, then tag other people you want to play the game. Lots of people do 'open tags', which you can also pick up. These games can range from making picrews of your characters to posting a snippet or multiple snippets. A few common ones at the moment (these change often!) are: Find the Word (the tagger gives you words to find in your WIP, you post a short snippet for each word, then give the people you tag new words to find); Last Line (you post the last line(ish) you wrote, or wrote recently); 9 Lines 9 People (post 9(ish) recent lines, tag 9(ish) people). There are so many more, and new ones being created all the time.

Blorbo - your OC (original character) that lives in your mind rent-free. The one(s) you would commit war crimes for. You know the one I'm talking about. In addition, blorbo trading and sharing is encouraged in the Writeblr community.

Ask game - a post that you reblog, usually containing a list of prompts or questions, that encourages your followers to ask those questions in your ask box. It is friendly to drop an ask from the game to the person you reblogged the post from.

Weekly asks - if you've asked to take part, questions about your writing in your inbox, related to a certain day of the week. There's Worldbuilding Wednesday (WBW), which are questions about worldbuilding, Blorbo Blursday (OC questions), and Storyteller Saturday (STS), questions about writing in general. These questions can be very generic and vague, or can be about specific characters/stories.

Pinned Post - basically, an 'about' page. Talk about yourself, your WIPs, the kinds of things you like, whether you want to be involved in Writeblr games, whether your asks are open. You don't need one, but it can be a handy reference point for your followers.

Taglist - sometimes, Tumblr posts get lost on the dash. If you are interested in a particular WIP, ask the author if you can be put on their taglist, so you can get notified every time they post about it. They will love you for it, seriously!

Overall, on Writeblr, it is always encouraged:

to talk about your stories and characters as much as you like. People might not follow along at first, but they'll get on board!

to reblog others' writing/snippets/promo. We're all relying on each other for our sanity here, and a nice comment in the tags never goes amiss either!

{Nopal's 2023 Writing Round Up}

I will start by saying that 2023 was a pivotal writing year for me because it marked the start of sharing my writing online and starting this blog! With all of that came of course, the formation of my own little community 🥺 I've made so many lovely friends along the way, fallen in love with their characters and stories, and I just feel so privileged and honored to experience the worlds they've created. I'm so glad I took the plunge and met all of you, even if it was really scary at first! Thank you all for being so welcoming, kind, supportive, and for making space in your hearts and days for my silly little characters and their stories 💙 That said, lets take a look at some of my writing highlights from this past year! Throwing this under a cut because it got long (of course it did lol)

160,512 (as of 12/27)

This excludes tumblr posts, miscellaneous notes, and outlines. It includes WIP work (AASOAF 3, M.O.W), WIP adjacent work (AASOAF 2 companion/release material and side stories like Chanterelles), and miscellaneous prose pieces (Pare, Fetch, and Bowl of Brown). I don't have much to observe here other than holy shit that's a lot LOL.

This chapter is the first battle sequence of AASOAF 3 so it makes sense for it to be the longest so far! This category's runner up is the Part I finale of M.O.W, Halcyon, at 6663 words.

This chapter is a little go between chapter with a tiny bit of whump in the mix. It might get longer after I get to editing it, we'll see! For this one I excluded the prologues of both AASOAF 3 and M.O.W because it kind of felt like cheating otherwise. Both are <300 words.

I limited my choices to snippets I'd posted since it felt weird to make a new post and be like that one! I like that one! lol Appropriate content warnings have been listed on that post as, unsurprisingly, it contains body horror who could have guessed lol. The runner up in this category are the cryptic little monologues I wrote leading up to Tierra Madre (linking to the AASOAF 3 masterpost for ease if you want to check out all four pieces!). These link up the overarching story the prologues of each book are telling and hints at how they come into play in AASOAF 3.

Now I know this wasn't all done in this year but it felt right to put in here since I'm getting closer and closer to finishing the canon telling of AASOAF with each day that passes so I can't help but look back to where it all started. These word counts include words in each version of the WIP and the dead darlings of each while excluding Fay's discovery writing (120k+), side stories, WIP adjacent work, spin-offs, and oneshots. I'm really not sure if canon AASOAF will surpass original telling but that's because the story back then was a lot of Fay and Wilkes origin story work and the tale of their romance which isn't explored in canon and also includes Mariel and Axtapor's stories. Two reasons for this, Fay and Wilkes getting together all happens before canon begins and because canon focuses primarily on Mariel and Axtapor's romance. In any case, those are some FAT numbers holy mama. Putting this post together was actually the first time I saw them side by side like that.

Intro Post

(Every few days I remember something I forgot or have new links to add lol it's constantly changing a little bit)

So I go by Lyra (or Library lol) and I use she/her pronouns. That's all I can think of to put here lol.

I'm a reader and a writer. I love romantic fantasy in both, but I'll read almost anything. Not really into horror, but I've dabbled in most other genres when it comes to reading, all the way to non-fiction. I'm always accepting new recs even though I have a ridiculous tbr and wishlist lol.

Always happy to talk about books with anyone, but be wary of that once you get me started I won't ever stop annoying you about it lol.

The Grishaverse books [my favorite is either Crooked Kingdom or Rule of Wolves]

Once Upon a Broken Heart series (as of Oct 15. I'm hyperfixating on this one, so you're getting a lot of fandom content for them)

I have ADHD (if you couldn't tell from my overuse of parenthesis and brackets [every thought comes with a bonus thought and sometimes an extra bonus thought like this!]). I'm a Christian with more progressive theology, but this blog is a safe place for everyone as long as we're all loving to each other and respect each other's beliefs and identities (and I love having good faith dialogue [not debates!! 0 interest in theological debates.], I love hearing other perspectives and getting to talk about it, so feel free to dm me about that, too). I'm an ISFJ and a 9w1, and I don't know that much about it yet but I love typology. I also love video games, mostly Stardew Valley and the sims right now (thinking about making a secondary blog for that).

I post fandom stuff and writing things for my wips. You'll probably get lots of stuff for my wip Idk, Dragons ocs once NaNo starts. And just random stuff for whatever I'm hyperfixating on in the moment lol. I'm totally open to asks about anything involving my wips or fandom-related asks. I participate in Storyteller Saturday and Worldbuilding Wednesday every week, and feel free to ask for any of the other events, too. Tag games are also cool!

I Don't Know, Dragons [this is a placeholder title, but I might just keep it lol]: this post isn't exactly a blurb, but it's everything I know so far that I can share without spoiling. (I actually need to update it and make a real post for it soon lol. The main development is that Elara's love interest is a werewolf boy.) This one is still in the planning stage so everything is heavily subject to change. I'll be doing it as my NaNo project this year, so it's posted about a lot right now. New Cynthia post here.

Wow uh i have followers now apparently. Hi, sorry my blog still has no original content I'm still getting things set up for my wip intros. In the meantime, have this blurb from one of my wips, Heirs of Starlight.

A voice calls out to her, pulling her out of her thoughts. “Something’s bothering you.”

She looks up to see her brother looking at her with a half-smile. He leans closer to her direction as much as he can from across the table, light gray eyes shining underneath the warm lighting. His hands are outstretched in her direction, his fingers linked as he lets out a hum. His smile falters a bit, “So, what is it?”

Valeria tilts her head to the side, her eyebrows furrowed. A slight frown tugs at her lips as she flicks her gaze to the table for a moment before turning back to Arden, “... You didn’t notice?”

“Notice what?” Arden asks, his frown mimicking hers. He lets out a tuneless hum, tapping his fingers against the table, “I didn’t notice anything out of place if that’s what you’re asking.”

Valeria casts a doubtful look at him. He seemed like he noticed something about the servant too, but decided not to think about it too much. That’s what it looks like to her, but she wants to make sure. The servant acted suspicious, so it wouldn’t surprise her if something was happening with her. She had no reason to suspect her with the lack of evidence, but it’s difficult not to notice something that might be a threat in the future.

“Seriously, I didn’t notice anything. I mean that one girl was acting kind of odd, but I couldn’t really read her, so I thought it wasn’t a big deal,” Arden says as silence builds up inside the room. He leans even closer to Valeria, though the wide table doesn’t quite allow him to, “You notice anything about her other than that?”

So he noticed, after all. She tucks in a stray lock of dark auburn hair, flicking her gaze to the carved wooden archway leading to the dining room. “... I’m quite certain that her hands were shaking. I know I might be overthinking this, but we should keep that in mind in case something happens that might involve her.”

“... Yeah, you’re kind of overthinking this,” Arden says, letting out a short laugh. His expression falls when Valeria looks at him pointedly. He scratches the back of his neck, clearing his throat, “In all seriousness though, I trust you. If that’s what you think, then I’ll keep an eye out.”

Valeria nods in gratitude, giving a faint smile. “I appreciate it. Thank you.”

“Yeah, sure,” Arden says, waving a hand dismissively, looking out through one of the large windows leading through the garden, then turns back to Valeria. He rises from his seat, giving her a small smile, “I think I’m going to turn in for the night. Are you?”

“You’re not sneaking out tonight?” Valeria asks, raising an eyebrow.

Arden grimaces, shaking his head, making his black curls bounce on top of his head. “The whole discussion during dinner was so stressful to listen to, I feel like my brain is going to melt. I think I’m just gonna go to bed tonight.”

“Hm. Should I expect your pointless late-night visits?”

“They’re not pointless if you’re enjoying the time spent, right?” Arden grins. He rises from his seat and walks over to Valeria, patting her shoulders lightly, his voice dropping its teasing tone. “Seriously though, I won’t bother you tonight if I can help it.”

Valeria shakes her head, rolling her eyes and letting out an amused sigh. “That simply means that you’ll bother me if you can’t fall asleep.”

“Exactly,” Arden replies with a mischievous smirk. He stifles a yawn, covering his mouth with a hand, “... I’m gonna get going now. I’ll see you in the morning. Goodnight, Val.”

“Good night.”

I considered dumping the self-indulgent stuff, but I think that would be a bit much for my first real post lol. Hope you enjoyed it ^^ constructive criticism is welcome!

I don’t really have any sort of masterpost, most of what I post about these guys is in the form of snippets and rambles and usually people just jump on board wherever..... which, yeah, can be confusing and difficult for folks to keep up with especially if they’re new HAHAHA

the main four I speak about on this blog are Noa, Tris, Shara and Kai from ATDAO, n I have these handy character intros on hand for this exact purpose!! here u go (I mean here’s the link to the old post but it’s still got the wrong name for Tris so eh)

n honestly knowing these four is like 90% of the work tbh, I am a simple man, I post content about the same four OCs 24/7 until everyone is sick of it,,

Tris and Noa are the protagonists and viewpoint characters! 

Tris’s plotline involves him trying to figure out what happened to his older brother Jacob, who got hit by a car and straight-up vanished from existence entirely, and involves a quest into an unreality that can be described as “getting lost down the back of an interdimensional sofa”. also there’s a sword and a cat. think fantasy/adventure vibes that veer into horror

Noa’s plotline involves her work at the Department of Interdimensional Instabilities! and her becoming tangled up with otherworldly energies and gaining some strange powers, as well as her clash with basically-a-cartoon-supervillain Laurence Marrick Thiele, whose full name I like to type out and who’s attempting to manipulate interdimensional doorways for his own gain and putting a hell of a lot of people’s lives in peril. think mystery/sci-fi vibes!

Shara and Kai aren’t viewpoint characters but they’re still up there as MCs and I love them! Shara’s story centres around her attempting to solve three mysteries from her childhood which she believes will lead her to the source of the apocalypse, and Kai’s story involves them dealing with the emotional and interpersonal repercussions of losing seven years of their life to a time loop and their attempts to reconnect with their family, who thought they were dead

annnnnnnnd that’s basically all the nice neat concise stuff I can give ya! 

under the cut will be some additional rambles you don’t really need to read, I’m not so good at coming up with Nice Neat Character Summaries on the fly, so it’s just me scrambling about to find vaguely relevant posts and links..... it will unfortunately be a bit of a mess and perhaps only tangentially relevant

Tell me what inspired you to write about pirates?

So I was playing a game (DOS II, if anyone is curious!) that had a community-made mod classes pack that I chose to try out after completing the vanilla version of the game. One of those was a Pirate class! I made my character (version 1 of Fay) and I got really attached to her throughout the playthrough. I wasn't ready to let her go after I finished the game so I started thinking about what adventures she might go on, who she was as a person, etc, and before I knew it, I was writing about pirates!

What is your WIP about?

So my current WIP is the final installment of the As A Stranger Or A Friend? trilogy, Children Of The Broken Star (referenced as AASOAF 3 around the old blog!).

In a nutshell, the story takes place in the late-Medieval-ish but make it Golden Age of Piracy fictional world of Oepus and follows the unlikely and star-crossed romance between the human woman, Mariel, and the Lizardfolk pirate, Axtapor. Which is fine except...Oepus itself is perilous, chock-full of nuance, and admittedly difficult for them to navigate for Reasons ™. All I can say is that the world really doesn't want them together but fate REALLY does. And since this is the last book in the series the stakes are pretty high and much bigger than Mariel and Axtapor's relationship.

In it you'll find my interpretations of traditional fantasy races, cultures and all, so look out Lizardfolk (by far my faves), Elves, Dwarves, Faefolk, Dragons, and my homebrew Dragon/Faefolk cross, Akuji. And Humans of course but they're not as interesting lol. Magic is of course involved and there are supernatural beings and creatures galore!

Master wip Intro Post (I’m so sorry lol)

I mentioned in my last post that I had notes for upwards of 15 projects in a ton of different formats (side note to myself:whyyyy). Ergo, I thought it would be helpful to do a short overview of all of them, as I’ll probably be doing update posts for all of these at some point.

Also: Thank you for 6 followers already??? I honestly didn’t think anyone would see my last post (especially as I had no idea how tags worked until after I posted it).

Novels

GRACE

“After the sudden death of her childhood best friend and crush Vicky, Robin is invited to spend the summer with her estranged father, his new husband, and her half-sister at their Maine cabin. As her relationships with her father’s family and a fellow vacationing teen Claire grow, her relationships with her remaining friends and mother back home begin to fracture.”  

Oh boy does this book have a backstory.It’s a little complicated to get into right now (I’ll talk about it in my post for this wip), but I got the idea for the original version of this book in April 2016, and it’s been through three major overhauls since then. I’ve done enough planning to start drafting the newest version, but I’m waiting to get a few mostly-complete projects done before I jump in. 

Attic (working title)

“The discovery of a dead body in the attic of Theo’s new house puts a damper on his fresh start. When a singular death becomes a series, Theo and his new friends decide to investigate and discover that the explanation isn’t able to be explained.”

This story also has a long history. I wrote this for NaNoWriMo 2017, overhauled it for NaNoWriMo 2019, and overhauled it again in the middle of that month. I’m currently stuck with a certain aspect, so I’ve put it to the side for the moment.  

Pinewood Guild

“A group of scholarship students at an elite private boarding school obsess over the seemingly unexplainable death of a fellow student.”

This is very much a baby idea, from April of this year. I was having a grand old time writing a different project Three Can Keep a Secret (which I’ll get to later), and I wanted to write another book about terrible people being horrible to each other. I don’t have very many plans for this book at the moment. 

Blood in the Water

“Paul returns to his hometown for the first time since high school to attend the funeral of his brother when he starts to receive anonymous letters. What starts as innocent and quirky quickly turns dark and potentially deadly”

I got this idea in February of this year, as I wanted to write a novel with the letter format. I was supposed to start this project as my “I’m Leaving Highschool Emotional Support Book”, but I’m not sure if I’m going to actually do that.

The Lion Tattoo

“Jordan bonds with classmate Cade over their shared foster care status. As Jordan starts to spend more and more time with Cade, they see a darker side to the boy. When one of Cade’s adventures ends with them sent off to different foster homes, Jordan must turn their life around.”

This is a very old idea that I honestly forgot about. However, there’s still a lot I want to explore with this story, so I’ll probably get to it someday.  

Anthologies

Sunny

“August ‘Sunny’ finally gets engaged to her long-time girlfriend Tatsu, sending her back to the beginnings of their relationship as camp counselors.”

This is a short set of vignettes I wrote as a birthday present to a friend. As it was just for shiggles, it’s not my most sophisticated story, but I’m okay with it. You can actually read this on my Wattpad if you’d like (I’ll add a link here when I figure out how to do that). I also adapted it as a short film because I was bored, if I’m being honest. 

Hypocrite

This is my poetry collection! Some of these poems are based on real life experiences (for example, the poem I named the collection after was based on a friendship that exploded), and others are completely fiction. This might just be my favorite project I’m working on, if I’m being honest. 

Short Story Collection

I can’t title this wip for the life of me, so the name is relatively self explanatory. I’ve written four stories for this so far, and I have three brewing in the notes app.

Safety Orange

“When an accident kills her father and sends her mother into a coma, Angie and her brother Oliver are sent to live with their Aunt Marie. Romance should be the last thing on her mind when a local barista Natalie catches her eye.”

This was my “Quarantine Emotional Support Book”. I had two simultaneous itches--to write something cute and fluffy, and to try out prose poetry. These two ideas birthed this story. I want to get a printed copy for me and my mom, but I don’t have any plans for it after that. 

Three Can Keep a Secret

 “Hattie, her girlfriend Regan, and her best friend Vincent return from a weekend camping trip to discover their town has been ravaged by the undead. Sophie and her brother Joseph are driven from the military’s safety by a tragic accident. Aspen discovers something wrong with her younger sister Paris that might prove more difficult to handle than the walking bodies around every corner.”

This was my other “Quarantine Emotional Support Book”, written for Camp NaNo 2020. It’s technically a short story collection, although I structured the stories with chapters. I also enjoyed the little flash pieces that appeared in-between each story. Like Safety Orange, I want to get a printed copy of this book, but I don’t think I’ll seek publication for it.

Horror Web Series

“Outcast sisters Heaven and Eden make a new friend--one that gives them special abilities. While Eden is more timid about her powers, Heaven is almost too excited and drags her sister along on her quest for revenge.”

This is another one of my projects that I just Cannot Title.The description makes it sound kind of lighthearted, but it’s one of the darkest ideas that I’ve come up with. Right now it’s outlined on my phone, and really all I need to do is dedicate a day to pounding it out. 

Video Games

I’m Sorry This Happened

“Archer’s attempts to cheer up her girlfriend Helena accidentally awakens Sylvia, a playfully violent ghost who convinces the girls to get revenge on the two boys that caused her death almost half a century ago.”

This is a visual novel my sister and I are teaming up with to create. We’re still not sure whether we’re going to publish it, but nevertheless I’m having a grand old time writing it, and I guess that’s what really matters. 

Swanhill Convenience 

“A misfit crew of the local gas station convenience store have a strong customer base. When new employee Pearl becomes suspicious of the group, the whole town’s careful facade crumbles.”

This one needs...more time to brew. There’s a lot of basic details that I’m having trouble making solid decisions on (for example, whether the store is a coffee shop or a convenience store), so this will probably have to sit until I have an epiphany or something.

“You should not have gone into the forest. Now escape, however you can.”

I debated whether to put this on the list because it’s so hard to talk about without ruining the whole thing. It’s a puzzle solving game that I think has some really interesting lore that I can incorporate. I think that’s literally all I can say lol.
