Clash of the Cubes - Challenge THREE
Tumblr media
While the elevator goes up, the TV switched back on again. Pulse is in the TV, sat on a seat that vaguely looks like a tree.
“Welcome back, viewers and competitors, to the Clash of the Cubes! You lot are nearing the elevator’s destination, hopefully you haven’t gotten sick by then.”
“Anywho, your next challenge will begin shortly, depending on when the elevators sto-“
The elevators suddenly stop with a loud *CLANG*. They open up to show a river infront of them with chopped-down trees floating near the shore.
“There we go. So your next challenge is a boat race! Unfortunately we haven’t found any boats, so I have the next best thing! Trees!”
“It’s as simple as it sounds. First cube on the end wins. Pushing, shoving, horseplay, ramming & hitting are encouraged. You MAY encounter some obstacles, so better dodge em~. Won’t say how the extra points are achieved, so figure that out bt yourself.”
“Oh, and by the way, to spice things up, I’m giving some extra items for use to each of you based on your placement! Use them wisely.”
The flower-like shapes in military outfits appear again, and hand each Cube a box. Inside the box is...
(ps: your item is on your placement, so if you’re first you get the first item listed, for second you get the second, and so on)
A tissue that just says “Goodluck loser”.
Air.
A stick.
A sandwich that has your name on it. It looks punched.
Flippers.
A life jacket.
A card that says what the secret point criteria is. (Will say in DMs)
An actual boat (and by boat i mean a bowl with no oars or motors).
A rocket boost.
A slingshot.
A Blixer Blaster. (Basically a portable O=[] cannon blixer)
A shield that deflects literally anything back to where it came.
(EXTRA STUFF YOU NEED TO KNOW:)
(around halfway through the course, you’re gonna get shit like buzzsaws, swords, axes, spikes, etc. thrown at you by Nulls from the sidelines, so you better dodge lol)
(Oh and due to the nature of this being a race, some of yall might end up drawing other cubes getting passed by (or run over) so heres a drive with ref sheets)
“Good? Good. Now get on your trees…”
The cubes get on the trees. Some grab on, others sit down on it, etc. (how it’s like is up to you btw)
“And be on your marks…. Get set… Go!”
Pulse fires a gun in the sky, and a current in the river starts pushing the trees to the finish line.

Colored Gaze: Zachary Sallows Analysis
Tumblr media
Me after writing all of this SHWJFJWKRNJS
Mhm yeah its time for the british bastard to get anaylzed and theorized-
Not much has been said about Zachary's childhood except that he got his photography hobby from his dad and that he was raised to be a gentleman. I've mentioned this before but I think they may have mentally affected him alot and made him hold himself to high standards which feeds into his depression that has been confirmed that he has, all that going along with that Zachary hasn't felt love for anybody until meeting MC.
Along with having years of repressed sexual desire which is probably why he's such a slut.
I also think that maybe MC being the only person he's felt love for is why he's so damn possessive over them. He finally met somebody that he feels something for so you bet your ass he's not going to let them go and show them all the love he can.[Even if he does it in a fucked way]
And Zachary is definitely more of a traditional yandere and I think its possible that Zachary would even break MCs legs to keep them with him. And of course I'm not saying this just because he's seems like the type but there was a post where it was very subtly hinted at.
Tumblr media
Take note of the "To him, its too early for that yet." Might be looking to far into it but thats what I'm getting from that.
Speaking of Zachary hurting MC one of the most surprising things is that Zach might be on some levels "the safest one" because he's the only one I can't see killing MC. I know alot of people give Seth the title of the safest but comrades- Lets not forget how this mf acts when he's mad. But alas even if Zachary wouldn't kill MC I definitely see him mind breaking MC if it comes to that point. After all it has been said that if things don't go his way then he'll bend it until it does.
There's also other evidence for that considering his favorite flower is a rose because roses still look beautiful even when they wilt. Now wouldn't somebody that your obsessed with still look beautiful even if their broken? :)
Also if anybody thinks that Zachary is safe because of his overprotectiveness, keep in mind that it's been confirmed that the reason Zachary wants to protect them is because it feeds his ego. 🙂 [Also once again could be something else of his depression since it makes him feel good about himself].
I would also like to mention one of my past theories for this next part,So yall remember my "Simon is a cannibal" theory? [That was debunked btw keep in mind] Well I noticed that in the devs response to it they said something among the lines of "When is my Zachary going to get a theory like this" and at the time I pushed it aside because I couldn't link it to any of the other clues I had about Zachary.
Tumblr media
[Credit to Colored Gaze on Twitter]
But it immediately clicked for me with that one art on Twitter of Zachary cooking- So does anybody else remember how its been mentioned that Zachary has other "hobbies" but its always been very vague about what they are? Well I think I had a correct theory just wrong LI-
Because with Simon it was just Entity being a lil goofy that made me think he was a cannibal but for Zachary now there's actual evidence(?) That HE is a cannibal.
It makes me wonder why though he may be a cannibal and I've come to two possible answers even though I got to admit, their somewhat of a stretch.
So it could very possibly be that since he's uninstalling people left and right for MC that it might be his way of hiding the bodies. But then again its very possible that Zachary could have been killing before meeting MC to for this "hobby".
Or (and this one is a major strech), looking at all the other things he's into he could possibly have a thing for anatomy but I won't put much since I don't really have that much proof for it.
Also let me take you back to Zachary's ref sheet for a moment. You remember that "Has a unique sense of beauty" part? What if his unique sense of beauty is actually just what he wants. What he visuals. Of course he cares about what MC wants and their opinions but he still wants the future that he visualizes and he's going to do anything to get that.
But honestly, Zachary's not all that bad as some of us make him out to be. Yes even though he can get mad easily he won't show it to MC or take it out on them [Maybe in woo-hoo but thats not my point] and he's just a romantic guy that will take you to dinner and give you roses [andkidnapyou] and don't quote me on this but Zach actually looks very cuddable.
I already have a lot of theory/analysis on this post so I think I'll stop here for now until we get more info in Zachary. And thank you for reading my rant about this possessive bastard and have a nice day <3

Papyrus is Probably a Better Boyfriend than Sans (Part 5: Miscellaneous)
←Previous (Part 5 of 5) Next (Bonus) → (See Introduction for research caveats.)
(Though this post is "safe for work", outbound links allude to human reproduction in a vague, non-graphic way.)
Analyzing all known factors of attraction relevant to a romantic relationship would be far too time-consuming. As such, the sample below has just the ones easiest to research, most-replicated, or just the ones the author happened to find while researching previous parts.
Voice
Tumblr media
A study on attraction mentions that women prefer men with a relatively deep voice. Though it's common in Undertale comic or game dubs to give Papyrus a Skeletor-esque voice fairly high-pitched for a man, his "canon" voice is actually a weird chattering noise. (a form of voice grunting) Thus, it's hard to tell what his voice should sound like.1 Sans' voice, being a low-pitched chuckle, might actually be deeper than Papyrus's.
Playing Good Music
Tumblr media
Test subjects in a study evaluated potential romantic partners (short-term, long-term, and...other) based on photographs. These photographs were paired with improvised musical snippets of various skill levels.2 The research found that a potential partner is generally considered more attractive if the photograph is paired with higher-quality improvised music. The tendency is especially strong for women seeking long-term relationships.
While Sans knows how to play a trombone (despite his lack of lips and logical lack of lungs) it's unclear whether he plays it all that well. He only plays it once in-game, and then for only two seconds. Papyrus's line “stop plaguing my life with incidental music!” may suggest he's done this multiple times before. There's no evidence Papyrus knows how to play an instrument.
Scent
Tumblr media
If flirted with, Papyrus dabs various MTT-brand cosmetic products behind his (nonexistent) ear. These products, or at least he “bone cologne”, are likely scented.3
In one study, women viewed videos of men pretending to introduce themselves to an attractive woman. Half the men in the videos wore fragrance, and half did not. The women visually judged the men that wore fragrance as more attractive, even though they couldn't smell the fragrance. It was found that the men that wore fragrance felt more confident than the unscented men. Thus, feelings of self-confidence from using scented products (e.g., cologne) may change the user's behavior in a way the increases attractiveness to others, even if those that judge them can’t smell them.
Red (Specifically, Papyrus’s Scarf)
The color red is commonly associated with amorousness and dominance. It may seem intuitive that men who wear red would be perceived as more attractive than those who don't, but evidence has yet to bear this out.
Expressiveness
Tumblr media
Papyrus talk sprite sample, from The Spriters' Resource
People are more attracted to those whose emotions or emotional expression they can easily, confidently understand, according to the results of a study. The more better participants thought they could understand someone's emotions, the more rewarding the interaction was, and the more they felt attracted to the person.
Relative to Papyrus, Sans is inexpressive. His subtle expressions are conveyed mainly through his eyes, with his mouth apparently frozen into a smile at all times.4 Those who can't read Sans' emotions with confidence would likely feel less attraction to him than for Papyrus.5 Adding to this, Sans' constant smile may be interpreted as unnerving or irritating in situations where smiling isn't appropriate. (see Humor section)
Apparently, the optimal male voice frequency is ~96 Hertz. Comparing the frequency of the chattering noises for Sans and Papyrus could provide guidelines on how to accurately re-create them as real voices. ↩︎
Notably, one of the three instruments used in the samples was an alto saxophone. That's fairly close to a trombone, which Sans plays. ↩︎
These scented products may very explain one of Papyrus's calls: "PAPYRUS, HE SMELLS LIKE THE MOON." (One should assume claiming a cologne smells like the moon is a marketing gimmick; there's no way monsters would know what moon dust smells like) ↩︎
With the exception of a brief moment when he is hit in the Genocide Route, where it's more of a grimace for two seconds. ↩︎
Note that many artists draw Sans' mouth as much more expressive than in-game, to the point of giving him open-mouthed expressions when he has never opened his mouth in the game. ↩︎

Tumblr media Tumblr media
Happy birthday to me. /o/ And that’s the first and last time I mention it in this post. I don’t care and you shouldn’t either—I just want cake.
FubuGabu is back! Not by popular demand because, well, no one has asked for it, although the feedback I got was lovely. But, hey, I had this material ready, so might as well do something with it, lame as it might be.
These are some early and not-so-early doodles of FubuGabu. The latter was pretty much the base of the final design, but the former… that’s from 2014 or something wild like that. I actually had many more doodles and concepts, but I hated them all so much that I erased most of them. I’m surprised I could save that one. I might have kept it because it was a full lineart, I guess. In any case, I’m glad I could find that much.
Since it’s fitting to do, let’s talk about FubuGabu’s design today! There’s a lot to talk about, but my memory is awful, so I’m sure I’ll forget about some things. I hope it won’t betray me too much.
Anyway, as usual, more under the cut.
Well, well, well. Ain’t this boy one little shit. Fudou gave me nightmares. Kidou is still giving me nightmares (to the point where I’m considering changing the idea I’ve had for around a year now). Someoka was awful to draw and make sense of. Max’s tail was awful to work with. But Fubuki? Fubuki is on a whole different level.
Let’s start by talking about the final design, since that’s the better one. Not even good, just better. That’s an epic victory as it is, so who cares.
FubuGabu’s design, as the reference sheet and my last post states, is not based on Gabumon, but on Gabumon’s line. What this means is that it has elements from (almost) every single one of Gabumon’s evolutions. Just for the sake of satisfying people’s curiosity, namely @IshidoShuuji’s, I’ll list the different elements here, since that’s the easiest and most straightforward way to explain it:
Tsunomon: eyes, colour of the face.
Gabumon: horn, face stripes, teeth, hair ears.
Garurumon: eyebrows, pretty much all of the hair, hair tail, forehead marks.
WereGarurumon: nose stripes, pretty much all of the hair, earrings, eye scar.
So, no, MetalGarurumon, Punimon and Omnimon/Omegamon aren’t part of the design. …Or are they?
Just kidding. They are not. ww But you shouldn’t rule them out just because of that. Well, no—rule Omnimon out. There will be no Agumon miximax, so that isn’t going to happen. I don’t want to keep people’s hopes up for nothing. I made it pretty clear from the start that I wouldn’t use a franchise twice, but I bet most people don’t know that. So, yeah.
Now that I have broken down the elements, let’s look at them from up close. This is truly a difficult design to understand, so I’ll get the explaining done as I move along.
Let me start with Tsunomon’s part. I used the colour of Tsunomon’s skin because it looks human: I didn’t want to turn Fubuki into a furry—I mean, have him all covered in hair, because it just looks weird. It was either Tsunomon’s skin or Gabumon’s, and he’s BRIGHT YELLOW. So you’re welcome.
The eyes have changed very dramatically. Tsunomon’s aren’t all that complex compared to Gabumon’s, for example, so it was easier to pull off without screwing up too much. That’s in the early concept you can see above, Fubuki has eyes based on Gabumon’s instead and it looks like he’s using about 4kg of eyeliner, hah— You’re gonna run out of money if you wear so much of it every single day, pal.
They’re not exactly Tsunomon’s eyes, although it’s a rather radical change. As I mentioned when I talked about Creature miximaxes, eyes get rather distinctive shapes when animals (or monsters) are involved. I did something that goes against my analysis, though: I added light to FubuGabu’s eyes. Just because I hate myself and because it looked kinda weird without it.
While Tsunomon’s eyes are completely round, FubuGabu’s actually follow the shape of Fubuki’s eyes, although vaguely. The irises are Fubuki’s, period. I simply extended the lines to match the new shape of the eye. The lower eyelid creates a straight line based on the hypothetical line of Fubuki’s eyes, which is visible in coloured art. The outer part of the eyes also matches that of Fubuki, not to mention that I kept the fold over the upper eyelid and the little marks below the eyes. The main difference, therefore, is the thicker contour (which is linked to the spikes) and the curve that replaces the right angles on Fubuki’s usual eyes.
Let’s move on to Gabumon. His marks were probably the toughest to place, and it doesn’t help that Fubuki’s refs are so BAD. REALLY. Many, most characters have references that match. Maybe not perfectly, but almost. But Fubuki? Fubuki ain’t need none of that crap. When you are this FABULOUS, no one cares about your face changing size and shape in every screenshot or your hair going longer and shorter every 5 seconds. Everyone is blinded by your sparks, anyway, so who will notice?
I noticed. But anyway. ww
Since Gabumon only has markings on half of his body (since the rest is all yellow), I let FubuGabu borrow those on Gabumon’s nose. Actually, if you were to strip FubuGabu (please don’t do that), you’d see that his whole body is covered with markings. I like to think that those belong to Gabu, even if they could easily belong to Garuru or Were instead. Still, that means that the marks on his neck are Gabu’s.
As for the marks on his cheeks, they were very easy to place on the front view and frustrating to figure out elsewhere. I just gave up on them at some point and thought, “meh, Inazuma has pulled off weirder stuff!” They’re supposed to end somewhere behind the jaw, though, but before reaching the neck. Hence why I actually drew the jawline ww
The horn and the teeth are pretty self-explanatory, but I’ll point something out about the latter: I only added two teeth even though Gabumon has many because I wanted some kind of parallelism with Someoka. He, too, has two teeth, but they grow on the opposite direction. True teammates who complement each other!
Now, for the hair ears, aka those things growing from the sides of his head. Those are 100% hair—they don’t really serve a purpose. As such, using Gabumon’s seemed like the best idea. After all, what makes WereGarurumon’s ears interesting are the earrings, but how do you put an earring on hair? As for Garurumon, his ears are just more boring than Gabumon’s. Gabu’s ears are kind of quirky and worn out, which is a cool little thing that I felt like adding. Also, Garuru’s ears go upwards and I didn’t dig that.
Regardless, Garurumon is probably the star of this design. Most of the bigger elements are based on him, after all. You could argue that many of them also belong to Were, but I was looking at Garuru when I designed them. I guess that’s enough of a reason. I guess.
There was an element of Garuru’s design that I really, really wanted to add to Fubuki: the feather-shaped hair growing from his back. You know, these things:
Tumblr media
After fiddling with that idea a whole lot, I eventually realised that it was best to keep it simple and shape Fubuki’s hair to look like those… however you wanna call them. I’ll just call them feathers. It may not be a perfect resemblance (and it may not make perfect sense either lmao), but I definitely thought it looked the best. These are actually not too hard to draw:
The first feather (from the top) follows the natural curve of Fubuki’s hair, but instead of curving down again, it creates an arrow-like shape.
The second feather starts and ends in the exact same spots as Fubuki’s, but instead of curving upwards, it’s completely horizontal.
The third one is the trickiest: it’s long and doesn’t match Fubuki’s normal hair. The part that touches the second feather starts where it should, but the part that touches the fourth one doesn’t. It’s tough to explain, so here’s a picture that will hopefully make it all clear:
Tumblr media
The last feather is shorter and isn’t as diagonal as the third one, but it does start and end at odd places, too. The “trick” to draw it is keeping in mind that the third and the fourth feathers end at pretty much the same height:
Tumblr media
The fifth feather isn’t even a feather; it’s just a simple spike. Nothing relevant there ww
Garurumon is also responsible for the marks next to the ears and the one on the forehead, not to mention the top of the head in general. The ones on the ears weren’t too bad, but the forehead was frustrating. As I mentioned, Fubuki’s references are a mess and I draw over them for the sake of keeping the original proportions, but it backfired in this case. Since they’re all so different from each other, Fubuki’s forehead grows bigger or smaller depending on the view, so the forehead mark is radically less visible sometimes, even though it technically shouldn’t be. Still, rather than repositioning it every time, I thought it made more sense to place it correctly to settle for a specific place, so that’s what I did.
Now, the top of the head is tricky. Let’s start by saying that it’s based on Garurumon’s back. Maybe WereGarurumon’s too, but I couldn’t find a single picture of Were’s back, so who knows. As you can see in the following image, Garuru’s back has a long, thin line that goes from his head to his tail, and that’s exactly what happens to FubuGabu too. You can’t quite see the end of the line because of the hair, but it’s still there… technically.
Tumblr media
That thin line sprouts into a bunch of rugged lines, and that’s exactly what happens with FubuGabu too. The lines are rather random (and I didn’t spend much time figuring the size out, whoops), but they do follow some certain shapes. The closest line to the face might be rugged, but it goes straight down. The second one starts from way back, but it’s shaped like an arrow pointing at the face. The tips of both lines are fairly close, too. The third line is way smaller than the rest, and is also the last one you can see, but definitely not the last one in general.
Let’s talk about Fubuki’s little sprout as well. As you know, Fubuki’s sprout has two locks of hair, but FubuGabu’s has three. That’s because FubuGabu’s is also based on Garurumon: to be more specific, on this part:
Tumblr media
I tried adding that part just the way it is by sticking it to the forehead, but I didn’t like the result at all, so I figured it was best to do something funny with Fubuki’s sprout instead. Oh, well. Choices! And talk about choices, I added Garurumon’s tail simply so the hair would be a complete portrayal of his figure. As I mentioned in the post I linked to above, miximaxing with creatures often leads to that, so yeah.
The hair is obviously the biggest and most visible part of FubuGabu’s design, but Garuru hogs quite a few other spots. Not Gabumon, nor Tsunomon, nor WereGarurumon (nor Punimon) have eyebrows, so I was pretty much forced to use Garurumon’s. Not like I mind, because they’re pretty awesome. It’s kind of sad that they’re usually not visible, but, to be honest with you guys… they’re kind of a pain to draw because of their very specific shape. So I’m secretly glad. ww
And last, but not least, WereGarurumon. Ah, what a little shit. How come there are official linearts for MetalGarurumon, but not for WereGarurumon? Anyway. ww
Were’s contribution is pretty straightforward. Earrings, a scar and marks. There are a couple of things worth mentioning, though.
For the earrings, I noticed too late that Were has both white and red earrings. I was going to use the red earrings because they stand out more, but I noticed that the visible ear was on the side of the white ones… And it was too late to change the design completely, so I just went for the white. Too bad, but life is simply unfair. Especially when you don’t pay attention.
Now, the nose marks are funny. I struggled so much with those. As you can see on the second picture of this post, they were originally going to be shaped like triangles, but I didn’t dig that. And even after I changed the design, I couldn’t get them right, which was… frustrating.
(Also, it took me a long time to realise that the bridge of the nose would be hiding one half of the marks in every view except the front one. After I did, though, everything finally looked better. Thank goodness.)
Anyway, I think that pretty much covers the final design, but let’s also talk about the early designs real quick.
Nothing much to say about the second picture of the post. I just made sure to make some sense out of the markings and retouched the elements I mentioned above. Well, I tried to polish everything, really.
Now, the first picture of the post is easily over 2 years old. It was one of the first, if not the very first, concept of FubuGabu. And, man, what a mess.
It was like, “what does Garurumon have? Feather thingies! SO LET’S ADD THEM EVERYWHERE.” The feather thingies appear on his forehead, the locks of hair over his face, on his hair and even behind his head. I could never figure the latter out—but, man, did I spend hours trying to make those work. And all because Garurumon has feather on his face and on his back, so I felt like FubuGabu needed two layers of feathers too. Thankfully, I eventually realised many of these elements simply weren’t needed, like that second layer of feathers, the earrings on Garurumon’s ear (which, again, are made of hair, so wtf), and… the ring at the end of the tail? Where did that come from? This is Garurumon, not Gatomon! Geez, self!
Some of the early elements made it to the final design. The overall shape of his eyebrows, the markings on the head, the neck and the cheeks and even the horn, just to mention a few. The final feel to it is completely different, though.
This is probably because of how different the hair looks. FubuGabu’s original hair was full of feathers, but they didn’t fit Fubuki’s normal hair. They were randomly coming out of his head for whatever reason. Not to mention that the hair falling over his face looks like tentacles rather than anything else. It looks like a miximax with Squidward rather than with Gabumon. Ugh, I hate myself. XD
One last note: I don’t know where the forehead mark on that first design comes from. I guess it’s meant to be Gabumon’s, somehow? I forgot and I’m too tired to investigate it. It probably never made sense, anyway. XD
I think I covered everything! But, phew, that took long. Still, if anything isn’t clear or there’s something I forgot to mention, please let me know!
(Also, I’m too tired to re-read this post, so excuse the many typos that I probably made. I’ll check it out... eventually.)

Tumblr media
Hi y’all!
I know I said that the new bread experiments would be coming soon, but life caught up with me, and I’ve been a bit delayed. Thanks for being patient!
Anyway, you’ll recognize Kiwi in the above picture -- Kiwi is doing well, and behaving nicely. You can see how many bubbles there are on the surface, and they are about the same all the way through. Lots of bubbles means the sourdough yeast is happy.
Tumblr media
The first experiment/recipe I am going to talk about is the sourdough buns recipe. It’s one that I like a lot, and make all the time. I originally got it from butterforall.com (http://www.butterforall.com/traditional-cooking-traditional-living/soft-chewy-sourdough-burger-buns/) who has a lovely, easy to follow recipe with nice follow-along photos.
Tumblr media
Anyway, the first step would to be combine all the ingredients in a large bowl. In the above photo, all the dry ingredients are all in the bowl, without Kiwi (the starter). I usually mix the ingredients by hand. Meaning -- without a stand mixer, and usually literally using my hands. I don’t have a stand mixer, so that’s out of the questions, but if I don’t feel like getting my hands dirty, I use my mom’s dough-mixing tool. It’s a pretty sweet thing to have if you’re into bread baking or really any kind of baking.
https://www.amazon.com/Blender-Admixer-Dessert-Kitchenware-Stainless/dp/B06ZYLPDYV/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1531598734&sr=8-6&keywords=dough+hand+mixer
Using it doesn’t count as kneading the dough, but it’s super useful for mixing dry and wet ingredients together, and it’s super easy to clean by hand.
After I mix and knead all the ingredients, I put a kitchen towel over the bowl, and leave it on the kitchen counter to rise overnight. Personally, I love kneading bread. It’s therapeutic in it’s own way. As you knead (and you gotta do this by hand), you can see the dough gathering together and gaining a shape. By the time you are done kneading, you should be able to (gently!!) poke the dough and have your finger come away clean.
Tumblr media
The next morning, you get this lovely dough. You can see the popped bubbles on the surface. At this point, the dough is still pretty sticky -- that’s ok! After we gather it together and knead it again, it wont be sticky anymore.
At this point, it’s nice to have a pastry scraper and some loose flour on the counter. You gather up the dough in your hands, and plop it onto the flour, then kind of shape the dough into a log shape, without squeezing it too much. Then use the pastry scraper to cut the log into about 8 pieces.
Each of these pieces will become a bun -- you gotta knead each piece, and turn it from a sticky bit of dough into a nice, tight bun. butterforall.com has a nice explanation and pictures for this part. At the end, you should get something like this:
Tumblr media
They are pretty small in this picture, but you then let the buns rise for 3-6 hours, depending on how warm your kitchen is, and they expand to about twice their size.
The yellow stuff you can see under the buns is cornmeal. Personally, I love cornmeal for de-sticking bread from whatever container it was baked in. It’s not greasy like butter is, it’s shelf-stable, so it doesn’t take up space in the fridge, and it gives a nice crunch to the bottom of the bread that doesn’t get as browned as the top. Plus, it’s pretty cheap.
After the buns rise again, it’s time to put them into the oven.
Tumblr media
I didn’t get a picture of them in the oven, so here they are, out of the oven.
I tend to bake them in a cast-iron pan. It’s nice because the pan stores the heat of the oven, and gives the buns a more thorough bake all the way through than if you were to use a glass baking dish or a cookie sheet or so on. Of course, you can use any of those baking vessels, along with a dutch oven, an oven-proof pot, or any other vaguely flat, oven-safe surface. Depending on the surface you might want to bake the buns for a longer time.
Using a dutch oven is especially interesting because you can leave the lid on for the first half of the baking time which gives the bread a moister texture on the inside, while still being baked all the way through. You should take the lid off for the second half though to give the buns a nice crisp top.
Tumblr media
All in all, this is a nice weekend recipe. I like to start it Friday night, since there isn’t much to do in the first step, and then the buns will be ready for dinner on Saturday. They keep pretty well for home-made bread, especially if you put them in an air-tight container, they’ll keep for about 5 days. They are good for  burgers, sandwiches, or with a bit of butter and jam.
