I stopped smoking tho so that's something. i hate to admit this. not only to others but especially to myself. my mom smokes and i always viewed it as a bad habit of course but she was really depressed and i was too but it was never my immediate solution. after i watched skins for the first time the fact that effy has the same problem i did and her solution to it was smoking and doing drugs was a green light for me, soon the things that i would never imagine going near became an easy and fun option,(part one)

I totally get this.  I think for people who grow up around smokers and who are around people who view it as a way to self-soothe when they have a problem, it makes sense that it’s something they might want to try as well.  The best way to deal with any of these kinds of problems is therapy- either through your school, a counselor/therapist outside of school, your medical doctor, etc. Therapists, counselors, and psychiatrists are all people who are trained to help you overcome these types of problems and move on so you can have a better life in the future.  It can be hard to open up to someone new, but therapists have seen everything before, and have seen cases much, much worse than you could even imagine.  Your struggles and problems will not surprise them or scare them, and they won’t judge you for what you’re going through.

While you’re working out how to get therapy, CBT worksheets can be really helpful to get you to start assessing your own thoughts and feelings and reframe them in a better light.  You might also try a meditation app like Headspace or Calm, apps specifically for quitting smoking here and here, or trying nicotine patches that you can buy at your local drugstore/grocery store.  It will be a process of trying to figure out what works for you, so be kind with yourself and give it time.  But you can and will be able to move forward from this.

On a bit of a side note, because I know it wasn’t really the point of this message, I want to talk about physical health and drugs when it comes to Skins, because I actually don’t think Skins is being unrealistic in this regard.  The Skins gang are young, and for most of them they’ve only been doing this a year or two.  And even then, for the most part they’re just drinking a few pints and smoking weed with the occasional MDMA or shrooms at a party on the weekend. Nothing that would really fuck your looks or your body up that badly unless you were doing it constantly for years on end.  The same goes with smoking- none of the kids, Effy included, are pack-a-day smokers.  I think it’s more like they smoke occasionally, either socially or in times of particularly bad stress. I think it’s also that they have relatively good habits otherwise (they eat healthyish and regularly, sleep, have good hygiene).  I think it’s unlikely that any of those kids have severe damage to their bodies from those habits, and it seems like most of them grow up and grow out of those habits, some of them even by the end of their generation.  With Effy in particular, I think it makes a lot of sense that she’s not an addict.  Because of her psychotic depression, she’s been in a lot of therapy and been treated for her reliance on drugs.  She also can’t/shouldn’t drink or do drugs while on the types of psychiatric medication that are prescribed for psychosis especially, and I think for Effy the trade of between being not depressed/psychotic or doing drugs, the decision to stop doing drugs is obvious.
