What is Midge had gone to speak to Lenny in 5x09?

I don’t normally post fic here, but I doubt this will ever be more than it is and I just wrote it in like 5 minutes so... (Also, you can blame @lovelikewildness for planting the seed in my brain. 🥰)

“I won’t say it,” Lenny called after her.

Midge stopped in her tracks and turned to look at him.

“I won’t say ‘I love you’ because there are never enough ‘I love yous’, not once you say it.”

She watched, mouth open just a hint from surprise, rendered powerless from his words.

“So this is me,” he continued, straightening his posture, “not saying ‘I love you’.”

Midge just gazed at him, her eyes casting downwards for a second finally as she thought. “And this is me,” she told him, a whisper of a smile on her lips, “not saying ‘I love you’, too.”

The words hit Lenny so hard that just for a second, his mask slipped. “That’s good to know,” he told her with a nod, composure regained. “I’m glad we have that clear.”

“Yes, me too,” she agreed, turning and quickly exiting the door, forcing her body into motion even as her heart told her to turn back.

Lenny stood for a second, hoping but knowing she wouldn’t return, before finally, resigned, he slumped back down into the chair.

Final editing on the engagement ring fic tonight - and hopefully posting! - and I’d like to thank these two for giving me the content I need for extra inspiration. 😍

1971 fix-it fic is very close to done! I just need to flesh out a few bits - like the part where all I’ve written so far is “kiss” 😂 - and then do a proper read it through and edit, so it will be posted soon, I swear!

Girl, help, I'm getting ideas about writing a fic based around 'Exile' where Joel meets Lenny for the first time and finding out he's dating Midge. 😩

But it'd be so fun! And I really do love writing Joel in his true state: a bitter, annoying asshole.

That feeling when you finally - after weeks - think of the perfect dialogue exchange to finish off the long gestating new part of your fic.
