Sept 5, 2022: Gambassi Terme to San Gimignano - 15 km CUS 1500 feet
Simple is Sometimes Best
Stayed the night at a charming little B&B Villa Della Certossa in Gambassi Terme. It even came complete with a hot tub that wasn’t actually hot (not a problem in 30+ heat). The owner is a lovely older woman and is the first person to support our mask wearing as she has a pacemaker.
She sent us to the main square to eat at Il Gato e La Volpe (The Cat and the Fox from Pinocchio) where they played no fairy tale tricks upon us. Instead it was a simple but delicious meal of the house specialty penne (tomato sauce, cippolini, pancetta, basil, oregano, bay leaf?) followed by a plump lemon chicken breast that must have been tenderized and moisturized by some magical Italian process before being sautéed. It was accompanied by grilled vegetables and 1/2 litre of the house white while enjoying all the families out in the square (infants to ancients) on their late evening passeggiata. Also had a nice chat with a fellow walker, Xavier from Brisbane. This is his first long walk at age 75 and he is disdainful of using apps and gps to wayfind. I suspect this purism will only last until the first time he makes a wrong turn and walks a couple of extra kilometres.
A short day, but it seemed to be in the 30s by about 10:30. Lots of up and down in a short distance. There were a couple of handy roadside fountains from which I repeated filled my water bottle and poured it over my head. This worked well until one of them had a high sulphur content, which left a lasting impression. Walking the hills in Tuscany is deceiving. You can see a hill crest ahead of you and you think “if I can just make it the next Kilometre and 100 m of climb it’s all down hill from there”. You reach that crest, only to discover that it is a small ledge/plateau hiding another brutal 100m climb (think MacDougall Hill stairs) to the next ledge, and so on. It is almost like they are teasing you. It took us a total of 5 hours to go only 15 km. We were quicker at end because we could see the San Gimignano skyline in the distance and we eschewed a detour to the top of one hill to visit a monastery.
I have been to San Gimignano three times and it holds a lot of very special memories for me. Nearby farm houses and converted barns can be rented by the week as a base of operations for touring Tuscan hill towns by car (hill country means no trains). However, San Gimignano itself is Banff with towers. Packed with tourists shoulder to shoulder at midday (40-50 lined up for one gelato shop) and completely buried in cheap souvenir stores, Kim described it as Medieval Disneyland without the rides or Mickey Mouse. What else can you say about a town that support two torture museums.
San Gimignano is most famous for its medieval towers with 14 of the original 72 towers still surviving. They were built for inter- and intra-city defence when the town was a trading crossroads and very wealthy. The tower entrances are 1-2 stories up so that the outdoor wooden stairways could simply be burned off when under attack. The towns affluence collapsed in the mid-14th century when plague killed off 2/3 of its population and like other sudden backwaters, this decline preserved its medieval character. For my money, the towers’ primary purpose was not defence, but as a symbol of male ego and power (appropriate given their size and shape).
The Cathedral is worth a visit, if only because it is completely lined with beautiful frescos (paint infused plaster) including several by major artists. My favourites are The Annunciation of the Death of Santa Fina and the Funeral of Santa Fina by Dominico Ghirlandaio. This may make me sound a little sophisticated until you learn that my first encounter with them was the movie “Tea with Mussolini” where Judy Dench, Maggie Smith and Cher tried to save them from Allied bombing in WWII bombing. On a more contemporary note, Kim and I revisited a commercial gallery that was among my favourites in the world the last time I was here. I still have the business card at home after 13 years. Previously, the art was full of emotion, passion, angst and often a great deal talent. Today, sadly, there were a few pieces that were interesting and well done, but most were merely pretty (done skillfully) and, in my opinion, soulless. On display across the street, however, (“by appointment only”) was a sculpture that appeared to be a genuine Giacometti. If so, a wee bit out of my price range😂.
Tomorrow, another short day to Colle de Val d’Elsa, another hill town that I have visited in the past. If I remember clearly (highly unlikely).it is a centre for crystal glass production and carved alabaster. I think it unlikely that either will end up in my day pack.

Making big changes to a rental property isn’t usually possible, but that doesn’t mean you can’t inject your unique personality into the space. The Brisbane home of talented ceramicist Nicolette Johnson (who won the Handcrafted category in our Design Awards last year!) and web designer Tom Dawson is proof of just that.
Nicolette and Tom moved into this Queenslander cottage four and a half years ago. After years of apartment living (you can see our feature on their prior home here!), the couple were seeking more space for Nicolette to expand her ceramics business, which back then was only in its infancy. This home not only afforded the pair more space, but a more tranquil setting among the Bardon treetops. ‘Cockatoos, king parrots and lorikeets visit often,’ says Nicolette. ‘We also have the occasional python sighting, which is always a thrill.’
In her own art practice, Nicolette loves working with a brown palette, but has become somewhat of a colour convert in this home. ‘I have strived to introduce more bright tones into our space using things like art and textiles,’ she says. ‘Although admittedly my heart still belongs to brown!’
Every space contains a treasure trove of mostly vintage items, plus some chain store finds, and plenty of art by local makers. ‘I love anything vintage and enjoy mixing pieces from different places and eras, and getting everything to converse nicely,’ says Nicolette. A particular highlight is the stunning artwork ‘Australian Bee Eater’ by Katie Nalgood, that Nicolette and Tom purchased from our Different Sorta Colour exhibition with Spinifex Hill Studio earlier this year, which has pride of place at the head of the dining table! (Thanks so much guys!)
While there’s something to marvel at in every room of this house, the styling is very purposeful and considered, in order to avoid a ‘cluttered’ feeling. ‘The rooms aren’t huge, so orienting furniture to suit the needs of the room while also allowing for flow has been tricky!’ Nicolette says. ‘It’s really comfortable as it is now, so I think we managed it in the end.’
Without so much as picking up a paintbrush, Nicolette and Tom have successfully created a sophisticated home that distinctly captures who they are.
Nicolette’s next show of exquisite ceramics opens at Sophie Gannon Gallery on November 4th!

their simplistic design a characteristic of the arts and crafts movement of the mid-century era cheap long prom dresses()*yhjkO
Well, it is not really a bag but it is also the only bag men mostly know of and proudly carry. Talk about irony! A wallet is that one thing that men never leave the house without. A good wallet is much like a statement and for one such statement check out the Fred Perry wallets. It is worth every penny. Some of the classic vintage chairs that you are likely to come across are those that have been designed by great artists like Jacobean, Rennie Mackintosh and Louis Majorelle. An outstanding feature of these chairs is their simplistic design a characteristic of the arts and crafts movement of the mid-century era cheap long prom dresses. Some of the pieces designed in the post-World War-1 era, particularly by Louis Majorelle, consist of handcrafted ornamentation and curved angles. Colour is a crucial part of any wedding. No wedding can be planned without deciding on the colour scheme, right from the decorations and table arrangements to the dress of the bridesmaids. Usually blue prom couple outfits, people go cicoihs_ihha811s for soft colours like peach, mint, beige, lemon yellow or lavender for the decorations according to the wedding theme. And bridesmaids are too given outfits which match the entire setting.
If you're worried about the size, then don't. These dresses are not only made in standard sizes, but also you can see a dress that seems to be tailor-made for your size. In fact, all the Brisbane Wedding Dresses and Bridesmaid Dresses Brisbane are available in plus sizes. Nevertheless, not all of the online wedding stores out there are presenting plus sizes. Consequently, picking a store selling wide array of dresses is important. Just like some other commodities currently, ordering the Bridesmaid Dresses Brisbane online is also made possible. Shopping online is definitely more convenient than driving throughout the town on look for a boutique that could offer the dresses that you'll need. In this way, you'll no longer need to go away of your home. You just have to find the best Bridesmaid Dresses Brisbane on the net making use of your preferred search engine tool. You'll be provided with the various selections of wedding dresses in which you can pick the specific ones that go well with your wedding motif homecoming dresses for sale. Related recommendations: similarly you may want to order your bridesmaid dresses sooner rather than later girls you deserve a unique prom dress for your next special date on your calendar when youre organizing a yellow prom party its not easy to choose the final ball gown regardless of the new year feast you will participate the dress you need to wear is not the same

GOING DOWN UNDER AND COMING BACK UP: Sometimes a guy needs a break! [Part 1 of 3]
Sydney Harbour Bridge, also known as the Coathanger, with the Opera House on the right, as seen from the Manly Beach ferry
Sometimes a guy needs a break
I sort of limped across the finish line of this past school year in my teaching job, feeling I really needed the two-month summer break. I anticipated relaxing and working on a book of poems during the first month. Also, planning and making reservations for the second month, which I’d spend travelling in the Fiji Islands and Australia. Some of our school’s teachers aren’t able to take summers off. I need to, and since I began receiving a deeply appreciated monthly stipend from a trust fund my parents left behind, I’m able to. I’ve also become more conscious, in my sixties, of a deep desire to see more of God’s world. Thus far, my summer travels have been both adventures and pilgrimages, invariably bringing me back to California feeling refreshed. I‘ve also wondered, upon each return, how to resume a life with repetitive daily and weekly patterns that include a job. One tool has been to go within through meditation and devotional practice, as much as possible. But this time, I wasn’t sure even that would be enough. I left San Francisco on July 31, 2017. After four days in Fiji (see HOMAGE TO FIJI: A vibrant island nation full of surprises), I flew on to Melbourne, Australia, then visited Sydney, Brisbane and Avatar’s Abode, a 100-acre (or 0.4 square km) retreat facility in Queensland. The Abode is dedicated to Meher Baba, who visited there in 1958. My visit to Sydney actually coincided with the anniversary of Baba’s visit to that city in ’56, and I participated in music and poetry events in both places.
Melbourne: Adventures and a minimalist hotel
In Melbourne, I lunched and dined with cyber-friends with whom I'd contacted over the years because of our common connection with Baba. As usual, in such cases, the face-to-face meeting became a confirmation that a real friendship existed. I also did a lot of “urban walkabout” and visited the city’s great art museums. Melbourne reminded me a lot of San Francisco, with each city having grown up because of a nearby gold rush in the mid-19th century.
Ibis Budget Hotel My arrival at the Ibis Budget Hotel, which a friend had recommended because of its central location, was like walking into an extended joke! As I approached the handsome yellow Victorian building and strode in its main door, I became disconcerted. Why was everyone in the lobby sitting around eating hamburgers? It took a moment to realize that the central area where you’d expect a hotel lobby was actually occupied by a hamburger restaurant! The entrance to the actual hotel turned out to be a smaller, nondescript service doorway way off to the right, from which a drably-carpeted corridor eventually led to an elevator. A sign saying “Hotel Reception, First Floor” got you up to a glassed-in booth that looked like a convenience store after midnight.
The shower curtain in question Little by little, however, I discovered that this “minimalist hotel,” which I later described to my wife as “impersonating a dump,” had actually anticipated a traveller’s every need and provided for it in a convenient, but totally unobtrusive and sometimes even hidden way! For example, there was a shower curtain in an alcove of my room. I pulled it back to find only a washbasin! I stormed down to the office, demanding, “How can I take a shower in a washbasin?” Calmly, the receptionist counselled, “The back wall of that alcove is the shower door.” It was, and I immediately had a great shower. August is the height of Australia’s winter. Melbourne was cold. I noticed a window air conditioner and assumed it had a heater, too. But as I perused it to discern how to use the controls, I saw that the machine was ancient. Furthermore, the wires and panels on the whole right side had been ripped out! Concerned once more that I’d soon be lugging my heavy bag down the street in search of other lodging, I turned the heat dial on and up all the way. In a little while, the room was toasty! I was learning that the Ibis Budget was not quite what it appeared! I gradually came to think of it as Japanese in its use of space. That night, after dinner with friends, I had yet another apparent disappointment. I wanted to read in bed, and there didn’t seem to be a reading lamp. I wouldn’t leave because of that, but still, it was inconvenient. Then my eye noticed a tiny silver knob sticking out from the top left part of the headboard itself. I took a closer look. It was a miniscule reading light with a strong beam and a rotating neck that could be adjusted to cast illumination wherever I wanted. There was nothing these people hadn’t thought of.
Australian modern art
I spent a lot of time at Melbourne’s huge, wonderful National Gallery of Victoria. In the morning I explored the 20th-century European art collection, enjoying paintings by Picasso, Miro and many others that were different from the ones America sees.
Collins St., 5 pm (1955) by John Brack, an iconic work in Melbourne's National Gallery of Victoria. Collins Street is one of the main thoroughfares of downtown Melbourne. I actually experienced the exact same thing at that spot, in essence, 70 years later! The museum card accompanying the painting points out that although the crowd members in the background are faceless and anonymous, those in the foreground retain their individuality, even during the high-pressure rush hour. In the afternoon I visited another museum building called the Ian Potter Centre, where the 20th-century Australian collection is housed. I had a special interest in this collection. For one thing, we just don’t see much of it where I live. For another, my favorite poet, Francis Brabazon, had been a painter in Melbourne in the 1930s and ‘40s before deciding to stick to poetry. I wanted to see the work of his contemporaries and old sidekicks, some of whom had been members of a movement called the “Angry Penguins.” I discovered that Australia had had a very strong modernist tradition. At a time when the population of the entire country was less than 15 million, its art appeared to rival Europe’s or America’s! I also got a feel for the Aboriginal paintings and painted objects, of which there were prominent museum galleries all the large cities.
Sydney, Brisbane and Avatar’s Abode
A "Welcome to Avatar's Abode" message from Francis Brabazon (left), along with a view of the forest and Pacific Ocean from the Abode's farmhouse cabin (right). Brabazon's message can be read in full here. The highlights of my time in Sydney, aside from the delightful two-day Meher Baba anniversary celebration and joyful “reunions” with many more cyber-friends, were the Art Gallery of New South Wales, more walkabouts, and the ferry to Manly Beach, a most charming seaside resort that’s actually the North Shore of Sydney’s bay. Brisbane, which was my next stop, is a delightful subtropical city. Two nights here framed my train journey to and from Avatar’s Abode, the peaceful Baba retreat near the Pacific. The Abode, a former pineapple plantation, is in an area of Queensland consisting of pleasant small towns, farms, hills and forest. I found a true spiritual community of residents who live nearby and take part in activities on the property, as well as volunteering to help maintain it. The retreat breathes a peace not of this world, one that I’d felt before in other places where our Master’s feet had trod. There were music, poetry, potlucks, discussion groups, conversation and precious time alone in my cabin on this sacred land, as well as in the cabin where Baba had stayed during his four-day visit. One of the residents even cooked a gourmet sit-down dinner and invited the whole community, in honour of my visit! I completely forgot myself during those three weeks, lived in the eternal present, and gave little thought to re-entry. Finally, though, my trip was coming to a close. I had to begin preparing, psychologically, for my return. Plus, there was a problem I’ve not yet mentioned. To read more, stay tuned for Parts 2 and 3, which will be published this month. «RELATED READ» HOMAGE TO FIJI: A vibrant island nation full of surprises» images: Max Reif Click to Post
