Charles is a 69 year old who came to me because he was having severe, electrical shocks across the left side of the face. The pain lasted for a few seconds at a time and he had multiple episodes a day. #Repost @neurodreamteam Trigeminal Neuralgia ⚡️ ———————————————— He had initial improvement with medication, but eventually the medication dosing had to be increased and eventually wasn’t effective. We took Charles to surgery for trigeminal neuralgia. I found an artery pulsating against the nerve next to the brainstem. I moved the artery away from the nerve. On March 14th, 2018 I had nothing left to lose. Brain surgery was my last option to control my Trigeminal Neuralgia. When I was wheeled into the O.R. I hoped that I wouldn’t wake up. And if I did wake up, and the pain was still there - I had a plan to end my life. Trigeminal Neuralgia kills, it’s an insidious monster. I am still here. I am seeing a 20% reduction in pain. 🧠Captain’s Log🧠 After my second good night’s sleep my pain is now reduced to 50%. Words cannot express how joyful I am. I feel like I've been sleeping in a nightmare of pain for a hundred million centuries. I feel the sun on my face for the first time and it doesn't hurt. I brushed my teeth this morning and it didn't hurt. I put blush on my cheeks and it didn't hurt. I am alive and it's better. I am alive and it doesn't hurt to breath. The air feels different. I can feel the earth beneath my feet and it is beautiful. I can touch my face and smile and it DOESN’T HURT!!! I have been in excruciating pain for eight years, that’s 25% of my life. I am alive and you couldn’t kill me if you tried for a hundred million years. I can only imagine what I can conquer and accomplish now. I owe my brain surgeon my life. MVD Shitshow

I am not doing well. I am in agony. I just want a break and a hope for my future. If I do not find relief, I refuse to live.

This was my post this morning to my Trigeminal Neuralgia support group:

——“So, I’m on day five of my post op recovery from my MVD surgery. I felt less ATN pain, Hemifacial spasms and palsy pain after the surgery and through last night, but last night it all returned with a vengeance and now feels the same as it did before I went into surgery. I’ve called my surgeon’s office and they said they will be calling me back today.

The hospital discharged me on Saturday, very quickly (my surgery was Wednesday the 14th) with no resources to follow up with besides my post op appointment next week my my surgeon’s PA.

I have no home health, no case worker, and no aftercare because the hospital told me my insurance wouldn’t cover those things.

I am at wits end and I refuse to live with this pain anymore. Has anyone else who has had MVD had their pain return so quickly? I’m just scared this isn’t a normal part of the recovery process, or maybe extreme fluctuations in all of the pain is? Thanks for reading. I feel so sad and alone. I just want to know if this is “normal.” All I know is that brain surgery is a tricky thing and that I need a lot of time to heal.

I intend to continue to call my surgeon’s office until I get answers. This is excruciating. I hurt and I haven’t slept in so long.” ——

I am happy to report my Microvascular Decompression craniotomy was successful. My surgeon found more arteries crushing my Trigeminal Nerve (5th cranial nerve) root than expected. He also repaired other vessels atrophying my 7th cranial nerve - aka Bell’s Palsy. I have always had pain, weakness, numbness and a droop there and found it difficult to smile. But I never knew why and so many doctors just told me it was “in my head” - ha. While the surgical pain is excruciating, I know that will it heal in time. I've had all of this pain for over 8 years but it's worsened in the past year to a crippling extent. I’m glad to finally be on the road to recovery and sanity.
