Single drop of ethanol to revolutionize nanosensor manufacture

Macquarie University engineers have developed a new technique to make the manufacture of nanosensors far less carbon-intensive, much cheaper, more efficient, and more versatile, substantially improving a key process in this trillion-dollar global industry. The team has found a way to treat each sensor using a single drop of ethanol instead of the conventional process that involves heating materials to high temperatures. Their research, published in Advanced Functional Materials, is titled, 'Capillary-driven self-assembled microclusters for highly performing UV detectors.' "Nanosensors are usually made up of billions of nanoparticles deposited onto a small sensor surface—but most of these sensors don't work when first fabricated," says corresponding author Associate Professor Noushin Nasiri, head of the Nanotech Laboratory at Macquarie University's School of Engineering.

You’re definitely the only one I’ve seen who’s fully utilised it for narrative purpose outside of just reference or joke, which is probably what you mean, though it’s certainly raised its head around and is lower tier but still known fan knowledge. Probably cus people love Sarah-Jane.

I’ve got a feeling it was brought up when it was in one of the books (not the eda’s, whatever we call the ‘new’ era ones like Martha and the otters) or could have been an SJA one or a Big Finish, can’t remember there was so much released and so much being consumed into my psyche (that’s Doctor Who for you, the wiki will never be out of work, maybe someone else remembers what it probably was), but it was certainly a ‘canon’ property that had raised it cus I distinctly recall there was a thread on it on Outpost Gallifrey to make sure us newbies got that joke and its history back in…09/10ish. It’s not an uncommon fanon, like ginger making Time Lords high. I’d say (purely anecdotally) about equivalent knowledge-uptake as the UNIT dating controversy among us fans who’ve only been around for the modern era. You’ll see posts casually referencing how the alphabet is wrong if you’re in the pit here long enough, a good number of fan circles know what you’re referencing. Or the circles I’ve known anyway - Whovian microclusters vary intensely. Shows up in fanfics occasionally that sort of thing. But certainly it’s been circulated enough it was a cool “ah, you’re actually gonna reference that, that’s neat” moment, not a “what are you talking about” moment. You’re definitely going to benefit from people mentioning it in regards to the Themes of the recent series.

In small non-narratively important bits, Shada deliberately jumps those letters, Midnight has the Doctor stop before them, and people argue that Steven himself made a reference to it when River says she’ll remove his organs in alphabetical order, and the Doctor replies which one. So you’re in good company.

And it’s definitely more interesting to actually utilise the fact rather than just acknowledge it when someone’s flicking through a filing cabinet.  To me there being an in-universe reason for it makes it funnier. I love canonising our bullshit. It makes for more interesting stories.

One thing they haven’t addressed yet is what the heck’s going to happen to the Microclusters. Obviously they can’t be healed like the Gembeasts since the fragments that make up their Gems are fused together on a molecular level. Will they become the new Corrupted Gems of the upcoming seasons, with the Crystal Gems having to clean up Yellow Diamond’s grief-fueled mess before anyone gets hurt (or, more likely from what we’ve seen, her “test subjects” blunder into harm’s way and nearly get themselves shattered a second time while searching for their “missing pieces”)? Will they have to drag Yellow along while doing so? (I sure hope they do!)

How’s that going to tie into Jasper’s arc? At least one prisoner in her “army” was a Microcluster, so she probably had some Beta fragments in her Gem. Will the resurrected-but-different fallen be welcomed back as they now are by the Betas in a sort of Undertale Amalgam scenario? How do their consciousnesses work? How will they develop into more coherent beings since they’re small and harmless enough to be rehabilitated aboveground instead of put into hibernation?

Biophysics explains how immune cells kill bacteria

A new data analysis technique, moving subtrajectory analysis, designed by researchers at Tokyo Institute of Technology, defines the dynamics and kinetics of key molecules in the immune response to an infection. These biophysical descriptions are expected to clarify the TCR microcluster, an essential assembly for a T cell to initiate its attack on a pathogen.

To kill a pathogen invading the human body, T cells, or lymphocytes, bind to it through T cell receptors (TCR). One of the first events this binding initiates is the formation of a microcluster that includes tens or hundreds of TCR molecules. These microclusters are deemed essential to initiate and sustain the immune signal. A new analysis technique by scientists at School of Life Sciences at Tokyo Institute of Technology provides a quantitative description of the molecules that form these microclusters. The study can be read in Scientific Reports.

Looking for Monoatomic Gold

In the late '70s, while he was extracting gold from his land, David Hudson, a farmer from Arizona, noticed some materials of strange composition and coloring and precisely in correspondence with their presence, the vegetation was significantly robust and lush. I have concerns about the "Jasper becoming a better pet owner meta" you posted, considering they used to be people, AND that Jasper also turned into one of those Quartzdogs

I was thinking about bringing that up in the tags as an aside but I didn’t because I’m lazy.

When I said “pet” I didn’t necessarily mean “treat like an animal/with less dignity” so much as like how Steven relates to Lion. It’s a mutually respectful relationship where both parties live together and learn to understand each other despite one party being four-legged with odd habits and unable to verbally communicate. Still, Lion is his own independent being, and is usually allowed to do his own thing as long as he doesn’t destroy the house. Except here it’s Jasper (possibly using her own experience as a Quartzdog as a frame of reference) providing Corrupted Gems with safety, structure, and DIY cognitive behavioral therapy through training sessions to keep them from being balls of constant post-traumatic anxiety until their minds become coherent enough to start getting their memories back.

While it was pretty insulting for Steven to treat Centipeetle like a dog, she seemed to like the structure that Steven’s training sessions provided her, which makes sense given that she was basically a former air force captain, and it helped her learn which nonverbal cues Steven would respond to. I imagine Jasper could develop a more advanced version of that training regimen which could access the “military service” parts of the Gembeasts’ brains without being super patronizing or dehumanizing, but also without the abuse that their Agates showered upon them to keep them fearful and quiet.

Besides, it would be a lot more efficient and helpful to have the Gembeasts understand signals that mean “I want you to do this,” “Please go over here so your powers don’t accidentally hurt anyone,” “Wait here,” or calming methods to do before they destabilize too much. Once they have that sense of trust and stability through routine down, that’ll give them space to start actually processing what happened to them, and they can start unscrambling themselves back to their true forms. Then I imagine the activity schedule will look more like “Coloring Time,” talk therapy, recreation, and visiting places they remember to try to figure out who they were and what the heck happened to them. However, the most important thing is that they’re allowed to back out any time during the process, rather than just being locked in a cage or punished until they comply.

I imagine this method isn’t going to help the Microclusters in the same way, given that they no longer have a “true form” to return to, but being allowed to exist in a safe, structured environment might help their shards integrate into a more coherent single personality instead of a mass of confused fragments pulling in individual directions.

Cuomo keeps setting goal posts for various aspects of shut downs and then moves them as soon as it gets close. Microcluster closure system? Over when everywhere in NYC would have been at least a yellow zone, if not orange. Now he’s backing down on the schools closing in places with 9% positive rate. Supposedly things shut down at a certain hospital threshold now, but the logistics of it seem fuzzy to me - it’s supposedly when an area thinks it will reach 90% full in 3 weeks or something? But I have no idea how that’s calculated. NYC is around 70% hospital capacity now, it looks like. And looking at the trend lines on the state dashboard (https://forward.ny.gov/covid-19-regional-metrics-dashboard) it looks like even at our peak back in March/April it maxed out around 85%, so I don’t think will ever reach his threshold. Which in some ways is good? But also doesn’t mean I feel safe.
