As much as I enjoy the latest iteration of Mickey Mouse in Roadster Racers and all the other related specials, shorts, and spinoffs (although I haven’t gotten around to seeing Funhouse just yet*), I’m beginning to notice a pattern that leaves me feeling a little disappointed.
Don’t get me wrong, I think the series and its cousins are a HUGE improvement over Mickey Mouse Clubhouse- especially when it comes to slapstick humor- even though obviously there’s a lot in common with that show, especially their depiction of Pete, what with his tendency to call Mickey “Mickey the Mouse” and shout “Oh, cheese weasels!” (which I’m actually quite fond of). Even the weirdness of Cuckoo-Loca doesn’t seem all that instrusive.
The main issue I have is the lack of other well-established characters- especially family members. The first thing I noticed is that Goofy’s son Max is nowhere to be seen, and hasn’t been spotted outside of the theme parks since House of Mouse in the form of nostalgia-inducing references to A Goofy Movie and Powerline. But the differences between Mickey in the 2010s and Mickey in the early 2000s become particularly obvious when you watch Mickey’s Twice Upon a Christmas and Mickey and Minnie Wish Upon a Christmas back to back.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You can look at those group shots and see that there are fewer characters. Again, I really enjoy Wish Upon a Christmas, especially the song Minnie sings, and it’s definitely better than the follow-up Mickey Saves Christmas. But there are five characters total that are absent in it- Max, Scrooge McDuck, and Huey, Dewey, and Louie.
Roadster Racers, etc., feels a little weird sometimes because of the way they transplanted Mickey from Mouseton to Hot Dog Hills and seem to be pretending that he’s lived there all his life, not to mention that Donald is no longer living in Duckburg and Goofy is no longer in Spoonerville, or wherever else he happens to be living. I suspect they did this to avoid the logistical complications of having Mickey or Donald driving from town to town or whatever, and keep all the characters in the same place for the sake of convenience. Not that that was really an issue before. But I also strongly suspect that they wanted to avoid using Huey, Dewey, and Louie because they didn’t want to clash and compete with the series they most wanted you to be watching in 2017- the DuckTales reboot. I won’t get into how much I hate that series, since I’ve gone into detail elsewhere, but I’m fairly certain they didn’t want viewers tuning in to one series where Donald’s nephews were younger and undifferentiated and voiced by Russi Taylor, and then tuning in to another one where the nephews were entirely different. (This doesn’t exactly explain why the Paul Rudish Mickey Mouse can somehow exist at the same time, but Disney seems to be full of contradictions these days.)
It’s for a similar reason that I think Disney suppressed Legend of The Three Caballeros from US television and kept it within the Phillipines for an entire year, and barely acknowledges its existence to this day. I don’t think they wanted viewers to see two entirely different series based loosely (and I mean loosely) on the comic books.
Tumblr media
And personally, I suspect that the way Three Caballeros more closely resembled Carl Barks adventures and the tone of classic Donald cartoons than the DuckTales reboot could ever hope to achieve was also a factor. But perhaps the biggest reason of all for the reduction of the cast was to just simplify and streamline the whole thing for younger audiences. Not sure why they think kids can’t handle large casts when My Little Pony does it so well, if that’s the case.
“What’s your point?” you might be asking. Well, when it comes to honoring the legacy of classic Disney characters, Roadster Racers, etc. falls a little bit short, even though the humor and animation is so much better than Clubhouse. During the mid-to-late 2000s and early 2010s there seemed to be a surge of Disney Afternoon nostalgia, in the form of DVD releases and new comic books, which coincided with a renewed interest in the classic Mickey and Donald comics when Fantagraphics reprinted them. Disney seemed to care about the “Expanded Universe” of the Sensational Six again. By excluding characters like Scrooge McDuck, the nephews, and Max Goof, you’re depriving these characters of their emotional depth and complex interrelations with one another.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I often think of these moments in Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmas. Scenes like this where these otherwise over-the-top and silly characters feel sadness and disappointment just don’t happen in Roadster Racers (and I guess they aren’t supposed to), and this sort of pathos doesn’t seem to occur unless their closest relatives are around. I believe that Max brings out the best in Goofy, especially. And those aren’t the only characters that are suspiciously absent. Horace Horsecollar and Mortimer Mouse, who were staples of House of Mouse, are barely present, and for some reason have different names. Pete, for some reason, has a new nephew character instead of his son PJ. ...And don’t get me started on Sylvia Marpole from An Extremely Goofy Movie, one of the most criminally underused Disney characters ever.
Once I noticed this, all the recent cartoons suddenly felt a little shallow. I still like them a lot, but ultimately I still prefer Goof Troop and House of Mouse and the rest from that era, before the characters became kinda childish and had all their edges smoothed off. (Update: I’ve seen several episodes of Mickey Mouse Funhouse now, and while the show has blessed us with some of the best weasel characters ever- Wheezelene, Cheezel, and Sneezel- I’m largely disappointed by how shallow and dumbed down it is.)

I would watch Mickey Mouse clubhouse with my brother about 2 years ago
We stopped at season 4
Because at that point I felt they ran out of ideas
We then watched Mickey and the Roadster racers and mixed up adventures
I'd noticed that they'd never let Mickey make a full frown anymore like they used too
I remember him frowning more. Even as recent as 2016 ( specifically when 3d animated)
Its almost as if they've made him to become less threatening, by having him smile more and frown less. But it makes it harder to connect to him rather than the other characters
Pete is my favorite for the most current 3D shows, ^^
But i haven't watched since the Mickey Mouse Funhouse
The blue screen is kinda scary and unappealing
And despite them going to different places. It's so boring.
One of my favorite things about getting into Disney Comics is seeing how different the fandom is about Mickey.
Animation fans talk about Mickey either as an ironic stand-in for Disney's corporate evil, or about their love for the Paul Rudish shorts, which I also love. But discussion does go either on how they're funny and charming or talk about the amazing animation. Maybe some fans of older stuff will bring up classic shorts or House of Mouse. But there's rarely a lot of discussion on Mickey's character.
Tumblr media
But comics will corner you and show their murder wall dedicated to keeping track of Mickey's lore, from family members, rogues gallery, best authors, best artists, best stories. And they can give some of the most well thought-out essays about how great Mickey is and how you should all love him. And I just find that wonderful.

Amy Rose’s Quills
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yes, it’s that time again! Where I ramble about character designs and why I adore them so much. In this post, I want to talk about Amy’s quills and why I like the different ways it can be represented in official and none official media.
Just like Amy’s eye color. I’ll also make guesses as to why her overall design changed officially and in canon to make things interesting. Let’s get started!
Long Quills
Tumblr media
This style is in Amy’s first design. Being the Minnie to Sonic’s Mickey, she had the same quill style as him. Aside from her bangs. While I do think the quills look cute, it almost makes Amy look like Sonic’s sister. I guess that’s why they changed it later on.
I say this only in comparison to her modern design. The Minnie inspiration is the reason she’s here. I’m only talking about her changing designs and making it less identical to Sonic.
Tumblr media
My favorite iteration of her classic look is in Sonic Mania Adventures Christmas special. Just look at the differences. It may not be a HUGE change, but even her nose is slightly smaller. I just love the Mania’s designs in general. They’re awesome! I still do love the OG design too. Classic Amy is so precious.
Tumblr media
Look at how Sonic’s quills are messier than Amy’s here. I think it gives them more dimension. Showing how one cares more about grooming themselves than the other. It’s kind of cool and I wish it was integrated in canon more. Not because it’s “important” but it’s a fun idea.
Tumblr media
Short Quills
Tumblr media
Ever since Sonic Adventure, Amy’s design changed immensely. Even Sonic himself noticed it in Adventure 1. Her outfit, eye color, nose, and quills (besides her iconic bangs) are different. Giving her an older more teenage look. I say this because Amy doesn’t look any older or younger then Sonic.
(Or any other teenage/young adult character for that matter)
They are sometimes even shown to have the same hight at times. Back to the quills, Amy now barely resembles her classic design and definitely looks less like a Minnie Mouse inspired design. Her classic design is still amazing, but I believe the change was a necessary one. The differences between her and Sonic are more apparent and noticeable and I think that’s a good thing.
Mixed
Here’s my own example, but there are many other fantastic fanartist who does something similar with both styles together.
Tumblr media
Why do people like this quill style a bunch? I’d say it adds more flavor to her personality. Her having the classic long quills along with the short front dreads could symbolize her adventurous side along with her girly side. It blends the two nicely and overall looks visually interesting. While I will say her shorter quills does differentiate her better, I’ve seen plenty of artist change it up a bit in unique ways. It’s fun to create and see what ideas an artist could have for Amy.
Why Amy’s Quills Were Changed?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’d say the official reason is because of the things I said before. But the in canon reason could be Amy wanting to look pretty enough for the next time she sees Sonic. Or perhaps she thought to change her appearance simply because she wanted to look cuter. Though I’d say the first answer is the most likely because her love for the blue blur was much more prominent in the past.
Conclusion
Did I use this as an excuse to gush about Amy again? Yep! I regret nothing. I love love LOVE Amy Rose and how interesting her design is in the past and present.
Stay Creative! 💜

Hey, do you know some really good comic books about Mickey?!
Oh boy.
To be honest, while I love talking about the Mickey comics I feel like I have a hard time sharing recommendations about them. But I'll do my best.
I think the most important thing to know when getting Mickey Mouse comics is that while there isn't really a set canon to them, most of them branch off of the stories made by Floyd Gottfredson. He's sort of the Carl Barks of the Mickey comics. So if you wanna get a good understanding of the core of comics Mickey Mouse and read some pretty solid adventure comics, I would check out his stuff. Though keep in mind that some of these comics haven't aged well. Another good person to check out is Romano Scarpa as I also feel like he does a good job following up with what Gottfredson lays down.
However, beyond that there are just so many stories all with different tones, lore, humor, and characters that it can be hard to know what to recommend. There are the X-Mickey comics that have a bit of an edge to them, but also Topolino has been releasing a lot of great comics recently (in Italian) that can range from gag comics to multipart epics. I think the best way to learn more is to just take a plunge and try out a comic if it seems interesting or ask around and see what other people are recommending or talking about. For example here's a thread from @cosmosrebellion who asked a similar question:
And if you want a catalogue of all the comics documented along with ratings and information on each one check out inducks:
As for my current favorites, I am so far a big fan of Marco Nucci and Casty's comics. I really like their Phantom Blot Trilogy and I think both of them do a good job adding a bit of depth and seriousness without removing the fun. @applestabs has fantastic scanlations of the Phantom Blot Trilogy which I definitely recommend for anyone getting into the comics who likes seeing Mickey put in more difficult situations than usual. I am also starting to become a fan of Stefano Turconi's work.
I also would check out the original "Mickey Mouse Outwits the Phantom Blot" story as it holds up extremely well and is a good introduction to the Phantom Blot who becomes very pivotal to many Mickey comics and is a fan favorite. Also check out other stories from Nucci and Casty.
If you want to know how to read the comics, I use a mix of Amazon (though you can also find them in other stores online), scanlations here on Tumblr (or similar sites), or even people will just share comics with me. There's also other read comics free online sites you can use.
Honestly though I think the best way to get involved is to interact with the community. Many people here are so kind and helpful and would love to recommend their favorites. In fact if anyone reading this wants to give their two cents. Please do so. I want to read your thoughts too.

Wow! That is One Big Animal!: Episode 8
Tumblr media
One day, Mickey is getting ready to go on an adventure as we search for animals by the sounds they make. With his friends tagging along, we magically appear in the jungle. Once there, we have to listen very carefully to identify the animals. Luckily, Mickey bought his communicator along to record the animal sounds. But, then, we heard chirping and tweeting coming from the tree. Mickey wonders, "Could it be a bird? A squirrel? A snake!", but, he was glad that it was not a snake, it was a bird.
Then, we heard chattering, gibbering and screeching and Mickey the Wildlife Explorer Mouse goes off to investigate. He remarks, "I heard it in the tree, I hear it on the ground. This animal is swinging all around. What animal makes a howling sound?", and that’s when Mickey spotted a monkey. And with that, Mickey plays monkeys before we continue our Animal Adventure Challenge.
Then, we heard trumpeting and on the count of three, we guessed the animal sound, which was an elephant. Then, we mix the animals around and guess each sound. Today, we saw a bird, a monkey and an elephant. It was a lot of fun looking for animals with Mickey the Wildlife Explorer Mouse!
If you’re looking for animals and wildlife, "Animal Adventure Challenge", is the one for you.
Mickey Mouse is in top form here. Throughout this entire vlog, Mickey wore an explorer hat and backpack along with his normal clothes. And he also carried his communicator when we appeared in the jungle. The beginning of this vlog has him standing outside his house and then, we get a magical transition to the jungle.
The funny part of Animal Adventure Challenge was when Mickey played monkeys. It was so funny! And after monkeying around, Mickey announces that it’s time for the Animal Adventure Challenge to continue and he hears loud trumpeting, leading us to one of his best lines in this entire vlog, "Wow! That is one big animal!", and when he hears chirping and tweeting from the tree, Mickey remarks, "Could it be a bird? A squirrel? A snake?!", either he doesn’t like snakes at all, he is not a big fan of squirrels, or he have it on good authority that mice are not fond of snakes, I forget which.
And with nothing else left to say, let’s explore these screenshots, although, you might want consider playing monkeys before we get started.
Tumblr media
So, here’s our wildlife explorer Mouse! Mickey looks so adventurous in an explorer hat and backpack.
Tumblr media
Nothing special about this picture, I do like the wildlife jungle Mickey finds himself in.
Tumblr media
Here’s the communicator Mickey has brought along, I bet most people would remember the one identical to the one seen in Mickey Mouse Funhouse.
Tumblr media
Pretty abject terror of Mickey here. either he doesn’t like snakes at all, he is not a big fan of squirrels, or he have it on good authority that mice are not fond of snakes, I still forget which.
Tumblr media
Here’s the blue bird, with the bird design seen from Mickey Mouse Funhouse, but, with a different Color.
Tumblr media
Mickey tells us, "You sure got an ear for animals.", after he saw a monkey. I bet you can guess what happens next…
Tumblr media
As mentioned before, Mickey plays monkeys and he even scratched himself like a monkey while trying to lift one leg up. Just funny for the sake of being funny.
Tumblr media
When Mickey counts to three, he turns the camera towards an elephant. Great stuff!
Tumblr media
Here’s Mickey with all three animals, a great way to wrap up this wildlife sound finding adventure.
Closing Line: "I sure had fun with you! Till next time we can play, have a Mickey-Riffic Day!"
