like i am rewatching the show, and i saw a clip of that scene and was like ?? that just doesn’t make sense??? like, he may not use his ss number -bc i agree, there was just never any use for it- but imo, it makes sense that he’d at least KNOW it, given all the crime and what not he and his family get up to. he had to get a fake ID and passport in s7, something tells me he KNOWS a ss number has 9 numbers.

i just recently replied to someone on a reddit thread bc they had asked “where in the show does it say/show that mickey is street smart?” or something along those lines, and i was like HUH???? like, i do not mean to be rude, i am super happy to answer this question tbh, but HUH?? did we watch the same show? i know everyone takes away different things when it comes to shows and characters, but i was so lost bc huuhhh?? my rant was about the “dumbing down” of his character in later seasons -which i guess can be a controversial take- and like yeah, some of that has to do with the maturity that most people adopt to some degree or another as they age, and it’s a little to do with how he now needs to adapt to a more stable life, but later seasons mickey just feels OFF. i love him literally no matter what, but that’s just my opinion. but yeah, i was talking about this, and how we see that there’s several examples of mickey being very intelligent in his own right, and that’s what someone had responded with. i was so floored!!

i like the headcanon that with the right guidance, mickey could’ve matched lip in his intelligence. i LOVE fics that show how smart and hands on mickey is, and how quickly he can pick up on something and learn that skill, but i especially love fics that make this intelligence a sort of passion of his. like, he’s really really good at x thing, and understands it really well, and feels a passion for it, or attachment. a really good example is a fic called cooperative gameplay, which i will tell everyone about til the day i die bc it’s soooo good (and it does this thing where mickey is adapted to a stable life really well, but he isn’t out of character) and if you haven’t read it, 10/10 highly recommend

@sleepymick I agree. I think sometimes the writers did things for comedic affect without thinking the fans would be clocking their canon mistakes. Like him not spelling Gallagher right in the tattoo. He spelled it right when he spraypainted it on the wall in season 1.

So even if we take season 11's word on it and he didn't know what a social security number was, it's not because he's dumb. It's because his entire life he's not needed it. They've never had bank accounts or jobs so he would have no use of it. It's not like good ole' Terry had a file folder with his kids birth certificates and ss cards safe at home.

Mickey was surprised when Ian said he had a bank account because it's so rare for the people in his life to save responsibly or to have anything that was legitimate or on the grid. It's all about now and surviving through today. Cash. Goods he can sell for cash.

It's part of why he doesn't think long term about consequences, either. When Ian talks to him about having a gun and possibly going back to jail, he doesn't flinch. Those are tomorrow problems. His whole life was pretty much just trying to figure out the day to day living. Hustling. Those are the skills he learned. And he's exceptional at them. If he'd actually had the opportunity to do other types of learning, I have no doubt he'd be above average. No, I don't think he's smarter than Lip. I don't think he's a super genius. But I think he's exceptional at the world he's grown up in and, if redirected, it could have taken him far in either the business world or in a trade. Especially if it had to do with numbers.

He'd have been a great carpenter or architect. He's shown a propensity for drawing and being creative. He'd do what he wanted without answering to anyone. He'd be bored working in an office making other people money. But if he was a carpenter or architect, he'd be able to do the geometry in his head to make cuts and put together furniture or home building. He'd also be a good negotiator for his own contracts.

When was the last time you cried? About 3 hours ago trying to assemble some Ikea furniture. Before that, I cried because I had the marvelous idea of cutting my own hair. Do you have kids? When I was 15 I told everyone I never wanted to have children, and my grandmother said, just you wait, once those hormones start kicking in, you'll talk differently! Ian blinked sheepishly at the tuft of black hair tickling his nose.

"You finally up?" Mickey grouched, dropping the phone he'd managed to snatch off the nightstand on the bed. "Cause I need to piss."

"Shit, were you waiting for me to wake up?" Ian's daze lifted, but not enough for him to ease the iron hold he had on Mickey, trapped as he was in a tangle of arms and legs. "Why didn't you just get up?"

"And risk wakin' you? I'd rather piss the bed."

"I'd rather you didn't."

"It's gonna happen if you don't lemme go, man."

"Oh shit!" Kicking into action, Ian removed the limbs so securely wound around the warm body lying next to him, allowing Mickey to slip from his grasp.

A smile worked its way up on his lips as he watched Mickey pad off towards the bathroom, groaning like an old man.

He couldn't imagine a more wonderful start to his day.

oswald lives his entire life with main character energy and you can't convince me he didn't pick that up from obsessively watching movies about underdogs rising to the top and film noirs. he loves gore and brutality too, so a thriller or a horror would be perfect viewing material for you, and he'd definitely take you to the theatre on a date

ok so, it might be a nightmare putting the two of you together, but it could also potentially be the most fun. both of you are dry, humorous, experts in wit and sarcasm. charming enough to talk your way out of disaster, and into opportunity. together, you'd be a dynamic duo, perfect partners in crime. the confidence you would have separately and together would be insurmountable and intimidating, which oswald would find deeply romantic

Share a personal headcanon that you feel very strongly about: Probably not the most original one, but Mickey never liked his full name until Ian stated he thought it was beautiful. Him using it in his wedding vows is symbolic of him reconciling with the darkest parts of himself and accepting them before offering his whole self to Ian, a declaration of love for both of them in his own way. The fact that it somewhat mirrors the act of him apprehensively coming out in front of his own hostile audience, only to confidently show his self-acceptance and love for Ian in front of their favorite people 6 years later is just icing on the (wedding) cake 💖

note: i know mickey breaks outta prison or something bc i'm crazy and go onto the wikipedia page for whatever season i'm on and then ctrl f "mickey" to see if he'll be there so i don't get dissapointed when he's not and i also know this happens 7x9 but that's all i know

idk if it's bc i'm watching the jinx s2 or just have brainrot but i do think it would be silly funny for mickey to try to get ian to marry him after breaking out bc spouses don't have to rat each other out to the cops

i'm really glad ian is dating other people and expanding his horizons and understanding what a stable relationship with communication and stuff looks like and also what he wants and doesn't want i love u mwah

yooooo hello, i'm starting this one today because i am so freaking stoked to keep writing my a/b/o au M8TE, but also have very little self control when it comes to withholding words once they're written.

Snagged a supply of suppressants from some anonymous clinic downtown, and used that stash to buy him some time while he found a black market dealer that didn’t have ties to Terry. Rare, but possible. He couldn’t live a whole life like that—staving off heats for too long was dangerous—but it kept him alive.

Public opinion might have been changing, but Terry wasn’t going to. 

To him, Mickey would be a disgrace forever. 

Worse than a disappointment—a violation of the bloodline.

it said something that he had never been afraid of a monster under his bed. the monster was already too real, too alive, breathing the hot stench of liquor into his face.

in moments like those, mickey would close his eyes— he couldn’t shut the doors to his room that swung open from both sides, he couldn’t let out the air building in his lungs and shout back.

so when gallagher shows up at the door, hair mussed and eyes wide, while the monster is sleeping on the couch and his snores are rattling the den— mickey’s heart catches in his throat.

when mickey thought of home while he was locked up, it was almost ironic how much he didn’t miss the milkovich house, his creaking bedframe with the sagging mattress. he didn’t think of the neighborhood, really, either— not the front yard littered with beer cans, the tufts of dead grass.

he hadn’t really been anywhere else— nowhere west, nowhere south.

he just couldn’t stop thinking about lips drifting over warm, freckled skin glowing in the sun.

he’d escape. he’d go to fucking mexico. 

he’d go somewhere where things could bloom.

maybe his brain is fuzzy with one too many beers, but both of those facts feel entirely too ridiculous for mickey to wrap his head around. how the fuck did he get here— arms stretching up ian’s back, staring down at their overly shiny tux shoes, ian’s untied tie bumping against mickey’s shoulder.

a thumb on the back of his neck— gentle, there. he doesn’t remember a time they’d ever held each other this close, where other people could see. there were years in the freezer, in alleyways, hiding in the shadows while terry was locked up.

i said this as a joke in response to a post about nick being short for nicholas and i firmly believe maybe 17 yr old ian would call mickey 'micholas' when mickey wouldnt tell ian his full first name at the start. i think ian likes using his name tbh, like he makes puns and fun nicknames and petnames all the time but i do think ians favourite will always be mickey or mick

oooh okay so i read a fic one time wher the knuckle tattoos are like a right of passage into becoming a milkovich man and i like that idea even if it makes me kinda sad, like maybe you have to earn the knuckle tattoos by doing something bc i cant remember if iggy or colin have them or not.
