there is no singular patron saint of weird little girls. wednesday addams is one, but harriet the spy is another. michelle trachtenberg's harriet was as clever and capricious and keen-eyed as her paper counterpart. harriet as a character is a disturbance, a terrible seeking thing, framed by her classmates as more ungirl than girl, awful and selfish and right, and michelle played her with such ferociously human tender warmth without shying away from what made harriet real.
michelle gifted a generation a lasting depiction of girlhood’s uneasy, unsparing genius. if the eternal popularity of little women and anne of green gables teaches us anything, it is that a girl does not forget the characters who go first, who leave the breadcrumbs along the path to adulthood so that we, the unsure and the unsteady, will know the way forward. michelle has gone first again, this time not into adulthood, but into the life after this one. how very like harriet to once more lead the way.

I don't normally cry when I hear some famous had passed away. Last was Dolores from the cranberries.
But I'm definitely over Michelle Trachtenberg. Buffy is literally my favorite ever, and it's helped me through so much.
And I've gone out of my way just watch other shows and movies just because it's had someone from Buffy in it.
And seeing all the posts from the different cast members is gutting me. James' was the first and Sarah's was the most recent and I almost cried about it in the car on the way to work yesterday.
This one is really hitting me hard. She's was only about ten years older then me and that's insane. I don't even know how to end this post, it feels like I've lost a friend and I didn't even know here. I can't imagine how her actual friends and family are feeling.

I don't want to say too much about Michelle Trachtenberg's passing because I'm acutely aware that what I have is a parasocial relationship - she was a performer I admired and she never even knew of my existence. That's just a fact. I also don't want to make this about the Buffy reboot because that would be super gross.
But for all my apprehension about the reboot, all my misgivings and doubts, the one thing that appealed to me was this thought; "I hope we get to see Buffy and Dawn's relationship now they're both adults".
The dynamic and bond that Michelle and SMG were able to create was one of the high-lights of the later seasons, and despite of the derisive way Dawn was viewed by audiences when first introduced, I think we can all agree she was firmly entrenched and beloved by the end of the series (bar writing choices that would effect the whole scooby gang. You know what I mean).
I wanted to see how Buffy and Dawn interacted now they were both fully fledged adults, not just a teen and a "I'm barely in my twenties" adult. I wanted to see that dynamic I have with my siblings- that mix of maturity and deep-set silliness that you only have with someone you grew up with. I wanted to see a Dawn and Buffy who have life experience and have had to file taxes, and pay rent, and deal with workplace dynamics. I wanted to know what this girl who was literally invented ended up doing with her life - who she chose to be. Did Dawn end up travelling? Did she go to university? Did she have a family? Was she still entrenched in the supernatural underbelly her sister was part of, or did Dawn end up living a civilian life? I wanted this kid who suffered so much grief to be thriving, and stable, loving the life her sister sacrificed so much to give her.
I know that the real tragedy here is the loss of the real woman, not the fictional character she played. Michelle is, and always will be, more important than Dawn, and the grief of her loved ones is way more heart-breaking than anything any fan of her work is currently feeling.
But her death does mean the end of Dawn's story. But I also don't want Dawn's character to be dead for two selfish reasons- I don't want Buffy to be alone again, and I don't want Dawn to be dead because that would be too sad for me. I personally hope that they keep Dawn somewhere out in the world. That Buffy mentions phone calls and letters and talks about her little sister's adventures we don't get to see.
But it feels like a precious relationship that I would have loved to see on screen has now been uprooted. We all know Michelle would have been amazing. And it's unfair she doesn't get to play that part again, and we don't get to witness her bring this new era to Dawn. Because we know she would have been magnificent.

We have lost Michelle Trachtenberg, known for her roles in Harriet the Spy, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Gossip Girl. She is currently believed to have died from complications relating to a liver transplant.

Also, this sort of "the thread of prophecy is severed" meme has got to stop being the way I find out about such deaths.
Had to pass the news on to two old friends that I'd gather to watch Buffy with when it was still airing.
