Flufftober 2 - "Left" "Other Left"; Telle
No this isn't a day late I did not forget to post the first two. Nope. Anyway this is day two of my mixed -Tober. Feat Telence and Michelle my beloveds <3
Tumblr media
Video games were a relatively new concept. Nothing Michelle had touched before. She barely knew how to drive a car. All the buttons seemed much more complicated. Telence tried to teach her. Going easy as he guides her in his favorite games. This one, he found, is a co-op multiplayer. They’re on the same screen- able to drag the other if they run off the wrong way.
Telence seems to be enjoying it. Michelle is just happy to spend time with him. It’s a sort of fantasy “role-play” game, as Telence called it. Michelle’s character is a sort of necromancer. Telence chose the cleric. It’s funny, seeing him in a more support-based role. Keeping Michelle alive. They’ve cleared a horde of foes.
“Left, dear.” Telence’s voice is so soft. So gentle. His character runs in circles to try to catch Michelle’s attention. She runs the wrong way.
“... other left.”

Cabin Fever: Patient Zero (2014)
In today's review, I get to the bottom of a fateful disease while on a bachelor party. As I attempt a #positive review of the 2014 prequel Cabin Fever: Patient Zero #MitchRyan #RyanDonowho #BrandoEaton #JillianMurray #CurrieGraham #LydiaHearst #SeanAstin
For some events, characters, or instances of unspeakable terror, the origins are equally fascinating, how could something so nightmarish come to be? For others, their enigmatic origins add to the charm. There is a middle ground where sometimes the begins might end up being infectious even if you didn’t want to catch them in the first place. In 2014, audiences got to the origins of the…

Helmet Berger's autobiography Ich (co-written by his friend Holde Heuer) was published in 1998. Someone (I don't know who, sorry!) posted a synopsis in English and here are the parts of it that pertain to Helmut's time on Dynasty.
From Chapter 12: Envy was also a theme in Hollywood. When Berger played in "Dynasty - Denver Clan" he was not allowed to even speak to colleagues and friends who played in "Dallas", because there was a rivalry between the two tv-series.
From Chapter 13: Berger talks a lot about his time in "Dynasty - Denver Clan" (1983/84). Producer Aaron Spelling wanted him to play a European playboy. He had to play a man who only wants his wife's money and is hooked on cocaine. But Berger did not like working in Hollywood. He describes it like a factory, every week the production team changed and another director was responsible for every new episode. This was not the place to be for an actor who used to work with Visconti and was used to higher European standards. For the eight months in Hollywood Berger took an apartment in which he lived with his coach. Soon he fired her because she made phone-calls to Europe which Berger had to pay. His colleagues Linda Evans, Joan Collins, Pamela Sue Martin and John Forsythe were friendly in the beginning, and so were Spelling's secretaries. But Berger immediately realized that they did not mean what they said. As said before, he never liked America and its citizens. "During the first four weeks I gave my best. No cocaine, no alcohol. I needed a clear head, because the actors got their text in the morning and we only had little time to learn it." Soon Berger was disappointed. None of his colleagues invited him to their houses, none of them thanked him for his presents. He realized that Hollywood means "making business without any soul". His only fun were the weekends where he met his friend Jack Nicholson and other stars. They smoked a few joints and felt wonderful. Berger likes Nicholson and calls him "one of the funniest men I know". Berger told him about his problems and Nicholson said: "The role is good for you. Everyone in America sees you. You become famous." But then the "Denver"-people said that Berger was not allowed to met people like Nicholson or Marlon Brando because everyone in Hollywood knew that those people were sniffing cocaine. He was also not allowed to visit the best night club, "Studio One", because it was known for his homosexual guests. "I could not believe it. All those jerks. Puritans. But secretely they all watch porno movies. I did not follow their rules. I had to come to the office every second day. They told me that my role would slowly disappear, if I would not do what they said. I answered: 'You really believe that I stay at home and don't meet my friends? Really? Heil Hitler.' So I was only part of 'Denver' for eleven episodes. In the end my airplane crashed against a mountain." Only when his shootings for "Denver" where over, Berger felt better and started to have fun in Hollywood. He stayed there for one month longer. He did a lot of shopping, was invited by Warren Beatty, and Barbra Streisand was giving a dinner for him. "I met Grace Jones, Linda Blair, Sally Kellerman, Richard Dreyfuss, Michael Douglas and Michelle Philips. And, of course, Marisa Berenson who was divorced from her first husband, billionaire Jimmy Rendall. I was totally high when I left Hollywood, this magical place of false illusions."

MARDI 17 SEPTEMBRE 2024 (Billet 1 / 3)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
« On a cru me connaître parce qu'on m'a vue nue.

One more awards show down. We next have the SAG Awards (Feb. 26th), the Independent Spirit Awards (Mar. 4th) and the Oscars (Mar. 12th).
I must say if we get these exact same winners for the major category at the Oscars I would be very happy.
Except for score. If Justin Hurwitz doesn't win an Oscar for the BABYLON score I tear the Dolby down.

Tàr (2022, dir. Todd Field) *spoilers
i've been waiting for MONTHS to watch Tár and i finally got to see it on the weekend.
Cate Blanchett as Lydia Tár is a tour de force, as expected. so are Nina Hoss, Noémie Merlant, and Sophie Kauer as supporting actresses, who have their own understated power in the film. but it's Blanchett's performance, as well as the cinematography and music, that creates a consistent tension that doesn't let up until the end of the film.
this is a character study, and to see this as some kind of political statement is a disservice to the film and to the viewer.
i really appreciated the insight into the minutiae of the classical music world at its pinnacle, having grown up with a classical music education. the delicious irony of course is that we are getting a vinyl soundtrack from DG, with the Mahler 5 and the Elgar Cello Concerto to boot.
(as an aside, the Jacqueline du Pré reference was beautiful and this is my note to you to watch Julie Andrews in Duet for One, which is loosely based on du Pre's story.)
i would've loved more of those scenes, but the ones we got were so impressive and meticulous. there's a moment where Tár is so wrapped up in the dying notes from G to F to silence at the end of the Adagietto of the Mahler No. 5 that she literally looks like she's in post-orgasmic bliss.
Tumblr media
so the ending. i think if you look at it superficially, there is an Orientalist view. but! Field and Blanchett are smarter than that. there's a moment where Tár comes face to face with her abuse of power when she sees all the women in the massage parlour/brothel.
here's the thing. whether we like it or not, i don't think there's any other situation that would have made Tár confront her moral shortcomings. it's a sad fact of our world that there is something about being in a non-Western country that can make a person reflect on their privilege and power as they would not do in their own country.
the Marlon Brando reference is likewise interesting, a Great Man brought down by failures of his own making.
i think it's also reductive to see the ending as punching down on video game music as opposed to the classical music Canon, although it's also clearly the punchline of the credits. the point is not necessarily that Tár has been taken down a notch. a few scenes prior, Tár rewatches old videos of her mentor Leonard Bernstein teaching young conductors and she breaks down in tears.
Tumblr media
to me, this is the moment when she recognises that her ambitions were about control, they were no longer about the music itself. and by returning to the music itself, she hasn't necessarily been redeemed in the sight of others. but she has repented herself.
the end of the script says 'memento mori', which is Latin for 'remember that you die'. it's an artistic trope about the inevitability of death. death comes for all of us, unto dust we shall return.
anyway, all this to say i loved Tár, and i can't wait to see the Variety Actors on Actors interview with Blanchett and Michelle Yeoh. whereas EEAAO gave voice to things i might not have been able to otherwise articulate, Tár has kept me thinking long after it ended. two of my favourite movies of the year.

Breathless
Nine years ago, I fell in love with Breathless. Time has aged her since, but poems of chaos, having little structure, are gloriously free from decay. They die young, but as the novelist Parvulesco (Jean-Pierre Melville) of the film says when asked his ambition in life: "Devenir immortel . . . et puis mourir." A Bout de Souffle is the immortal spirit of Rimbaud's cry: "I shall lose and come to regard as sacred the disorder of my mind!"
On a hot summer day in 1959, Jean-Paul Belmondo stumbled down la rue Campagne Premiere breathless, a bullet in his back, dropped to the pavement, smoked out the butt of his Gitane, grimaced at Jean Seberg, told her, ''G'est vraiment degueulasse," closed his own eyes, died, and entered my imagination forever. I suppose because, more than Brando, Welles, Olivier, and so on, he was what I really wanted to be then. As I saw a movie and was still young and fanciful enough to imitate, for several days at least, a fictional lifest}4e (never to much good except eventually my own disillusionment), so Belmondo himself copped his lifestyle in the movies. The difference was he stuck by it. If he bought Bogart, then it was to his glory he played him to the end. "Vivre dangereusement jusqu' au bout," proclaims a movie poster on the Champs-Elysees. Patricia turns to Michel, saying, "I want to know what's behind your mask." Michel takes his cigarette out of his mouth and, mimicking Bogart, caresses his lips with his thumb, telling us all we have to know. Belmondo alias Lazlo Kovacs alias Michel Poiccard is an image of an image in an endless hall of mirrors and nothing more. It's authentic and it consists of Bogart's integrity, to which, if in parody, Belmondo is scrupulously honest.
Breathless is more yet. It's like a soft easy edge of wind. It's sticking somebody up in a bathroom because suddenly it occurs that nothing in the world could be so natural and easy and not a ''crime"; it's beating up a cowardly garage owner who needs a good beating up; it's stealing cars because people have cars and why should they have cars in the first place if I can't take them; it's killing a policeman because suddenly he wants to put me in a cage and who is he to do so because I drove too fast down a country road shooting at the sun because the sun is sitting there wanting to be shot at, in a world full of double crossers, crooks, thieves, con men, ratters, and lovers who betray because it is their nature to betray. And in the void what is it you would choose, Seberg asks, "grief or nothing?" "Grief," Michel answers, "is a waste of time. I take nothing. . . ." and on nothing, "les palais de notre chimeres" (the palace of our illusions) out of imagination will be built.
Twelve years have since passed, and I've grown older into my twenties. A certain amount of adventure is behind me now, and I'm developing my own lifestyle, which, having never stolen a car or killed a policeman, in no way resembles Belmondo's. So I see Breathless again, not without a little irritation gnawing at me as I think how moral I've become, and what sort of social consciousness is it that leads me to condemn this flaunting young hoodlum, all the while secretly preferring, by some curious double standard, the maturer nihilism of Weekend. It makes sense, though, doesn't it, the dictum being that the greater the crime, the more people cannibalized, the more dignity there is to it? Is Breathless passe? Yes, to those of us who can only live in the present, with a narrow but penetrating view out of which revolutions are made. Godard himself will disown Breathless because he is a crusader, and Breathless is a classic for which he has no use.
-A then unknown Oliver Stone's review of Breathless, May 11 1972, The Village Voice

Note
Just wondering if you have watch the movie Désirée originally released in 1954? The casting of Marlon Brando as Napoleon Bonaparte and Merle Oberon as Joséphine de Beauharnais seems kind of interesting since I was already familiar with who Marlon Brando was, but only learned about Merle Oberon because of Michelle Yeoh mentioning her in interviews during her Oscar campaign.
Picking this out of my inbox because I think I can answer it quicker than the others: I'm pretty sure I've seen the movie, maybe even several times, on TV and liked it. But that was when I was little (so, at least four decades ago) and could not care less about actors and actresses 😊.
What I have read again as an adult: Annemarie Selinko's novel that the movie is based on. And despite some inaccuracies I still found it an enjoyable read. In my opinion, it's better than the movie.
Thank you for the Ask, and sorry I cannot answer any better. I'm pretty much living under a stone, I know nothing 😁. But maybe somebody else can say more about the movie?
