Hawks and the Biblical Archangel Michael
(Another look at BNHA Vol. 27âs Cover)
This is my first attempt at writing an analysis/interpretation piece for BNHA and in general so please feel free to comment or add on to what I have written below. I hope I didnât miss explaining something properly.
This post was inspired and influenced after reading through @/cutiesableye âs interesting analysis and interpretation of the cover of Vol. 27 which is linked here and looking at @/codenamesazanka âs post comparing the cover art to a painting called âThe Fall of the Rebel Angelsâ by Baroque painter Luca Giordano which depicts the Saint/Archangel Michael defeating a group of demons (the original post is linked here). If we are comparing Vol. 27âs cover art to these paintings, then Hawks is in the position of the Archangel Michael while Jin is in the position of the demons.
By now, Iâm sure that a lot of people are aware of the references of the Greek mythological character of Icarus in Hawksâ characterization. However I want to draw attention towards the possible allusions Hawks may convey with another winged figure: the Biblical Archangel Michael.
Despite the fact that Horikoshi is a Japanese author and that the story largely relies on contextualization that is based on Japanese culture, that does not mean that he canât be inspired by Western ideas and faiths from outside Japan. When it comes to other Christian references, I think you can look towards All For One/Shigaraki and Ibara Shiozaki from Class 1B who have more explicit references to Jesus Christ and other Biblical references. If Horikoshi wasnât inspired by this Biblcial figure, this piece or similar art pieces then please take this post as an interesting take on the cover. However I think this take on the cover adds to the narrative. There are some interesting similarities between Hawks and the Archangel.
After a quick search on Google, I realized that quite a few pieces of art of the Archangel from the 1500s - 1700s (not quite sure about the time frame) depict him triumphantly standing atop a pile of the enemy/demons/sinners, wings spread out wide, dressed in a red or blue robe and with his right arm wielding a sword lifted in the air, sometimes with the sun or a bright light shining down on him from behind his head.Â
Here are a few examples:Â
âArchangel Michael punishing sinnersâ by unknown Austrian artist (1700s)
âSaint Michael Archangelâ by unknown artist (1490s)Â
So who is the Archangel Michael?Â
First of all in the hierarchy of angels, Archangels are those who are at the very top. The title comes from the Greek words âarcheâ which means prince, and âangelosâ which means messenger and they fulfill a number of important purposes. I think which angels are considered an archangel is debated based on holy scriptures between the Abrahambic religions (Judaism, Christianity, Islam) however because the paintings above were produced by those who were of Christian and Catholic faith, I will focus on looking at the Bible. In the Bible, Micheal is the only angel who is explicitly labelled as an Archangel. He is an angel of supreme power and the leader of Godâs army.Â
Based on the information I found online and from my own knowledge, the Archangel Micheal had four main responsibilities based on what is found in the Bible and in Christian tradition:Â
Combat Satan.
Escort the faithful to heaven at their hour of death.
Be a champion of all Christians, and the Church itself.
Call men from life on Earth to their heavenly judgement.
For this next portion, Iâm going to try my best to show how they connect back to Hawks.Â
First, the Archangel Michael is the enemy of Satan.Â
In the Biblical âend timesâ which is depicted in the book of Revelations, it is written that Archangel Micheal will lead Godâs army into a final battle against Satan and his fallen angels and be victorious.Â
A heroâs enemy is a villain and the villainâs enemy is a hero. This current war between the heroes and the Paranormal Liberation Front is happening largely due to Hawksâ role in infiltrating the PLF and the information he gathered. Itâs a great clash between the two major forces BNHA society deems as âgoodâ and âevil.â Although Hawks may have not led the heroes into battle but he played a major role in starting it. We have yet to reach the outcome of the war.Â
Second, he comes at the hour of death and presents a last chance at salvation.
During a period of time before someone dies, the Archangel Michael descends to those who havenât yet connected to God and gives them a last chance at salvation before their time to decide runs out. He gives them one more chance to essentially redeem themself before passing. After the individual dies, Micheal and other angels escort those who are saved to heaven.Â
In chapter 264, Hawks says that he believes that Twice/Jin is a good person and offers him a chance to leave quietly and have the opportunity to have a fresh start in life, telling him that heâd even help him. Very simply put, from Hawksâ point of view, this is a ticket out, a chance to be âsaved.â Twice chooses to fight for his friends and the LoV instead and dies by Hawksâ hand shortly after Dabi comes to intervene.Â
Third, he is the Guardian of the Church.
His name, Michael, means âone who is like God.â Throughout early Church history, he has been called the âchief of Israelâ and the âPrince of all angels.â One of his major responsibilities is to protect the People of God. To protect the Church, Michael leads angel armies into battle against its enemy, Satan and his fallen angels.Â
This one might be kind of a stretch but I think you can connect Hawksâ position as the Hero Public Safety Commissionâs tool to this role. He is one of the Commissionâs valuable weapons, and they will utilize him in order to achieve a certain outcome. Hawks views himself as someone who has the responsibility of protecting others. In this case, his infiltration mission forced him to bear the weight of the safety of Japanâs population on his shoulders. As a hero he had a duty to protect and save.
Fourth, he weighs peopleâs merits on Judgement Day.Â
(I could not find the title, artist or year for this painting.)
In the Christian religion, the Day of Judgement, is the day in the future when all people who are living or who have ever lived will be judged by God. In the Bible, the Archangel Michael helps measure peopleâs good and bad deeds on Judgement Day. In art, he is also often depicted holding scales and people often describe them as the âscales of justice.â Going back to the war during the âEnd of Timesâ that the Book of Revelations talks about, the weapon that Michael uses to defeat the enemy is often described throughout Christian history and tradition as âthe sword of justice.âÂ
The subject of Twiceâs death is a touchy subject and I donât have the ability to carefully word what I want to convey but harshly written, based on the situation that Hawks was put in and after assessing the possible impact/outcomes of Twiceâs role in future events, he makes the decision to kill Twice. He acknowledges Twice to be a âgood personâ but in that moment he judges him based on where his loyalties might lie and on his past/history. Hawks kills Twice using one of his blade-like feathers that he fights with like a sword. Another interesting thing to note is that the sub-heading of Vol. 27 is âOneâs Justice.âÂ
In ConclusionÂ
The event portrayed in these paintings depicts a major clash between God and Satan, and ultimately what is good and evil. In the Bible, there is no gray area, only black and white. So if we take this into consideration, is Horikoshi saying that Hawks is the righteous, holy hero and that Twice is the evil, morally upside down villain? No.Â
If Horikoshi indeed was influenced by these paintings of the Archangel Michael and his enemies, I do not think heâs portraying the black and white themes the good triumphs evil message it boldly gives off.Â
In their post, cutiesableye points out that âIn comics, a hero at the bottom and a villain at the top mean the hero is losing and conversely, a hero at the top and a villain at the bottom means the hero wins.â On the cover, Hawks is depicted at the top and Twice is depicted at the bottom. Then they ask an interesting question: âBut who is the hero here?" Iâd think that someone with no context of the story would find the cover to be somewhat ambiguous. Cutiesableye has a lot more great analysis and interpretation about the cover and especially on Hawksâ and Twiceâs facial expressions and body language so I highly encourage you to go read their post if you havenât done so already.
Anyways, back to the question: âBut who is the hero here?âÂ
Well on this manga page, Hawks looks more like the villain than Twice does. I think that grayness is what Horikoshi was going for. Both Hawks and Twice are gray characters. That is why so many people have their own strong opinions and interpretation about what happened between Hawks and Twice. Neither of them can be labelled comfortably as âgoodâ or âevilâ or in general, âheroâ or villain,â and I think that is the point. Iâm not going to go in depth about their character and morals but simply stated, Hawks is a hero who now has blood on his hands because he believed that the decision he made would save more lives and Twice was someone who was further categorized as a villain because he found community and family with the League of Villains and later died trying to defend them. However this grayness does not excuse any crimes that were committed on either side. It just makes the conversation more complex.
Another way you can portray this is that Hawks is not an angel and Twice is not Satan or a demon. Like you and me, Hawks and Twice are both human. BNHA is a story about humans and we are not perfect. Although we can show the best and worst in humanity, we can be very gray characters as well. On the surface level, you can say that the heroes represent the âgoodâ side and the villains represent the âevilâ side, however if you take a closer look that is not the case. Itâs more complicated than that. Through the current (Paranormal Liberation War) arc, Horikoshi is really exposing the gray areas that lie between the black and white.Â

Hiii me again, cause I love your Baby Buck stories.... What about Buck having nightmares, and Athena babysitting him cause Mama Thea and Baby Buck melts everyone's heart â¤ď¸
Thank you so much! I hope you enjoy!
TW: implied child abuse
Before Bobby knocks on the door, he crouches down in front of his son. Evan tips his head to the side expectantly. âListen to me, bud. If at any point you are overwhelmed or uncomfortable, all you have to do is tug on my sleeve and weâll go, okay?âÂ
Evan nods and Bobby affectionately ruffles his hair. He stands and knocks three times on the door. It swings open after a few seconds and Athena smiles at the two of them. Sheâs dressed a little nicer than normal, but they both agreed that his dinner wonât be anything fancy. âCome on in,â she steps aside and allows them to walk past her. âDinnerâll be ready in five.âÂ
âSounds good,â Bobby responds. He keeps a hand on Evanâs shoulder as they walk down into the living room, Athena trailing behind them. May and Harry are sitting on the couch, they stand when they see Bobby and Evan. May smiles at Evan while Harry looks at him curiously. Evan looks up at both of them nervously. Bobby has met Athenaâs kids a handful of times before, but this is the first time their kids are meeting each other.Â
Before deciding on this dinner, Bobby and Athena had a long talk about the future, their future. Since they both have kids it was an especially important discussion. Their decision at the end was not to make any more concrete decisions until their kids meet. If for whatever reason they donât get along, Bobby knows he might have to rethink some things. Because Evan is the most important person in his life and he doesnât want to force the boy into something he doesnât want or would be comfortable with.Â
May smiles at Evan and gives him a wave, âHey, Evan. Iâm May and this is Harry,â she nods to her brother. Evan returns the wave shyly, hiding a little behind Bobbyâs legs. âItâs nice to finally meet you.âÂ
âYou too,â Evanâs voice is quiet and Bobby knows itâs because he understands how important tonight is. He wishes Evan didnât have to worry so much.Â
âYouâre dadâs a firefighter, thatâs so cool!â Harry exclaims. âHave you ever been in a firetruck?âÂ
Evan nods, âYeah.âÂ
Harry groans, âYouâre so lucky, mom says that I canât ride in her police car.âÂ
âNot unless youâve committed a crime,â Athena laughs and ruffles her sonâs hair. The oven beeps in the kitchen and she touches Bobbyâs shoulder as she walks past him. Bobby watches on as Evan walks over to Harry and the two strike up a conversation.Â
May walks over to him and says, âYou donât need to be so worried. Evan seems really sweet.âÂ
Bobby smiles at her, âI know, itâs just nerve-wracking. This is the first time my son is meeting my partnerâs family, I think Iâm allowed to be worried.âÂ
âDinner, everybody!â Athena calls from the kitchen, interrupting whatever May had been about to say. Harry and May walk briskly to the dining table while Evan walks up to Bobby, sticking close to his side as they walk towards the dining table
Bobby gets Evan settled between him and Harry and helps him fill up his plate with the dishes they pass around. Once everyoneâs plates are filled, all five of them take hands and bow their heads.
After they pray and begin to dig in, Athena looks over and Evan with a smile, âHowâs school been for you, Evan? You transferred to a school in the city, right?.âÂ
Evan nods, âYeah.â After Evanâs school burned down, Bobby transferred him to Harryâs school which is also helpfully closer to the fire station. He doubts that Harry and Evan have had much of a chance to interact since theyâre in different grades. âUm, itâs been good,â he looks nervously up at Bobby who nods encouragingly for him to continue. âWe went on a field trip to the museum last week.âÂ
May smiles, âI remember going there when I was in elementary school. Did you get to go into the butterfly room?âÂ
Evan nods excitedly, âThat was my favorite part! It was really hot in there but there were so many different colored butterflies.âÂ
âMy favorite part is the dinosaurs,â Harry says. âThe one with all the spikes is my favorite.âÂ
Evan shakes his head with a little laugh, âThose are too scary.â As the three kids discuss the museum and their favorite exhibits and memories from school trips, Athena and Bobby share a smile across the table. He takes her hand and squeezes lightly.
After dinner, once all the dishes and in the dishwasher, Harry takes Evanâs hand and the two boys nearly run to Harryâs room, talking and laughing. Bobby feels a swell of pride in his chest. Athena sits down next to him on the couch as May departs to her bedroom as well. Bobby smiles at her, âThis went well.âÂ
âYeah, better than I could have expected,â Athena leans against his shoulder. âDoes this mean another long talk is on the horizon?âÂ
Bobby chuckles, âI guess so. We can wait a little bit though.âÂ
Athena hums contentedly and links their fingers together, Bobby resting his cheek against the top of her head.
âDo you think you could watch Evan on Tuesday night?â Bobby asks after a moment of silence. âI have an overnight shift and I donât really want to leave him with his babysitter.âÂ
âOf course,â Athena agrees. âIâd love to. Michealâs got the kids that night so I can come over to your apartment.âÂ
âThank you,â Bobby says. âIâm sure heâll be happier with someone heâs more comfortable with.â He watches a smile spread over her face at that.
...
On Tuesday night, Evan is put to bed by Athena. She smiles softly at him and draws the covers up to his shoulders. It feels nice, Evan decides. She brushes a curl out of his face and reads him a chapter from his book.Â
âGoodnight, sweetheart,â Athena says as she leaves the room, clicking off his light. His room is illuminated only by the faint blue light from the nightlight across the room. Evan turns on his side, back facing the wall as he hugs Bunny and closes his eyes.
Evan dreams of people screaming at him, their faces tomato red in anger. He dreams of their harsh words and angry fists. He hears glass smashing and he can smell the thick scent of tobacco.Â
Evan jerks awake when someone touches his shoulder. He scrambles backward in panic, pressing his back into where the corner of his bed meets the corner of the wall. He wraps himself into a tight ball, knees up protectively against his chest. All he can hear is the echo of angry words and his hard breathing.Â
In the darkness, his eyes search his room, looking for anyone who could hurt him. Thereâs someone sitting on the edge of his bed. âDonât hurt me,â Evan whimpers. âI-Iâll be good, I promise.âÂ
The lamp clicks on and Evan can see the person sitting in front of him. His dadâs girlfriend. Athena. Sheâs looking at him with a deep frown. Her voice shifts through all the noise in his head, âIâm not going to hurt you, Evan. Youâre safe.âÂ
Evan shakes his head, âD-Daddy?â He can help, he knows heâs safe with Bobby.Â
Athena sighs, âHeâs at work, Evan. I canât call him right now. Iâm sorry, sweetheart. Is there anything I can do?â
Evan squeezes Bunny even tighter and shakes his head. He wants a hug, to be held in someoneâs arms and know heâs safe, but he canât ask for that. He canât.Â
âAre you sure, baby?â Athena asks. âDo you want a glass of water?â
Evan shakes his head. He takes deep breaths just like his dad and his therapist taught him.
Then before he can help himself, he crawls to Athena and worms his way into her arms. He rests his head on her shoulder and waits with a pounding heart for her to shove him away, but she doesnât. Instead, her arms curl around him, squeezing just the right amount. He cries softly into her shoulder and she gently runs her fingers through his curls.Â
âItâs okay, baby,â she tells him softly. âYouâre okay.âÂ
He lets her arms support him and protect him from his memories.Â
âYouâre safe,â Athena repeats over and over.Â
And he believes it. He knows that heâs safe with her, sheâs the first person besides his dad that heâs ever believed those words from.Â
Please reblog if you enjoyed! :)

election 2020 presidential candidate assessment
REPUBLICAN- Donald Trump/Micheal Pence: I noticed that a lot of Trumps achievements were focused on law enforcement, from granting funding towards police services, to passing orders to give law enforcement access to a surplus of equipment. This issue page also included two achievements by Trump stating that his administration is protecting the rights of ALL Americans. I agree with most of what Trumps administration is pushing for. But I think they need to focus less on giving the police so much power over citizens, and work more trying to trying to demolish the divide between citizens and law enforcement. And Trump has a couple accomplishments which stated to protect ALL Americans, such as him supporting students whose free speech rights have been under attack on university campuses. And the Department of Justice secured a guilty plea for the first case prosecuted under the Hate Crimes Prevention Act involving a victim targeted because of gender identity. I am grateful so see our president making these changes, but there needs to be more. He needs to address the systematic racism throughout departments and in the courts themselves. And reform criminal law, to push for absolutely no discrimination towards minorities. This issue page supported most of what was said on their party platform website, by stating the law enforcement is necessary and all the men and women deserve our support.Â
DEMOCRATIC- Joseph Biden/Kamala Harris: The first thing I noticed about this issue page, was that there were so many more topics addressed. And they were all not just stating Joe Bidens accomplishments, they were also explaining his plan for each and every issue. His plan is to strengthen Americans commitment to justice and reform our criminal justice system. Including reducing people incarcerated as well as crime. Rooting out the racial, gender, and income-based disparities in the system. And stating criminal system must be focused on redemption and rehabilitation and how nobody should profiteer off our justice system. I agree with everything this issue page has included on criminal justice reform. The excessive push towards demolishing systematic racism is one of the biggest things they addressed in this page. I think they should have included a bit on law enforcement, because it is a growing issue in todays society. Such as include how they are going to train, and educate police officers better. The one thing I do not agree with, is how they donât address the divide between the police force and citizens. The police are our protectors, and although there is systematic racism amongst the departments. Addressing how they would rid of that, as well as tighten the bond between citizens and police, in order for people to feel safe around police, instead of threatened is neccesary to include in their campaign.Â
GREEN- Howie Hawkins/Angela Walker: They have bullet-points of what they feel the need to address on this topic. Stating how police misconduct needs to be investigates, white racist terrorists should be prosecuted, end mass incarceration, decriminalize personal possession of hard drugs, and more. I agree with most of what this party is addressing. I really like how they stated how drug abuse should be treated as a health problem not a criminal problem. Because, yes it is against the law to buy and use hard drugs, many people are addicted and they need help and therapy in order to get better. But one thing I do not agree with, is to decriminalize the personal possession of hard drugs. Because of how addicting hard drugs can be, decriminalizing them will allow people to get addicted much easier. This issue pages supports their party platform website.Â
PEACE&FREEDOM- Gloria Riva/Sunil Freeman: Their main point was to end racism, police brutality and mass incarceration. Pay reparations to the African American community. I agree with what they are saying here, and do believe that the African American and Native American community need to be payed reparations. And to end mass incarceration of oppressed and all working class people. Fully prosecute all acts of police brutality and violence. This issue page supports what was on their political party website.Â
AMERICAN INDEPENDENT- Rocky Guerra/Kanye West: I contacted this candidate through email.
Dear Roque De La Fuente, The issue I am concerned about is social justice and criminal law reformation. I am concerned about this issue because of the extremely noticeable systematic racism in our police departments, as well as our system overall. And your website does not seem to have any plan to address this issue. I am currently a senior at Acalanes High School and I am researching this issue for my senior Government class. If you could please clarify your stance on this issue. Thank you for your time. Sincerely,Tate Huisingh
LIBERTARIAN-Jo Jorgenson/Jeremy Cohen: Really stresses the fact that US is not âthe land of the freeâ when we are the highest number of people imprisoned. And they state that one of the main reasons is the racist and destructive war on drugs. I definitely agree with their stance on this issue, but think they could have included more about the systematic racism throughout police departments, as well as the system overall. And most of their info supports what is on their political party website. Â

Why I Do Not Worship Gordon Gekko...but do agree with him  somewhat.
Something that has always fascinated me is how when you talk to people about Gordon Gekko from the movie âWall Streetâ he is generally held in high regard and sometimes as âan inspirationâ despite him being the villain of the film. It is important to note that the Gekko character embodied elements from many different former Wall Street titans like Dennis Levine, Micheal Milken ("Junk Bond King") and Ivan Boesky. These men all committed financial crimes and served short term sentences in jail with one paying a billion dollar fine and most being able to keep their wealth. These are men I do not admire and do not wish to be like one day.Â
With that being said let's talk about âgreed is goodâ speech.
youtube
In his speech, he states that âYou own the company. That's right -- you, the stockholderâ which I agree with. In theory, shareholders should reign supreme and should be able to fire and replace managers as they please, however, this is not the case in real life. In real life, shareholders do not exercise their power and take a âdaddy knows what is best for youâ approach when it comes to management. I wish more stockholder were more present in not just buying the stock but owning a piece of the company.  Now moving on to this line:
âGreed clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit. Greed, in all of its forms -- greed for life, for money, for love, knowledge -- has marked the upward surge of mankind.â
I agree with this to a certain extent. Without people desiring something better and not being satisfied with the hand they were dealt with and wanting a better life; who would push for innovation? Under this definition, I am greedy because admittedly I have an insatiable love for reading and knowledge and this can be seen as being greedy for knowledge. However, there is a limit to how far I would go for information, and even if I read every book in existence, I would still know relatively little because there is so much we do not know. Furthermore, if I took the time to know everything about every company apart from being impossible is neither preferable for me. In fact, investing opportunities frequently must be made with incomplete information, and it is this uncertainty that allows these special situations to be profitable. This is not an excuse for being imprudent as I will come up with a range of values for the intrinsic value, will operate within my circle of competence and will do my due diligence.Â
It is when there is no limit, and the goal is only to grow as much as possible as fast as possible without thinking of the consequences that greed takes a turn for the worse. When self-interest is being maximized without thought to the long term implications and the damage done to other people; greed is not good in fact it is highly destructive and addictive to the person infected with his/her own self. This is what happens to Gekko, and he faces the repercussions of his actions which in this case are him losing his son to drug addiction and jail time. In addition, hundreds lose their jobs.Â
youtube
I am a firm believer that one does not need a degree from an Ivey League School to be successful (at least my own definition of success). I reason that many value investors have been hugely successful without having a degree and prosper because they have the correct values (integrity) and emotional framework. Therefore I also agree with Gekko that âmost of these Havard MBA types do not add up to dog sh*tâ and that Wall Street engages in very sheeplike (herd) behaviour.Â
To be completely open, my own negative experience with some businessmen that have graduated from an Ivey League school and their attitude towards other people has contributed to this stance. I am sure there are plenty of graduates that are decent human beings and realize that just having a couple of bad experiences does not mean the whole lot is rotten. Which is why I would have disagreed is Gordon Gekko would have said âallâ instead of âmost.â Furthermore, many brilliant value investors like Seth Klarman and Charlie Munger have graduated from an Ivey League school/had higher education in addition to value investing teachers like Joel Greenblatt, Bruce Greenwald and Dr. George Athanassakos who have been instrumental to my learning via videos. This leads me to believe that it is not the fact that these students I had a negative experience with were extremely rude because they went to a particular school. They were rude because it was their character. Â To summarize my point, you do not need to go to Havard to be successful, and Havard does not turn you a douche either.Â
Mr. Gekko, a value investor? (His comeback)
One scene in the sequel to Wall Street "Money never sleepsâ was the fact that Gordon Gekko invests after the housing bubble collapses and with his 100 million dollars grows immensely. This is similar to many value investors having funds in cash as to not incur opportunity cost which allows them to be ready to buy up bargains while they are still on sale. This is a technique employed by many value investors and one I hope to apply one day. Keep in mind I do not approve of the way Mr. Gekko got his hands on the 100 million in the first place. (Stealing from his family)
To summarize Gordon Gekko is a contrarian and does apply many value investing techniques. Despite this, he is no hero of mine. Manipulating your own family, insider trading and only caring about maximizing your own money short term is not the type of investor I want to be. Keep in mind I am not against activist investors; just activist investors that only see the effect there actions will have on the next quarter result and do not care about the impact there actions will have on the company and the individuals within that company 10 years from now. If only the Gordon Gekkoâs of the world knew that you could make more money with integrity by simply allowing compound interest to work its magic over time.Â

So like Iâm really tired of seeing this in the McReyes tag, and the last time I talked about this, I was largely ignored. So allow me to drop some knowledge your way. Now before I begin, I would like to say that I am a McReyes shipper. I ship these two dorks together. Iâm bringing this up because I am sick and tired of being basically told that Iâm stupid, wrong, or gross for having a simple headcanon.Â
Please stop saying that the headcanon about McCree joining Blackwatch at 17 is wrong/stupid/impossible/not canon. It 100% is possible and can be supported by canon evidence. I headcanon that McCree joined at 17 because of a lot of things, but the biggest evidence we have is this photo:
Now before anyone says anything, please allow me to go on further. This photo was a big topic in the Overwatch community after itâs release, and for good reason. It was the first real confirmation of pre-fall ages we got. But it was also a huge source for antis to use as âevidenceâ against many ships. It was used against me a few times as well.
I actually went digging because every time I asked for proof of the ages in this photo, I wouldnât get anything! So this is me, providing that proof that led people to headcanon that McCree was 17 when joining Blackwatch. This in no way condones this as use for anti behavior, simply me dishing out sources that many people have been asking for, but never actually got, much like I did.
At the SDCC Ana Panel in 2016 (X and X), the photo was claimed to have been taken 20 years ago. Making McCree 17 in that photo. It was also further confirmed when Micheal Chu presented at GDC saying that Pharah was around 11-12 years old at the time the photo was taken, making both McCree and Mercy around 16 to 17 years old going by the math (Pharah is canonly 5 years younger than Mercy and McCree) And that McCree was newly recruited to Blackwatch. The discussion begins at 0:50:54 if youâd rather jump to it than watch the entire thing, however the discussion itself is very interesting, especially about story telling and character creation and development, because you can get an idea of why the canon timeline is so screwy.
However, with that being said, even Micheal Chu stated at the GDC panel that mistakes were made, (particularly mentioning Torbjorn in the photo) and that not everything is 100% concrete right now. Overwatchâs canon is subject to change at times, even after releasing information. One example was McCreeâs age. In the Recall short, his age was stated to be 38, then was changed to 37:
(which is why I want to take my frustration out by strangling Overwatch writers because a lot of the discourse could have been avoided if they JUST STUCK TO 38)
So until we actually get McCreeâs full story of how he was recruited word for fucking word, all of what I just said is up for debate and interpretation.
A lot of people interpreted his age to be 17 for many reasons. Antis probably did in order to state that McReyes (and other ships like Mc76 and McAna) is a pedo ship. However many people within the McReyes fandom (MYSELF INCLUDED) also headcanon that he was 17 as well, and weâve gotten pretty damning evidence to make that interpretation. Itâs not far fetched that gangs and terrorist groups recruit people at young ages to better manipulate them, and itâs definitely not far fetched to believe that McCree could have been charged as an adult for the crimes that he committed if he was indeed still a minor (his bio states that he already made a name for himself in Deadlock and if his age at recruitment was 17, then you know he did some pretty terrible things).
tl:dr?Â
What I am saying is that Iâm sorry that antis donât know how to link facts like I can apparently, and that I had to be the one to do it, a McReyes shipper. People are free to interpret canon as they see fit, but the point of this whole discussion was that people need to stop calling other people stupid or wrong for headcanoning something different than you. Canon is up for interpretation and sometimes that interpretation doesnât always have to rely on canon. Sometimes itâs just a fun idea people have and want to explore that idea more. But in this case, there was evidence to support that headcanon.
Please stop trying to tell people that theyâre wrong for headcanoning this, because the opposite could in fact be very true. Stop trying to make your headcanon seem like itâs actually canon when itâs not. Stop trying to make up a defense for yourself because you donât want antis coming at you. Youâre hurting people within your own fandom by doing this even if it wasnât intentional, and Iâm fucking sick of it.Â

Wednesday round-up
Today the Supreme Court will wrap up its oral arguments for October Term 2019 by hearing another set of high-profile cases that could have implications for the upcoming presidential election: Chiafalo v. Washington and Colorado Department of State v. Baca, which ask whether the Constitution forbids a state from requiring its presidential electors to follow the stateâs popular vote when casting their electoral college ballots. Amy Howe previewed the cases for this blog, in a post that first appeared at Howe on the Court. Gabrielle Kanter and Joseph Grosser preview Chiafalo at Cornell Law Schoolâs Legal Information Institute; Cornellâs preview of Baca comes from Kathryn Adamson and Yuexin Angela Zhu.
For USA Today, Richard Wolf reports that â[t]he justices, customarily allergic to politics, appear on track to decide a threshold question that haunts the way presidents and vice presidents are chosen: Must the men and women chosen on Election Day to cast ballots for the winner of their stateâs popular vote keep their pledge? Or can they go rogue?â Nina Totenberg reports at NPR that â[t]he question before the Supreme Court on Wednesday is whether the states have the power to remove or fine ⌠so-called faithless electors.â At Education Weekâs School Law Blog, Mark Walsh talks to high-school government teacher Micheal Baca, whose âown drama-filled experience as an elector goes before the U.S. Supreme Court [today], along with cases involving other electors in Colorado and Washington state who were removed as electors or punished for not casting their ballots in keeping with the popular vote in their states.â At Quartz, Ephrat Livni calls it âa miracle that any electoral college voter does as told, frankly, and that elections havenât been more chaotic.â In an op-ed for The Washington Post (subscription required), Bret Chiafalo and others argue that presidential electors âshould be allowed the âvoteâ the Framers of our Constitution gave us, one based on our honor and discretion.â
Ronn Blitzer and Bill Mears report at Fox News that â[t]he Supreme Court waded uneasily Tuesday into politically-charged fights over executive accountability as justices held oral arguments in cases dealing with subpoenas of President Trumpâs personal tax and financial records.â Amy Howe analyzes yesterdayâs arguments in Trump v. Mazars and Trump v. Vance, which involve the presidentâs efforts to shield his financial records from subpoenas issued to his accountant and lenders by three congressional committees and a New York grand jury, for this blog, in a post that first appeared at Howe on the Court. For The New York Times, Adam Liptak reports that â[a] majority of the justices appeared skeptical of Mr. Trumpâs argument, in response to a subpoena from the Manhattan district attorney, [Cyrus Vance,] that he was absolutely immune from criminal investigation while he remained in office[, b]ut the court seemed more receptive to Mr. Trumpâs argument that the three House committees had asked for too much information for reasons unrelated to their legislative responsibilities.â At The Washington Free Beacon, Kevin Daley reports that âChief Justice John Roberts appeared to hold the deciding vote in the House case and seemed dubious of arguments from both sides[;] The justices seemed less troubled by the Vance subpoena but pressed attorneys about what threshold the DA should clear to obtain Trumpâs records.â At Bloomberg, Greg Stohr and David McLaughlin report that â[k]ey justices explored possible middle groundâ during the arguments. According to Jess Bravin and Brent Kendall at The Wall Street Journal (subscription required), â[t]he justices expressed concerns reaching beyond the Trump era, asking how their decision might shape presidential, legislative and law-enforcement powers far into the future.â Additional coverage of the argument comes from Ephrat Livni at Quartz, Nina Totenberg at NPR and Robert Barnes and Ann Marimow for The Washington Post.
In an op-ed at the National Catholic Register, Helen Alvare worries that although âthe two Catholic schoolsâ in Our Lady of Guadalupe School v. Morrissey-Berru, a case argued on Monday that involves the scope of the âministerial exceptionâ to federal employment discrimination laws, âmerit and will likely obtain a (possibly narrow) victory, the written decision ⌠might not bode well for future cases involving religious institutionsâ employees other than religion teachers.â At Slate, Mark Joseph Stern writes that â[b]y the end of Mondayâs arguments, it seems likely that the five conservatives will expand the ministerial exception, possibly to anyone labeled a âministerâ by their bossâ; â[t]he liberals, meanwhile, seemed to regret unleashing this doctrine in 2012 with no power to rein it in.â At Reasonâs Volokh Conspiracy blog, James Phillips suggests that âthe back-and-forth between the Justices and the attorneys exposed three interconnected fallacies that appears to be driving much of the conversation in the cases.â
Ronald Mann analyzes Mondayâs argument in McGirt v. Oklahoma, which asks whether Oklahoma had jurisdiction to prosecute crimes committed by an Indian within the historical boundaries of the Creek reservation in eastern Oklahoma, for this blog. For The Oklahoman (via How Appealing), Chris Casteel reports that the justices âlooked for clear answers â and maybe even a compromise â on whether Congress officially terminated the Muscogee (Creek) Nationâs reservation at Oklahoma statehood.â At The New Republic, Nick Martin maintains that âthe public nature of the questioning ⌠expose[d] how unfamiliar the majority of the justices are with Indian law and basic history.âÂ
Briefly:
For The Detroit News, Melissa Nann Burke reports that â[t]he Michigan woman at the center of a high-profile transgender rights case pending before the U.S. Supreme Court has died, her family said.â
In an op-ed for The Washington Times, Jeanne Mancini weighs in on USAID v. Alliance for Open Society, a First Amendment challenge to the enforcement against overseas groups of a requirement that recipients of federal funds to fight HIV/AIDS abroad have a policy opposing prostitution and sex trafficking, arguing that a ruling âthat First Amendment free speech rights do extend to overseas NGOsâ âwould result in making it impossible to deny pro-abortion NGOs foreign assistance without violating their free speech ârights.ââ
Charles Lane, in an op-ed for The Washington Post (subscription required), writes that â[p]ublic confidence in the Supreme Court hinges on judicial nonpartisanship, actual and perceived,â giving us âa reason to applaud the opinions Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Elena Kagan, liberal Democratic appointees both, wrote for the court last week,â which delivered ârulings uncongenial to what many Democrats and progressives might have preferred.â
At Vox, Ian Millhiser observes that in a concurrence last week in United States v. Sineneng-Smith, âJustice Clarence Thomas suggested that a major First Amendment doctrine should be abandoned, and that the right to free speech be significantly shrunk in the process.â
At The Atlantic, Garrett Epps asks Lyle Denniston, a storied Supreme Court reporter, why Denniston âdespisesâ the Supreme Courtâs new telephonic-argument format.
At Quartz, Ephrat Livni offers almost 13 ways of looking at Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, illustrated by court artist Art Lien.
We rely on our readers to send us links for our round-up. If you have or know of a recent (published in the last two or three days) article, post, podcast or op-ed relating to the Supreme Court that youâd like us to consider for inclusion in the round-up, please send it to roundup [at] scotusblog.com. Thank you!
