The Belgian cyclist Michael Goolaerts, 23 years old, died in hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest during Sunday’s Paris-Roubaix race back in 2018. His big dream: Tour de France 2020

Goolaerts was taken to a hospital after receiving CPR treatment on the side of the road after a crash.

[RIP] Michael Goolaerts ne se relève pas des pavés du Paris-Roubaix à l’âge de 23 ans. Coureur cycliste belge, champion junior du contre-la-montre de la province d’Anvers, Michael devient professionnel en 2017 et est désigné en 2018 « poisson-pilote » de son équipe. Michael a du coeur mais pas au point de pouvoir finir la traversée des hauts de France, et ce, malgré toutes les aides médicales qu’il a pu recevoir. Adieu Michael.

  A Veranda’s Willems Crelan csapatának belga kerékpárosa, Michael Goolaerts belehalt sérüléseibe, miután vasárnap hatalmasat bukott a a Paris–Roubaix országúti kerékpárosok egynapos klasszikus versenyén.

  A 23 éves belga kerékpáros egy macskaköves szakaszon esett el 148 kilométerrel a cél előtt. A helyszínen újraélesztették, majd mentőhelikopterrel a Lille-i kórházba szállították, ahol késő este családja és szerettei körében elhunyt.

  A halálesetre a Paris–Roubaix kerékpárverseny szervezője, Christian Prudhomme is reagált. „Egy erős sportbéli érzelmekkel teli nap van mögöttünk, de ha egy ilyen szomorú dolog történik, akkor a versenyből származó öröm a háttérbe szorul. Gondolatban Michael családjával vagyunk” – írta Prudhomme a sajtóhírében.

It’s been a few days, but we can’t get the dust from Paris-Roubaix out of our heads and hearts. The guys rode brilliantly.  Though two in the top 10 wasn’t the end-all goal for our classics season — our aims were a bit higher — to see the bright pink of the team at the sharp end of Paris-Roubaix was enthralling.

But we exit the cobbled season, ultimately, with heavy hearts. The loss of Michael Goolaerts is arresting and tragic, and we send our love to the young Belgian’s friends, family, and teammates at Veranda’s Willems-Crelan. We leave you with images from the season’s most brutal of races — one that reminds us that however harsh the racing, we are all one family on the road.

Michael Goolaerts est décédé dimanche sur les routes du Paris-Roubaix

Aux alentours de 14h, dimanche, Michael Goolaerts fait un tour droit et chute à l’arrière du peloton dans un secteur pavé. Le jeune coureur de 23 ans vient d’être victime d’un arrêt cardiaque sur son vélo. L’équipe médicale de la course arrive le plus vite possible à son chevet et réussi à le réanimer et à l’héliporter jusqu’à l’hôpital de Lille, dans un état critique.

C’est à 22h40 que son équipe, Vérandas Willems-Crélan, annonce son décès via twitter. Le monde du cyclisme est triste, choqué et abasourdi de la mort si prématurée d’un aussi jeune coureur prometteur.

En marge de cet événement tragique, c’est le slovaque Peter Sagan qui a remporté l’épreuve.

Investigation launched into Paris-Roubaix rider's death

PARIS (AP) — French judicial officials launched an investigation Monday into the death of Belgian rider Michael Goolaerts during the Paris-Roubaix cycling race.

Goolaerts died Sunday after collapsing during the one-day classic on cobblestones in northern France.

Cambrai prosecutor Remi Schwartz told The Associated Press that an autopsy will be performed on Goolaerts’ body in the coming days to determine the exact cause of death.

The 23-year-old Belgian died at a hospital in Lille, where he had been taken by helicopter from the race. Organizers said in a medical statement that he suffered a cardio-respiratory arrest.

Goolaerts had been airlifted to the hospital after collapsing about 150 kilometers (93 miles) from the finish in the second of the 29 cobblestone sectors of the race known as “The Hell of the North.” No images of the incident were available but TV footage of the race showed Goolaerts lying unresponsive on the side of the road as the peloton passed him. He was then attended to by a medical team and appeared to receive CPR.

According to Schwartz, early investigation results indicate that Goolaerts might have fallen off his bike because of a cardiac episode, and that it was not the crash that led to his death.

“But at this stage we don’t have any absolute certainty,” he said. “There is no obvious explanation, nor an obvious traumatism as the cause (of his death).”

Goolaerts was in his fourth year with the Veranda’s Willems-Crelan team. He rode in support of cyclo-cross world champion Wout van Aert of Belgium at Paris-Roubaix. His most significant result this season was 20th at Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne.

Goolaerts’ death came two years after Belgian cyclist Daan Myngheer died following a heart attack during the Criterium International race in Corsica. Another Belgian cyclist, Antoine Demoitie, died the same year following a crash in the Gent-Wevelgem race.
