Wonka (2023)
Wonka practically steps onto the stage and declares itself a new favorite. When the film was announced, it was met with skepticism. We’ve already had two adaptations of Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Going back to see how the book’s most memorable character became who he is felt like a desperate attempt to cram more chocolate down an already-filled stomach. Here’s what the naysayers should’ve paid attention to, however: writer/director Paul King. I know you loved Paddington and its sequel, Paddington 2. Everything that made those films great – except for the titular bear – is present here, along with catchy musical numbers. This is a lovingly assembled film the whole family will eat up.
After an extended journey around the world gathering the rarest ingredients and learning everything there is to know about sweets, Willy Wonka (Timothée Chalamet) dreams of establishing his own chocolate shop. Unfortunately, his initial trip to the Galéries Gourmet sees him pushed out by the “Chocolate Cartel”. Shortly after, he’s swindled out of his savings and forced into indentured servitude by Mrs. Scrubbit (Olivia Colman) and her co-worker, Bleacher (Tom Davis). He’ll be doing laundry for the next twenty-five years unless he can settle his debts. The only way to do that is to become the chocolatier he's always dreamed of becoming.
Wonka has been called a “companion piece” to 1971’s Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory but come on. It's a prequel. Two songs are reprised/expanded upon, several visual cues are ported over and Chalamet’s portrayal of the titular character is reminiscent of Gene Wilder’s. If you were to watch the films back-to-back, however, you would spot certain inconsistencies. Some, there’s no way you could’ve worked around, such as the character Hugh Grant plays. I won’t spoil what his part in the film is (even though he is on the poster) but if you were to watch this movie before the original, he would give away one of the latter’s biggest surprises. There’s also an aspect of Wonka’s character that’s a bit off. I personally think people label WW&tCF as being much darker and scarier than it is but you can understand why people would call it frightening, or "a gateway to children’s horror". This film has no cynicism or darkness in it whatsoever. It’s one of the reasons why it works so well but if this film is indeed a prequel, that's an inconsistency.
With those minor complaints out of the way, let’s talk about the many ways Wonka succeeds. First, the cast and tone. There are many villains in this movie. Keegan-Michael Key plays the corrupt, chocolate-addicted Chief-of-Police. Paterson Joseph is Arthur Slugworth, the leader of the Chocolate Cartel. He, along with his cohorts Gerald Prodnose (Matt Lucas) and Felix Fickelgruber (Mathew Baynton) are not above sending innocent people to be enslaved or even murdered. Then, there’s the extended Cartel, which includes a small, but funny role for Rowan Atkinson. Finally, the combo of Mrs. Scrubitt's & Bleacher. On paper, these characters are quite sinister - even children are being enslaved by Scrubitt and Bleacher. Despite that, you kind of… like them. They're all delightfully ridiculous and quirky. You can tell the performers are having a blast hamming it up – in the best way. They’re all evil. They all love being evil. You love seeing them do their thing.
Nearly everyone we meet is more eccentric than anyone in real life could ever be - including the other "inmates" at Scrubbit's boarding house (played by Jim Carter, Natasha Rothwell, Rich Fulcher and Rakhee Thakrar), except for the friend Wonka makes once all his money is stolen: an orphan named Noodle (Calah Lane). She’s in a worse spot than anyone else, which makes her apprehensive and cynical but also most receptive to the idea of hope once Wonka gets going. You can bet that by the end, all of the heroes will have played an important part in the story, even if their skills seem to make them kind of useless. Seeing how they fit in the big picture is part of the fun.
Between the big laughs and musical numbers, we get scenes of magic and wonder - the kind you can only in worlds where people spontaneously burst into dance. There's something so earnest about Wonka. It knows exactly what it wants to be and isn't afraid of going for it. Paul King takes single gags and turns them into characters for the sake of a big punchline at the end. You can tell from the way the story flows that's going to be the case and there's almost a sense of suspense as you wonder what's going to happen with that. Wonka pokies fun at itself more than once but is willing to be serious when the scene calls for it. That's what makes it, why it's a great prequel to Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
Wonka is the kind of movie I wish we’d see more often. You think back to the movies you used to see as a child and it feels like we used to get ones like this all the time but actually, we didn't. Movies like this one are rare, it's just that they're so much fun you never forget them and they get passed down from generation to generation so it feels like there's this large library you had before and haven't been able to add to. Push away any apprehension you might've had initially and you'll see. Wonka fits in with those childhood favorites. (November 22, 2024)

If there any blood/kin connection between Michael Crawford and Ben Crawford lmao love them both
Nope, just a random coincidence! There's been a few of those (the funniest being Derrick Davis and Kaitlyn Davis, who played the Phantom and Christine in the restaged US tour and who, despite having the same last name, are in no way related to one another).
There has been at least one parent-child casting in Phantom, though obviously not in the same cast: Mark Jacoby, who played the Phantom in the Chicago sit-down from 1990-1991 and on Broadway from 1991-1992, and his son Ben Jacoby, who played Raoul in the restaged US tour from 2013-2014. And there have been a few sibling connections as well, which you can read about here!
EDIT: @andrewlloydwebber added this:
Maya Hikasa (new West End Meg) is the daughter of Ayumi Hikasa (ballerina in the 90s West End cast)

if you’re hearing LIONHEARTED BY PORTER ROBINSON playing, you have to know JOSHUA BRADFORD (HE/THEY; DEMIMALE) is near by! the TWENTY-FOUR year old PHOTOGRAPHER has been in denver for, like, HIS ENTIRE LIFE. they’re known to be quite CRITICAL, but being CHARISMATIC seems to balance that out. or maybe it’s the fact that they resemble MICHAEL CIMINO. personally, i’d love to know more about them seeing as how they’ve got those DIFFERENT COLORED CREWNECKS, THE SOUND OF THE SHUTTER GOING OFF, AND CALLUSES ON FINGERS FROM PLAYING GUITAR vibes. and maybe i’ll get my chance if i hang out around the CHERRY CREEK DISTRICT long enough!

when it came to the bradford family, they were considered the perfect all american family. william a well known fashion photographer, who grew up with wealth but still made a name for himself. emma bradford, an attorney, who's story really inspired people that no matter where you come from you can still become someone. and the moment joshua was adopted, it was like he had the whole world at the palm of his hands. his parents encouraging him to do whatever his heart desired.
joshua's story could have been different though. the first five years of his life he was raised by an amazing woman, his birth mother, lucy davis. his father was never in the picture, and that was okay, because he had lucy. but one night after a shift at the night and dine, a storm was brewing. driving back home was more difficult than expected, and out of nowhere a truck came driving towards her, ending in disaster.
with no record of his father, and there not being a next of kin to take joshua, he was eventually placed with the bradfords, who fostered the young josh. and they had fallen in love with joshua, even when he was so quiet and timid to begin with, but once he felt comfortable, they love how thoughtful, creative and sweet he was. they knew that they wanted him, and they decided to adopt him.
growing up with the bradfords, he was coming to his own. he loved his parents, and he loved what they did, always interested in what they do, specifically with his father's photography. his creative side being shown more and more, it was clear where his interest lied. so his parents had gotten him his first camera at thirteen. and his love for photography grew, amongst the rest of the arts.
he had accomplished a lot in his quarter life. winning photo competitions, going to college, and graduating with a business and photography degree. and now, he wants help young artist fulfill their dreams just like he was fulfilling his own. but there was still one thing he wanted to do before he started it all, he wanted to find who his birth father is. the problem was, there was no information on him. and he felt like it was finding a needle in a haystack. but he wasn't going to give up.

a love so powerful: this is the person that joshua never saw coming. yes, he has been in relationships before, and has hooked up with others, but this man really was someone he fell for first. the thing was, did he even feel the same? he never got so flustered like this before. and josh really is stuck feeling like that one awkward teenager he once was.
you are my brother: can be someone he grew up with and they are inseparable or possible the bradford's birth child. either way, him and joshua have been attached to the hip, and whenever one is around, so is the other. so watch out, cause they might bring some chaos.
best friends for life: if there was one person josh confided in practically everything, it was always his best friend. she's the girl that he tended to gravitate around for years, they even shared their first kiss together, and tried the dating, but decided that being friends was the right move. she's the one he always cared what she thought.
from bully to friends: it's crazy how the jock and the art kid once to hate each other. tale as old as time. but growing up had changed them both. one night out together and they ended up having a good time. who would have thought these unlikely duo would be good friends.

FACE CLAIM: Charles Michael Davis
BIOGRAPHY
TRIGGER WARNING: Abuse, cruelty, murder, illness, drug use, alcohol use
Lincoln Moreau’s claim of being The First Progeny, a title he has proudly worn for most of his existence, is a hard one to dispute; he may not be the very first vampire to ever be sired from a member of the Original family, but he also very well may be, and he most certainly is amongst the first vampires to ever be created. What is known for certain, is that Lincoln was the very first vampire that Victor Morgrave ever turned, and the gift which was bestowed upon him is not one that he took for granted.
To understand why the man who would become Lincoln Moreau would embrace vampirism so vehemently, it is important to understand where he came from. The conditions that he’d been living in prior to the change had been less than ideal, though the less diplomatic would go as far as to say they were cruel. Things had started off well enough; he’d been adopted into a great house as a young boy, and loved by the father, who had taken him in off the street, at least as much as he loved the children who were of his bloodline, if not a little bit more so. But when the father passed away of illness and the eldest brother, who had always hated Lincoln and resented him for how much of his father’s affection he received, became the man of the house, Lincoln’s treatment underwent a dramatic shift. Though allowed to stay, he was forced to live in the stables with the horses, and made to carry out both the most physically demanding, and morally demeaning of tasks imaginable, whilst also suffering from terrible physical and verbal torment at the hands of the eldest sibling. Worst of all though, was the fact that he was forbidden from being social with the other siblings, whom he had been raised as kin with, and eventually, out of fear of their brother if they did not, they too turned cruel towards Lincoln. He was treated worse than should be allowable by one’s humanity, and year over year, as he lived a life without a single moment of pleasure, his rage, his bitterness, and his resentment grew; and he swore one day he would have his revenge.
What I failed to mention is that this supposed “great house” which Lincoln had once been welcomed into, but he was now basically a prisoner in, was located in the town of Raven’s Peak during the days of The Four Families, prior to the splitting of the stone which would change the world forever. And it was during this time that Lincoln first came into contact with the man who would go on to be one of the four original vampires, Victor Morgrave. Victor had been visiting the house to attend to some business with the eldest brother, when the brother brought him out to the stables to show him his favourite pastime; tormenting Lincoln. Even then, when Victor himself was a rather selfish and arrogant man, seeing the treatment of Lincoln stirred feelings of pity within him, and though he did not try to put a stop to the treatment that day, he never forgot about what the elder brother had done, nor the pain that Lincoln had suffered.
And so, when the all too familiar tale of the rock splitting the witches being changed unfolded, and Victor Morgrave now found himself to be a vampire, he remembered what Lincoln had gone through, and, driven by an instinct that he did not understand, he knew that to offer Lincoln his blood was to offer him a chance at not only liberation, but the revenge that he so greatly desired.
With his new power, Lincoln exacted his revenge upon the family that had made his life Hell on Earth for so many years. Then, with justice done, he found himself contemplating what to do next. He stayed in Raven’s Peak for a time, becoming the new master of the house that he had been thrown out of doors from as a young child. But as satisfying as this was, he soon found himself growing bored of the life that he had once desired to have more than anything, and filled with a desire to explore the world beyond Raven’s Peak, and see what it had to offer him.
As it turns out, the world beyond had more to offer him than he ever could have imagined was possible. For a man who had spent most of his life enduring unbearable abuse, to discover how many pleasures the world contained was an intoxicating experience, often times quite literally, and he found himself indulging in all of it, perhaps, on some level, trying to make up for lost time.
But as the years wore on and the truth of his eternal existence set in as being the reality he was now facing, Lincoln decided that the best thing he could do for himself was give himself some reprieve from the world; and the best thing he could do for the world was give it some reprieve from him. He never wanted the pleasure he derived from the world to wane or dwindle; he wanted to enjoy it all every bit as much for the rest of his eternal existence as he had the very first time. And so he instituted The Rule of 500, which decreed that every 500 years, he would lay down and sleep for a century, so that he would be able to awaken and find the world new and young and beautiful again.
Since then, the man who calls himself The First Progeny has built himself an empire. What began as a desire to invest in the ventures of people that he saw potential in, soon grew to become a full fledged investment business, which has had its hands and funds involved in helping to nurture some truly remarkable, not to mention many highly lucrative, companies, organizations, artists, and in one case, even a kingdom. What’s more, in cases where both loyalty and excellence are exhibited, Lincoln has bestowed the gift of immortality upon those whose interests align with his own; something which he considers to be the most sacred of investment that he can make in a person. With the fortune which he has accumulated, and the massive network of loyal partners that he’s sired for himself, there’s almost nothing that Lincoln can’t have if he wants it; and he wants it all. Though all should beware, that if you intend to make friends with Lincoln, don’t ever consider letting him down, and especially not betraying him; because Lincoln Moreau does not forgive those who disappoint him, and those who betray him? Well, let’s just put it this way: Lincoln’s entire life as a vampire has been ruled by the endless pursuit of pleasure, and nothing, absolutely nothing, brings him greater pleasure than exacting revenge on those who have betrayed or done wrong to him.
Now, Lincoln leaves behind what has been his home for the past two centuries, New Orleans, to return to Raven’s Peak for the first time since he left countless centuries ago. While he’s certain that being back will stir some memories that would be better buried deep, he can’t help but be curious to see how the place has changed in his time away, and he hopes that, perhaps, he can create some new, happier memories that will redefine what his birthplace as a vampire means within his mind.

Here’s to Complex Feelings
Jack Nelson x OC/Reader (Carmen Nelson) x Ada Thorne
SUMMARY: You and Jack Nelson married when you were 21, it was marriage of convince and safety. You, a queer woman, needed a beard and he needed a wife who he could trust and understood that he’d never be monogamous. Things get complicated when you both taken on Ada Thorne as a lover.
WARNINGS: none
A/N: Told through a series of time skips because I’ve really enjoyed how @zablife ‘s Little Harlot is told.
GIF CREDITS: Jack & Ada are by @retromafia / @peakywomen
– 1934 – London, England
“You’re Catholic, Mr. Shelby?” Jack’s voice echoed against the air and marble of the holy building, “I hoped by suggesting we meet in church it might make us both more cautious.” He explained that the way Catholics were treated in America angered him, made him the man, the monster he was today. Men like Thomas and Jack were just good men who did bad things to help their friends and family out of poverty.
Jack Nelson and Tommy Shelby paced around an empty London church, like two animals waiting for the other to pounce first. Both men believed themselves to be too honorable to move first. It was a lie they’d tell themselves to fall asleep at night, I am a good man and I am doing the right thing.
They spouted nonsense in the shadows of a God they only partially believed in. They doubted each other’s earnestness when it came to the business of Fascists. What did two working-class Catholics want a lunch with the fascists for? Each of them tried to figure the other out, the non-answers were getting on each other’s nerves so Tommy finally made a move, revealing some of his hand.
“I’ve done some research on you, Mr. Nelson,” Tommy began to say as he walked past Jack, taking the lead in both the conversation and their walk. “You seem to have a very close relationship with you wife,” Jack tensed at the mention of his wife, wondering what would follow, “You go to church together every Sunday, hold hands as you walk through the park. She’s here with you, in London, yet everywhere you go, Gina is on your arm.”
“What are you getting at, Mr. Shelby?” Jack asked, not liking that the conversation was lingering on his dearly beloved. “My wife came to London to enjoy herself and keep me company. She doesn’t need to be bored by the business.” He explained, “Gina wants to learn about politics and business and who am I to deny the ambition of a young woman. Plus, she wants to show me London. She had a wonderful time here with your cousin,” The American gangsters had learned a lot about Thomas from Michael Gray in the few years they had spent together. “Although I hear that her reception from the family was less than warm. Can you explain that, Mr. Shelby? It hurts my feelings that my sweet niece was not treated well. I have treated Michael very well. Our two families are kin now, yet you still hold me at an arm's length away, Mr. Shelby. I just hope that one day we can call each other Jack and Tommy, like old friends.” Jack waited for a response, but Tommy only continued on with his script, his monologue.
“Will you bring your wife to the meeting of like-minded individuals?” Fascists was the word Thomas avoided. He wanted to know if the elusive Mrs. Nelson was going to make an appearance, he had significant trouble tracking down information about her despite all of his connections in America. All he had was Carmen Nelson. Everyone’s silence had been bought by Jack. And judging by the way Jack paused every time her name was mentioned, she meant a great deal to him. “I’d like to meet her. I wonder if she knows of your…how many is it now” He made a show of looking up looking for a piece of parchment. “Ah yes, 5. Does she know about your five current mistresses
TARA H. DONE
MARGRETTE MCMAHON
ANNIE FLINT
MABEL CAHILL
IRENE DAVIS
Doesn’t the bible condone cheating and premarital sex, Mr. Nelson? I think God would be very displeased with you for sending all those young women to hell.”
Jack chuckled, his laugh loundened by the empty building, echoing into the shadows. “It would be wise for you not to throw stones from glass houses, Mr. Shelby. You shouldn’t go sticking your nose where it doesn't belong.”
“Does Mrs. Nelson get the same privilege as you? Does she get to fuck men outside of her marriage?”
“No, Mr. Shelby she does not. Why are you curious? Are you asking because you’re interested?”
“I might be, I’d have to see her first. Just know that as a socalist, I am in full support of sharing.”
“So then why do you keep the company of Fascists, Mr. Shelby?” he was trying to get the conversation away from his wife and back to politics.
“I am a politician, I have friends on all sides of the political spectrum. What do you, a good working-class catholic man, want with the Fascists?”
“I want to know what they’re up to. What they’re planning. Mr. Roosevelt thinks that the British government is sympathetic and even fostering Fascist ideals.”
“You find their rise to power inevitable. Why get involved?”
Jack was sick of this round about talking. He wanted to get to the point, “I could ask you the same thing, Mr. Shelby. You work for Churchill, a man who undoubtedly hates this new political movement. Why would speak a Fascists rallies and befriend Mr. Oswald Mosely?” Thomas was about to answer when Jack cut him off. “ – Now before you lie to me in this house of God I would like to let you know that someone close to you has told me your true intentions. That you are double-crossing the IRA and Fascists. I would like to join you” Jack could feel the anger and confusion emanating from Tommy, “I know all of this because of Ada.” As soon as her name escaped his lips Tommy lunged at Jack.
“Liar. You keep my sister’s name out of your mouth.” Jack caught Tommy and held him close in a bear hug. The Peaky Blinder struggled to break free but it was no use, age and sleepless nights had weakened him.
“If you revisit your list of my lovers you will find that TARA H. DONE is an anagram for Ada Thorne. That is so long because it is not a list of my lovers but a list of mine AND my wife’s lovers. We keep most of them separate but your Ada is very special to us.” Tommy stopped squirming so Jack let him go, “You better be calm now because I’d hate to have to shoot that beautiful face of yours in a house of worship.”
Thomas Shelby ignored the joke and stares at the letters TARAHDONE….ADA THORNE. ‘Fuck.’ he thought to himself, how did he miss that? How did he not know that Ada was involved with this man…and his wife…. The information was too much to process and Tommy just stared down at the piece of paper in confusion.
“It’s a lot to take in, I know. My marriage Carmen is a blessed one. Not only is she my best friend but she knows that I will have my affairs and that she is free to have hers. All you need to know about her is that if you ever threaten her I will kill you. My wife will not be put in harm's way.” Jack didn’t take threats to his wife lightly. “As for why you haven’t seen her, she’s been visiting Ada and Karl. It’s been so long since she’s seen them.”
Jack genuflected before the altar and turned to leave. Tommy was still stuck in his tracks.
“You lying, Fuck–”
“Watch it Mr. Shelby, this is God’s house.” he smiled, pointing to the heavens. “And if you don’t believe me, go over to Ada’s house, you can meet my beautiful wife.” “Jack was almost out the door before he turned around and said, “That is if she isn’t in between your sister's legs at the moment.”
– 1915 — Boston, Massachusetts, USA
You met Jack Nelson for the first time when you were children. Long before his name meant anything at all. Before uttering it at any volume about whisper stroke fear into people’s hearts. Before crowds parted before him. Before he was a God amongst men and a hero to the American Catholics. Your families grew up close to each other in an a diverse immigrant neighborhood, you played together, worked together, and went to school together.
Now both 21, Jack had formed a powerful gang and several successful businesses with older brothers Diego and Gael. You hadn’t done much, mostly float from job to job. Right now you were a housekeeper for a senator.
Today, Tuesday was your day off, Jack had insisted on taking you to lunch in the new club that he owned. He wanted to catch up and get your opinion on the food. “Jack, this place looks wonderful,” you smiled looking around the club diner that would open in a few weeks. He pulled you in for a quick kiss on the cheek hello.
“Not as wonderful as you look, Doll,” he teased with a wide toothed grin. Jack Neslon knew that wouldn’t work on you but he tried anyway. The two of you sat down and food was brought out to you. Throughout the meal you continued to talk.
“So…” he looked around to make sure that the cook and server had gone into the back to the kitchen. “I broke things off with Emma…”
“Oh?” you sighed in confusion, “I thought that you were getting ready propose to her.”
“I was but…” he trailed off again, clearly ashamed or upset by that he was about say, “she was cheating on me and ran off with some other guy.” You wanted to point to him that he was also cheating on her with a slew of other women, but you didn’t need to. Your eyes said it for you. “Don’t look at me like that. Everyone knows that I am a man who can’t be tamed.” You rolled your eyes and brought a spoonful of soup to your mouth. “Are you seeing anyone, Carm? We always talk about my dating life what have you been up to?”
You liked it that way, no one asking about who you were seeing. “No, I’m not seeing anyone…I’m never seeing anyone.”
“Why?” Jack asked curiously, tilting his head. You couldn’t help buy laugh. You had been friends ofr twenty-one years and he never asked you why you didn’t date. He was always too busy talking about his own sex-life to ask about yours.
“Do I have to spell it out for your Jack? We’ve known each other for 21 years and in all that time have I ever talked about a man?...” You looked at him, waiting for some kind of response but all you got where his cloudy blue eyes staring back at you begin for an explanation. Now it was your turn to look around for the staff, paranoid of what might happen if someone overheard you. “I like women…”
Jack stared at you, unable to hide the shock on his face.
“Did you really no know?” you asked, eyes rolling, annoyed that he never even suspected. You two had been attached at the hip since you were five, and he never once thought to question why you didn’t like men. It was a secret that you kept well, but you thought that if anyone would have known it would have been him. Your anger filled the silenced of the room until Jack’s voice cut the tension.
“Well…I kind of always thought that you were waiting for me or something” he started laughing and soon you were joining him.
“No, I’m sitting at home all day like your broads, waiting for you to give them a call,” you teased.
“Really? Never? Come on, Carmen. You’re hurting my feelings here,” he pressed a hand to heart in pretend pain.
“Once when were 15 you let your hair get really long and I thought that was kind of cute,” you laughed, “but then you cut it all off.” Jack rolled his eyes and playfully tossed his napkin at you. It had been a long time since you laughed this hard.
“Why don’t you date women? It’s 1910s, the world is changing. You’ve been with me at parties, seen men with men and women with women.” It was true, in larger young people could be with whomever they wanted. Still though, you were nervous of what your family and the people at church might think.
You explained this to him and added, “I can’t…It’s better if I don’t. If worse comes to worse I’m sure there is a convent in need of some nuns.”
“Now that plants a very naughty image in my brain, Carmen.” His bold laugh could be heard throughout the building. “I just want you to know that you can let yourself be happy and go after the things that you want. I’ll keep you safe.”
You smiled, thankful for the kind of friendship you had with him. The two of you finished up your food and parted ways.
The next day, you were busy at work when one of your coworkers said that Jack Nelson was on the phone asking for you. Excitement and worry filled your body. Why was he calling you at work? Was he whisking you away to some party tonight or delivering bad news?
A warm smiled flashed across your face when you heard him say, “Hello Doll, I’ve got a great idea.”
“Yeah?” you ask.
“We should get married!”

Five of the weirdest Elvis portrayals (or incarnations) in film.
Michael St. Gerard in Hairspray. D: John Waters (1988). Tracy Turnblad (Ricki Lake) gets conked on the head in a vicious game of high-school dodgeball and when she wakes up she sees … Elvis. Okay his name is Link Larkin and it’s 1962 Baltimore, not Memphis but we know better (as did the producers who immediately cast Gerard in the short-lived Elvis TV series). Later they’re making out in a forbidden “Negro” club. “Oh Link, this is so romantic! I wish I was dark-skinned.” “Tracey our souls are black though our skin is white.”
Nicolas Cage in Wild at Heart. D: David Lynch (1990). Cage’s performances all have a little Elvis in them and as “Sailor Ripley” he leans into the King, helping Lynch delivers the Elvis movie of our most depraved fantasies. After a narrative of untold violence and perversity, he sings Love Me Tender as a marriage proposal that would have even made Colonel Parker shed a tear.
Val Kilmer in True Romance. D: Tony Scott (1993). Quentin Tarantino wrote this love story about a part-time hooker (Patricia Arquette) and an Elvis Freak (Christian Slater) who gets regular input from the shades of his hero. Sometimes that’s just encouragement (“I like you Clarence. Always have. Always will”) and sometimes life advice (“Two in the back of his f—kin’ head. Cops’d throw a party, man.”)
Bruce Campbell in Bubba Ho-Tep. D: Don Coscarelli (2002). Elvis near the end years after the death of the impersonator he switched places with year earlier, teams up with some guy who THINKS he’s John F. Kennedy (Ossie Davis) to take out a mummy preying on their fellow residents of the Shady Rest Retirement Home in East Texas. By the end (the most moving “Thank you, thank you very much” you’ll ever hear) I believed every word.
Jack White in Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. D: Jake Kasdan (2007). Just a cameo in this great Johnny Cash biopic parody starring John C. Reilly, but White as the most manic Elvis imaginable (“It’s called Karate, man. Only two kinds of people knowit, the Chinese and The King. And one of them is me.”) walks off with the movie.

In depth live review: Pat Metheny Side Eye at Sony Hall, September 13, 2019
Pat Metheny Side Eye, Sony Hall, 9/13/19
Pat Metheny: acoustic, and electric guitars, orchestrionics, guitar synth; James Francies: acoustic piano, keyboards, electronics; Marcus Gilmore: drums.
Over the past few years guitarist Pat Metheny has been extending the tradition in jazz of mentoring young musicians on the band stand the way Miles Davis, Art Blakey, and currently, the way Wallace Roney, Herbie Hancock, Gary Burton and Chick Corea have done. It's a practice that is rarer and rarer in the music as some of the legends who have done so have passed on, and because the music got a boost in the 70's from academia, the kind of university of the street aspect of playing on the road has been minimized. The guitarist's Side Eye project premise is simple: play with young musicians who've grown up on his music that have caught his attention and see the ways in which they can approach his massive catalog. It is thoroughly in the tradition, albeit his own unique tradition and spawns from his invitation of young musicians to his New York home, and spending large amounts of time with a wide cross section of his own tunes. On the evening of September 13th at Sony Hall in New York City flanked by cameras for an NHK Japanese broadcast, the group, spurred on by an appreciative sold out audience played a continuous two and a half hours of inspired music making.
Indeed, the sort of all encompassing approach of including his entire catalog under one roof has been in play for quite a long time now. For the past several years with his current quartet featuring pianist Gwilym Simcock, bassist Linda May Han Oh, and drummer Antonio Sanchez, and on the final Japanese tour of the Pat Metheny Group with the core quartet, Metheny explored rarely played classics to the delight of audiences all over the world. Though the cast of musicians has rotated including Nate Smith, and Anwar Marshall, James Francies on keyboards and synth bass has remained a constant. With the trio of Francies and Marcus Gilmore on drums for the summer tour not only did he investigate gems from his book of more than 500 compositions, he expanded on them, and wrote new music that took the band's individual personalities to full effect without sacrificing the selfless whole of the superior musicianship on display.
James Francies has been rising quickly on the jazz scene with his Blue Note debut Flight. He is among a cadre of musicians helping bring younger audiences to jazz blending hip hop, R&B, soul and gospel influences along with Robert Glasper, Derrick Hodge, Chris Dave and Unity Band/Unity Group alumnus Ben Williams. In Francies, not only has Metheny found an ideal partner that pianistically is a huge contrast to Hancock, Lyle Mays, Paul Bley, Brad Mehldau, and Simcock, but is equally fearless in presenting a borderless perspective to the music. Marcus Gilmore the 32 year old grandson of the legendary Roy Haynes, has logged valuable time with Chris Potter, Chick Corea's Vigil, and Vigelette trio, David Virelles, and Will Vinson. Like Francies he is deeply immersed not in only Metheny's universe but everything in the contemporary music scene.
As the lights gradually faded up on stage, the guitarist uncharacteristically, and energetically began the evening by speaking to the audience, about how great his musical compatriots were and they wasted little time, getting into the first of a pair of Ornette Coleman compositions during the evening, the classic “Turnaround” that Metheny recorded on 80/81 (ECM, 1980). Metheny dug right into Gilmore's medium tempo swing on the basic 12 bar blues form. Around the third or fourth guitar chorus, Francies dropped out so Metheny could stroll with Gilmore's support and with a chordal instrument like piano dropping out, there is no safety net with the harmony so things become totally open. Buoyed by Gilmore's insistent ride, the guitarist swung harder, and harder. When it was Francies turn to take the first of several dazzling solos, Metheny demonstrated a rarely shown aspect of his comping by playing four to the bar chords a la Freddie Green in the Count Basie band. The only recorded evidence of Metheny applying the technique appeared on “The Moon Song” from Beyond the Missouri Sky (Verve, 1997) with Charlie Haden, and in the context of the Coleman blues, showed his deep love of the jazz guitar tradition.
Francies was transcendant on “Bright Size Life” with a turn on Rhodes that displayed some dizzying counterpoint between his left hand on synth bass, and right hand on Rhodes. He is a very lyrical, melodic player and has chops in spades, but never overwhelms. At 22 years old he is absolutely prodigious, not only with a thorough knowledge of the jazz traditional but equally at home in gospel and R&B. When the keyboardist moved to Hammond organ (playing a Hammond XK-5, a digital, compact version of a B-3) for Metheny's rarely played “Timeline” from the late Michael Brecker's Time is Of the Essence (Verve, 1999) he revealed another sterling aspect of his musical personality. Boosted by Gilmore's deep pocket swing, he soloed with the right hand on the lower manual with first three drawbars out; percussion off, and went from the blues to gospel with ease, supported by his own solid left hand bass on the upper manual. The technique is the opposite of the jazz organ style and stems from Francies gospel roots. The piece was a window into what a Metheny organ trio would have been like, entrenched in the established paradigm but pushing forward in it's own way. Metheny was relaxed, swinging and diving into his improvisation with fervor, mid solo, stepping on a pedal to let a note on his Slaman hollow body ring out emulating the shout, or drone pattern. The drone pattern is something countless organists from Jimmy Smith, Jack McDuff, Don Patterson and Joey DeFrancesco have used. It involves holding down the tonic (involving only notes proper to the prevailing key without chromatic alteration constructed from a diatonic scale) , and “shouting” with the other notes around it, a technique originated from the church. Metheny also used this technique on “Tune Blues” from The Cuong Vu Trio Meets Pat Metheny (2015) a throwback to his days of playing in organ trios coming up in Kansas City, and this exploration of another rarely heard facet of his musical personality was a joy, and shows how his playing is entering a new phase.
Over the first hour as the guitarist examined old favorites with gusto, the most striking revamp was on “Better Days Ahead”. Though the tune has early versions in collector's circles dating back to 1981 or 2, it was first recorded in 1989 with the PMG on Letter From Home. Taking into account a zone that Francies, and Gilmore are well acquainted with, Metheny turned the sunny Brazilian inspired melody into a dark, smoky, sexy funky R&B backbeat that framed his signature lyrical delivery in a new way with the guitarist leaning deep into Gilmore's groove. The drummer, who had a smoking feature a bit earlier on Coleman's “The Good Life” took a bit from the Steve Gadd R&B feel, playing the kick drum on 1 and 3, complemented by streaming cymbals up top adding to the funkines. It was easily one of the most radical transformations of a classic Metheny tune, and a highlight over 2 and a half hours.
After a tender “Message To A Friend” which debuted on John Scofield's I Can See Your House From Here (Blue Note, 1994) the center piece of the set was a suite of three new pieces composed for the band. Metheny explained to the audience that the flexibility of Francies and Gilmore gave him free reign to go into the area that interests him humorously quipping “I can write a piece with 49 pages of written material”. Francies set the tone with glittering sequenced synths, that served as an extension of the electronics heard on the title track of the Unity Group's Kin (<->) as some trademark Metheny harmonies from synths, wafted into the atmosphere. The guitarist began with a descending melody line doubled by bass that transitioned into different sections aided by a baby version of the large Orchestrion, the acoustic mechanical instrument ensemble a part of his arsenal now for a decade. Metheny took two solos on the venerable Roland GR300 guitar synthesizer, with the second in heightened intensity guided by the heavy African flavor of the Orchestrion in tandem with Gilmore's cymbals. Gilmore demonstrated his fluency in Metheny's distinct bebop based camouflaged ride cymbal approach here, but was still infused with a looseness from his constant interaction with the guitarist. Throughout, Francies punctuation with gorgeously ambient analog like synth, and organ provided colors not heard in the music since Lyle Mays' tenure in the Metheny orbit, but his use of these electronica spiced colors added something found in the Houston based pianists own music, that is new an fresh in Metheny's oeuvre. After Metheny reprised the initial melody, the enthralling, cinematic new piece faded into the ether.
From there, Carolyn Chrzan, Metheny's long time guitar tech handed him a solid body electric that has been rarely seen (though it is spotted in the Orchestrion World Tour 2010 poster) and the trio launched into a moody, blues-rock ballad. Metheny started alone, playing a melody that at first vaguely seemed to suggest “Travels” but as it turned out was something completely new. Fans who have seen Side Eye have reported the tune as sounding seemingly un Metheny like, more in line with Eric Clapton or Eric Johnson. While they are correct the tune is somewhat reminiscent of music from them, and improvisation wise took him to less traveled roads, the melody was pure Metheny. He built into a distorted solo of raging intensity, Gilmore's rock beat and Francies' organ unyielding behind him. From the shouts in the audience, and heads bopping, the tune was completely satisfying and would be a winner on a recording as would the first new piece. Metheny returned to the GR300 for the final new tune, starting with a Coltrane like meditation, and once more, building up to a slow tension and release, utilizing his favorite double time device with drums and Orchestrion. His guitar synth playing this night was vibrant, energized, and he played more GR300 than perhaps any time I've seen him. With the GR300 he can get into the range of an alto or soprano saxophonist and in small group settings, as with the closing, much faster than usual “When We Were Free” (featuring a gorgeous Pikasso guitar intro) he can really channel the mid to late period Coltrane vibe, mixed with Ornette Coleman harmolodic asides. On both hollow body and guitar synth, the trumpet like aspect of his playing was on display more than ever as well. The show closed with an evolved acoustic medley of favorites that has been played as a closer since the Kin (↔) tour.
Pat Metheny, like Miles Davis, has been constantly evolving as a musician. His playing has been arguably better than ever and Side Eye is a wonderful forum to house all his instincts in one place, perhaps moreso than the Unity Group band and tour. As great as that band and resulting albums were and are, Side Eye offers something undeniably vital. Jazz is a music that thrives on adding to it's rich traditions and history. At it's best the music reveres it's tradition while moving things ahead into the possibilities of the present and looks towards the future. While there are a segment of fans who pine for the return of the Pat Metheny Group, which dissolved in 2010 after more than 30 years, Metheny is giving younger generations who grew up completely familiar in his unique musical universe, the chance to make their mark in their voice, opening new vistas. The thing that everyone loves about him is still there, Metheny can play densely or lyrically-- it's just expanded to greater capacity, eschewing the fat for more concise solos and tunes. He's doing what every great jazz musician should do and that's move forward. Side Eye very well may be the finest group he’s lead in years.

Can I get some fc suggestions and prompts for Fenrir Greyback?
Hello, dear!
I’m very sorry of the wait for this, somehow it got lost! However, some alternates for Greyback would include:
Sinqua Walls
Michael Trevino
Shemar Moore
Charles Michael Davis
And as for some prompts:
Fenrir Greyback is known most famously for being a werewolf, but there isn’t much known about his past. How did he become a werewolf? Was it a genetic, or was he bitten in his crib, like he went on to do to others? What was it like, to be a werewolf in a world full of wizards? How did he react to being kept from Hogwarts?
On a similar vein, it’s well known as well that Greyback is a loyal follower of Lord Voldemort. But why? What was it that drew the wolf into following the Dark Lord in the war? What called to him? What skills, other than his physical brevity, does he use to help benefit the Death Eaters?
Write about his pack, or lack thereof; does Fenrir have other wolves that he calls his kin, or does his abrasive and violent nature put off even his own kind? We know he attacked Remus Lupin and, undoubtedly, several others over the course of his life. Does he keep them to stay loyal? How does he perceive them? Is turning children into werewolves a sport he finds enjoyment in, or part of his arrangement with Voldemort?
