Ultimate Decades Challenge - 1370s - 1380s
* TW: This post contains mention of characters who died during pregnancy/childbirth.
The 1370s has been a tranquil decade, with the family expanding well over the past ten years. However, as the next century begins to crest the horizon, so too does change. Many of the 5th Generation men, newly married, have been consigned to the Second 100 Year War. Luckily, our current heir Terric was spared such a fate. However, with the loss of both his parents, Terric is feeling estranged from his stepmother, and has become discontented with a simple peasant’s life. So, in 1379, he and his young bride, Brigit have stepped out into the world of silk and are making their attempt at joining the merchant class of Windenburg. After purchasing a run-down home in the Market Quarter of town, they are left with only a few Simoleons in their pocket. Can they make it one more step up the treacherous social ladder of Medieval society?

The new Brooker family home is currently a WIP. At the moment, Terric and Brigit don’t have a lot of money left and are still setting up their Silk business. Will post once the build is complete!

Chapter 1
WC: 3179
5 years prior
If you took satan himself and slapped him in the black skinny jeans your mom wears, it would be Luke Hemmings.
I hated Luke more than life itself, more than rain on a beach day or the last cigarette in the box.
It used to not always be like this. My band and his band used to be best mates, he and I had alittle chemistry. Alittle. Not a lot, but a tiny drop. We hung out every day after school, we played songs with each other.
That was until Luke stole my song.
Stole my song. A song about how I felt after the events of the breakup and Luke Hemmings changed a few pronouns and broadcasted it across the school. And fucking 5 seconds of summer got the credit for it.
I didn't blame the other bandmates. Ashton and Michael were oblivious to when Luke had even written the song and Calum, well Calum said he just showed up to rehearsal and played the bass.
Luke claimed he came up with it in a dream. Isn't that the most bullshit excuse ever? A song about my personal life made up in his dream. He claimed I stole it from him. Even more bullshit.
I wrote that song, expressing all the emotions I had felt concerning the breakup and he stole it.
~~
"I can't wait to leave this school," Maddie said fixing her bag on her shoulder. She was significantly shorter than all of us and I wasn't even sure how her legs could catch up. She was maybe a foot shorter than Kiara who stood at almost 6'. Maddie was the bassist of our band and what she would call the 'hype man.' She was bouncy, bubbly, and not afraid to call people cunts to their faces. She liked to watch Star Wars movies and play soccer in her free time.
"Aren't we all?" Kiara rolled her eyes at the girl's words like they weren't known. Kiara was our lead guitarist who was actually from America. She moved here for Dad's job back in grade 7 and we had been friends ever since. She had dark skin with her natural hair and she towered over most of us. She wasn't that much taller than me but she still intimidated the crap out of me. When Kiara was not volunteering at school or saving the world, she was usually with one of the two bands.
"I actually like school." Willow smiled, sunglasses covering her bloodshot eyes. Willow was our drummer. And when Willow wasn't banging on drums, or with her girlfriend, she was usually getting high or drinking. She was the party one of our group and was the best fucking drummer in all of Australia. Don't tell Ashton I said that.
"This is the first time you've been at school all week," I told her rolling my eyes. Then there was me I guess. I'm the lead singer in the band. Sometimes guitar, sometimes keyboard, sometimes wherever I was needed.
"And? That doesn't mean I can appreciate the beauty of learning." Willow said sarcastically. It was good to say we were all done with year 12 and just wanted to leave. Kiara was going back to America for university, Willow was marrying her girlfriend and moving to Spain, and Maddie was going to university in England. I was staying here.
It was hard knowing that after this year I'd be alone. The band would be broken up until further notice and I'd be stuck here, alone.
"Georgina Summer? Where's Georgina summer?" A voice boomed through the hallways. I turned my head to look behind me to see Michael Clifford with one of those megaphone speaker things. His red hair made it easy to spot him in the hallway, so I didn't know why he couldn't spot me with the same hair color.
"Shut the hell up, Clifford!" Maddie yelled loudly at the boy whose head snapped in our direction. He had a huge smile on his face as he ran up to us.
"Women." He said still in the megaphone making us wince. He realized he was still talking into it and pushed it down, "women." He said again a lot quieter, shooting us all a grin.
"You really couldn't have just called me?" I asked unamused staring at the megaphone in his hand.
"You wouldn't have answered." He pouted.
I leaned in towards him slightly, sending him a sarcastic smile, "Exactly."
"You're no fun, but hey, I'm here to invite you to this party Ashton's having tomorrow At his house," Michael said looking at us four.
"I'm in," Willow said smiling before turning and walking away suddenly.
Michael's eyebrows scrunched in confusion "o-okay? She's in. Maddie's also in because Calum will be there and-"
Maddie shook her head and her arms at the boy, "wait wait wait. You can't just assume I'd come to a party just because My boyfriend is going."
Michael raised his eyebrows at her before she grumbled, "I'll see you there." She said before walking away in the direction Willow went
"Kiara is always in," Michael said smiling. Kiara shrugged, "always. Bye Gigi."
"And you." He said looking down at me, "You'll say you won't come because Luke's coming but then you'll break and come."
Michael Clifford thinks he knows me so well, doesn't he? I shook my head giving him an amused smile. "We'll see about that."
~~
"Black or red?" I asked holding up two dresses as the girls lay sprawled across my room. Willow was on my roof smoking a cigarette that I wouldn't let her smoke inside, Maddie was on the phone with Calum and Kiara was actually giving me input.
"You have red hair," Kiara said unamused. "You don't wear red on red."
I held up my hands in defense, putting the red dress back in my wardrobe, and slid off my jeans and T-shirt before sliding on the dress.
"Calums picking us up," Maddie said pulling the phone away from her mouth for a second.
"Hell no. I do not want to be stuck with you and your boyfriend making out in the front seat for 5 minutes before we leave the house." Kiara said glaring at Maddie.
Maddie pouted, "fine he'll pick me up."
"I cannot 7th wheel all night tonight." Kiara groaned and rubbed her eyes with the palms of her hands. My eyes narrowed at her, "I don't have a partner."
"You and Luke have so much sexual tension that itfeels like you're still together," Kiara said making me groan in response.
"It's true, you guys need to like bone already," Willow yelled from the roof. I walked over the my window and smiled at her sarcastically before shutting the window and locking the latches.
"Just because me and Luke dated for the tiniest amount of time doesn't mean we have any chemistry left," I said grabbing my trainers and putting them on my feet.
Maddie looked at me puzzled, "tiniest time? are we talking about the same Luke? You dated for four years."
"Maybe alittle more than a tiny amount of time. Either way, it doesn't change how much I hate the guy. He stole-"
"My song." Maddie and Kiara said at the same time rolling their eyes.
"We know. Still don't know how that happened, I mean it has been seen that people come up with the same ideas at the same time." Kiara said.
"Not the entirety of a song!" I said before sighing, "Look, me and Luke are history. And by history I mean we hate each other's fucking guts. It's not changing."
A tap came from the window and Willow smiled before blowing her hot breath on the window. She drew an arrow heart and wrote L+G in it backward.
I rolled my eyes before standing up and closing the blinds on her.
"I'm not saying that you have to, bone, him tonight, I'm just saying try to be civil for the rest of us," Kiara said with a pleading look.
"I'm alwasy the civil one." I argued, "It's him you should be telling this to."
------
I had already regretted coming to this party.
I didn't have school in the morning and I was staying over at Maddie's so there was no reason for me not to let loose and have a drink. But god did I hate the taste of alcohol. I also didn't like who I was on alcohol, it wasn't me I guess. I didn't mind being the designated driver.
"Here," Willow yelled over the music handing me a red solo cup of something. It looked like piss if I was being Honest.
"Don't get your pants in a mess, it's apple juice." She said rolling her eyes at me. "I brought some in my bag for you so you wouldn't feel left out."
I smiled gratefully at her before taking a sip; Apple juice at parties always hit differently.
"I'm going to find Danica." She said patting my shoulder and looking around for her girlfriend. "Call me if you need me." She disappeared into the crowd as soon as I nodded in approval.
"Hey, pretty girl." I turned my head to see Ashton Irwin smiling a toothy grin at me. Ashton and I had been friends since we were 4 years old, making him my utter and total best friend. He's how I met Michael, Calum, and the other one.
I smiled brightly at him before throwing my arms around his neck, "come here often?" He asked dipping me like we were dancing.
"A lot actually." I winked at me causing him to blush and set me back on my feet. This was our relationship, anyone from the outside would think we had been dating for all our friendship but in reality, he was just my best friend.
"Didn't think you'd show up. If you get tired or bored, just go up to my room. I'll tell Maddie where you are." He said taking a sip of his beer can he had.
"Thanks. Neither did I," I said raising my eyebrows slightly. "But Michael is just so persuasive with that megaphone. I mean who let the loudest kid in the group get a megaphone?"
Ashton laughed and shook his head, "Luke bought it to shut him up in the moment, however, it just made everything worse."
I rolled my eyes, that was such a Luke thing. Only thinking about now and not the future.
"Are you guys like ever going to makeup? I hate not being able to hang out with both of you at the same time." Ashton said, his face turning serious as his fingers danced over the top of his cup.
"You know how bad the breakup was," I said shuffling my foot uncomfortably. It was true, even before Luke stole my song our relationship was in shambles.
"I know." Ashton sighed, "I'm not trying to tell you who you love but come on Gigi. You and Luke were unbreakable. What even happened?"
I shook my head slightly, tugging on my lip ring anxiously with my teeth. Me and Luke never told anyone why we broke up. After you date for so long people expect you to last forever, but that wasn't the case with me and Luke. It was all I ever heard these days. 'Why did you and Luke break up?' 'Y'all were so cute!' 'Such a shame'
People just fall out of love.
"Sorry," Ashton mumbled seeing my discomfort. I shook my head again waving him off, "No no it's fine." Maybe I did need a drink. I turned my head to the living room to see some kid throwing up in Ashton's mum's vase. Never mind.
"Shit." Ashton said, "Hey mate! That goes outside not in the vase." He yelled at the guy pointing towards the backyard, "I'll talk to you later alright?" Ashton said kissing my cheek before running off towards the sick guy.
I sighed at his absence, Taking a sip of my drink. "Gigi!" Maddie yelled over the music, pulling Calum along who was pulling Michael. "Hey," I said to the three.
"Where'd Ashton go?" Michael asked looking around. I pointed to Ashton dragging the sick guy by his shirt towards the back door. Michael 'ahead' in recognition and turned back to us, "'Well see' huh?" He smiled
I rolled my eyes at him bringing up what I had said yesterday. "We did see. And I chose to come." I said.
"We're always happy to see you, Gigi," Calum said smiling at me, I hadn't talked to him in a while but he was just always with Maddie.
"I'd like to take the credit for it," Maddie said smiling proudly.
I rolled my eyes at her, "it was Michael's obnoxious voice actually."
Michael smiled at her in a mocking 'ha ha I win' kinda look but then it fell and he snapped his head towards me. "Wait what?"
I smiled brightly at him as he pouted, "I'm dying my hair back." He threatened.
My mouth was agape and I glared at him, "Rude Michael! We're twins." He shook his head before putting the hood of his hoodie over his head to hide his hair. "Not anymore."
"I liked it when it was black." Calum said, "Oo or the green."
"God I hated the green." I said, "It made my hair completely dead." Me and Michael alwasy dyed our hair the same color. It was fun, alittle weird, but it was fun.
"Your hair is always dead," Maddie said reaching out to touch my hair, making me smack her hand away.
"Maybe we should take a break after this color," I told Michael.
He nodded, "Yeah or we may have to shave off our heads. This is the 5th color this month."
"Speaking of shaving off our heads, where's Luke?" Calum said more to Michael than me.
I scrunched my eyebrows at him slightly, "why does shave heads make you think of Hemmings?"
Michael rolled his Eyes, "Calum shaved Luke's head in grade 5." Calum had a wide smile on his face as he remembered that day. I didn't remember that day, maybe we hadn't met yet but I only remembered Luke with long hair.
"I don't remember that," I said shrugging and turning around looking for the blonde boy for Calum. "If I see him I'll let you know."
"I need a drink." Maddie said looking at us, "One of you want to come with me?"
Calum nodded before Maddie grabbed his arm and pulled him along towards the kitchen. "I need one!" Michael said waving goodbye to me quickly before following the couple, who probably wanted to be alone, to the Kitchen.
I sighed looking around at the unknown faces. I didn't really hang out with people other than 5sos and Sugar's so this entire party was not in my comfort. I mean sure at school I knew everyone and everyone knew me but did I know them? Absolutely not.
Willow was gone probably smoking on the roof with her girlfriend. Kiara probably went home to be honest, I hadn't seen her all night. Maddie and Calum were making out, Ashton was nowhere to be seen and Michael was in the crowd partying.
Ashton's bed was always comfy. He had stuffed animals that he put under his bed when the guys came over but in reality, he slept with them every night. It always smelt nice in there, you wouldn't expect a teenage boy to have lived there. Clean laundry, lavender, citrus. It probably smelled better than my room.
So with that thought I ascended the stairs up to Ashton's room. I'd play on my phone, play his guitar, do something. Anything was better than standing alone at a party or following the only person you knew around like a sick puppy.
I twisted the knob of Ashton's room and opened the door. I immediately groaned seeing Luke hemmings on top of some girl now both staring at me.
"Put a fucking sock on the door hemmings." I groaned throwing my head back annoyed.
"Get the hell out Geo." He said glaring at me before throwing the pillow behind the girl's head at me.
"Hemmings? I thought your name was Luke?" The girl under him asked.
I stifled a laugh but failed miserably. Luke shot me a glare before turning back to the girl, "Hemmings is my last name."
"I thought it was Robert?" She asked.
Luke sighed closing his eyes and sliding off the girl, "That's my middle name." He mumbled, "Just go."
The girl pulled back on her jacket, still looking confused as she walked past me out the door. I sent her a cheeky smile as she did before turning back to Luke. "Got you a real keeper there," I said sarcastically motioning out the door with my head.
"At least I can get some if I want to." He grumbled sitting back down on the bed.
I rolled my eyes at him, "are you going to leave now? Kinda want Ashton's room."
"Absolutely." Luke said, "not." "I was here first so I will stay." He kicked back his Legs on Ashton's bed nuzzling himself into the bed.
"Yeah, but Ashton said I could have his room. And I'd hate to call Ashton to kick you out." I said shaking my head.
Luke thought for a minute before shaking his head and getting underneath the covers. "I'm not scared of Ashton. And I'm also not scared of my ex-girlfriend of four days."
"Four weeks." I corrected him.
"Four years!" Ashton yelled walking into the room. "You guys dated for four. Years. Years!" He said franticly.
"he is drunk," Luke said groaning earning a confused glance from sober Ashton. I looked at Luke with the same expression he was giving me before shaking my head, "I think I know how long we Dated."
"4 months at most," Luke said nodding in agreement.
Ashton let out an audible sigh, "At least you guys arent yelling at each other."
"Oh yeah. Back to that. Get out." Luke said pointing towards the door.
I shook my head, "fuck no. You leave." I said grabbing his shoes from the ground and throwing them out the door.
"Stop that." He said as I threw the other one out as well. I grabbed his phone out of his hands too throwing it out the door as well.
"Hey!" Luke yelled standing up to go retrieve his phone. I smiled as I shrugged off my jacket and jumped on the bed, digging myself under the covers.
"Bitch!" Luke yelled as Ashton started to close the door. I didn't know if he was talking to me or Ashton but we both flicked him off before shutting the door completely.
"Kiara told me you guys would be civil," Ashton said looking at me unamused.
I scrunched my eyebrows at him slightly, "that was me being civil. If I wasn't I would have thrown it out the window."

wedding vows
Pairing: Michael Clifford & Calum Hood, Calum Hood/Roy English, Michael Clifford/Crystal Leigh Rating: Teen and Up Key Tags: Friendship, Weddings, Sentimental, Fluff Word Count: 5,573 Read on AO3
Summary:
Oh. It’s January 11. Michael is getting married today.
Calum instantly wakes to his alarm, the chorus of “She Looks So Perfect” blaring through the room at full volume. It’s his special occasion alarm, the one he only uses when it’s important that he gets up, given that the opening notes still give him an adrenaline rush after seven years of playing the song live to screaming crowds. He practically leaps from bed to silence it, sitting up, rubbing his eyes, and trying to figure out what’s so important about today that last-night-him decided to use that song.
Oh. It’s January 11. Michael is getting married today.
Calum rolls out of bed, wincing when his feet come into contact with the cold hardwood. He slips on a flannel in place of a robe and grabs his phone, then heads to the kitchen where he can faintly hear Roy puttering around.
Duke trots over to him when he spots Calum coming down the hall, but doesn’t clamor to be let out or fed. Roy must have done that when he got up, but Calum will take him on a short walk before he leaves for Michael’s. Because this is an abbreviated ceremony rather than the full wedding, he doesn’t need to arrive to help direct the caterers and wedding decorators until mid-afternoon. He has a bit more responsibility since none of the parents are there to help, but the event planner should take care of most of the logistics, leaving him free to attend to Michael.
“Hey, bud,” he murmurs, crouching down to scratch his fingers through Duke’s thick fur. “Uncle Mike’s getting married today. I’ll take pictures for you.”
Duke wags his tail, even though Calum knows full well that he doesn’t care about the pictures and is going to be displeased when both he and Roy are out of the house for most of the afternoon and evening. Calum smacks a kiss to the top of his head and continues on his way.
Roy is humming to himself and messily spreading jam on some toast when Calum enters, Duke trotting after him. He looks like he just got back from a run, and he smells like it, too, but Calum gives him a kiss on the cheek on his way to the coffee machine anyway.
“Great rising,” Roy says, interrupting his song to do so. “Ready for today?”
“Think so,” Calum says, getting down his favorite mug and pressing the right buttons on the machine. “It’s not like I’m getting married. It’s not even the proper wedding.”
“It’s still a big deal,” Roy says. Calum hums.
Michael is getting married today. Michael, who Calum can still remember being an unreasonably tall, extremely loud kid pushing him out of his comfort zone but always there to catch Calum when he stumbled, is getting married. The same Michael who he’s been writing songs with for ten years. The same Michael who snorted water out of his nose the last time Calum saw him.
Michael is getting married today.
“Yeah, it’s a big deal,” Calum concedes.
At least Calum doesn’t have to give a speech today. He probably will, because he’ll take any opportunity to talk up one of his brothers, but it takes some pressure off knowing that the crowd will be his best friends and people he at least knows in passing rather than a sea of strangers. It’s a good thing he makes a living being on stage, because before the band he was absolutely shit at public speaking.
“Are we riding together, or separately?” Calum asks, taking a sip of his coffee.
“Together,” Roy says. “I want to see Crys before she gets ready.”
Calum hums. Roy may be a groomsman, but he’s been friends with Crystal since before Michael and Calum came into the picture. It makes sense that he wants to spend a few seconds with her before she gets swept up in all of the preparations for the day. It’s also probably a good idea for them to carpool because Michael’s house doesn’t have unlimited parking.
“Want toast?” Roy asks. Calum nods and watches as Roy puts two more pieces of toast in the toaster.
Wow. Michael is getting married today. Somehow the thought holds even more weight after a sip of coffee.
Calum sighs and pushes all of his feelings about that to the side. He can address that when he’s properly caffeinated and actually at Michael’s house. For now, his only responsibility is breakfast.

When Calum arrives, decorations are being set up in the backyard. He pokes his head out there to ensure that everything is going well, and all of the event staff assure him that they don’t have any questions right now. Everyone in the backyard is in motion, hanging lights and adjusting speakers or meticulously setting silverware at each place setting. He compliments the flower arrangements, which are just beginning to be compiled, watches the stage set up for a moment, then heads inside to find Michael.
The inside of the house is largely untouched. Michael and Crystal will do their first look in the sun room, then they’ll greet everyone and take more pictures on the outer deck. Afterwards, they’ll sign the papers and actually get married in the backyard, but otherwise the festivities are confined to their rooms as they get ready. Crystal gets the main part of the house, while Michael is set up in a guest room. Calum carefully makes his way there, avoiding the parts of the house under construction, suit carefully wrapped in plastic over his shoulder. He has to step over a baby gate at one point, no doubt set up to ensure that the dogs don’t get in the way of people setting up or accidentally get stepped on with so much foot traffic today, and both dogs meet him there with furiously wagging tails and tongues lolling out of their mouths.
“Hey guys,” he says, leaning down to pet them. It’s a good thing that neither of them shed too much, because dog hair on Michael’s nice, expensive, designer black suit doesn’t exactly fit with the wedding aesthetic. Calum knows that Michael is going to cuddle with them before he actually signs the paper.
“Mum and dad are getting married today,” Calum tells the dogs very seriously, running a hand over Moose’s back. Southy presses his cold, wet nose impatiently against his hand until Calum pays equal attention to him. “Are you both excited? Huh? Yes, you are! Good doggies!”
He doesn’t let himself spend too much time with them, clock ticking in the back of his mind in a countdown to the marriage. There will be extra time for the dogs later, but right now he has to check in with Michael and see what he needs.
Calum knocks gently on the door to the guest suite.
“Who is it?” Michael calls, voice muffled from the wood.
“Just me,” he replies. Michael opens the door, and Calum envelopes him in a hug, awkward squishing of his plastic-covered suit be damned. Michael squeezes him tightly before stepping back, letting him fully inside and closing the door behind him.
“Hey, buddy,” Ashton says from the bed where he’s lounging back, a warm spot in the large, light room. “You’re a little late. I was worried I would have to take over best man duties.”
“Fuck off,” Calum says, striding over to lean down and give him a one-armed hug, too. “I’m right on time. You’re just early to everything these days.”
On the rare occasion when Ashton isn’t early, he’s always significantly late. Besides, him being Michael’s best man wouldn’t be the end of the world. Ashton and Luke have already been involved in the planning almost as much as him, and he knows that it’ll be that way for the actual wedding in Bali as well, whenever they get to hold it. For as much as Calum is the best man, he likes to think that it’s mostly because Michael couldn’t get away with having three of them.
Maybe the band will rotate around best men whenever they get married, so everyone gets a chance. Then again, maybe Luke or Ashton will choose a brother, or maybe they’ll go outside of the band. Either way, Calum knows that the title is just that: a title. They’re all standing together with Michael today.
“Is anyone else here?” he asks.
“I don’t know about the bridesmaids, but it’s just Ashton for me right now,” Michael says.
“Roy’s here, he’s saying hi to Crystal,” Calum says. “Besides, we have time.”
“Yeah, of course,” Michael says, sticking his hands in his pockets. He’s not dressed yet, wearing a simple hoodie and sweatpants, and he immediately takes his hands out of his pockets again to fidget with the drawstrings on his sweatshirt.
“You nervous?” Calum asks quietly. The corners of Michael’s mouth tug up in a small smile.
“No. Not nervous. Antsy, maybe. I’m ready to be married.”
“Should’ve had the ceremony in the morning, then,” Calum quips.
“Nah, the ladies need time to get dolled up,” Ashton chimes in. “That’s why we’re here, to keep you from going crazy while you twiddle your thumbs and wait and maybe get a little dolled up, too.”
Calum hums.
“Luke will probably bring makeup, if you want some extra glitter for your wedding,” he says. Michael smiles and shakes his head.
“The day I experiment with glittery makeup should not be my wedding day,” he says. “That’s not a decision I should make three hours before tying the knot and taking the pictures. We should’ve planned that at least three weeks ago.”
Another knock on the door interrupts them before the conversation can continue, and Roy slips inside, Luke right on his heels. Hugs get passed around, then Calum actually forces himself to do responsible best man duties like tell everyone to hang up their suits so they don’t crease weird and double check the timeline to ensure everyone will be ready when pictures start. Luke pulls him aside while Ashton finds a steamer and quietly asks Calum if he brought that long coat with the fancy embroidery that he wants to borrow for dinner, which Calum did, but they’re interrupted by the arrival of the other groomsmen.
Suddenly the bedroom feels small, rather than ridiculously large. It’s a change from the past few months of the pandemic, where they’ve all barely seen each other, and although Calum loves it, it sets something weird under his skin for a second. Michael seems to be feeling it, too, if the way he keeps glancing around is any indication, but Calum planned for this.
“Alright, everyone, suits on,” he commands. “We have a wedding to attend!”
It’s still crowded in the room, but Michael seems happier now that everyone has a task to do, including him. Calum changes in record time, none of them feeling particularly shy about dressing in front of each other after years of doing it in front of various people in various dressing rooms. Michael slips into the bathroom with his fancy suit. Roy helps Calum with his buttons, and Calum doesn’t even call him on the fact that it’s just an excuse to ogle his chest in public. He does smirk at him, and Roy responds with a quirk of his eyebrows. Calum would love to extend the moment longer, but he has a job to do and can’t get distracted. Instead, he turns around to help Ashton adjust his fancy pocket square.
It almost feels like getting ready before a show, but while the atmosphere is equally charged, there’s something besides adrenaline in the air.
Calum doesn’t want to get too sappy before the wedding has even started, but it’s probably the power of love. It’s the easiest explanation.
Michael is getting married today. Calum can’t help his grin at the thought.
His grin only widens when Michael steps out of the bathroom.
The suit looked great when he tried it on in the store, but it especially suits him today. The leafy pattern in the black shirt looks magical when it catches the light, although the top button is undone still, and the suit jacket fits him perfectly, tailored to ensure he’s comfortable and feels as good as he looks. Someone whistles, then the room fills with deafening applause and cheering. Michael ducks his head sheepishly, waving off the compliments.
“Damn, Michael!” Ashton calls. “You clean up good.”
He laughs, cheeks red. Calum steps forward and puts a hand on his shoulder, squeezing comfortingly.
“You look amazing,” he says sincerely.
“Yeah?” Michael asks hopefully, like he needs to be sure that Calum means what he’s saying. Michael has left lots of insecurities behind, but it’s an important day. Michael is getting married, and it makes sense that he wants to double check that he looks his best.
“Yes,” Calum confirms with a grin. “Seriously, Crystal is a lucky girl.”
Michael smiles, all of Calum’s joy reflected back at him.
“Here, let me get that button for you,” he says. Michael tilts his chin up, giving Calum access to the button right at the base of his throat. Calum’s fingers brush the soft skin of his neck as he fastens in, trying his best not to choke him, and once he finishes he pats the prickly part of Michael’s cheek twice.
“Handsome lad,” he says. Michael swats his hand away, rolling his eyes fondly.
“Help me with the necklace, too?” he asks, holding up the silver chain that needs to fit under his collar. Calum gladly takes it and helps him with that, too.
Holy shit. Michael is getting married today.
By the time Michael is ready for the first look and Calum shuffles everyone else out to the outer deck for the signature cocktails and mocktails, the energy among the guests is buzzing, excitement undercutting every casual conversation and stretching their smiles wide. While the guests wait for Michael and Crystal to see each other for the first time since getting ready and get their pictures, Calum flits from person to person, seemingly unable to keep his energy under control.
His best friend is getting married today. Michael, the guy he’s known since childhood, one of the absolute most important people in his life, is getting married. And it’s to someone who Calum actually approves of.
Crystal makes Michael really, truly happy. When Michael whispered I think she’s the one, Cal late at night on a bus between cities years ago, Calum could see clear as day that he was telling the truth. Since then, he’s witnessed the way that Crystal loves him gently in return, boosting him up and mirroring all of his love and affection back at him. Michael settled more with her, comfortable in his skin, and Calum watched her blossom under Michael’s attention as well.
Roy catches him with an arm around his waist on his second round around the outer deck, stalling him long enough to steal a kiss, then letting him go. Calum smiles at him, trading unspoken words of reassurance. Roy’s eyes crinkle with his grin.
When the happy couple finally emerges to take the rest of the wedding photos, Calum loses his breath at how beautiful they are. Michael looks the same as he did when Calum helped him get ready, and Crystal of course looks stunning in her sparkling wedding dress, but the beauty truly comes from the smiles on their faces and the way that their hands are clasped together, hold lose and gentle like they can’t imagine straying far enough away to need a firmer tether.
“Down to the lawn!” Abbey, the maid of honor, cheers, holding her glass up and leading the way. All of the guests cheer in response, joining the conga line down to the rest of the photographs.
Weddings include a lot of pictures, and this isn’t even the final big one. Calum’s anticipation already feels like it’s at an all-time high, like they’re about to go out onstage for the first show of a new tour, so he can’t imagine how Michael feels. Still, he seems calm, content to take pictures with his wife-to-be and laugh at his dogs zooming around the yard. When it’s finally time for the groomsmen to pose for a picture, Calum sighs in relief at having something to do.
Calum takes his place on the outdoor couch, squished between Michael and Ashton. It’s a familiar place to be.
The camera flashes, and after more flashes in different positions and moving to a different part of the lawn, it’s over. The sun sinks below the horizon, Michael and Crystal sign the papers while Brian walks them through the process, and they become husband and wife instead of fiancees in a matter of seconds.
“Holy shit,” Calum breathes evenly, sitting in his designated chair at the table, Michel and Crystal missing while she changes into a dress with sleeves so she won’t freeze during the January night and Michael waits to make their first entrance as a married couple. “Holy shit.”
Roy nods in agreement. He doesn’t need Calum to elaborate or try to add anything else to the conversation. It hasn’t even properly hit Calum yet: his best friend is married, and everything feels exactly the same, but his best friend is married.
Roy reaches out and gives his hand a squeeze. Calum stares at the menu with wide eyes, taking in the amalgamation of southern and Australian vegan food.
He doesn’t remember what he eats, even though it tastes absolutely fantastic. Roy shares tidbits from his plate when Calum overloads on the familiar Australian fare and doesn’t leave enough room on his own for Crystal’s southern selections. Calum takes bites in between laughing his ass off and staying hyper aware of anything the happy couple may need, passing the water pitcher before either of them ask for a refill and teasing Michael about his inability to eat without using fifty napkins.
Everyone is in high spirits from the good food and drink and the good company. Michael and Crystal hold court from their spot at the center of the table, more wrapped up in each other than their guests, exactly as it should be. Calum hooks his ankle around Roy’s, enjoying their easy closeness while they jump between separate conversations. Calum has always loved that type of comfortable familiarity, where they can be doing completely different things but always pick up exactly where they left off, on the same wavelength without realizing it. They’re separate, but intimately connected at the same time.
Michael and Crystal’s comfortable familiarity is different. They’re always aware of the other person, always reaching out to twine their fingers together or wrap an arm around a waist. They’re a united front, finishing each other’s sentences easily but also knowing when to wait for the other person to speak, happiest when they’re right next to each other and engaged in something together.
They work together in a way that Calum and Roy don’t, but that’s better suited to them. Calum would suffocate like that, but Michael thrives.
They click, filling in each other’s gaps perfectly. Calum had never seen Michael feel as comfortable with another person before Crystal. He’s head over heels in an eternal honeymoon phase, one that has already stood the test of time and the many trials that come with the double-edged sword of fame and the weight of shitty mental health.
Calum is so happy that there’s another person out there who loves Michael just as strongly as he does, one that will be there when the band can’t. He’s glad that Michael is surrounded by people who care about him in every context, that he has someone to fill all of the different roles in his life. He’s forever grateful that Michael has someone that he can love back just as fiercely and happily.
As dinner winds down, a few people get up from their seats and mill around the table, starting discussions with people that they were sitting too far away from to talk to before. Calum knows that it’s been a while since he’s seen everyone gathered here with COVID, and he’s content to talk to anyone who approaches, most people briefly saying hi before they move on to congratulate Michael and Crystal again. Calum sees Brian approach the couple and whisper something to them, eyebrows lifting in a question. They both nod, smiles large and radiant, and Calum watches as Brian grins back and ducks into the house, returning a few minutes later with a guitar.
Calum nudges Roy and nods towards the small stage where Brian is pulling up a stool. He taps a microphone, the dull thud sounding through the garden and drawing even more people’s attention.
“Uh, hi,” Brian says as someone stops the Spotify playlist that has been playing throughout dinner. “I have a little gift for Crystal and Michael that I wanted to share. I mean, with the amount of musicians here it was inevitable that someone would write them a song, right?”
He strums the guitar and fiddles with the tuning pegs as guests wander away from the table and towards the stage. Calum pulls Michael’s chair out for him so it doesn’t get caught in the grass, and Michael does the same for Crystal before taking her hand and leading her over.
Brian clears his throat, then strums the guitar again and begins to sing.
“Damn,” Calum whispers to Roy halfway through the chorus. “I’m glad I didn’t try to write a song and compete with this.”
Brian’s song is beautiful, and Calum spends most of it watching Michael and Crystal’s reaction. MIchael has his arm around her, tucking her close to his side with a drink in his other hand, and they’re both leaning towards each other, swaying just the slightest bit with the beat. At one point, Crystal turns and presses a kiss to Michael’s jaw, and Michael beams before pressing one to her lips in response.
Calum claps and gives a good-hearted whoop when Brian finishes, then beelines for the stage and waves for the microphone.
“Are you singing?” Brian asks as he passes it over, delighted.
“I’m not singing,” Calum says into the microphone, stopping the good-natured cheers that had started to erupt and waving off the teasing boos. “I just want to say a few words. Not the actual best man speech, because I’m saving that for Bali. I want to see if I can make Karen cry.”
Michael laughs and shakes his head.
“I did want to say something today, though, since you two are married now.”
The crowd quiets, and over the heads of his friends Calum makes eye contact with Roy, who gives him a smile. He turns his attention back to Michael and Crystal, heart warming at the sight of them surrounded by so many loved ones, the twinkling lights around the dinner table forming a starry backdrop that frames them perfectly.
“Michael, Crystal,” he begins. “I think I speak for everyone when I say that we all are incredibly happy for you. I’ve had the privilege of watching you both fall and grow in love together, from the very beginning. In fact, I think I was the first person Michael told about your first kiss, right?”
Calum looks to Michael for confirmation, and he laughs and nods, probably remembering how embarrassingly giddy he had been, grin unable to be contained and face red from the sun and happiness. Bali made all of them a little crazy in different ways, but Calum will always be happy that he and Michael share it as the starting point for two incredibly important relationships.
Calum glances at Roy again, remembering the days that followed Michael’s revelation, then turns back to the happy couple.
“I’m not going to lie and say that I immediately knew from that moment that the both of you would end up married, but I can say that by the time Michael told us he proposed, there was no part of me that was surprised. In the years since that first trip to Bali, I have witnessed you stand by each other in sickness and in health, for better or for worse, all of those sappy things. I’m sure your vows will do a better job encapsulating everything you mean to each other, but I want to say that as an outsider, it has been great watching you both make each other better. It’s obvious that you love loving each other, and I think I can again speak for everyone here when I say that we love loving you, as individuals and as a couple. Thanks for letting us be here today to continue loving you both.”
He puts the microphone back on its stand and gracefully exits amidst a smattering of applause and aw’s, beelining to the happy couple. They both pull him into a hug as one unit, squishing him between them.
“Thank you,” Michael says.
“That was so sweet,” Crystal agrees.
Calum releases them both, beaming at them.
“I meant every word.”
“We know,” Michael says, squeezing his shoulder.
A squeal from the microphone cuts off Calum’s reply, and all three of them wince and turn back to the stage, where Abbey is standing with the microphone held out in front of her and an apologetic look on her face.
“Sorry! Sorry,” she says, gesturing with her glass. Calum isn’t sure what the gesture is supposed to convey. “Am I–Can I speak? Can everyone hear me? I wasn’t going to talk, but then Calum got up here, so I have to, too.”
She shoots him a faux pout. It’s clear that she's had too many drinks to be actually mad, and Crystal giggles next to him.
“This should be good,” she says. Calum has to agree, melting back towards Roy to enjoy it, perfectly happy that his speech won’t be remembered after whatever humor Abbey is about to bring.
Once Abbey finally exits the stage, Luke and Sierra thoroughly upstage them both with a rendition of “Can’t Help Falling in Love.”
“Yeah, I’m glad I’m not singing tonight,” Calum breathes to Roy during it. Roy responds by sliding an arm around his waist and pressing a kiss to his cheek. They spend the rest of the song pressed against each other, leaching warmth in the January night.
Calum doesn’t have too many moments that he wants to live in forever. He knows there’s always another good one on the horizon, mixed within the mediocre ones and the bad ones that help him grow as a person. He doesn’t want to be stuck in one and miss out on all of the others, but this one… this is a moment that Calum would be okay lingering in.
It’s a beautiful song made better by the love between the two people singing it and the love between the two people they’re singing it for. Everyone in the yard listens quietly, soft smiles on their faces as they stand huddled with their loved ones. Calum’s heart swells.
Calum closes his eyes for the last chorus, savoring this feeling.
No one else approaches the stage once Luke and Sierra finish, and eventually someone turns the playlist on again. The caterers subtly clear the food, all of the dirty dishes and leftovers disappearing while Calum is distracted by Roy and Michael and Crystal and all of the other friends filling the back yard with laughter.
Calum doesn’t know how long everyone lingers, time moving syrupy slow without the sun crawling across the sky, but eventually someone approaches Michael and Crystal with well-wishes for a wonderful night and says goodbye. Other guests follow, and one of the bridesmaids takes Abbey home with her to sleep off what is sure to be a fun hangover. Calum helps the event planner coordinate clean up and tear down while the rest of the band and partners distract the couple so neither of them try to help, until he, too, is unceremoniously told to hang out with his friends and let everyone do their jobs instead of getting in the way.
“I think that’s probably our cue,” Luke says, laughing at him. “Michael, Crystal, it’s been a pleasure.”
Luke and Michael shake each other’s hands with rigid seriousness before dissolving into laughter and pulling each other into a hug. Ashton takes his leave shortly after, and soon only Michael, Crystal, Roy, and Calum remain. The stage has been stripped with the efficiency of a practiced road crew, the gorgeous flower arrangements have moved to tasteful positions around the deck and patio, and the long banquet table has disappeared, replaced by Michael and Crystal’s normal outdoor furniture. Moose and Southy lie in the yard exhausted, two bright spots against the dark grass. The only sounds remaining in the yard are the faint rumble of cars from the street and the echoes of voices and laughter from the evening.
“How does it feel, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford?” Roy asks, voice barely lifting over the quiet atmosphere.
Crystal hums and looks at Michael, both of them still attached at the hip. She abandoned her heels when the first guests left, and Michael seems to be making up for the few inches by meeting her halfway, curved down towards her.
“It feels… about the same,” Michael says, smiling at her.
“But better,” Crystal replies.
“Yeah,” Michael agrees. “About the same, but better.”
A breeze passes through the yard, colder now that the heaters have been turned off and put away, but Calum doesn’t shiver. He feels Roy’s pinkie wrap around his as Michael and Crystal huddle closer. For a moment, the four of them stand in the yard, quiet and happy. About the same, but better.
“Ready to head in?” Calum asks, tilting his head towards the house, where someone was kind enough to leave a few lights on for the couple.
“I think so,” Crystal says, surveying the yard one last time. Michael whistles for the dogs, then calls when Southy shoots them a dirty look instead of standing. He doesn’t move until Crystal calls, and Calum cuts off Michael’s disgruntled mumbling with a hug, wrapping him in his arms as tight as he can. Michael rises to the challenge and tries to suffocate him in kind.
“I love you,” Calum says to his shoulder. Michael wheezes a laugh.
“I love you, too. But not when you’re trying to kill me.”
Calum finally releases him, straightening his suit jacket for him as he goes. Michael catches him with a squeeze on his shoulder.
“Seriously, thank you,” he says, sincerity coating his words. “For everything.”
He could be just talking about best man duties, but Calum knows how to hear the words Michael doesn’t say.
For the longest time, it was just the two of them. Then, they added Luke and Ashton. Still, Calum always prided himself on loving Michael, even when he’s being annoying or prickly or getting them in trouble. He holds him up as best he could when he’s down, and Michael brings endless adventure and joy to Calum’s life. Calum does his best to return the favor, even in the past year when they couldn’t see each other much due to COVID, dropping off care packages and sending voice notes on his phone with pictures of Duke when he could.
They’re brothers, and they always will be.
Now, amidst all of the other friends and family they’ve gained along the way, Michael has found a wife and Calum has gained another sister. It isn’t just the two of them anymore, and it never will be again.
It’s strange, realizing that over the past decade he’s had to give his best friend away to be loved by other people. It feels right, too. Michael deserves all of the love in the world.
Calum nods, swallowing around the lump in his throat.
His hug with Crystal is shorter and significantly less aggressive, but she lingers with her arms around his waist as well.
“Congratulations,” he says while she smiles at him.
“Thank you, Calum,” she replies, then kisses him on the cheek.
Nothing more needs to be said. Some things have been spoken so much that they don’t need to be reiterated every time, like a wedding without the vows. Michael and Crystal didn’t make any verbal promises today, just signed the papers, but the wedding doesn’t feel worse without it, just like this conversation doesn’t need paragraphs of explanation.
They’re all on the same page. They’ve given the vows before, on tour buses and backyards and random cafes around the world, using different words and different actions. The meaning is still the same.
“Have a good night,” Calum calls as Michael and Crystal head to the house for their first night as a married couple. He knows that they both hear the I love you contained within.
“Come on,” Roy says, linking their hands together and tilting his head up. They’re too close to the city and it’s too cloudy to see any stars, but Calum knows that they’re up there, unspoken and unseen.
“Let’s go home,” Calum finishes for him. They walk towards the gate perfectly in sync, and Calum makes his own sort of vow silently.
It doesn’t need to be spoken, not right now. They’re all on the same page.

Can I say something that might be a bit controversial? It really doesn’t sit right with me that fans are too passionate about Harry’s love life. They’ll hate with a passion or ship with a passion. Like, they’ve always been SO negative about his relationships and he even talked about how that affects his life and honestly now with Taylor, it’s so nice to see that fans FINALLY like his partner. But still, they’re PASSIONATE about it which I find it a bit…idk… none of his relationships are any of our business. Either we like the person or not, we are strangers in the end of the day. We do not know these people. Every time he was seen with someone before, people were like “I hate her” “She’s not good enough for him” “He doesn’t love her” LIKE, HOW DO YOU KNOW THAT HE DOESN’T LOVE HER?? And this time people are like “They’re definitely getting married, they’re definitely locked in for life” which they might be for all we know, but the thing is EXACTLY that. WE DONT KNOW!. I have to admit that I love him with Taylor and there have been a couple of his exes that I didn’t like but that was all. I know it’s natural to have an opinion on it but HATING on someone or getting him married with someone it’s extreme to me. With Taylor he seems like he found a person like himself and thats a VERY good sign that things can go in the best of ways but STILL, we are not them. We don’t know. If things go south, which I hope they don’t, but you never know what happens, people are gonna be rubbing it in their faces. “Why did they beak up” “They were perfect” will want to know how and why it happened and blah blah. We should be careful with these things. Why do people keep making decisions for his and his partner lives? It’s always been “They’re gonna break up because I hate them together” which was weird and now it’s “They’re gonna get married because I love them together” which is STILL weird. The obsession for his relationships, both good and bad obsession, is WEIRD!!
It's intense, but it's not unique to Harry's fandom. Look at how much some Swifties adore and obsess over Travis Kelce.
I think speculation about marriage and children will only increase the older Harry gets, regardless of who he dates. This kind of photo posted recently by Michael Clifford represents the dream to many Harries.
instagram
#harry styles#harries#michael clifford#thanks to Larries and PRs the chance of Harry posting photos of his children is zero#even in group shots#and if he doesn't the paps will always have to blur their faces#having said that#he is so stalked that fans might get and share pics

i feel emo in this chilis tonight because how the fuck is luke hemmings married. how the fuck is michael clifford about to have a baby. i found them when they were teenagers and i needed them so crucially, and now it's gonna be 10 years - almost half my entire life - a decade of them being with me and though im an entirely different person from the middle schooler i was back then, they are still so immensely important to me and they always always will
#being a diehard fan of an artist for a DECADE - finding comfort and growing up alongside them is an incredible experience#i know it's parasocial to the max but they really are everything to me#clara tais toi
