[ad_1] The pitch in focus. Source (RevSportz) Subhayan Chakraborty in Pune After New Zealand shocked India in Bengaluru to take a 1-0 lead, the hosts are looking to make a comeback in the three-Test series. India haven’t lost a home series since 2012, and to avoid a slip-up, they will have to bounce back in Pune. Against this backdrop, the pitch preparation at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium has caught attention. It’s a black soil pitch, but what makes the build-up interesting is how senior curators Tapas Chatterjee and Ashish Bhowmick have been overseeing the preparation of the match strip. On Tuesday morning, two days before the Pune Test, the pitch was under flax covers — a couple of layers, in fact. As New Zealand trained from 9:30 am onwards, the ground staff slowly removed one layer, keeping a single cover on the pitch. However, as the Indian coaching staff, led by Gautam Gambhir, along with captain Rohit Sharma and veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, inspected the pitch closely, the covers were temporarily removed. The pitch soaked up the intense Pune sun as the mower trimmed the remaining grass. Post-trimming, the groundsmen brought back the covers but only over the good length and slightly short of good length areas in the middle of the pitch, leaving the fuller lengths, where spinners generally pitch the ball, exposed to the heat. This set-up remained for a couple of hours. During another pitch inspection by Rohit and Gambhir, the ground staff selectively watered the uncovered fuller length areas at both ends. The pitch in focus. Source (Revsportz) Meanwhile, four members of the ground staff were seen using a brush to remove dust and scuff up the pitch, clearly indicating that the Test will be dominated by spinners, especially after the Indian trio of Ashwin, Kuldeep Yadav, and Ravindra Jadeja were mostly ineffective in Bengaluru. Interestingly, Washington Sundar has been added to the Indian squad for the remainder of the series, suggesting that the hosts might opt for four spinners if necessary. However, the carefully curated Pune pitch is expected to greatly assist the spinners as the game progresses. This makes winning the toss crucial, as the team batting first will have the best opportunity to score heavily in the first innings. Batting will become progressively tougher from the second innings onwards, and spinners are likely to play a big role. Notably, New Zealand also boast spinners like Ajaz Patel, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Michael Bracewell, and Mitchell Santner, who could pose significant challenges to the Indian batters. #RishabhPant bats and keeps without any visible discomfort while #ShubmanGill had two sessions at the nets. Thanks to Rohit and his boys, we have even more reasons to be happy. The whole country is filled with holiday spirit. It was fun to bring this to you. A big thank you to MS Ramakrishnan, Nikhil Jadhav, Saurabh Shankar, Kumar Abhisekh Das, and Harish for their hard work. Half of the job is completed. You have to remain composed and pay attention to the present. Shami clasped his chance with both hands. He is a quality bowler and carries experience. We were looking at perhaps three hundred plus at one point. Bravo on your bowlers' pulling back. I'm having fun with my batting. We have different personalities, yet we (Gill and I) fit each other nicely. Good, we will win. Not much to say here. For years, Kohli has been doing this. When we lost a few wickets, he and Jadeja dragged us back. Though it wasn't clinical today, fielding is our pride. Among fielders worldwide, Jadeja is among the best. These occurrences occur. We already know that fielding will determine a lot going ahead. We enjoy travelling and playing in many corners of the earth. New Zealand National Cricket Team Vs India National Cricket Team Match Scorecard: Tom Latham on the Game Tom Latham: "We performed nicely but missed opportunities in the last ten overs. To India, credit We failed to produce the double breakthrough. Rachin and Mitchell had a fantastic working relationship that would help us through the last stretch. Our gang is quite good. Daryl with the century and Rachin with the bat performed, admittedly. Before the next game, we get a few days off. We try to do excellent deeds”. New Zealand National Cricket Team Vs India National Cricket Team Match Scorecard: Player of the Match, Mohammed Shami Mohammed Shami: "I felt excellent about myself after getting out on the first ball." It's essential to support your peers. The team must do well. It was important to get those late scores. This makes me happy because it means India is now in first place in the table. What could New Zealand have done better? Their fifth bowling choice doesn't look perfect. They can avoid having spinners like Ravindra and Phillips play crucial overs when the weather is good. But they need a different plan when the conditions are suitable for hitting. Even though Boult and Henry were teasing the edges, they didn't get any early catches. Ferguson took a few wickets, but Rohit and Gill hit softballs. They left a few runs on the table in their turn to bat. Mitchell slowed down for a short time before he hit 100. After his hundred, he couldn't speed up. India's Fielding Woes In what ways could India have done extra? Their defence wasn't excellent. Both the catches and the fielding on the ground were terrible. The centre could have helped this. While India needed five runs, Kohli made a mistake by not taking the single and going out. However, he is given the benefit of the doubt. Since hundreds are more valuable in the World Cup, Indian players have worked harder to get them. Read the full article

T20 World Cup: Williamson To Lead As NZ Name Experienced 15-man Squad
ICC T20 World Cup: Kane Williamson has been named captain as New Zealand announced an experienced 15-man squad for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, starting from June 1 in the USA and the West Indies. This is Williamson’s sixth appearance in a T20 World Cup and his fourth tournament as captain. Tim Southee, currently sits as the leading wicket-taker in the history of T20Is, earned a selection in his seventh T20 World Cup. Moreover, pacer Trent Boult is set for his fifth T20 World Cup. Devon Conway, who is currently recovering from a thumb injury, has also been picked in the squad. Pace bowler Ben Sears will travel and train with the team as injury cover. Bowler Matt Henry and batting all-rounder Rachin Ravindra are the only two members of the 15 without ICC T20 World Cup experience. "Matt has worked exceptionally hard on his skills across the phases of a T20 game to come back into selection consideration. Rachin has made every post a winner in the past 12 months and it was exciting to see him continue that trajectory over the summer in the T20 format against Australia," said coach head Gary Stead. New Zealand will leave for the tournament on May 23. They open their campaign against Afghanistan in Guyana on June 7. New Zealand Squad: Kane Williamson (C), Finn Allen, Trent Boult, Michael Bracewell, Mark Chapman, Devon Conway, Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry, Daryl Mitchell, Jimmy Neesham, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Mitchell Santner, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee. After more than a year since Kane Williamson took part in a 20-over game, he is set to lead New Zealand's T20I squad against Bangladesh in the upcoming series. Williamson played his last T20I match against India in 2022. After making his debut in the 20-over format in 2011, the 33-year-old appeared in 85 T20I innings and scored 2464 runs. On the other hand, Kiwi opener Devon Conway was rested in the upcoming 20-over series against Bangladesh.Michael Bracewell, Lockie Ferguson, Matt Henry and Henry Shipley were not included in the T20I squad due to injury problems. Meanwhile, star pacer Trent Boult made himself unavailable for the selection.Pacer James Neesham who missed New Zealand's previous T20I series against England, made his place in the squad. On the other hand, 25-year-old Ben Sears has also been included."It's great to be able to finish off a busy year that started on the road by having the group together in New Zealand. We've played T20 cricket in a wide variety of conditions this year and it's been great to see a broad range of players making contributions," New Zealand coach Gary Stead said as quoted by ESPNcricinfo."While we're advanced in our planning, as we saw with the one-day World Cup squad this year with the likes of Mark Chapman and Rachin Ravindra - there is certainly still time for players to come into that mix," Stead added. The first T20I match of the T20I series will be played in Napier on December 27. The second 20-over game between New Zealand and Bangladesh will take place in Tauranga on December 29, while the third will be on December 31.New Zealand's T20I squad: Kane Williamson (C), Finn Allen, Mark Chapman, Kyle Jamieson, Adam Milne, Daryl Mitchell, James Neesham, Glenn Phillips, Mitchell Santner, Ben Sears, Tim Seifert, Ish Sodhi, Tim Southee.(This story has not been edited by NDTV staff and is auto-generated from a syndicated feed.)Topics mentioned in this article

Black Caps lose another key figure for Cricket World Cup
reigning Men's ODI Player of the Year Set for Surgery, World Cup Dreams Shattered
Blow to Black Caps as Bracewell Faces Lengthy Rehabilitation Ahead of ICC ODI World Cup
Black Caps coach Gary Stead expressed his disappointment as the reigning Men's ODI Player of the Year, Michael Bracewell, prepares for surgery in the UK this Thursday. Bracewell's unfortunate injury setback will force him to miss the highly anticipated ICC ODI World Cup, scheduled to take place in India this October-November. Bracewell's Absence of a Significant Loss Gary Stead empathized with Bracewell, emphasizing the impact of the injury on the player and the team as a whole. He said, "Firstly, you always feel for the player when injury strikes, especially when it means they will have to miss a world event." Stead acknowledged Bracewell's outstanding contributions to the Black Caps over the past 15 months, recognizing him as a valuable team member. A Multifaceted Player and a Crucial Asset Michael Bracewell's exceptional skills, showcased across all aspects of the game, positioned him as a pivotal player for the Black Caps in the upcoming World Cup. His absence will undoubtedly be felt as the team now faces the challenge of finding a suitable replacement to fill the void left by the injury. Embracing the Challenge of Rehabilitation Although deeply disappointed, Bracewell adopts a pragmatic outlook, acknowledging the inevitable occurrence of injuries in the world of sports. Recognizing the significance of rehabilitation, he has shifted his focus towards recovering from the setback and reclaiming his place on the cricket field. Black Caps Confront Another Setback The absence of Michael Bracewell adds to the series of unfortunate events that have plagued the Black Caps' World Cup campaign. The team suffered a major setback in April when their captain and leading batsman, Kane Williamson, was ruled out of the tournament due to a ruptured ACL. Williamson sustained the injury during an awkward fall while playing in the IPL, requiring surgical intervention. Bracewell's Return Delayed Following his surgery, Bracewell, who has been away since April after being called to the IPL, will face additional waiting time before he can fly back home. The recovery process will necessitate a couple of weeks of post-surgery rehabilitation, further prolonging his absence from the team. As the Black Caps regroup and strategize their campaign for the ICC ODI World Cup, they will undoubtedly miss the valuable contributions of Michael Bracewell. The team now faces the challenge of adjusting their lineup and finding alternative solutions to compensate for the absence of their esteemed player. On the other hand, Bracewell remains determined to recover swiftly and rejoin his teammates on the cricketing stage. source:Biackcaps Read the full article

[ad_1] Virat Kohli for India (PC: X) Subhayan Chakraborty in Bengaluru Virat Kohli will return to the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru as Team India face New Zealand in the first of a three-Test series, starting on Wednesday. With one eye on the upcoming tour of Australia in November, Team India aim to overcome the Black Caps, who are reeling from a disastrous two-Test series against Sri Lanka. However, the spotlight will be on Kohli, whom Bengaluru has embraced as one of its own. Despite not winning an IPL trophy with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, he remains one of the city’s biggest draws. It has been over a year since Kohli last scored a century in Test cricket, his most recent being against West Indies at Port of Spain. In the eight innings since, he managed only one half-century—a gritty 76 against South Africa on a challenging Centurion pitch. Fans at the stadium will hope that Kohli can replicate his debut performance at this venue, where he scored a match-winning 103 and an unbeaten 51 against New Zealand in 2012. However, Kohli’s subsequent appearances here have been less successful, with scores of 12 and 15 against Australia in 2017, and 23 and 13 against Sri Lanka in 2022, each time getting out LBW. On Monday, amid looming clouds, Kohli was at his focussed best during Team India’s practice session. Initially, he spent quality time facing pacers and net bowlers. Later, he shifted to face left-arm spinners and off-spinners, possibly preparing for New Zealand’s tweakers like Ajaz Patel, Rachin Ravindra, Mitchell Santner, and Michael Bracewell. His footwork was particularly noticeable, focusing on gentle strokes rather than forceful hits, with the occasional sweep and cut, but primarily playing in the ‘V’. Post-net session, Kohli moved to another area to face throwdowns from specialists like Abhishek Nayar, Nuwan, Dayanand Garani, and Raghu. He nearly perfected each shot, though occasional errors prompted visible frustration. Ultimately, Kohli’s net session lasted about an hour, as he aimed to return to form on his adopted home turf. Post his nets, Kohli was seen engaging in lengthy chats with local net bowlers and aspiring cricketers, helping them with insights on batting. Other players like Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sarfaraz Khan, Rishabh Pant, Ravindra Jadeja, and Kuldeep Yadav also had substantial practice sessions. Notably, Ashwin had an extended session with bowling coach Morne Morkel, focussing on refining his leg spin, particularly his wrist position and body posture. Rishabh Pant, after his batting practice, engaged in a lengthy wicket-keeping drill with fielding coach T Dilip.
