>>> Cruel Diagonals <<<
Cruel Diagonals is an outlet for destructive sample processing, vocal exploration, and a palette for inter-media contemplations and applications. Influenced by early experimental filmmakers such as Maya Deren and Kenneth Anger, Cruel Diagonals has been described in cinematic terms, evoking moods and montages of an eerie, surrealist timbre. Warped field recordings and layered vocals incite a beckoning to a phantasmagorical, metallic-tinged state of existence. https://crueldiagonals.bandcamp.com/album/disambiguation
~~~ Patrick Shiroishi ~~~
Patrick Shiroishi is a Japanese-American multi-instrumentalist & composer based in Los Angeles.
*** Simon Scott (Slowdive(band)) ***
Simon Scott is a sound ecologist and multi-instrumentalist from Cambridge, England. His work explores the creative process of actively listening, the implications of recording the natural world using technology and the manipulation of natural sounds used for musical composition. He plays the drums in Slowdive and has recently collaborated with artists James Blackshaw, Spire, Taylor Deupree (Between), Isan + many more. https://touch333.bandcamp.com/album/grace
$$$ LEYA (NYC) $$$
LEYA aims to deconstruct the traditional connotations of the harp and violin by luxuriating in the deviant juxtaposition of ugliness vs. beauty. These two stringed instruments are most commonly associated with classical beauty, but by altering their sound through unorthodox tunings, extended techniques, amplification, and effects, Donovan and Markiewicz are able to mine the depths of their darker, more unsettling capacities. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q6zBynPTqxs
+++ White Boy Scream +++
Micaela Tobin is a soprano, sound artist, and teacher based in Los Angeles, CA who specializes in experimental voice and contemporary opera, composing under the moniker "White Boy Scream." Within this project Micaela dissects her operatic and extended vocal techniques through the use of electronics as a means of reclaiming the “diva." She has performed extensively throughout the western United States, most notably as a guest with hip-hop experimentalists clipping. during their 2017 tour in support of The Flaming Lips. Micaela’s most recent full length release, “Remains” (Crystalline Morphologies) was listed as one of the top 10 Noise/Industrial Albums of 2018 by The Wire Magazine. https://wbscream.bandcamp.com/album/remains
Trespassers (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) by Jonathan Snipes
I always try to pick a "hero" or a "theme" sound for my scores that's related conceptually to the narrative of the film. When I first saw Trespassers I knew immediately I wanted the star of this score to be the doorbell. The doorbell is the death knell that heralds the horrific events of the film. I wanted that first press of the doorbell to echo and reverberate throughout the rest of the film, as if the doorbell itself was somehow controlling or forcing the action to occur.
I bought an antique door chime on eBay, took it apart, and made recordings playing those chimes in every conceivable way. Bowed, struck, scraped, activated with dry ice, blown like a pan-flute. It's the spine of pretty much every cue and informed the melodic and harmonic direction of all of this music.
This score also features a superb team of collaborators and musicians. David Rothbaum and I have been working together since 2008. He's an exceptional synthesist, guitar player, and all-around musician. He played all the guitars on this score, as well as co-wrote a handful of cues. Also appearing are percussionist Ted Byrnes, vocalist Micaela Tobin, and Lenka Morokova who plays a custom-built "Bohemian Crystal" instrument, which is in some ways related to the Cristal Baschet, but has it's own unique and haunting tone. I'm grateful to Orson both for making a movie that invited experimentation, and his trust in allowing me to actually make this score, which is full of many of my favorite techniques and ideas.
